Bismuth oxychloride-sodium alginate hydrogel derived interface desalination solar evaporator for environmental remediation

Xiuling Li,Yangyang Peng,Yanan Pang,Bo Ge,Limin Zhao,Tonghui Zhang,Guina Ren,Zhaozhu Zhang

In order to solve the pollution faced by traditional evaporators, an interface evaporator containing a floating unit and a bismuth oxychloride composite hydrogel unit was constructed. The innovation lies in: 1. The infiltrating behavior of the floating unit is non-wetting; 2. The water contact angle of the floating layer is 160° and the construction strategy can be extended to sponges, fabrics and felts. The obtained bismuth oxychloride composite hydrogel retained an excellent water supply and salt suppression capacity, with the water droplets expanding within 120 ms and reaching a steam production rate of 1.82 kg·m −2 ·h −1 . From band structure calculation, the conduction and valence band are −0.928 eV and 1.502 eV, respectively. Comparative experiments and ESR analyses demonstrated the h + degraded species. It is hoped that the construction of the above interface evaporator could bring a new solution for environmental restoration.

Therapeutic strategies: Bioactive hydrogels oxidized sodium alginate/strontium/betamethasone for preventing intrauterine adhesion

Fengling Wu,Qiuju Miao,Junying Zhou,Ruixia Guo,Mengyu Chen,Ningyao Tong,Yamin Zhao,Luojie Qiu,Liping Han,Siyu Li,Cheng Chen,Shenyu Yang,Lei Chang

Intrauterine adhesion (IUA) is an endometrial damage repair disorder that leads to menstrual loss, amenorrhea, and infertility in women; therefore, addressing this dilemma is a critical challenge. In this study, a multifunctional hydrogel, comprising oxidized sodium alginate (OSA), strontium carbonate (SrCO 3 ), and betamethasone 21-phosphate sodium (BSP), was formulated to facilitate angiogenesis, reduce fibrosis, and support tissue repair in the treatment of IUA. The composite hydrogels showed significant bioactivity on human endometrial stromal cells (HESCs) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), promoting the injured HESCs repair, reversing the degree of fibrosis to a certain extent, and enhancing the proliferation and migration of HUVECs. These results were also verified in the IUA model of sexually mature female rats. Compared with the model group, the selection of the appropriate hydrogel significantly increased endometrial thickness ( p  < 0.01), the number of glands ( p  < 0.001), decreased the degree of fibrosis ( p  < 0.05), and Vimentin ( p  < 0.01), CK19 ( p  < 0.01), CD31 ( p  < 0.01), and Ki67 ( p  < 0.01) molecular expression increased remarkably. In summary, in situ injection of this multifunctional hydrogel into the uterine cavity not only serves as a physical barrier, isolating the damaged endometrium, but also gradually releases drugs as the hydrogel degrades. This multifunctional hydrogel promotes endometrial proliferation and angiogenesis while reducing fibrosis, and provides therapeutic strategies for patients with clinical IUA.

Preparation and properties of drug-carrying microspheres of konjac glucomannan/sodium alginate/hydroxyapatite

Yanjun Li,Jia Liu,Laijun Yao

Bone tissue engineering microspheres have become a prominent focus in bone repair research. This is due to their potential for targeted therapy and controlled drug release. The current research direction of bone tissue engineering microspheres primarily emphasizes composite microspheres. In this context, konjac glucomannan (KGM) has emerged as a promising composite microsphere preparation material for bone tissue engineering due to its exceptional water-absorbing and swelling properties, as well as its high biocompatibility. In order to expand the application of KGM in the field of bone tissue engineering, microspheres were designed and prepared in this paper by using KGM, hydroxyapatite (HA), and sodium alginate (SA). The quaternary amination modification of KGM was carried out to prepare the white flocculated Cationic Konjac Glucomannan (CKGM). CKGM was prepared in an amorphous state, and FT-IR and 1 H NMR results proved the successful synthesis of CKGM. The preparation of KGM/SA/HA and CKGM/SA/HA microspheres with rough surfaces involved emulsification, cross-linking, and coating methods. These microspheres exhibited absorption peaks for SA and CKGM. In addition, the XRD diffraction peaks of the two were found to be essentially identical to those of HA. The experimental results demonstrated that the drug release process of both drug-carrying microspheres was pH-responsive, with a direct correlation between the pH level and the cumulative release rate, with lower pH values corresponding to higher release rates. And the cumulative release rate of CKGM/SA/HA@DOX microspheres was slightly lower than that of KGM/SA/HA@DOX microspheres. Secondly, both microspheres had good biocompatibility, thermal stability and bacteriostatic properties.

