Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and bisphenols (BPs), have been raising global concerns due to their toxic effects on environment and human health. The monitoring of residues of POPs in seafood is crucial for assessing the accumulation of these contaminants in the study area and mitigating potential risks to human health. However, the diversity and complexity of POPs in seafood present significant challenges for their simultaneous detection. Here, a novel multi-component fluoro-functionalized covalent organic framework (OH-F-COF) was designed as SPE adsorbent for simultaneous extraction POPs. On this basis, the recognition and adsorption mechanisms were investigated by molecular simulation. Due to multiple interactions and large specific surface area , OH-F-COF displayed satisfactory coextraction performance for PFASs, PCBs, and BPs. Under optimized conditions, the OH-F-COF sorbent was employed in a strategy of simultaneous extraction and stepwise elution (SESE), in combination with HPLC−MS/MS and GC−MS method, to effectively determined POPs in seafood collected from coastal areas of China. The method obtained low detection limits for BPs (0.0037 −0.0089 ng/g), PFASs (0.0038 −0.0207 ng/g), and PCBs (0.2308 −0.2499 ng/g), respectively. This approach provided new research ideas for analyzing and controlling multitarget POPs in seafood. Environmental implications Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and bisphenols (BPs), have caused serious hazards to human health and ecosystems. Hence, there is a need to develop a quantitative method that can rapidly detect POPs in environmental and food samples. Herein, a novel multi-component fluorine-functionalized covalent organic skeletons (OH-F-COF) were prepared at room temperature , and served as adsorbent for POPs. The SESE-SPE strategy combined with chromatographic techniques was used to achieve a rapid detection of POPs in sea foods from the coastal provinces of China. This method provides a valuable tool for analyzing POPs in environmental and food samples.

Sea cucumber aquaculture tailwater(SCAT) contains pollutants such as antibiotics, humic acids, and amino acids. Direct discharge can deteriorate water quality and have toxic effects on aquatic organisms. In the present study, a two-stage granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption approach was adopted to treat SCAT to eliminate pollutants. The reduction values for florfenicol and neomycin sulfate from the tailwater were 82.38% and 86.51%, respectively, whereas those for chemical oxygen demand (COD Mn ) and total nitrogen (TN) were 64.80% and 88.43%, respectively. The COD Mn and TN concentrations after the adsorption met the “Discharge standard of tailwater for mariculture” requirements (COD Mn ≤ 20 mg/L, TN ≤ 8 mg/L) in China. The adsorption mechanisms mainly involved hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interaction, and π-π conjugation between surface functional groups on the GAC and the florfenicol and neomycin sulfate molecules, the large specific surface area and abundant microporous and mesoporous structures of GAC provided a substantial number of adsorption sites, environmental conditions such as temperature and pH were also critical factors. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics followed the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models, respectively, indicating that the adsorption process was monolayer and chemical adsorption. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption of antibiotics onto GAC was a non-spontaneous, exothermic, and entropy-reducing process. The adsorption rates of FF and Neo were controlled by both of film diffusion and particle diffusion. The findings of the present study confirm the effectiveness and applicability of the two-stage GAC adsorption process for treating tailwater, which is a feasible technical approach for implementation.

Deep-sea lighting provides the essential illumination required for scientific investigation, resource development, and underwater engineering. However, advanced lighting technologies that can withstand extreme hydrostatic pressure remain crucial challenges. In this study, one Cr 2 O 3 -doped high-alumina glass-ceramics that exhibits both high luminescent efficiency and superior hardness was developed and integrated with UV chips for deep-sea LED lighting. The melt quenching method was employed to incorporate different concentrations of Cr 2 O 3 into the high-alumina glass system. Besides, the effects of Cr 2 O 3 on the crystallization process and microcrystalline morphology of glasses were explored by using a variety of analytical techniques. Furthermore, spectroscopic analyses and molecular dynamics simulations elucidated the existence forms of each element in the glass system and verified the dual modification role of Cr 2 O 3 in restructuring the networks of high-alumina glass-ceramics. The transmittance spectra of parent glasses and glass-ceramics and the hardness of the glass-ceramic were evaluated by UV-vis-NIR spectrophotometer and microhardness Vickers tester, respectively. The high luminescent efficiency (Photoluminescence Quantum Yield =38.1%) and exceptionally superior Vickers hardness (9.04 GPa) of the glass-ceramics demonstrate their potential for use in deep-sea LED lighting systems. Finally, a deep-sea LED lighting device was successfully fabricated and tested using the synthesized glass-ceramics. Overall, this study provides a new lighting strategy for deep-sea scientific research, resource development and underwater engineering development.

