Silicon suboxides (SiO x ) are promising anodes for lithium-ion batteries, but their practical application is hindered by severe volume fluctuation and sluggish (de)lithiation kinetics. Herein, a hierarchical disproportionated-SiO x -based composite, D-SiO x @NC/C@CNTs/rGO-2, consisting of disproportionated SiO x (D-SiO x ) with in situ generated Si/SiO 2 domains, a nitrogen-doped carbon/carbon (NC/C) interphase, and an interconnected CNTs/rGO conductive framework, is constructed through thermal disproportionation, interphase engineering, and multidimensional conductive-network design. Thermal disproportionation induces the in situ formation of Si domains embedded in a SiO 2 buffering matrix, in which Si provides lithium-storage activity while SiO 2 alleviates volume variation and enhances structural stability. Meanwhile, a conformal nitrogen-doped carbon interphase mitigates chemo-mechanical stress and stabilizes the active interface, and the intertwined CNTs/rGO framework builds an efficient conductive network. As a result, the optimized anode delivers a reversible capacity of 876.4 mAh·g −1 after 500 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 , with a capacity retention of 83.7%, while electrode swelling is suppressed to ≈52% versus ≈159% for bare D-SiO x . Operando electrochemical impedance spectroscopy combined with distribution of relaxation times reveals reduced interfacial polarization and faster apparent Li + transport. A pre-lithiated LFP||D-SiO x @NC/C@CNTs/rGO-2 full cell also shows an initial Coulombic efficiency of 96.15% and stable cycling over 200 cycles.

To overcome the limitations in barrier and heat-sealing properties hindering the use of cellulose-based biomaterials in packaging, a high-performance zein/cellulose/SiOₓ/zein composite was developed for food packaging with multifunctional attributes. Zein/cellulose composites were prepared using filter paper (FP) as the cellulose substrate, adjusting the internal structure of zein and the amount of external plasticizers to enhance the hydrophobic and barrier characteristics of zein coatings. Subsequently, a compact SiOₓ coating was applied onto the composite surface through plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) to further improve barrier performance. Response surface methodology (RSM) was utilized to optimize the heat-sealing properties of the zein-based sealing layer, resulting in the creation of a stratified zein/cellulose/SiOₓ/zein composite with integrated hydrophobicity, barrier performance, and heat sealability. The bio-based composite, through synergistically optimizing individual material layer properties within its layered structure, fulfills the practical requirements of food packaging by demonstrating a water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of 35.73 g/(m²·d) and an oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of 93.7 cm³ /(m²·d), comparable to commercial polyethylene terephthalate (PET) materials. It exhibits exceptional mechanical properties, including a tensile strength of 24.29 MPa, an elongation at break of 6.63%, and a Young's modulus of 934.00 MPa. Furthermore, it shows remarkable moisture resistance and biodegradability, ensuring effective food preservation and complete soil degradation within 21 days. This research introduces an innovative technical approach and establishes a theoretical framework for developing environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional paper-plastic-aluminum composite packaging materials.

High-capacity SiO x anode materials are difficult to commercialize due to poor conductivity and large volume fluctuations. Constructing nanostructured SiO x /C composites has been proven as one of the effective approaches. However, the structural design of a SiO x /C composite usually involves the use of templates and relies on chemical etching and organic solvents to remove the template, which causes environmental pollution and hinders the reuse of templates. This study proposes a green template strategy. By exploiting its phase transition of poly( N -isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) at specific temperatures, a nanoscale template is provided for the hydrolysis and deposition process of silicon source and solves the problem when removing template. The prepared SiO x @NC is features a gradient distribution of silicon valence states, as demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy depth profiling. N-doped carbon coating constructs a stable interfacial framework that facilitates electron transport and lithium-ion diffusion. The discharge capacity of SiO x @NC was maintained at 612.2 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at a current density of 1 A g −1 . The material in the Li-ion full cell delivers a reversible capacity of 117.57 mAh g −1 , demonstrating its promising practical applications in LIBs. Our work will open up a feasible and eco-friendly preparation path for silicon-based anode materials in high-energy-density and long-life LIBs.