Polydopamine-modified sodium alginate hydrogel for microplastics removal: Adsorption performance, characteristics, and kinetics

Mengzhen Han,Zihan Wang,Ziyue Xie,Mengxin Hou,Zhenpeng Gao

The potential health hazards of micro/nanoplastics in food have become a significant concern. This study developed a Polydopamine-modified sodium alginate hydrogel (PMSAH) for removing microplastics in daily drinking water. The hydrogel's performance, characteristics, and kinetics for microplastic removal were systematically evaluated. Results demonstrated that the incorporation of polydopamine reduced the hydrogel's surface zeta potential and increased its adsorption capacity for microplastics. PMSAH5 exhibited the highest removal efficiency, reaching approximately 99.6 %. Additionally, polydopamine-modified sodium alginate hydrogel exhibited higher elasticity and thermal stability. The hydrogel successfully adsorbed microplastics, regardless of their size and surface charge. This adsorption was driven by the combined action of multiple forces, resulting in multilayer adsorption. The unique advantages of polydopamine-mediated multi-molecular interactions present a promising and environmentally friendly approach for effective removal of microplastics in daily drinking water.

Preparation and characterization of hydrophobically-modified sodium alginate derivatives as carriers for fucoxanthin

Lingyu Han,Ruiyi Zhai,Bing Hu,Peter A. Williams,Jixin Yang,Cunzhi Zhang,Nuo Dong,Tingting Li

Micelles are nano-architectured structures capable of encapsulating hydrophobic substances in aqueous solutions, thereby improving their stability, solubility, and bioavailability to control the release of bioactive compounds. In this study, the sodium alginate backbone was modified via a hydrophobic modification scheme where octyl chains were covalently attached to the alginate chains via esterification reactions. Fourier-transformed infrared spectrometry (FTIR), 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to characterize the structure of the sodium alginate derivatives of varying molar mass (ALG-C8). Fluorescence spectroscopy, surface tension measurements, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were employed to assess the self-assembly performance of ALG-C8. The three methods produced consistent results, indicating that self-assembly decreased with higher molar mass. The self-assembled ALG-C8 micelles were utilized to encapsulate fucoxanthin. The loading capacity (LC) and encapsulation efficiency (EE) were determined using UV–Vis spectrophotometry. The molar mass of ALG-C8 has a key influence on fucoxanthin loading and release behavior. The ALG-C8 molecules with the lowest molar mass produced micelles with the smallest hydration diameter, resulting in the highest LC and EE. Furthermore, the release of fucoxanthin is significantly influenced by the pH and ionic strength of the medium. ALG-C8 micellar-like aggregates exhibit resistance to low pH and high ionic strength environments, releasing encapsulated material at the target site under alkaline conditions. Therefore, synthesized ALG-C8 is a potential candidate for preparing pH-responsive self-assembled micellar-like aggregates, enabling targeted delivery and gradual release of hydrophobic functional food components.

Sodium alginate/ Al2O3 fiber nanocomposite aerogel with thermal insulation and flame retardancy properties

Huan Xu,Cui Liu,Wei Guo,Nian Li,Yang Chen,Xiaolin Meng,Mengjie Zhai,Shudong Zhang,Zhenyang Wang

