This study presents a high-value green recycling strategy for waste polyetheretherketone (PEEK) to fabricate a bioinspired “vine-wrapping” nanocomposite insulating paper from recycled PEEK fibers and self-prepared polyarylate (PAR) nanofibers. The multiscale synergy of the nanocomposite significantly enhances its dielectric performance. Micron-scale PEEK fibers form a three-dimensional scaffold, which provides mechanical support and carrier transport pathways. High-aspect-ratio PAR nanofibers exploit secondary thermoplasticity to infiltrate scaffold voids, refine pore structures, suppress electric field distortion, and inhibit electrical tree initiation. At the molecular level, strong dipole-dipole interactions between PEEK carbonyls and PAR esters, along with π-π stacking of aromatic rings, create a stable, hierarchical noncovalent interface. Consequently, the PEEK/PAR nanocomposite paper achieves a breakdown strength of 89.67 kV/mm, representing a 256.11% improvement over commercial aramid paper. After thermal aging (200 °C, 24 h), UV exposure (365 nm, 24 h), 100 folding cycles, and 20 kneading-folding cycles, the breakdown strengths remain at 34.14, 37.34, 17.51, and 17.06 kV/mm, respectively. These values are 2.3, 1.91, 1.38, and 2.31 times the strength of commercial aramid paper. These results indicate a viable pathway for developing sustainable, high-performance, paper-based insulation.

The development of high-performance polymer composites—combining strength, low friction, and wear resistance—remains an industrial challenge. In the present study, zeolite imidazolate framework ZIF-62 served as a multifunctional filler to fabricate ZIF-62/PEEK composites via fused deposition modeling (FDM). The effects of ZIF-62 on PEEK’s friction and wear were systematically investigated. By modulating the Im/BIm molar ratio in ZIF-62, we controlled the kinetics and composition of interfacial transfer film formation during sliding, thereby enhancing PEEK’s tribological performance. The optimal composition (ZIF-62/PEEK with Zn:Im:BIm = 1:1.5:0.5) reduced PEEK’s wear rate by 90 % to 1.45 × 10 ⁻⁶ mm 3 /Nm under 4 MPa × 0.25 m/s. The mechanisms behind this improvement were discussed based on multiscale characterization and molecular dynamics simulations. It was revealed that Zn species were released through the breakage of Zn–N bonds and reacted with degraded PEEK to form ZnO, while simultaneously inducing tribo-catalyzed graphitization. These products combined with iron oxides from the counterface to form a robust transfer film. This work establishes ligand engineering as a strategy for designing next-generation PEEK tribomaterials.

