Heteroatom incorporation into the lattice of host materials as bifunctional electrocatalysts is developed as an effective strategy to promote electrochemical water splitting but challenges remain in the modulation of catalytic activity. Herein, Te-doped CoMoO3 supported on a carbon matrix (Te-CoMoO3@C) is synthesized by lattice engineering with filter paper as a sacrificial carrier and carbon source. The doping of Te can effectively modulate the local electronic structures of Co and Mo sites and significantly boost the electrochemical active surface area and electron transfer, which optimize the reactivity of reaction intermediates with the electrocatalysts. Moreover, the filter paper-derived carbon as a carrier guarantees adequate exposure of the surface active sites and enhances catalytic stability. Impressively, the optimized Te-CoMoO3@C only requires overpotentials of 76 and 215 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. As expected, Te-CoMoO3@C exhibits a low cell voltage of 1.54 V at 10 mA cm−2 for water splitting. This work gives new insights into the rational design of metal oxides and opens up a novel strategy toward preparing efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Low-dimensional lead-based perovskite materials have recently attracted extensive attentions for their diverse structures, unique optoelectronic properties and enhanced stability. However, the toxicity of lead, low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and complex preparation processes limit their practical applications. Herein, we present a simple room-temperature synthesis of orange-emitting lead-free perovskite derivative (NH 4 ) 2 SnCl 6 :Te phosphors with a large quantity at one time. By introducing Te 4+ ions with 5s 2 active lone pairs, (NH 4 ) 2 SnCl 6 :Te exhibits broadband emission peaked at 590 nm, a large full width at half maximum (FWHM) about 127 nm and a maximum PLQY up to 83.51%. Density functional theory calculations combined with comprehensive spectroscopic data reveal that the incorporated Te 4+ ions change the band structure and trigger the formation of Jahn-Teller-like self-trapped excitons (STEs) in [TeCl 6 ] 2− centers. In addition, (NH 4 ) 2 SnCl 6 :Te shows excellent ambient and thermal stabilities. Using (NH 4 ) 2 SnCl 6 :0.5%Te as an orange down-conversion material, highly stable wLEDs with a Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage (CIE) of (0.39, 0.38), correlated color temperature (CCT) of 3855 K, and color rendering index (CRI) of 83 are demonstrated. We expect these results to facilitate the development of low-cost, environmentally friendly and high-performance novel phosphors for future lighting and display technologies.

Van der Waals (vdW)-integrated heterojunctions have been widely investigated in optoelectronics due to their superior photoelectric conversion capability. In this work, 0D bismuth quantum dots (Bi QDs)-decorated 1D tellurium nanotubes (Te NTs) vdW heterojunctions (Te@Bi vdWHs) are constructed by a facile bottom-up assembly process. Transient absorption spectroscopy suggests that Te@Bi vdWH is a promising candidate for new-generation optoelectronic devices with fast response properties. The subsequent experiments and density functional theory calculations demonstrate the vdW interaction between Te NTs and Bi QDs, as well as the enhanced optoelectronic characteristics owing to the plasma effects at the interface between Te NTs and Bi QDs. Moreover, Te@Bi vdWHs-based photodetectors show significantly improved photoresponse behavior in the ultraviolet region compared to pristine Te NTs or Bi QDs-based photodetectors. The proposed integration of vdWHs is expected to pave the way for constructing new nanoscale heterodevices.

In this work, Te/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS)/Cu7Te4 ternary thermoelectric (TE) nanocomposite films were successfully fabricated by physical mixing and then drop casting. An optimum power factor of 65.3 μW/mK2 was acquired from a composite film containing 95 wt % PEDOT:PSS-coated Te (PC/Te) nanorods at 300 K, which was about 5 times as large as that of the PC/Cu7Te4 nanorod film and about 3 times as large as that of the PC/Te nanorod film. The power factor reached 112.3 μW/mK2 when the temperature was 380 K. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and high-resolution STEM were used to observe the detailed internal microstructure of the composite film, revealing that the Te nanorods were single crystalline and the Cu7Te4 rods polycrystalline. The composite film was in fact a three-dimensional network interconnected with the PC/Te and PC/Cu7Te4 nanorods. The enhancement of the TE properties was ascribed to the synergetic effect of the two kinds of nanorods and the double-carrier filtering effect at the two heterointerfaces of Te/PEDOT:PSS and Cu7Te4/PEDOT:PSS. An eight single-leg flexible TE device consisting of the optimized composite film was fabricated, which produced a voltage of 31.2 mV and a maximum output power of 94.7 nW at a temperature gradient of 39 K.