The severe environmental pollution issues require the urgent development of new green building insulation materials. Biomass aerogel is deemed as an optimal candidate to replace petroleum-based insulation materials owing to its significant advantages such as low thermal conductivity, eco-friendliness, and high biocompatibility. The interaction of the composite two-phase interface and the fabrication of multilevel pore structures have a significant impact on the comprehensive performance of aerogel applications. In this study, a tunable double-crosslinked network skeleton structure construction of sodium alginate (SA) composite with Al 2 O 3 fibers is proposed, where Ca 2+ induces the sol–gel transition to form a second layer of strong bonding force to effectively support the skeleton structure, and various cross-linking modes, such as ionic bonding, hydrogen bonding and physical cross-linking, are used to synergistically improve the SA aerogel and endow it with multifunctionality. The prepared Al 2 O 3 fiber/SA (SAA) aerogels achieve excellent flame retardancy and self-extinguishing smoke suppression (peak heat release rate as low as 9.7 kW m −2 , and total smoke release rate in the low range of 0.5 m 2  m −2 ). It also has superior mechanical strength (high specific compression modulus of ∼53.3 KN m kg −1 ) and can withstand weights over 2600 times its own weight without deformation, besides the broad range of self-cleaning properties and outstanding biocompatibility. The creation of a double-crosslinked three-dimensional aerogel network via reinforcement of inorganic electrospun fibers provides new insights for eco-friendly insulation materials in construction.

Junjie Hu,Yinchun Hu,Min Kang,Xuanyu Liu,Baogang Wu,Lining Wang,Yan Wei,Di Huang

Hemostasis of deep irregular wounds is a severe problem in clinical practice. The development of rapid-acting hemostatic agents for deep and irregular wound is urgently needed. Here, sodium alginate/carboxycellulose/polydopamine (SA/CNF/PDA) microspheres was prepared by reverse emulsification and crosslinking with Ca 2+ , and SA/CNF/PDA composite hemostatic microspheres with porous structure were obtained by freeze-drying. SA/CNF/PDA composite hemostatic microspheres exhibited excellent porosity and water absorption which could rapidly absorb blood on the wound surface. Moreover, SA/CNF/PDA composite microspheres demonstrated remarkable hemostatic capabilities both in vitro and in vivo. It exhibited strong hemostatic performance in models of mouse tail-break and liver damage. Especially in liver injury model, it was completely hemostatic in 95 s, and blood loss (19.3 mg). The hemostatic efficacy of the SA/CNF/PDA composite microspheres was amplified through the stimulation of both exogenous and endogenous coagulation pathways. Therefore, SA/CNF/PDA composite hemostatic microspheres are suitable for rapid hemostasis of deep irregular wounds which are potential rapid hemostatic material for surgical application.

Preparation of pH-responsive starch/sodium alginate hybrid hydrogels for smart monitoring applications

Juan Lei,Kunlin Chen,Hua Qiu

Bio-based hydrogels have garnered significant attention in flexible sensing and biomedicine due to their exceptional biocompatibility and biodegradability. However, the developing flexible sensors capable of real-time biochemical monitoring during human activities remains a formidable challenge. In this study, we fabricated a novel pH-responsive poly(acrylic acid)/sodium alginate/starch hydrogels (PAA/SA/SH) with inherent antimicrobial properties through thermal polymerization. The hydrogel was synthesized by incorporating maize starch and sodium alginate with pH-sensitive itaconic acid and acrylic acid, while d -limonene was integrated to impart antimicrobial efficacy. The resulting PAA/SA/SH hydrogels exhibited remarkable pH-dependent swelling behavior, with an equilibrium swelling ratio increasing from 400 % at pH 2 to 9200 % at pH 12. This substantial swelling variation directly influenced the hydrogel's electrical conductivity, which was modulated by changes in volume and water content. Furthermore, the hydrogels demonstrated excellent biodegradability, adhesion, transparency, mechanical properties, stable sensing properties, and potent antimicrobial activity. Given these advantages, the pH-responsive behavior of PAA/SA/SH hydrogels holds significant promise for the development of wearable flexible sensors capable of monitoring pH fluctuations in human body fluids, offering potential applications in personalized healthcare and smart diagnostics.