Si, as the most promising anode with high theoretical capacity for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), is hampered in commercial application by its poor electrical conductivity and significant volume expansion. Herein, the core-shell Si@SiO x /C@C-Ar (SSC-A) or Si@SiO x /C@C-H 2 /Ar (SSC-H) composites are purposefully designed by in situ introduction of inorganic SiO x in pure Ar or H 2 /Ar atmosphere to realize a Si-based anode for LIBs. By introducing different atmospheres, the valence states of SiO x are regulated. The inorganic transition layer formed by the combination of SiO x with higher average valence and asphalt-derived carbon demonstrates better performance in both stabilizing the core-shell structure and inhibiting the agglomeration of Si particles. Given these advantages, the SSC-A electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical performance (1163 mAh g −1 after 400 cycles at 1 A g −1 ), and the commercial blended graphite-SSC-A electrode reaches a specific capacity of 442 mAh g −1 with 74.8% capacity retention under the same conditions. Even the SSC-A electrode without Super P maintains an ultrahigh discharge specific capacity of 803 mAh g −1 with 60.6% after cycling. Importantly, the full batteries based on SSC-A without Super P achieve a discharge specific capacity of 126 mAh g −1 with 28.2% capacity decay after 200 cycles, demonstrating the superior commercial application potential.

Silicon suboxide (SiOx, 0 < x < 2) is a promising anode material for lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries due to its high theoretical capacity, yet the application of SiOx anodes is limited by their low electrical conductivity and drastic volume expansion. Although integrating SiOx nanoparticles with carbon materials can mitigate these issues, achieving both uniform dispersion of SiOx nanoparticles within the carbon matrix and structural stability remains a significant challenge when using only conventional mechanical mixing, surface coating, and sol–gel methods. Herein, a combined sol–gel and soft-templating method is employed to encapsulate mesoporous SiOx@carbon (SiOx@C) spheres (m-SiOx@CS) within a three-dimensionally ordered macroporous carbon (3DOMC) framework, yielding a nanocomposite (3DOMC/m-SiOx@CS). In m-SiOx@CS, the uniformly dispersed SiOx nanoparticles and carbon provide abundant conductive interfaces to enhance reaction kinetics, and the mesoporous structure enables rapid mass transfer. Meanwhile, 3DOMC provides a stable skeleton to ensure the structural stability of the electrode during cycling. As a result, the 3DOMC/m-SiOx@CS electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical performance and cycling stability, maintaining a high reversible capacity of 488.1 mAh g–1 after 2000 cycles at 1 A g–1. Furthermore, the assembled 3DOMC/m-SiOx@CS||LiFePO4 Li-ion full batteries can maintain a high capacity of 82.5 mAh g–1 after 1000 cycles at 1 C. This study offers a broadly applicable structural design strategy for high-performance SiOx-based anodes.

In this work, the atomic oxygen (AO) erosion-resistance effect and mechanism of the Perhydropolysilazane (PHPS) coating were investigated from the perspective of element distribution in the depth direction. The results revealed that the coating demonstrated good adhesion and intrinsic AO erosion-resistance, which was attributed to the composition gradient formed in the coating. Moreover, the oxygen ratio of the SiOx on top layer of the coating could be elevated during AO exposure, strengthening the Ar ion etching durability of the coating. According to these results, an AO erosion-resistance mechanism model of the PHPS-derived SiOx coating was finally obtained. Keywords:PHPS;silica coating;atomic oxygen;erosion-corrosion;resistance mechanism