Synthesis of a A-PAAS sizing agent featuring a “rigid-flexible” synergistic structure. • The flexural strength and ILSS of 0.5-CF/PEEK were largely increased by 59.8% and 35.0%. • The possible interfacial modification and thermal properties is comprehensive analyzed. • The as-prepared A-PAAS sizing agent is environmentally friendly. Polyimide (PI) has attracted increasing attention in recent decades for interfacial optimization of carbon fiber/polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK) composites owing to its outstanding thermal resistance. This study effectively incorporated a novel polyimide sizing agent (A-PAAS) by introducing non-coplanar alicyclic rings, amide functional groups, and ammonium ions into the polymer backbone through molecular design. This structural design effectively reduces the packing density of molecular chains, facilitating easier spreading during the sizing process and thereby enhancing penetration into fiber pores. Furthermore, the prepared A-PAAS exhibited outstanding thermal stability, with a 5% weight-loss temperature (T 5% ) of 435.0 °C, which exceeds the processing temperatures of most commercially available thermoplastic resins. The work shows that the CF/PEEK composite, after sizing, exhibits effectively enhanced mechanical properties; the interlaminar shear strength and flexural strength increased by 35.0% and 59.8%, respectively, compared to the unsized composite. This work introduces non-coplanar aliphatic rings, ether bonds, and amide bonds into the sizing agent, thereby establishing a synergistic reinforcement bridge at the CF-PEEK interface. Improving the surface interfacial adhesion and wettability of CF, whilst establishing a hydrogen-bond cross-linking network within the sizing agent and PEEK, makes a key contribution to enhancing the composite's macroscopic mechanical properties. In brief, this efficient and environmentally friendly A-PAAS sizing agent provides an innovative strategy for the interfacial modification of CF/PEEK composites. Polytetrafluoroethylene/Polyetheretherketone (PTFE/PEEK) corrosion-resistant coatings were prepared on the surface of 7075 aluminum alloy by the electrostatic powder spraying technique (EPST). To achieve a denser microstructure and improved hydrophobic properties, we introduced nano-CeO2to fill the coatings and analyzed the mechanism of its effect on the different coating structures. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was evaluated using NaCl immersion. The results indicate that nano-CeO2enhances the coatings by filling local defects and forming a denser microstructural barrier, thereby improving the hydrophobicity and corrosion resistance of the composite coatings. Additionally, the addition of nano-CeO2to the 20 µm PTFE/PEEK composite coating increases structural heterogeneity and pore defects, reduces coating densification, and facilitates the penetration of corrosive media, thereby weakening the barrier capability of the coating. However, in the 50 µm PTFE/PEEK/CeO2composite coating, nano-CeO2particles fill part of the pre-existing defects and improve coating densification, thereby increasing the resistance to the penetration of corrosive media through the coating. This enhanced barrier effect delays the contact of corrosive media with the substrate and improves the corrosion resistance of the coating. In this study, the 50 μm PTFE/PEEK/CeO2composite coating with a nano-CeO2content of 0.5 wt.% exhibited the best corrosion resistance, with a corrosion current density of 8.02 × 10−4μA·cm−2, while |Z|0.01Hzremained above 106Ω·cm2after 720 h of immersion in NaCl solution.

The increasing demand for carbon fiber/polyether-ether-ketone (CF/PEEK) composites in marine and aerospace engineering is driven by their potential for weight reduction and enhanced structural flexibility. However, the inherent weak interface poses a challenge, leading to stress concentration and structural failures. Herein, aqueous PEKC-COOH sizing agent on CF as a soft unit (SCF) and hydroxyapatite (HA) nanomaterial as a rigid unit establish a regulable active interface structure, synergistically enhancing the interface adhesion through mechanical interlocking and chemical bonding of the CF/PEEK composites. Under external loading, the PEKC-COOH sizing agent allows for uncurling of molecular chains at the interface, promoting slip of HA nanomaterials and dissipating a significant amount of energy during fracture progression. The SCF-HA/PEEK composites exhibited significant enhancements in interlaminar shear strength and flexural strength, with an increase of 65.1% and 49.8%, respectively, compared with the pristine composites. Meanwhile, the salt-spray resistance of the composites has been significantly improved. Following a 72-h salt spray test, the ILSS retention ratios of modified SCF-GB/PEEK composites were determined to be 91.7%. Remarkably, the use of cationic, non-ionic, and zwitterionic surfactants reduced the growth time of HA on the fiber surface in simulated body fluids to 15 min compared to several days using conventional methods. This study not only improves production efficiency and reduces manufacturing costs but also provides a research foundation for industrial manufacturing. Furthermore, the novel interface structure design broadens the applicability of CF/PEEK composites in hygrothermal and salt-spray environments. Highlights Regulable interface was formed by in situ growth of HA on fiber sizing agent. HA nanomaterial growth time in SBF was reduced from several days to 15 min. Modified composites increase ILSS by 65.1% and flexural strength by 49.8%. Modified composites maintain 91.7% ILSS after a 72-h salt-spray resistance test.