Phosphorylated sodium alginate-filled delignified wood-reinforced transparent wood: Crafting flame-retardant composites

Mingjie Guo,Ying Pan,Shengjun Xu,Wei Wang,Yan Zhang,Shaodan Xu,Dihua Wu,Dong Zhang,Suling Zhang,Ting Lü,Hongting Zhao

Transparent wood (TW), an emerging sustainable material with high optical transmittance and mechanical strength, is hindered by the inherent flammability of its cellulose-lignin matrix, posing fire risks. To address this, we developed an eco-friendly flame-retardant TW by integrating phosphorylated sodium alginate (PSA)-filled delignified wood with polyurethane acrylic resin (PUA). Delignified balsa wood was freeze-dried into a porous structure, functionalized with PSA, and reinforced with UV-cured PUA. Structural characterization confirmed uniform PSA coating on delignified wood channels, introducing phosphorus groups that enhanced thermal stability and flame retardancy. Combustion tests revealed self-extinguishing behavior in PSA-modified delignified woods, reducing peak heat release rate (pHRR) by 67 % and total heat release (THR) by 80 % versus delignified wood. The final PUA/wood-PSA3 composite demonstrated a 27 % pHRR reduction and 47 % lower THR compared to pure PUA, alongside 61 % less smoke emission. Optical transmittance of composites decreased moderately due to PSA's light absorption, while tensile strengths of PUA/wood composites surged to 30 MPa owing to the aligned cellulose scaffold. The flame-retardant mechanisms were investigated using characterization of the char residue and molecular dynamics simulations. These methods demonstrated the effectiveness of phosphorus-induced char formation and radical quenching in enhancing fire safety while preserving essential material properties.

Mengyang Bao,Guangzheng Qin,Wenjun Sun,Congjiu Liu,Yuxi Liu,Wenqian Ding,Yushan Jiang,Chen Yu,Xi Yuan,Shuangjian Yang,Weitao Zhao,Yunhui Xu

At present, flexible sensors are a hot spot in research and experimental development, but the research on flexible sensors that can be used for human motion monitoring still needs to be deepened. In this work, the green material cellulose acetate (CA) was used as the matrix material, the film was made by electrospinning, crushed by a cell grinder and sodium alginate (SA) was added to promote the uniform dispersion of nanofibers in water, and then methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) and MXene nanosheet dispersion were added to make it hydrophobic and good conductivity, and the aerogel precursor solution was prepared, and then the CA/SA/MTMS/MXene aerogel with directional holes was prepared by directional freeze-drying. As a flexible sensor material, it can be used for human wear, monitoring the electrical signals generated by the movement of human joints and other parts, and can still maintain a current of about 0.2 mA after 1000 compression cycles, with good current stability, and is widely used in the field of monitoring human movement. Furthermore, the water contact angle of CA/SA/MTMS/MXene aerogel is maintained above 120° and still shows strong hydrophobicity, which implies that the aerogel has the piezoresistive sensing potential under sweating conditions of the human body.

Curcumin‑sodium alginate-polyvinyl alcohol pH-indicating composite film for shrimp freshness monitoring

Xinghai Huang,Jingjin He,Lu Yao,Ziqi Zhu,Jianwei Luo,Peiyuan Li,Jianhua Wei,Haiyi Zhong

Intelligent food packaging, as an innovative direction for enhancing food quality monitoring capabilities, has garnered extensive attention among consumers and in the research community in recent years. This study constructed composite film materials using sodium alginate (SA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the matrix, loaded with the natural active ingredient curcumin to evaluate the potential of the composite film as an indicator of shrimp freshness. The results revealed that the composite film had a thickness of less than 0.1 mm and could effectively block ultraviolet-visible light. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analyses indicated that curcumin was uniformly distributed within the film matrix. This composite film exhibited strong antioxidant activity (ABTS scavenging rate: 82 %; DPPH scavenging rate: 47.9 %) and reliable pH-responsive characteristics, turning purple or reddish-brown when the pH exceeded 10. This property provides a simple and intuitive method for detecting changes in food quality. In terms of monitoring shrimp freshness, the composite film effectively indicated spoilage. The SA-PVA-CUR30 film changed from light yellow to purple on the fourth day, with a significant increase in the ΔE value (from 34.52 to 51.89), demonstrating optimal indicating performance. In conclusion, this pH-sensitive composite film offers new insights for innovation in food packaging and lays a foundation for the precise control of food quality.