Cesium zirconium halide (e.g., Cs2ZrCl6:Te or CZCT) perovskites have garnered significant interest due to their unique optical properties. However, there have been no reports of CZCT perovskite nanoparticles (PNPs) that simultaneously offer high efficiency and thermal stability. Here, a comprehensive defect suppression strategy is reported to achieve CZCT PNPs with these attributes. First, the inner defects of CZCT perovskite microcrystals (PMCs) are minimized by controlling crystallization kinetics precisely. Second, the PNPs are obtained from PMCs via top-down fabrication, and the surface defects of PNPs are passivated via the hydroxyl groups of alkyl-terminated silica-oligomer shell (ASO). The resulting CZCT@ASO PNPs show the highest photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 96% and high thermal stability among the reported conventional CZCT emitters. Finally, white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) are integrated by using CZCT@ASO PNPs as the down-color converters, achieving a color coordinate of (0.31, 0.33) and a color rendering index of 86. These results demonstrate that core/shell CZCT@ASO PNPs have great potential as phosphors for lighting applications.

In order to enhance the energy efficiency of water electrolysis, it is imperative to devise electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction that are both non-precious metal-based and highly efficient. Efficient catalyst design is generally based on electronic structural engineering. Considering the electronegativity disparity between selenium (Se) and tellurium (Te), the tunable bandgaps, and the conductive metallic nature of Te . We designed a material wherein Te atoms are uniformly doped onto the surface of Cobalt tetra selenide (Co 3 Se 4 ) nanorods, leading to the synthesis of a defect-rich material. Experimental results demonstrate that Te doping in Co 3 Se 4 increases active sites and optimizes the electronic structure of Co cations, enhancing the design of multi-defect structures. This promotes the generation of the Co(oxy) hydroxide (CoOOH) active phase, enhancing catalytic activity by maximizing the binding strength between Co sites and oxygenated intermediates. Te-Co 3 Se 4 nanorods exhibit good catalytic activity for oxygen evolution reactions, with an overpotential of 269 mV at a driving current density of 50 mA cm −2 and excellent stability in alkaline media (over 100 h). This discovery indicates the feasibility of strategically combining various imperfect structures, thereby unlocking the latent potential of diverse catalysts in electrocatalytic reactions.

CdTe thin-film solar cells, as a core component of photovoltaic devices, have been commercially deployed for over 30 years with global installations surpassing 30 GWp. Decommissioning has surged since 2010, showing major material recovery potential from retired modules. However, CdTe thin-film solar cells feature ultra-precise architectures with micron-sized CdTe/CdS/SnO 2 functional layers deposited on glass substrates. This structural complexity and ultralow metal concentrations create significant technical barriers for metal recovery. Current recycling technologies in both literature and practice exhibit insufficient constituent recovery and secondary waste generation, necessitating advanced separation technologies. This study developed an innovative recycling process achieving multi-component recovery: intact glass substrates, high-purity Te powder (99.9 wt%), CdS precipitates (99.0 wt%), and sodium thiostannate (Na 2 SnS 3 ) solutions. There were four steps: (1) Decommissioned modules were heated in air at 300 °C for 1 h to degrade EVA and recover intact back glass; (2) Front glass with functional layers further reacted with NaHS at 400 °C, converting CdTe/CdS/SnO₂ into Te/CdS/SnS₂ powder and recovering clean front glass; (3) Mixed powder was processed at 500 °C for 2 h (<10 Pa), yielding >99.9 wt% Te with 98.31 % ± 2.11 % recovery; (4) Na₂S leaching (140 g/L, L/S = 10:1, 40 °C, 2 h) yielded 99.0 wt% CdS precipitate and Na₂SnS₃ solution with >99 % metal recovery. Material balance analysis and life cycle assessment demonstrated that the proposed technology exhibits superior cost-effectiveness and minimized environmental footprint, while maintaining industrial scalability.

For thermoelectric thin film, the substrate plays an important role during the growing process and produces effects on its thermoelectric properties. Some special kinds of substrates provide an optimal combination of influences on both the structure and thermoelectric properties. In this work, Bi-Sb-Te films are deposited on Si substrates with different initial orientations by magnetron sputtering in two ways: with and without a pre-coating process. The preferred orientations of the Bi-Sb-Te films are greatly affected by the substrates, in which the thin film tends to deposit on Si substrate with (100) initial orientation and high (015)-texture, while the (00l)-textured Bi-Sb-Te film easily deposits on Si substrate with (110) initial orientation. The experimental and theoretical calculation results indicate that Bi-Sb-Te film with (00l)-texture presents good electrical conductivity and a higher power factor than that of film with (015)-texture.

