Surface reconstruction generates genuine active phases under an electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER); however, most OER catalysts exhibit slow self-reconstruction due to their relative stability in electrochemistry. Therefore, it is highly essential to rationally design precatalysts capable of rapidly generating more active OER species. Herein, a novel reconfigurable Te-doped NiFe layered double hydroxide (Te-NiFe LDH/NF) precatalyst is prepared, which exhibits ultrafast and in-depth self-reconstruction, significantly enhancing the activity for the OER step. By employing various in/ex situ techniques and theoretical calculations, the distinctive structure of Te-NiFe LDH/NF along with the alkaline electrolyte are identified as pivotal factors for facilitating the phase transition. The presence of Te cations can effectively reduce the energy barrier, thereby providing the feasibility of continuous reconstruction, while the alkaline electrolyte supplies a complement of OH– to form highly active oxyhydroxides. Besides, Te is doped in situ into the NiFeOxHy lattice (Te-NiFeOxHy/NF), leading to optimized binding energies of the OER intermediates and reduced energy barriers for the rate-determining step (RDS), ultimately enhancing the OER performance. As such, the self-restructured Te-NiFeOxHy/NF only required 208 and 310 mV to achieve 10 and 500 mA cm–2, respectively, together with high current stability for 300 h. This study provides a rational design strategy to develop highly efficient electrocatalysts for the OER through surface reconstruction.

Despite extensive efforts over four decades, the development of efficient NIR-driven photocatalysts for solar H 2 production remains elusive. Current NIR-activated systems are limited by inferior performance, significant photocorrosion, and reliance on scarce noble metals or toxic dyes. Notably, NIR-activated systems based on non-noble metals that simultaneously exhibit high activity and long-term stability represent a critical gap. In this work, we present a Te-doping-induced band-structure optimization strategy, whereby Te-doped ZnIn 2 S 4 nanoflowers are synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method, enabling a narrow-bandgap semiconductor to achieve efficient NIR-driven (λ > 800 nm) H 2 production without noble-metal co-catalysts through Urbach‑tail absorption. Te atom incorporation not only broadens light absorption and effectively narrows the bandgap through the formation of intermediate gap states, but also induces a redistribution of local charges, which facilitates the separation and transport of charge carriers. As expected, the optimized Te–ZnIn 2 S 4 catalyst delivers a remarkable hydrogen evolution rate of 128 μmol·g ‒1 ·h ‒1 under NIR irradiation (λ > 800 nm), which is 10 times higher than that of its pristine counterpart and outperforms all previously reported non‑noble‑metal NIR‑responsive photocatalysts under the same conditions. Impressively, the optimally Te-doped ZnIn 2 S 4 retains a considerable H 2 evolution rate of 8.57 μmol·g ‒1 ·h ‒1 under extended-wavelength NIR light (λ = 940 nm), demonstrating its exceptional capability to harvest low-energy photons for water splitting. This work highlights that rational band‑structure engineering through element doping can effectively extend the photoresponse of ZnIn 2 S 4 into the deep NIR region via Urbach‑tail absorption, thereby enabling efficient H 2 evolution without the need for noble‑metal co‑catalysts.

The ever-growing antibiotic-resistant bacteria pose a huge threat to public health. Restoring the susceptibility of ineffective antibiotics by inorganic nanomaterials and combining the photothermal and antibiotic effects could be an optional strategy to combat this resistance. Here, cefotaxime (CTX) loaded tellurium nanoparticles (Te NPs) were fabricated to recover the antibacterial activity of the ineffective β-lactam antibiotic CTX against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and at the same time perform photothermal therapy under light-emitting diode (LED) irradiation with a wavelength in the range of 420–480 nm. The combination of 50 μg mL−1 Te–CTX NPs with 5 min LED irradiation produced a 30.4 °C temperature increase and killed 99% of MRSA in vitro. In vivo evaluation in mice revealed that Te–CTX NPs and LED irradiation accelerated the healing of MRSA infected wounds and presented biosafety. Furthermore, this combination accelerated glutathione oxidation and resulted in the disruption of the antioxidant defence system of MRSA. Such a synergistic antibiotic and photothermal therapy provides an innovative way for the treatment of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections.