The insufficient bond strength at the fiber/metal interface of fiber metal laminates (FMLs) is a primary obstacle to their widespread application. To address this issue, a strategy is proposed to introduce graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) to enhance the bond strength at the carbon fiber/polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK)-titanium interface. This approach comprises two main components. First, GNPs were deposited onto the surface of the titanium layer to form a micro-nanolayer using electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The effects of varying voltages, deposition times, and GNPs concentrations on the EPD results were investigated. Second, the PEEK matrix was modified with GNPs to further enhance the interfacial bond strength of CF/PEEK-titanium. The results indicated that optimal EPD parameters-30 V, 90 s, and a GNP concentration of 0.75 mg/mL-yielded the best outcomes. Under these conditions, the flexural strength, interfacial shear strength, and shear adhesion strength of FMLs improved by 201.9 %, 133.9 %, and 91.4 %, respectively, compared to unmodified FMLs. When combining GNPs-modified PEEK with EPD, these properties increased further, with flexural strength, interfacial shear strength, and shear adhesion strength enhanced by 281.7 %, 238.7 %, and 112.4 %, respectively, compared to unmodified FMLs. Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to further investigate the role and mechanism of GNPs in the GNPs/PEEK/titanium ternary system. The simulations revealed that combining a GNPs-modified matrix with EPD significantly enhances the system's interfacial energy. Moreover, GNPs substantially influence the torsional behaviour of the PEEK main chain. These combined experimental and simulation results offer new insights into applying GNPs in composite materials.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is regarded as one of the most potential candidates of biomaterials in spinal implant applications. However, as a bioinert material, PEEK plays a limited role in osteoconduction and osseointegration. In this study, recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) was immobilized onto the surface of collagen-coated PEEK in order to prepare a multi-functional material. After adsorbed onto the PEEK surface by hydrophobic interaction, collagen was cross-linked with N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N′-ethyl carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS). EDC/NHS system also contributed to the immobilization of rhBMP-2. Water contact angle tests, XPS and SEM clearly demonstrated the surface changes. ELISA tests quantified the amount of rhBMP-2 immobilized and the release over a period of 30 d. In vitro evaluation proved that the osteogenesis differentiation rate was higher when cells were cultured on modified PEEK discs than on regular ones. In vivo tests were conducted and positive changes of major parameters were presented. This report demonstrates that the rhBMP-2 immobilized method for PEEK modification increase bioactivity in vitro and in vivo , suggesting its practicability in orthopedic and spinal clinical applications.

Aiming to improve safety and stability in manufacturing poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) prepreg by powder impregnation, the aqueous system combined with surfactant and thickener was proposed in this paper. Based on surface tension method, the effects of surfactants and concentration on dispersion efficiency of PEEK powders were studied, and concentration of surfactants was determined. The effect of thickener concentration on suspension stability was analyzed, and ingredients of aqueous system were optimized by mechanical tests. The results show that, dispersion efficiency would reach maximum when surfactant concentration at critical micelle concentration, but not affected by the type of surfactant. Network association mechanism of thickener could improve stability of suspension, which holding time was increased from 40 min to 4 h. The good dispersion effect and long times stable system improved the coefficient variation of resin mass fraction, which was reduced from 7% to 4%. Compared with circulating system, the mechanical test results showed that the tensile strength kept unchanged, but interlayer properties were associated with carbon residue mass, the lower the residue carbon mass, the higher the interlayer strength retention rate, the optimized ingredient was Aerosol OT 75%E solution. Aqueous system has characteristics of safety, green, and low cost, which fits the demands of industrial production of prepreg.

The tribological performance of hip joint materials in the synovial fluid is substantially influenced by environmental factors. In this study, the tribological properties of polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK)-highly crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) hip joint materials were investigated in composite synovial fluids with varying pH conditions, revealing the coupling mechanism between pH and composite synovial fluid components. The lubrication efficacy of the composite synovial fluid under physiological conditions was validated through a 2 million-cycle hip joint simulation test. Results indicated that the coefficient of friction (COF) decreased with the increasing pH, while the wear factor remained stable at pH = 7.5 and pH = 8.0 but decreased progressively at pH = 8.5. Notably, the Fluid C demonstrated significant pH sensitivity, reducing the wear factor by 89.12 % when pH increased from 8.0 to 8.5. Moreover, the results of the hip joint simulation tests were consistent with the sliding tribology tests. The component concentration regulated the lubrication efficiency, with amplified effects during long-term service. Hence, this study elucidated wear mechanisms in “soft-soft” hip joint materials under simulated physiological conditions and provided critical insights for predicting the lifespan of polymer-based artificial joints.

