A novel sensor based on Ti3C2 MXene/Co3O4/carbon nanofibers composite for the sensitive detection of 4-aminophenol

Hao Cheng,Liwen Zhang,Jun Feng,Tingfan Tang,Danfeng Qin

A novel, sensitive Ti 3 C 2 MXene/Co 3 O 4 /carbon nanofibers (Ti 3 C 2 MXene/Co 3 O 4 /CNFs) composite was synthesized via a HF exfoliating Ti 3 AlC 2 strategy, followed by doping Co 3 O 4 and Ti 3 C 2 MXene into the CNFs via a combination electrospinning and thermal annealing process. Ti 3 C 2 MXene/Co 3 O 4 /CNFs composite exhibits higher catalytic effect, conductivity, chemical stability, and electrochemical performance than Co 3 O 4 and Ti 3 C 2 MXene in electrochemical impedance, differential pulse stripping voltammetry, chronocoulometry, and cyclic voltammetry tests. This Ti 3 C 2 MXene/Co 3 O 4 /CNFs hybrid modified electrode provides fast analysis of 4-aminophenol (4-AP) with ultrahigh sensitivity, enhanced reproducibility and strong anti-interference capability. Furthermore, the level of 4-AP was quantified by this electrode with a wide linear range from 0.5 to 150 μM (R 2  > 0.99) and a low detection limit about 0.018 μM was achieved. Finally, the fabricated electrode was used for fast and sensitive analysis of 4-AP spiked in tap water and blood serum samples. This work presents the new Ti 3 C 2 MXene/Co 3 O 4 /CNFs electrode provides a platform for 4-AP monitoring and has the advantages of high selectivity , accuracy, simplicity, and rapid analysis.

Rapid electron transfer via hetero-interface engineering of 2D MOF anchored Ti3C2 MXene nanosheet for enhanced photocatalytic disinfection

Jianfang Li,Zhenxing Yang,Chaofeng Wang,Shuilin Wu,Yufeng Zheng,Zhenduo Cui,Hui Jiang,Zhaoyang Li,Shengli Zhu,Liheng Feng,Xiangmei Liu

Photocatalytic materials are one of the most promising alternatives of antibiotics for wound disinfection, and the bacteria-killing efficacy is restrained by photocatalytic performance. Herein, Ti 3 C 2 MXene-anchored 2D metal-organic frame (MOF) nanosheets were constructed to enhance the photocatalytic performance through interface engineering strategy by in-situ growth of 2D MOF on Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets. On the one hand, the close contact between them decreased the bandgap of 2D MOF, improving the yield of photogenerated electrons. On the other hand, it not only provided a rapid electron transfer channel across the interface but also induced the formation of Schottky junction at the interface. Consequently, the separation efficiency of photo-generated electron-hole pairs was significantly enhanced by rapid transfer and inhibition of electron backflow. Thus, under 660 nm plus 808 nm light, MOF/Ti 3 C 2 killed 99.73 ± 0.12% of Staphylococcus aureus . This work will provide insights for designing photo-responsive materials through in-situ interfacial engineering strategies.

Enabling efficient electrocatalytic conversion of N2 to NH3 by Ti3C2 MXene loaded with semi-metallic 1T′-MoS2 nanosheets

Xiaoyue Chen,Songge Zhang,Xiu Qian,Zhangqian Liang,Yanjun Xue,Xiaoli Zhang,Jian Tian,Ye Han,Minhua Shao

Herein, we assemble semi-metallic 1T′ phase MoS 2 on the surface Ti 3 C 2 MXene (1T′-MoS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 composite) by one-step hydrothermal method for nitrogen fixation. 1T′-MoS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 composites present a high ammonia yield rate of 31.96 µg h −1 mg −1 cat. at − 0.95 V vs. RHE and a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 30.75% at − 0.7 V, which is much better than pure 1T′-MoS 2 and pure Ti 3 C 2 MXenes alone. Furthermore, the 1T′-MoS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 composites exhibit good selectivity and stability with no significant decrease in ammonia yield rate and FE. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that 1T′-MoS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 composite makes the activation and further reduction of *N 2 more thermodynamically favorable than pure 1T′-MoS 2 . 1 5 N isotopic labeling experiment confirms that nitrogen in produced ammonia originates from N 2 in the electrolyte.