Electronegative S-filled skutterudite compounds have attracted considerable attention due to scattering of low-frequency phonons (35–50 cm − 1 ), but there are few reports on S-filled double-substituted skutterudite. In this work, a series of S-filled Te-Sn double-substituted skutterudite compounds were synthesized using high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) method. The phase composition, microstructure, and thermoelectric properties of S x Co 4 Sb 1 1 Te 0 . 7 Sn 0 . 3 ( x = 0 , 0.05, 0.10, 0.20) samples were systematically determined. The results show that the introduction of S increases the substitution limit of Te in the Sb site. Under the combined effect of the sample synthesis pressure and S filling, the nucleation density of the sample grains increases and the grain size decreases. At the same time, there are numerous special microstructures in the samples synthesized in a high-pressure environment. Thermoelectric performance studies show that a small amount of S filling optimizes the Seebeck coefficient of the sample and increases the power factor (PF). With an increase of the amount of S introduced, the thermal conductivity of the samples decreases significantly. Therefore, the maximum zT value of an S 0 . 0 5 Co 4 Sb 1 1 Te 0 . 7 Sn 0 . 3 sample synthesized at 2.5 GPa pressure is 0.17 at room temperature. The maximum zT value of the sample is 1.26 at 773 K.

Te(IV) reduction to Te(0) is a detoxification process in bacteria. Elemental Te nanostructures are new materials, however, the functions of them, such as adsorption ability, have not been fully explored. Shinella sp. WSJ-2 is a highly Te(IV)-resistant bacterium with a MIC of 8 mmol/L. It was able to rapidly reduce 0.3 mmol/L Te(IV) to Te nanorods (TeNRs) within 28 h, and its Te(IV) reduction ability was relatively stable after 14 cycles repeatedly. The size of TeNRs ranged from 50 to 120 nm. The surface of TeNRs was mainly enveloped with proteins and lipids. Moreover, the biogenic TeNRs were capable of removing multiple dyes and metals and were effectively recycled with 100 mmol/L NaCl. Adsorption equilibrium isotherms showed that the maximum adsorption amounts were 618.8, 1076.8, 496.3, 179.3, 58.7 and 275.3 mg/g for Methylene Blue , Azure B, Malachite Green, Cd(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II), respectively. In conclusion, this is the first evidence that the genus Shinella is involved in Te(IV) reduction. The strong sorption of cationic dyes and metals onto TeNRs is probably due to the electrostatic interaction. This study showed the potential of Shinella sp. WSJ-2 in the bioremediation of toxic Te(IV) and adsorption removal of multiple dyes and metals by biogenic TeNRs.

Metastable 1T′ MoTe 2 has attracted much attention as a cost-effective electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in recent years. However, few studies were done over common stable 2H phase because it often exhibits inferior performance. Herein, stable 2H MoTe 2 with S-doped Te vacancies has been synthesized by one-step telluride conversion of 1T MoS 2 at 700°C under Ar/H 2 atmosphere. It is demonstrated that the synergistic effect of S-doping and Te vacancies changes the electronic structures of the catalyst. Density functional theory (DFT) studies show that plentiful electrons accumulate on the surface S atoms in S-doped Te vacancies of 2H MoTe 2 catalyst, which may be as active sites to promote HER. Moreover, the as-synthesized catalyst can be directly used as working electrode, and realizes current density of 100 mA cm −2 at overpotential of 217 mV with Tafel slope of 94 mV dec −1 . This work stimulates intensive studies on the activation of inert phase of other nanocatalysts towards various reactions.

