Advanced LiTi2(PO4)3/C anode by incorporation of carbon nanotubes for aqueous lithium-ion batteries

He Zhangxing,Jiang Yifan,Sun Dan,Dai Lei,Wang Haiyan

Inferior rate capability is a big challenge for LiTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 anode for aqueous lithium-ion batteries. Herein, to address such issue, we synthesized a high-performance LiTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /carbon/carbon nanotube (LTP/C/CNT) composite by virtue of high-quality carbon coating and incorporation of good conductive network. The as-prepared LTP/C/CNT composite exhibits excellent rate performance with discharge capacity of 80.1 and 59.1 mAh g −1 at 10 C and 20 C (based on the mass of anode, 1 C = 150 mA g −1 ), much larger than that of the LTP/C composite (53.4 mAh g −1 at 10 C, and 31.7 mAh g −1 at 20 C). LTP/C/CNT also demonstrates outstanding cycling stability with capacity retention of 83.3 % after 1000 cycles at 5 C, superior to LTP/C without incorporation of CNTs (60.1 %). As verified, the excellent electrochemical performance of the LTP/C/CNT composite is attributed to the enhanced electrical conductivity, rapid charge transfer, and Li-ion diffusion because of the incorporation of CNTs.

Ultrahigh electrochemical properties of Na3V2(PO4)3 under synergistic effects of Er3+ substitution and CNTs coating

Rui Du,Chenghao Qian,Changcheng Liu,Que Huang,Yanjun Chen

Currently, the low ionic and electronic conductivities of Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (NVP) have been hindered its further application. In this paper, a simultaneous optimized method of Er 3+ substitution and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) enwrapping is proposed for the first time. Due to the large ionic radius of Er 3+ (89 pm vs 64 pm of V 3+ ), Er 3+ occupying the position of V 3+ makes the crystal structure more stable and alleviates the deformation of the crystal cell. Meanwhile, the interplanar spacing of NVP is broadened after introducing Er 3+ , so the de-intercalation rate of Na + can be accelerated and the kinetic properties are improved. In addition, the enwrapped CNTs connecting with amorphous carbon layers construct a conductive substrate for the fast electronic transportation, which significantly modifies the electronic conductivity. Moreover, the CNTs benefits to inhibit the agglomeration of NVP active materials and make the distribution more uniform and grain size more smaller. The decreasing size indicates a shorter pathway for Na + migration, which improves its apparent ionic diffusivity . Through the above analysis, the dual modification strategy can efficiently improve the kinetic properties of NVP system. Notably, Na 3 V 1.93 Er 0.07 (PO 4 ) 3 / C@CNTs (NVEP-0.07) submits a high capacity of 84.2 mAh g −1 at 50 C and maintains 70.6 mAh g −1 after 8000 cycles, corresponding to a high retention ratio of 83.9 %. The assembled NVEP-0.07 // CHC full cell reveals 146.2 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C, which successfully lightens the LED bulbs, indicating the excellent application potential of NVEP-0.07. Impressively, the recycled XRD/SEM/XPS results demonstrate the significantly improved crystal stability and chemical state of NVEP-0.07.

Fast Potassium Storage in Hierarchical Ca0.5Ti2(PO4)3@C Microspheres Enabling High-Performance Potassium-Ion Capacitors

Zhongyu Zhang,Malin Li,Yu Gao,Zhixuan Wei,Meina Zhang,Chunzhong Wang,Yi Zeng,Bo Zou,Gang Chen,Fei Du

Hybrid potassium-ion capacitors (KICs) show great promise for large-scale storage on the power grid because of cost advantages, the weaker Lewis acidity of K + and low redox potential of K + /K. However, a huge challenge remains for designing high-performance K + storage materials since K + ions are heavier and larger than Li + and Na + . Herein, the synthesis of hierarchical Ca 0.5 Ti 2 (PO 4 ) 3 @C microspheres by use of the electrospraying method is reported. Benefiting from the rich vacancies in the crystal structure and rational nanostructural design, the hybrid Ca 0.5 Ti 2 (PO 4 ) 3 @C electrode delivers a high reversible capacity (239 mA h g −1 ) and superior rate performance (63 mA h g −1 at 5 A g −1 ). Moreover, the KIC employing a Ca 0.5 Ti 2 (PO 4 ) 3 @C anode and activated carbon cathode, affords a high energy/power density (80 W h kg −1 and 5144 W kg −1 ) in a potential window of 1.0–4.0 V, as well as a long lifespan of over 4000 cycles. In addition, in situ X-ray diffraction is used to unravel the structural transition in Ca 0.5 Ti 2 (PO 4 ) 3 , suggesting a two-phase transition above 0.5 V during the initial discharge and solid solution processes during the subsequent K + insertion/extraction. The present study demonstrates a low-cost potassium-based energy storage device with high energy/power densities and a long lifespan.