Si possesses a high theoretical specific capacity as anode material for Li-ion batteries. However, it has poor electrical conductivity and severe volume effect during charge-discharge processes, resulting in substantial internal resistance and significantly reduced available capacity. These issues can be greatly mitigated by encapsulating Si nanoparticles within a carbonous material. Hence, network precursors are synthesised herein to encapsulate Si nanoparticles by in situ polymerisation of acrylic acid and melamine. After freeze-drying, the precursors are pyrolysed under Ar atmosphere to obtain homogeneous N-rich porous Si@SiO x /NC composites. A fibrous network structure is acquired by using appropriate amounts of polyacrylic acid and Si. Such a structure provides an outstanding electron transmission network and effectively buffers the volume change of Si to maintain a stable electrode structure. The results show that when the content of Si nanoparticles in the composite is 35.2 wt%, the prepared Si@SiO x /NC−2 composite has abundant micropores (267.90 m 2 g −1 ) and mesopores (17.48 m 2 g −1 ). The material shows an initial discharge-specific capacity of 1833.6 mAh g −1 and Coulombic efficiency of 65%. After 150 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 , the discharge-specific capacity is still as high as 922.8 mAh g −1 . The excellent electrochemical performance of the Si@SiO x /NC composites is due to the three-dimensional conductive structure. The unique construction could play an important role in expanding the commercial application of Si-based anode materials in Li-ion batteries.

The prelithiated SiO x anode showcases markedly improved Li-storage capabilities compared to its unlithiated counterparts, yet it faces hurdles such as slurry gassing, electrolyte deterioration, and capacity fade attributed to residual alkali and an unstable electrolyte/anode interface. To tackle these challenges, we propose a strategic utilization of residual alkali by creating an in-situ γ -LiAlO 2 functional layer on the prelithiated SiO x @C anode material. This is accomplished by incorporating a minor amount of Al 2 O 3 into the SiO x @C/LiH precursor mixture before the solid-phase prelithiation process. The resulting modified prelithiated SiO x @C anode with in-situ formed electrolyte-isolating γ -LiAlO 2 layer exhibits no discernible slurry gas generation within 7 days and substantially mitigates side reactions with the electrolyte, thereby boosting the initial coulombic efficiency and cycling stability of the SiO x @C anode. In half-cell evaluations, the prelithiated SiO x @C anode demonstrates a high Li-storage capacity of 1323 mAh g −1 and an impressive initial coulombic efficiency of 91.09%. When assessed in a 3.2 Ah 18650 cylindrical battery, the prelithiated SiO x @C anode showcases exceptional cyclability, retaining 81% of its capacity after 1000 cycles, underscoring its potential for practical applications. This study introduces a scalable and cost-effective prelithiation technique that propels the development and practical deployment of Si-based anodes by resolving persistent scientific challenges with the use of inexpensive additives.

Recently, high-energy density cells containing nickel-rich cathodes and silicon-based anodes have become a practical solution for increasing the driving range of electric vehicles. However, their long-term durability and storage performance is comparatively poor because of the unstable cathode-electrolyte-interphase (CEI) of the high-reactivity cathode and the continuous solid-electrolyte-interphase (SEI) growth. In this work, we study several electrolyte systems consisting of various additives, such as S-containing (1,3,2-dioxathiolane 2,2-dioxide (DTD), DTD + prop-1-ene-1,3-sultone (PES), methylene methanedisulfonate (MMDS)) and Si-containing (tris(trimethylsilyl) phosphate (TTSP) and tris(trimethylsilyl) borate (TMSB)) compounds, in comparison to the baseline electrolyte (BL = 1.0 M LiPF 6 + 3:5:2 w-w:w EC: EMC: DEC + 0.5 wt% lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) + 2 wt% lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) + 2 wt% fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) + 1 wt% 1,3-propane sultone (PS)). Generally, electrolytes with Si-containing additives, particularly BL + 0.5% TTSP, show a lower impedance increase in the full cell, better beginning-of-life (BOL) performance, less reversible capacity loss through long-term cycles and better storage at elevated temperatures than do electrolytes with S-containing additives. On the contrary, electrolytes with S-containing additives exhibit the advantage of low SEI impedance but yield a worse performance in the full cell than do those with Si-containing additives. The difference between two types of additives is attributed to the distinct function of the electrodes, which is characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which was performed on full cells and half cells with fresh and harvested electrodes.