Sluggish kinetics and shuttle effects hinder high-energy rechargeable sodium-chalcogen batteries, requiring nanostructured positive electrodes with excess conductive additives. Here, we show that an acidic binder-induced corrosion strategy enables activity in bulk S/Se/Te positive electrodes. Carboxylic acid-rich binders create an acidic microenvironment (pH≈3) during processing, triggering spontaneous formation of copper chalcogenide interlayers on Cu current collectors. These interlayers reconstruct into active Cu 2 X (X = S/Se/Te) catalysts during cycling. Using Na-Se batteries, experimental and DFT analyses confirm Cu 2 Se reduces the liquid-solid conversion barrier by ~24.1% and accelerates polyselenides conversion. Polar groups in the binders enhance chemisorption, reducing the shuttling effect. Consequently, bulk Se with alginic acid binder achieves 96% theoretical utilization at 0.1 A g ‒1 , rate capability of 508 mAh g ‒1 at 20 A g ‒1 , stable cyclability at 5 A g ‒1 over 16,000 cycles, and low-temperature operation at 0.1 A g ‒1 (94% capacity retention at −20 °C). The strategy of transforming binders into active interface modulators provides a generalizable approach for other chalcogens, enabling practical and host-free rechargeable metal batteries with chalcogen positive electrodes.

CdTe thin-film solar cells, as a core component of photovoltaic devices, have been commercially deployed for over 30 years with global installations surpassing 30 GWp. Decommissioning has surged since 2010, showing major material recovery potential from retired modules. However, CdTe thin-film solar cells feature ultra-precise architectures with micron-sized CdTe/CdS/SnO 2 functional layers deposited on glass substrates. This structural complexity and ultralow metal concentrations create significant technical barriers for metal recovery. Current recycling technologies in both literature and practice exhibit insufficient constituent recovery and secondary waste generation, necessitating advanced separation technologies. This study developed an innovative recycling process achieving multi-component recovery: intact glass substrates, high-purity Te powder (99.9 wt%), CdS precipitates (99.0 wt%), and sodium thiostannate (Na 2 SnS 3 ) solutions. There were four steps: (1) Decommissioned modules were heated in air at 300 °C for 1 h to degrade EVA and recover intact back glass; (2) Front glass with functional layers further reacted with NaHS at 400 °C, converting CdTe/CdS/SnO₂ into Te/CdS/SnS₂ powder and recovering clean front glass; (3) Mixed powder was processed at 500 °C for 2 h (<10 Pa), yielding >99.9 wt% Te with 98.31 % ± 2.11 % recovery; (4) Na₂S leaching (140 g/L, L/S = 10:1, 40 °C, 2 h) yielded 99.0 wt% CdS precipitate and Na₂SnS₃ solution with >99 % metal recovery. Material balance analysis and life cycle assessment demonstrated that the proposed technology exhibits superior cost-effectiveness and minimized environmental footprint, while maintaining industrial scalability.

In order to enhance the energy efficiency of water electrolysis, it is imperative to devise electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction that are both non-precious metal-based and highly efficient. Efficient catalyst design is generally based on electronic structural engineering. Considering the electronegativity disparity between selenium (Se) and tellurium (Te), the tunable bandgaps, and the conductive metallic nature of Te . We designed a material wherein Te atoms are uniformly doped onto the surface of Cobalt tetra selenide (Co 3 Se 4 ) nanorods, leading to the synthesis of a defect-rich material. Experimental results demonstrate that Te doping in Co 3 Se 4 increases active sites and optimizes the electronic structure of Co cations, enhancing the design of multi-defect structures. This promotes the generation of the Co(oxy) hydroxide (CoOOH) active phase, enhancing catalytic activity by maximizing the binding strength between Co sites and oxygenated intermediates. Te-Co 3 Se 4 nanorods exhibit good catalytic activity for oxygen evolution reactions, with an overpotential of 269 mV at a driving current density of 50 mA cm −2 and excellent stability in alkaline media (over 100 h). This discovery indicates the feasibility of strategically combining various imperfect structures, thereby unlocking the latent potential of diverse catalysts in electrocatalytic reactions.