Li1.4Al0.4Ti1.6(PO4)3-Modified Li4Ti5O12 Anode for Lithium-Ion Storage with Enhanced Rate and Cycling Performance

Tianyu Zhu,Cuiping Yu,Yucheng Wu,Yan Wang

The capacity of Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) at high rates is limited due to the polarization caused by its modest Li-ion (Li+) diffusion coefficient and low electrical conductivity. Coating with ionic conductors is an available method to ameliorate charge transport. Li1+xAlxTi2–x(PO4)3 ion conductors with thermal, chemical, and electrochemical stabilities have been proven to be modification materials for electrodes. Herein, the Li1.4Al0.4Ti1.6(PO4)3 (LATP) precursor dispersion with optimized preparation is applied to the surface modification of LTO by a dynamic mix-drying method. A proper amount of LATP ultrafine particle coating could develop the ion transport rate in the electrode and restrain side reactions. The 2 wt % LATP–LTO anode exhibits an optimized capacity of 168.2 mA h g–1 at 0.1 A g–1 and retains 96.7% of its capacity after 5000 cycles at 5.0 A g–1, while the P-LTO anode retains 86.3% of the capacity. Improved Li+ transport and interface stability in the electrodes lead to the boosted rate and cycling stability. The LATP-modified LTO composites provide a possibility for the further application of related materials in the energy storage field.

Effect of boron-based glass additives on the ionic conductivity of Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 solid electrolyte

Jingrui Kang,Xu Guo,Rui Gu,Yi Tang,Honglei Hao,Yu Lan,Li Jin,Xiaoyong Wei

Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) is a promising candidate as the solid electrolyte in energy storage devices. For practical considerations, the most common ways to ameliorate the low density and high ionic resistance of LATP are usually to use glass additives. In this work, the boron-based (B 2 O 3 , B 2 O 3 -SiO 2 -PbO (BSP), and B 2 O 3 -SiO 2 -K 2 O-Al 2 O 3 (BSKA)) glass are added into LATP by solid method. As the results, the main diffraction peaks of all prepared samples maintain the NASICON-type with the R-3c space group. Meanwhile, the symmetric stretching vibrations of O-P-O bands is redshifted with the addition of boron-based glass, which plays a positive role in bulk conductivity. Additionally, the introduction of boron-based glass additives is effective to increase the grain sizes of the LATP samples. The relative density of the sample is obtained from 93.37% to 95.42%. Furthermore, the total conductivities of 1.33 × 10 −4 , 1.37 × 10 −4 , 1.97 × 10 −4 S cm −1 are obtained in ceramic samples after B 2 O 3 , BSP and BSKA glass additives adding, respectively. The activation energy shows a reduction of 5.26% to 0.36 eV after BSP and BSKA glass adding. Satisfactorily, B 2 O 3 , BSP and BSKA glass have a certain influence on the conductivity, and bear a more favorable argument for the regulation of the morphology and density in the future.

Yeast Template-Derived Multielectron Reaction NASICON Structure Na3MnTi(PO4)3 for High-Performance Sodium-Ion Batteries

Jiapin Liu,Yun Huang,Zhixing Zhao,Wenhao Ren,Zhuangzhi Li,Chao Zou,Ling Zhao,Zhaomin Tang,Xing Li,Mingshan Wang,Yuanhua Lin,Haijun Cao

The sodium super ion conductor (NASICON) structure materials are essential for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their robust crystal structure, excellent ionic conductivity, and flexibility to regulate element and valence. However, the poor electronic conductivity and inferior energy density caused by the nature of these materials have always been obstacles to commercialization. Herein, using yeast as a template to derive NASICON structure Na3MnTi(PO4)3 (NMTP) materials (noted as Yeast@NMTP/C) is presented. The Yeast@NMTP/C material retains the microsphere morphology of the yeast template and not only controls the particle size (around 2 μm) to shorten the Na+ diffusion pathways but also improves the electronic conductivity to optimize the electrochemical kinetics. The Yeast@NMTP/C cathode delivers reversible multielectron redox reactions including Ti4+/3+, Mn3+/2+, and Mn4+/3+ and exhibits a high capacity of 108.5 mAh g–1 with a 79.2% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at a 2C rate. The sodium storage mechanism of Yeast@NMTP/C reveals that the addition of Ti4+/3+ redox plays a key role in improving the Na+ diffusion kinetics, and both solid-solution and two-phase reactions take place during the desodiation and sodiation process. Additionally, the high-rate and long-span cycle performance of Yeast@NMTP/C at 10C is ascribed to contribute to pseudocapacitance.