Exfoliating graphite to graphene has attracted great attention due to the fantastic properties of graphene available for designing graphene-based materials or devices. Besides the classic solution method, herein a unique role of TiO 2 in exfoliating graphite to be graphene layers effectively is reported. As a paradigm, this discovered effect of TiO 2 is significant for preparing high-performance graphene-modified SiO x -based anode in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), in which the graphite is in situ exfoliated mechanically by TiO 2 to be multilayered graphene (i.e., MLG) and then the SiO x is wrapped by the MLG to construct a SiO x /TiO 2 @MLG. In this case, an extremely high capacity of 1484 mAh g −1 , long lifespan over 1200 cycles at 2 A g −1 , as well as good performance in full LIBs (vs nickel-rich cathode) are demonstrated. It is confirmed that the MLG can enhance electric conductivity, mitigate electrolyte decomposition, and alleviate volume effect of the SiO x effectively. This result is hard to be achieved using other kinds of metal oxide besides TiO 2 . It is hoped that the SiO x /TiO 2 @MLG is practical for pursuing LIBs with an energy density beyond 300 Wh kg −1 . In addition, it is believed the ingenious strategy is applicable for designing more functional materials with greater capabilities.

For the development of sustainable crop-based energy materials, phosphorus and nitrogen binary doped porous C/SiO x composites (PN@C/SiO x ) have been fabricated using rice husks as the Si and C source and (NH 4 ) 3 PO 4 as the P and N source through a facile and environmentally friendly approach. The obtained PN@C/SiO x composites possess a hierarchical porous structure and SiO x particles are uniformly distributed in the P,N-doped C skeleton. The porous P,N-doped C skeleton not only facilitates the ion transport and penetration of electrolyte, but also alleviates the volume expansion and agglomeration of SiO x particles. The P and N co-doping can generate additional defective sites on the C matrix surface, which enhances electronic conductivity and energy storage performance. Due to the above advantages, the optimized PN@C/SiO x composite as anode of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) presents an excellent reversible specific capacity of 1078 mAh/g at 0.1 A/g and improved initial coulombic efficiency (CE) of 73.6%. Even at 1.0 A/g, a steady specific capacity of 622 mAh/g still could be achieved after 1000 cycles. It is believed that this strategy has great potential in large-scale production of new energy materials for future practical applications.

Silicon oxide (SiOx) is becoming a hot spot in the research of anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. However, the low initial coulombic efficiency (ICE), weak conductivity, unsatisfied rate performance, and significant volume changes during cycling of SiOx have hindered its commercial application. Herein, a silicon–carbon composite material (SiOx/C–Sn@NC) was synthesized, featuring metal tin that is embedded within and on the surface of the SiOx framework. Additionally, a nitrogen-doped carbon layer was incorporated into the material to further mitigate volume changes. Benefitted from the discrepant lithiation/delithiation potentials of Sn and Si, the formed structure significantly limits the volume changes of the formed anode during the cycle, enhancing the cycle life and stability of the SiOx/C–Sn@NC material. Additionally, multiple nodes are provided in the part where the bridged Sn is in contact with the N-doped carbon to enhance the Li+ diffusion during charge and discharge and overall conductivity, promoting the lithium-ion diffusion kinetics. The SiOx/C–Sn@NC anode displays an ICE of 73.42% at 0.5 A g–1, retaining a capacity of 680 mAh g–1 after 500 cycles. In addition, this anode also exhibits excellent cycle performance of 591 mAh g–1 after 500 cycles, with an ICE of 70.37% at a current of 2 A g–1. The prominent cycle performance and electrochemical stability of SiOx/C–Sn@NC far surpass those of commercial silicon–carbon and graphite, offering a new pathway for the commercial application of silicon oxide-based anodes.