A stable, phytochemical-loaded nano-emulsion (SBO-NE) was engineered for topical ocular multi-target therapy. • Anti-inflammatory effects exceed Soothe® XP in dry eye model. • Superior retinal protection vs. oral lutein against blue light damage.Moderate myopia control with better ocular safety than atropine. • Rational formulation design harnesses natural product synergy for complex disease management The widespread usage of digital devices has been associated with a significant increase in the incidence of various screen-related ocular diseases, particularly dry eye disease (DED), blue light (BL)-induced retinal damage, and myopia progression. These conditions not only severely compromise visual function and quality of life but also pose a growing challenge to global public health systems. To move beyond the conventional approach of treating each disease separately, this work investigates a consolidated solution that leverages the multi-target properties of sea buckthorn seed oil (SBO) for synergistic treatment of multiple ocular conditions. A nano-lipid eye drop formulation loaded with sea buckthorn seed oil (SBO-NE) was developed to achieve synergistic therapeutic effects. The SBO-NE formulation exhibited excellent stability and ocular tolerability in rabbits. In vivo, SBO-NE exhibited multifaceted therapeutic potential in a DED model, including significant promotion of tear secretion, acceleration of corneal repair, and anti-inflammatory efficacy that exceeded that of Soothe® XP. Furthermore, superior protection against BL-induced retinal damage was demonstrated compared with oral lutein supplementation. In addition, SBO-NE treatment delayed myopia progression. Although less effective than atropine sulfate eye drops, SBO-NE elicited a significant delay without inducing the dry eye typically associated with atropine. In summary, these findings suggest that SBO-NE represents a promising multi-target therapeutic candidate with broad-spectrum efficacy across multiple ocular conditions associated with digital device exposure. A lipase with strong alkaline preference and broad tolerance was identified. • Catalytic efficiency increased by 360-fold via an integrated engineering strategy. • Lid dynamics modulation improves activity through mutations outside the lid region. A deep-sea alkaline lipase, My Lip2, from Moritella yayanosii was identified from a metagenomic library of 1,048,576 genes. The wild-type enzyme preferred medium- to long-chain p-nitrophenyl esters, with optimal activity at pH 10.5 and 40 °C, but its specific activity was only 2.93 U/mg toward p -nitrophenyl palmitate. To improve performance, we used a structure- and sequence-guided strategy targeting noncatalytic residues around the catalytic center and lid region. Combinatorial engineering produced triple A271F/V250L/L231P and quadruple A271F/V250L/L231P/T300K (4 M), with comparable specific activities of 743.4 and 745.4 U/mg; 4 M was chosen for its high activity and improved thermal tolerance. This variant showed ∼ 196–fold higher catalytic efficiency ( k cat / K m ) toward p –nitrophenyl palmitate, with increased V max and k cat . Molecular docking, kinetics, and simulations indicated that the substitutions support a more open and catalytically accessible lid conformation, facilitating substrate access and turnover. Comparison with reported lipases indicated that My Lip2 and 4 M combine alkaline preference, medium– to long–chain activity, and improved performance. This work provides a high–performance deep–sea alkaline lipase and suggests that catalytic efficiency can be improved by tuning noncatalytic residues that influence the catalytic–center microenvironment and lid dynamics, without mutating the catalytic triad or redesigning the lid. Adsorption capacity of sea cucumber collagen crude extract (CCE) for characteristic flavor compounds in a gas-mediated environment was compared. The results revealed the CCE-Flavor system stabilizes after 240 min of adsorption time, manifested as a non-linear binding relationship. When the four compounds compete and coexist, the system reached a dynamic equilibrium. Meanwhile, hydrophobic interactions serve as the primary driving force between CCE and flavors. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and fluorescence (FL) spectroscopy analyses demonstrated that saturated concentrations of flavor compounds can induce changes in the secondary and tertiary structures of CCE. The decrease in α-helix content, the depolymerization of proteins, and the increase in hydrophobic groups within CCE create additional binding sites for flavors. This study establishes a foundation for understanding the interaction mechanism between sea cucumber protein and flavor substances by analyzing the conformational changes of CCE and the adsorption behavior of these flavor substances.

Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (RAZIBs) have emerged as promising candidates for large-scale energy storage systems, owing to their low cost, high safety, and environmental benignity. However, their practical application is hindered by intrinsic limitations of cathode materials, including sluggish Zn 2+ diffusion kinetics, poor electrical conductivity, and structural degradation during cycling. Herein, we report a facile hydrothermal strategy to synthesize Ag-doped MnO 2 cathode with uniform urchin-like nanostructures surrounded by nanowires as high-performance cathodes for RAZIBs. The optimal 5 wt% Ag doping yields denser nanowire arrays, namely 5Ag/MnO 2 , increases accessible active sites, and introduces lattice defects while preserving the tetragonal MnO 2 crystal structure ( I 4 /m ). The electrochemical characterization demonstrated that 5Ag/MnO 2 exhibited significantly enhanced kinetics, including lower charge-transfer resistance, reduced polarization, and higher Zn 2+ diffusion coefficient. Consequently, the 5Ag/MnO 2 cathode delivered a high initial discharge capacity of 153.4 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 and superior long-term cycling stability (the discharge specific capacity remained at 135.5 mAh g −1 and 88.3% capacity retention after 500 cycles). Mechanism studies via ex situ XRD, XPS, and CV reveal a reversible Zn 2+ /H + storage mechanism involving phase transformation between MnO 2 and ZnMn 2 O 4 , with mixed capacitive and intercalation behavior. The enhanced performance is attributed to Ag doping facilitating rapid ion diffusion, improving electronic conductivity, and stabilizing the hierarchical structure. This work provides a viable strategy for designing high-performance MnO 2 -based cathodes for advanced zinc-ion batteries, advancing the practical application of RAZIBs.

In this paper, 3D nano-silver trees/sea urchin-like gold Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) substrates were prepared by chemical reduction method, characterized by SEM, EDS, UV–Vis and XRD et.al, and the preparation process was optimized using Rhodamine B (RB) as the Raman signal molecule. The SERS characteristics of Uric Acid on this substrate were investigated and the results showed that the SERS substrate had a Raman enhancement factor of 1.9 × 10 7 for RB, and also had a significant Raman enhancement effect on Uric Acid. The SERS intensity ( I SERS ) at 1400 cm −1 showed a good linear relationship with the logarithm value of uric acid concentration (log C ) between the range of 5 × 10 −4 M to 1 × 10 −7 M. The linear fitting equation was I SERS = 890 (log C ) + 8066 (R 2 = 0.983), and the LOD = 2.8 × 10 − 8 M. The spiked test was performed in human serum with recoveries ranging from 82.86% to 125.13% and RSD (n = 3) < 3.5%.

Fucosylated glycosaminoglycan (FG) from Holothuroidea exhibits notable structural diversity and multiple biological activities. This study investigated the HfFG isolated from the sea cucumber Holothuria floridana , focusing on its chemical structure and biological activities. Structural analysis of eleven oligosaccharides (a-k) and a depolymerized product (dHfFG-II) using NMR identified the HfFG backbone as chondroitin sulfate E (CS-E), with various branches, including L-Fuc 2S4S , L-Fuc 3S4S , L-Fuc 4S , and the unique disaccharide D-GalNAc 4S -α1,2-L-Fuc 3S4S , attached at C-3 of GlcA. A high L-Fuc 2S4S (40 %) and disaccharide branch (35 %) content allowed their contiguous distribution within the CS-E chain, as evidenced by the predominant hexasaccharides (i, j) in size-homogeneous Fr4 and the novel nonasaccharide k in Fr5. Notably, previously unreported branches and sequences in HfFG were confirmed, offering new understanding of the natural HfFG structure. HfFG showed potent inhibitory activities on the intrinsic tenase complex (iXase), heparanase, and P-selectin binding to PSGL-1. Depolymerization selectively modulated these activities, preserving anti-iXase potency while attenuating heparanase and P-selectin inhibition. These activities were dependent on oligosaccharide chain length and sequence. Comparing the activities of FG and its oligosaccharides highlights their potential for the rational design of targeted inhibitors of heparanase or P-selectin binding to PSGL-1, with significant implications for therapeutic applications.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease with limited therapeutic options. This study investigates the protective effects of bioactive peptides derived from sea anemone (ACPs), prepared by enzymatic hydrolysis, in a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced murine model of UC. Notably, the peptide ERRK was identified as a dominant component of the ACPs mixture. Remarkably, low-dose ACPs (200 mg/kg) demonstrated superior efficacy over higher doses in ameliorating disease severity, as evidenced by reduced disease activity index (DAI) scores, increased colon length, and improved histopathology. ACPs significantly downregulated pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6) and upregulated anti-inflammatory cytokines (TGF-β, IL-10), while restoring intestinal barrier integrity via increased expression of tight junction proteins (ZO-1, Occludin, Claudin-1). Multi-omics analyses revealed that ACPs remodeled gut microbiota composition, enriched beneficial genera ( Muribaculum , Prevotella ), and modulated host serum metabolites, particularly pathways related to butyrate and tryptophan metabolism. These findings underscore the potential of ACPs, especially at low doses, as a novel functional food for UC management through integrated modulation of the gut microbiota-metabolite-immune axis.