NASICON-type Ta5+ substituted LiZr2(PO4)3 with improved ionic conductivity as a prospective solid electrolyte

Xingrui Pu,Xing Cheng,Qiaohong Yan,Yueming Lin,Rentai Yan,Ruize Yang,Xiaohong Zhu

The need to develop safe solid-state lithium batteries has stimulated intense research efforts for Li + solid electrolytes. However, the low conductivity limits the development of NASICON LiZr 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (LZP) electrolyte. Here, the doping effects of Ta on the structure, surface morphologies and electrochemical properties of Li 1- x Zr 2- x Ta x (PO 4 ) 3 (LZTP, x  = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06 and 0.08) solid electrolyte were analyzed. LZTP was prepared using a simple solid-state reaction route, followed by sintering at 1200 °C for 12 h. A proper content of Ta 5+ substitution for Zr 4+ is beneficial to stabilize the high conductive rhombohedral (α) phase of LZP at room temperature. Doping Ta 5+ is conducive to unblocking of Li + at the M1 site and facilitates the occupation of Li + at the M2 site, thereby expanding the pathway for Li + conduction. Rietveld refinement data demonstrated that the Zr–O and P–O bond lengths ( d Zr-O and d P-O ) increased with a decrease in Zr–O–P bond angles ( θ Zr-O-P ) as x rose. The distortions in the ZrO 6 octahedron may weaken the coulomb attraction in Li + -O 2- , resulting in a lower activation energy ( E a ) and a higher Li + conductivity. The highest room-temperature conductivity (6.06 × 10 −5  S cm −1 ) was obtained at x  = 0.06, which reached 1.5 × 10 −4  S cm −1 at 50 °C. The E a was found to decrease from 0.388 eV ( x  = 0) to 0.306 eV ( x  = 0.06). In addition, Ta doping resulted in improved connectivity and reduced pore formation, which also contributed to the decrease in resistance. The Raman spectrum demonstrated that some phonon modes of bending vibration in PO 4 were degenerate and external modes became too weak to be observed or even disappeared as Ta content increased. This change in the modes also had an impact on the Li + conductivity. Overall, the LZTP-0.06 appears to be a promising candidate for the solid electrolyte.

Minhui Zheng,Zhoulu Wang,Qiang Ru,Haikuo Fu,Jun Zhang,Zikang Pan,Jiaqi Wang,Qizhen Xie,Xing Zhao

NASICON type KTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 decorated by NTCDA-derived carbon layer (KTP/NC) was prepared as anode material to obtain sustainable lithium/sodium ion storage (LIBs/SIBs). Due to its prominent capacitance, good electronic conductivity and ability to constrain volume, the KTP/NC composite realizes highly electrochemical kinetics both in LIBs and SIBs . For LIBs, the KTP/NC composite delivers a superior reversible capacity of 598.1 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles at 0.5C, impressive cyclability with 225.5 mAh g −1 after 3000 cycles at an ultrahigh current density of 26.1 C and conspicuous rate performance of 160.6 mAh g −1 even at 52.2 C. In addition, the composite has a wide operation-temperature window with favorable capacities of 147.1–372.9 mAh g −1 from −10 °C to 50 °C. As for SIBs, the KTP/NC composite maintains a stable discharge capacity of 112.5 mAh g −1 after 700 cycles at a current density of 2.6 C and conspicuous rate performance of 86.7 mAh g −1 at 5.2 C. The KTP/NC anode exhibits discharge capacities of 29.9–112.6 mAh g −1 from −10 °C to 40 °C. The results demonstrate that the KTP/NC composite would be a promising electrode material for LIBs and SIBs.