Ti3C2 MXene-Reduced Graphene Oxide Composite Polymer-Based Printable Electrolyte for Quasi-Solid-State Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Jinyue Wen,Zhicheng Sun,Yun Qiao,Yang Zhou,Yibin Liu,Qingqing Zhang,Yuanyuan Liu,Shouzheng Jiao

The liquid electrolyte causes the corresponding leakage and sealing problems in the construction of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Currently, quasi-solid-state polymer-based electrolytes have been reported to effectively improve the leakage and volatilization of traditional liquid electrolytes in DSSCs. In this work, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and the intercalation of MXene/rGO were utilized in the copolymer polyethylene oxide/poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) as a printable gel electrolyte for the preparation of quasi-solid-state DSSCs (QS-DSSCs). The effects of different contents of rGO and different ratios of MXene/rGO intercalation on the photoelectric performance of DSSCs were well studied. When the rGO content was 0.5 wt %, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of DSSC was about 7.781%. Specifically, when the ratio of MXene/rGO was 2/1, the photovoltaic performance of DSSCs was greatly enhanced. The corresponding short current density (Jsc), open-circuit voltage (Voc), fill factor, and PCE were obtained to be 15.170 mA/cm2, 0.783 V, 0.695, and 8.255%, respectively. With the intercalation structure between MXene and rGO, the conductivity of electrolytes seemed to be improved through the possible shortening of transmission and diffusion distance of electrolyte ions. The printable electrolyte could achieve an energy conversion efficiency of 29.94% under 1000 lux illumination. A long-term stability (>95%) of QS-DSSCs was also achieved with the composite of MXene/rGO over 1000 h. Finally, this ready screen-printing technology with the electrolyte of the MXene/rGO composite in the copolymer would have great potential for the large-scale manufacture of flexible DSSCs in the future.

Rationally designed Ti3C2 MXene/CaIn2S4 Schottky heterojunction for enhanced photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction: Performance, influence factors and mechanism

Chao Liu,Wen Xiao,Xingyu Liu,Qiang Wang,Jiawei Hu,Siyuan Zhang,Jianguang Xu,Qinfang Zhang,Zhigang Zou

As a highly toxic heavy metal, Cr(VI) reduction by developing high-efficiency photocatalysts is of great significance. Herein, we firstly design few-layer Ti 3 C 2 MXene (FTM) by the hand-operated shaking, showing dual advantages of structural stability and more exposed reactive sites. Then, a refluxed process is performed to fabricate FTM/CaIn 2 S 4 (FTC) composites, where 2D CaIn 2 S 4 (CIS) nanoplates are closely connected with 2D FTM to form Schottky junction. The optimal 1-FTC with the FTM/CIS mass ratio of 1 wt.% exhibits the highest activity toward photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction under visible light. It is well elucidated that the broadened light absorption range and promoted charge carrier separation rate induced by the introduction of FTM are responsible for improving photocatalytic activity of CIS. During Cr(VI) photoreduction, 1-FTC possesses excellent photo-stability and reusability. The effects of catalyst mass, coexisting ions, water sources and pH values on the Cr(VI) photoreduction efficiency are investigated. Photogenerated • O 2 − and e − are the main radical species accounting for Cr(VI) photoreduction over 1-FTC. The photocatalytic mechanism along with Cr(VI) removal pathway is exploited. This work may provide some insights into constructing FTM-based Schottky junctions for the efficient water purification.