Exigent demands for multifunctional composites integrating proficient thermal management and electromagnetic shielding functionalities arise directly from the accelerating sophistication and power intensification of modern electronic systems. Drawing inspiration from the efficient grasping tentacles of sea anemones, this study pioneers a bioinspired strategy for thermal and electromagnetic management in high-power electronics: architecting bioinspired carbon nanotubes (CNTs) interfaces on copper foam. Notably, the sea anemone tentacle-like CNTs architected on copper foam not only anchor abundant poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene-styrene)/n-docosane to enhance the composites’ latent heat capacity and leakage resistance but also interconnect with expanded graphite to establish multi-path thermal conduction networks while creating electromagnetic wave-reflecting heterogeneous interfaces. By leveraging CNTs as structural bridges, this design integrates the copper foam, expanded graphite, and polymer matrix into a continuous composite (CuFCE-2), achieving superb thermal conductivity (4.71 W/m·K). Consequently, CuFCE-2 excels in thermal management, suppressing chip temperatures by 60.6 °C (transient shock) and 15.7 °C (steady state). Critically, synergistic coordination across these bioinspired heterogeneous interfaces achieves prominent electromagnetic interference shielding, averaging 111.1 dB in the X-band (8.2 to 12.4 GHz). Collectively, the straightforward preparation method and exceptional properties of CuFCE-2 endow it with substantial application potential in electronics and communications, aerospace and defense, as well as new energy and energy storage systems.

While conventional synthetic antifouling agents (AFs) threaten coral reef ecosystems, the environmental safety profiles of naturally-derived AFs remain inadequately studied. To this end, a synthetic AF Cu 2 O, and 7 naturally-derived ones (7-Amino-4-methylcoumarin (AMC), butenolide, ε-polylysine (EPL), camptothecin (CPT), eugenol, gramine, and BAF-1) were chosen for a comparative study to reveal the physiological responses of coral Montipora capricornis . The selected AF concentration was 50 μg/L, referenced from Cu 2 O bleaching-inducing concentration. After 15 days, Cu 2 O demonstrated the most substantial adverse effects: tissue loss and bleaching severity, zooxanthellae density reduction, chlorophyll a (Chl a ) content decline, and antioxidant enzyme activity alteration; while butenolide had the least significant effects; and the rest AFs showed intermediate stress responses. Further proteomic landscapes focusing on Cu 2 O and butenolide revealed that Cu 2 O had intensely downregulated proteins involved in photosynthesis, the Calvin cycle, glycolysis, the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, and calcification in both symbiont and coral host. Notably, butenolide had no effect on calcification-related proteins. This integrative proteomics-physiological approach represents the first simultaneous assessment of multiple naturally-derived antifoulants on coral holobiont responses, revealing distinct mechanisms of toxicity divergence between metallic and non-metallic compounds. Notably, butenolide preferentially suppresses energy metabolism while sparing calcification-related proteins, suggesting fundamentally different toxicological pathways than Cu-based alternatives.