Epoxy resin is confronted with the trade-off among high
heat resistance,
high modulus, and good toughness. In order to address the challenge,
a series of poly(ether sulfone)-polyetheretherketone multi-block copolymers
(PE b PK) are synthesized with hydroxyl-terminated
poly(ether sulfone) and fluorine-terminated polyetheretherketone oligomers
with different molecular weights as build-blocks. As a proof-of-concept,
the PE b PKs are applied as modifiers to toughen bisphenol
A epoxy (E51) with 4,4 ′ -diaminodiphenyl sulfones as a hardener.
Introducing rigid PEEK segments into flexible PES improves the thermal
resistance and modulus of the epoxy composites and without at expanse
of toughness. It is due to the inherent rigidity of the PEEK segments
and the molecular-level microphase separation of the composites. Apart
from PE b PK-5 k /10k (PE b PK-xk/yk indicates that in a multiblock copolymer, the M n of PES is x and the M n of
PEEK is y, with units in thousand Daltons), other variants gain prominently
enhanced modulus and toughness. This PE b PK modification
offers a strategy for developing high-performance epoxy composites.

Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) has regular and rigid molecular chain and is insoluble in most organic solvents. Therefore, it is challenging to use PEEK matrix composites for thermal conductivity (TC) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding applications. Herein, PEEK composites with hybrid fillers were fabricated by solution blending and non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) methods based on a chemical conversion reaction between soluble precursor PEEK-dithiolane and PEEK. Synergistic interaction between hybrid fillers (graphene nanosheets and multiwalled carbon nanotubes) improves the thermal and electrical conductivity of the composites. The effect of the hot-pressing pressure on the conductive/thermal network densification was investigated. The composites performed optimally at a hot pressure of 200 MPa and a filler content of 20.08 vol%. The maximum in-plane and out-of-plane TC reached 10.46 W·m –1 ·K –1 and 4.8 W·m –1 ·K –1 , respectively, which were 4619% and 2414% higher than the corresponding TC of PEEK. Simultaneously, the optimised composite demonstrated significantly improved electrical conductivity (3517 S/m) and EMI shielding effectiveness (66.1 dB). These excellent characteristics are attributed to the solution blending–NIPS method, which improves the dispersion of hybrid fillers in the matrix and forms an internal and external dual-continuous thermal conductive network. The dual-continuous network creates effective channels for phonon and electron transport and enhances EM wave loss. This work provides inspiration for the preparation of PEEK composites as advanced EMI protection and thermal management materials.

In this study, anionic/nonionic (sodium dodecyl sulfonate/polysorbate-80), cationic/nonionic (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide/polysorbate-80), and purely nonionic (Triton X-100) were employed as emulsifier systems, with contents of 10% to 30% to prepare a series of polyetherimide-based emulsion sizing agents. A solution-type sizing agent (S-PEI) was also introduced as an ideal benchmark. The sizing agents were subsequently applied to carbon fibers. The effects of emulsifier type and content on the thermal stability of the sizing agents and the interfacial properties of carbon fiber reinforced poly(ether ether ketone) composites were systematically investigated. The results indicate that emulsifiers reduced the thermal stability of the sizing agents, with the anionic/nonionic system showing the best performance. Increasing emulsifier content progressively decreased thermal stability; above 25%, decomposition temperature fell below the composite processing temperature. Composites with the anionic/nonionic system showed the highest interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and matrix-dominated failure, while others mainly exhibited interfacial failure with much lower ILSS. ILSS first increased then decreased with emulsifier content, peaking at 49.1 MPa at 20%, which is 58%~60% higher than untreated and desized fibers, and is comparable to that of the S-PEI. Failure mode evolved from interfacial to matrix failure, then reverted to interfacial failure. Highlights Ionic emulsifiers cut emulsion size and boost stability. Emulsifiers lower thermal stability; the anionic/nonionic system is optimal. 20% emulsifier yields 49.1 MPa interlaminar shear strength, a 60% increase. Above 25% emulsifier, decomposition is below processing temperature. Optimal emulsifier shifts failure from interfacial to matrix.