Catalyst passivation by metal hydroxide precipitation (e.g., Mg(OH) 2 ) severely hinders the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in seawater-based metal-air batteries. Herein, we propose an interfacial hydration layer engineering strategy and materialize it by constructing partially oxidized tellurium atomic clusters anchored on defective carbon nanofibers (PO-Te@CNF). This catalyst demonstrates superior ORR activity in natural seawater, with a high half-wave potential and large limiting current density surpassing Pt/C and most reported analogues, alongside remarkable long-term stability. The stability is attributed to a shift in Mg(OH) 2 nucleation from heterogeneous on the electrode to homogeneous in the electrolyte, which is driven by the reinforced hydration layer that raises the energy barrier for Mg 2 + penetration. Mechanistic studies reveal that the synergistic sites, comprising carbon defects and PO-Te clusters, concurrently optimize the local electronic structure to lower the ORR energy barrier and restructure the interfacial water network to inhibit cation intrusion. This work establishes a design principle for durable electrocatalysts in seawater-based energy technologies.

Low-dimensional lead-based perovskite materials have recently attracted extensive attentions for their diverse structures, unique optoelectronic properties and enhanced stability. However, the toxicity of lead, low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and complex preparation processes limit their practical applications. Herein, we present a simple room-temperature synthesis of orange-emitting lead-free perovskite derivative (NH 4 ) 2 SnCl 6 :Te phosphors with a large quantity at one time. By introducing Te 4+ ions with 5s 2 active lone pairs, (NH 4 ) 2 SnCl 6 :Te exhibits broadband emission peaked at 590 nm, a large full width at half maximum (FWHM) about 127 nm and a maximum PLQY up to 83.51%. Density functional theory calculations combined with comprehensive spectroscopic data reveal that the incorporated Te 4+ ions change the band structure and trigger the formation of Jahn-Teller-like self-trapped excitons (STEs) in [TeCl 6 ] 2− centers. In addition, (NH 4 ) 2 SnCl 6 :Te shows excellent ambient and thermal stabilities. Using (NH 4 ) 2 SnCl 6 :0.5%Te as an orange down-conversion material, highly stable wLEDs with a Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage (CIE) of (0.39, 0.38), correlated color temperature (CCT) of 3855 K, and color rendering index (CRI) of 83 are demonstrated. We expect these results to facilitate the development of low-cost, environmentally friendly and high-performance novel phosphors for future lighting and display technologies.

In this work, Te/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS)/Cu7Te4 ternary thermoelectric (TE) nanocomposite films were successfully fabricated by physical mixing and then drop casting. An optimum power factor of 65.3 μW/mK2 was acquired from a composite film containing 95 wt % PEDOT:PSS-coated Te (PC/Te) nanorods at 300 K, which was about 5 times as large as that of the PC/Cu7Te4 nanorod film and about 3 times as large as that of the PC/Te nanorod film. The power factor reached 112.3 μW/mK2 when the temperature was 380 K. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and high-resolution STEM were used to observe the detailed internal microstructure of the composite film, revealing that the Te nanorods were single crystalline and the Cu7Te4 rods polycrystalline. The composite film was in fact a three-dimensional network interconnected with the PC/Te and PC/Cu7Te4 nanorods. The enhancement of the TE properties was ascribed to the synergetic effect of the two kinds of nanorods and the double-carrier filtering effect at the two heterointerfaces of Te/PEDOT:PSS and Cu7Te4/PEDOT:PSS. An eight single-leg flexible TE device consisting of the optimized composite film was fabricated, which produced a voltage of 31.2 mV and a maximum output power of 94.7 nW at a temperature gradient of 39 K.