Aqueous Zn–S batteries (AZSBs) have garnered increasing attention in the energy storage field owing to their high capacity, energy density , and cost effectiveness. Nevertheless, sulfur (S) cathodes face challenges, primarily stemming from sluggish reaction kinetics and the formation of an irreversible byproduct (SO 4 2− ) during the charge, hindering the progress of AZSBs. Herein, Te–S bonds within S-based cathodes were introduced to enhance electron and ion transport and facilitate the conversion reaction from zinc sulfide (ZnS) to S. This was achieved by constructing heteroatomic TeS-x@Ketjen black composite cathodes (HM-TeS-x@KB, where x = 36, 9, and 4). The HM-TeS-9@KB electrode exhibits long-term cycling stability, maintaining a capacity decay rate of 0.1 % per cycle over 450 cycles at a current density of 10 A g −1 . Crucially, through a combination of experimental data analysis and theoretical calculations, the impact mechanism of Te on the charge and discharge of S active materials within the HM-TeS-9@KB cathode in AZSBs was investigated. The presence of Te–S bonds boost the intrinsic conductivity and wettability of the HM-TeS-9@KB cathode. Furthermore, during the charge, the interaction of preferentially oxidized Te with S atoms within ZnS promotes the oxidation reaction from ZnS to S and suppresses the irreversible side reaction between ZnS and H 2 O. These findings indicate that the heteroatomization of chalcogen S molecules represents a promising approach for enhancing the electrochemical performance of S cathodes in AZSBs.

An analytical method to accurately determine trace levels of Se and Te is essential to meet the growing importance of these elements to Earth science research. Herein, an in-house assembled photochemical vapour generation (PVG) unit, instead of normal sample nebulisation, with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), was developed for the detection of Se and Te in geological samples. The major parameters that might potentially influence the PVG efficiencies of Se(IV) and Te(IV) were investigated. The unit could fully generate volatile species under 30 s of ultraviolet irradiation in the presence of 15% v / v formic acid, 15% v / v acetic acid and 50 mg l -1 of Co 2+ . Under optimised conditions, the limit of detections (LODs, 3 s , n = 11) of the proposed method were 0.5 ng l -1 for Se and 0.6 ng l -1 for Te. The RSDs of Se and Te were 2.0% and 2.3% (1 μg l -1 , n = 7), respectively. Interference experiments showed that Fe, Ti, V and Cu have certain negative effects, so the standard addition method was used for real sample analysis. Measurement results for eleven CRMs, including soils (GSS-4, GSS-7), sediments (GSD-9, GSD-10) and rocks (GSR-1, GSR-2, GSR-3, GSR-5, AGV-2, GSP-2 and W-2a), were consistent with literature values, and showed better precision, indicating the feasibility of the proposed method for determination of trace Se and Te in geological samples.

The development of single atom catalysts (SACs) with asymmetric active sites by defect regulation provides an encourage potential for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but highly challenging. Herein, N-doped carbon (N-C) anchored atomically dispersed Ni-N 3 site with proximity defects (Ni-N 3 D) induced by Te atoms doping is reported. Benefitting from the inductive effect of proximity defect, the Ni-N 3 D/Te-N-C catalyst performs excellent ORR and HER performance in alkaline and acid condition. Both in situ characterization and theoretical calculation reveal that the existence of proximity defect effect is conducive to lower rate-determining-step energy barrier of ORR and HER, thus accelerating the multielectron reaction kinetics. This work paves a novel strategy for constructing high-activity bifunctional SACs by defect engineering for development of sustainable energy.

Cu 2 MoS 4 became a novel active alternative material to noble metal co-catalysts, which can effectively promote photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. To investigate the effect of Cu 2 MoS 4 on the photocatalytic performance of Zn-VIA compounds, ZnO, ZnS, ZnSe, and ZnTe were composited with Cu 2 MoS 4 to construct the photocatalysts, and we analyzed the four catalysts for the crystal structure, microscopic morphology, photoelectronic properties, and hydrogen evolution performance. Comparing the four different photocatalysts, the composite of ZnSe and Cu 2 MoS 4 has the highest photocatalytic hydrogen evolution efficiency, and the hydrogen evolution rate of the optimal ratio of ZSeC-20 reaches about 2617 μmol/g/h, which is about 46 times higher than that of pure ZnSe. It is attributed to the loading of Cu 2 MoS 4 to build a heterogeneous structure, which reduces the photogenerated electron and hole recombination rate, which enhances the photocatalytic water splitting hydrogen evolution rate.