Hard Carbon Wrapped Na3V2(PO4)3@C Porous Composite Extending Cycling Lifespan for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Lei Chen,Yanming Zhao,Shenghong Liu,Long Zhao

Although the NASICON-type of Na3V2(PO4)3 is regarded as a potential cathode candidate for advanced sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), it has an undesirable rate performance and low cyclability, which are a result of its poor electronic conductivity. Here, we utilized conductive polyaniline (PANI) grown in situ to obtain the hard carbon-coated porous Na3V2(PO4)3@C composite (NVP@C@HC) with a typically simple and effective sol–gel process. Based on the restriction of double carbon layers, the NVP size decreases distinctly, which can curtail the sodium-ion diffusion distance and enhance the electronic conductivity. As expected, the product displays good discharge capacity (111.6 mA h g–1 at 1 C), outstanding rate capacity (60.4 mA h g–1 at 50 C), and remarkable cycling stability (63.3 mA h g–1 with a retention of 83.3% at 40 C over 3000 cycles). Also, it performs a long-term cycling capacity of 58.5 mA h g–1 exceeding 15 000 cycles at 20 C (with a capacity loss of 0.24% per cycle).

Electrospun Li3V2(PO4)3 nanocubes/carbon nanofibers as free-standing cathodes for high-performance lithium-ion batteries

Yi Peng,Rou Tan,Jianmin Ma,Qiuhong Li,Taihong Wang,Xiaochuan Duan

Lithium vanadium phosphate Li3V2(PO4)3 (LVP)-based cathodes have attracted much attention in pursuit of high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this study, an ionic liquid (IL) has been introduced into the electrospinning process for the first time, successfully leading to the formation of free-standing cathodes built up of LVP nanocubes embedded in N-doped carbon nanofibers (LVP-NC/NCNF). In particular, the IL plays multiple roles in the resulting free-standing cathodes: (i) the IL improves the feasibility of the PAN-based electrospinning system for preparing electrode materials due to its good solubility, resulting in a self-supporting substrate conductive network with good mechanical properties and electrical conductivity; (ii) the IL can act as a structure-directing agent to induce the formation of (100) facet-oriented LVP nanocubes, giving rise to a convenient lithium-ion transport path; and (iii) the IL adsorbed on the surface of LVP nanocubes can form a N-doped dual-phase carbon coating layer during the heat-treatment process, further enhancing the electronic conductivity of the entire electrode. As a result, LVP-NC/NCNF free-standing electrodes exhibit an outstanding electrochemical performance including a high specific capacity, stable cycling performance and superior rate capability. Specially, the LVP-NC/NCNF free-standing cathodes deliver a high discharge capacity of 143.6 mA h g−1 at 5C for a prolonged cycling life of over 1000 cycles. It is highly expected that this facile IL-assisted electrospinning method can be expanded to other polyanion-based cathodes, thus presenting new opportunities for the design and fabrication of high-performance free-standing electrodes for LIBs.

Alleviating the Potential Hysteresis of Na3.5MnCr0.5Ti0.5(PO4)3 Through Mo-Doping for High-Rate Sodium-Ion Batteries

Hongwei Zhang,Shan Wang,Ziqi Wen,Jingping Wang,Youlong Xu

Na 3.5 MnCr 0.5 Ti 0.5 (PO 4 ) 3 (NMCrTP) demonstrates significant development potential as a cathode material for sodium-ion batteries owing to its low cost and high discharge plateau. However, the severe potential hysteresis phenomenon caused by Mn·Na anti-site defects (Mn·Na-ASD) of Mn 2+ residing in Na vacancies is hindering its performance release. Here, a strategy is proposed to alleviate the anti-site defects in NMCrTP through doping Mo at the Ti sites using the sol–gel method. Rietveld refinement results confirm that the content of Mn·Na-ASD decreases from 6.30% in NMCrTP/C to 0.98% in NMCrTP/C-0.05Mo. Meanwhile, Hall effect measurements verify that the Mo donor induces the carrier-type transformation from p-type to n-type, enhancing electronic conductivity from 3.07 × 10 −3 to 3.61 × 10 −3 S cm −1 . Moreover, the ion diffusion coefficient measured by GITT increases from 3.96 × 10 −12 to 1.34 × 10 −11 cm 2 /s. In result, the mean discharge potential of the NMCrTP/C-0.05Mo cathode increases from 2.62 V (vs. Na + /Na) to 3.47 V, and the electrochemical polarization decreases from ΔV = 0.20 to 0.09 V. As expected, the NMCrTP/C-0.05Mo cathode delivers an excellent rate performance of 88.4 mAh g −1 at a high rate of 10 C. This work presents an effective strategy to alleviate the potential hysteresis of the NMCrTP cathode for high-rate SIBs.