2D/2D Ti3C2 MXene/HTiNbO5 nanosheets Schottky heterojunction for boosting photothermal-assisted solar-driven photodegradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

Wen Xiao,Huan Yu,Chenghao Xu,Zhongyi Pu,Xiangyu Cheng,Fang Yu,Chao Liu,Qinfang Zhang,Zhigang Zou

Developing high-efficiency photocatalysts for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) degradation is of great significance to ecosystems and human beings. In this work, a two-step process of exfoliation and re-stacking was performed to prepare re-stacked HTiNbO 5 nanosheets (R-HTNS) and then coupled with Ti 3 C 2 MXene to construct Ti 3 C 2 MXene/R-HTNS (MX/RTS) with a 2D/2D Schottky heterojunction. These 2D/2D heterostructures between Ti 3 C 2 MXene and R-HTNS can produce an internal electric field and provide maximum interface area for efficient charge transfer across the intimate interface. The photocatalytic performance of samples was evaluated by TCH degradation under simulated sunlight. The MX/RTS composites, with an optimal sample of 3-MX/RTS, show enhanced photocatalytic activity for TCH degradation compared with R-HTNS. The characterization results reveal that the introduction of Ti 3 C 2 MXene can significantly increase specific surface area for providing more reactive sites and broaden the light absorption region. Besides, the incident light energy is absorbed by the Ti 3 C 2 MXene component in MX/RTS composites to generate photothermal energy (heat), which facilitates the charge carrier separation and surface reaction kinetics. Thus, the enhanced TCH photodegradation activity for MX/RTS composites is due to the introduction of Ti 3 C 2 MXene, which possesses the synergistic effect of the increased specific surface area, improved light-harvesting capacity, 2D/2D Schottky heterojunction, and photothermal energy effect. Additionally, the TCH photodegradation behavior is deliberated with a detailed discussion on various coexisting ions. During TCH photodegradation, the active radical species are determined for 3-MX/RTS. According to the characterization results, the possible TCH photodegradation pathway and mechanism over 3-MX/RTS are explored. This work may offer a novel insight for constructing MXene-based heterostructured photocatalysts with high efficiency.

2D amorphous-MoO3−x@Ti3C2-MXene non-van der Waals heterostructures as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries

Pengfei Yan,Liang Ji,Xiaopeng Liu,Qinghua Guan,Junling Guo,Yonglong Shen,Haijun Zhang,Weifeng Wei,Xinwei Cui,Qun Xu

2D heterostructures offer a great opportunity in seeking high-performing energy storage materials ; however, performance ceiling exists, limited by their van-der-Waals (vdW) interactions. Here, we explore a novel 2D, amorphous MoO 3−x (aMoO 3−x ) on Ti 3 C 2 -MXene, non-vdW heterostructure via a facile synthesis route. Density functional theory computations suggest that the non-vdW heterostructure can strongly stabilize aMoO 3−x while maintaining electrical conductivity at a high level. Facile 2D Li-ion diffusion can then be achieved in the restacked 2D non-vdW heterostructures due to the weakened interactions between two defective MoO 3−x layers, leading to a capacitor-like interlayer diffusion reaching a large capacity of 426 C g −1 on the surface of the amorphous layer and a diffusion-controlled intralayer diffusion of 546 C g −1 within the amorphous layer. These characteristics optimize Li-ion storage kinetics while achieving full capacities of amorphous materials with high stability. This work might offer a feasible platform of 2D non-vdW heterostructures for boosting and understanding Li-ion storage performance.

Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid by Ti3C2 MXene-derived heterojunction photocatalyst: Application of intercalation strategy in DESs

Haoran Song,Yuwei Wang,Zheng Ling,Daoyuan Zu,Zhuo Li,Yongming Shen,Changping Li

In-situ construction of heterojunction photocatalyst on two-dimensional (2D) Ti 3 C 2 MXene substrate has been proved to be a feasible method to enhance the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. However, the limited interlayer spacing of 2D Ti 3 C 2 hinders the in-situ growth of TiO 2 photocatalyst. Herein, the intercalation strategy was developed in deep eutectic solvents (DESs) method to achieve interlayer expansion of Ti 3 C 2 and improve Ti 3 C 2 -derived photocatalyst performance. Because of the intercalation of choline cations, the DESs method synthesized Ti 3 C 2 (Ti 3 C 2 -DES) had the larger c -lattice parameter than that of traditional HF method synthesized Ti 3 C 2 (Ti 3 C 2 -HF). The interlayer space of Ti 3 C 2 -DES could be intercalated with more water molecule for oxidization of the Ti atoms, which remarkably promoted the in-situ growth of TiO 2 crystals. The formed heterojunction between (001) and (101) facets enhanced carriers separation. The Ti 3 C 2 substrate with excellent conductivity further promoted carriers transfer. As a result, Ti 3 C 2 /TiO 2 photocatalyst exhibited superior perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) removal performance (almost 100% removal efficiency and 49% defluorination efficiency within 16 h) compared with the traditional Ti 3 C 2 -HF/TiO 2 (22% removal efficiency and 12% defluorination efficiency within 16 h). This study provides a feasible strategy for enhancing photocatalytic degradation of PFOA by Ti 3 C 2 MXene-derived heterojunction photocatalyst.

Ti3C2 MXene anchors CuAu-LDH multifunctional two-dimensional nanomaterials for dual-mode detection of CEA in electrochemical immunosensors

Mengmeng Zhang,Lisha Mei,Li Zhang,Xiao Wang,Xiaochen Liao,Xiuwen Qiao,Chenglin Hong

Electrochemical immunoassays are commonly used to detect biomarkers and Ti 3 C 2 MXene anchored CuAu-LDH two-dimensional hydroxide heterojunctions for dual-mode electrochemical immunosensors were fabricated in this work. Layered double hydroxides have a large surface area, high chemical stability, tunable metal composition and interchangeable anions, however, the insulating nature of LDH further limits its catalytic performance. For this reason, Ti 3 C 2 Mxenes were introduced to improve this problem. 2D layers of Ti 3 C 2 Mxenes with large specific surface area and excellent conductivity have been well proven and widely used. And the surface of Ti 3 C 2 Mxenes (due to the presence of abundant surface functional groups), will facilitate the anchoring of metal ions and the nucleation of LDH. In addition, its excellent electrical conductivity will facilitate the electron transfer between Cu 2+ and Cu + . The immunosensor not only showed a heavy square wave voltammetry (SWV) signal. It also exhibited high electrocatalytic activity for H 2 O 2 redox reactions and improves the sensitivity of the Ampere Current (i-t) detection. The CEA immunosensor developed in this study showed a wide linear response (0.0001–80 ng/mL) and the lowest detection limits (SWV: 33.6 fg/mL and i-t: 45.4 fg/mL S/N = 3). The results confirmed the excellent analytical capability of the immunosensor.

Built-in electric field induced CeO2/Ti3C2-MXene Schottky-junction for coupled photocatalytic tetracycline degradation and CO2 reduction

Jiyou Shen,Jun Shen,Wenjing Zhang,Xiaohui Yu,Hua Tang,Mingyi Zhang,Zulfiqar,Qinqin Liu

Ti 3 C 2 -MXene, which exhibits excellent electronic conductivity and optical properties , has been identified as a promising noble-metal-free co-catalyst for the development of efficient photocatalysts for environmental remediation. Herein, CeO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 -MXene hybrids were prepared by the in-situ growth of cube-like CeO 2 using ultrathin Ti 3 C 2 -MXene nanosheets as a two-dimensional platform via a simple hydrothermal route. Upon exposure to solar light, the CeO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 -MXene hybrid with the optimal ratio of Ti 3 C 2 -MXene exhibited enhanced performance in photocatalytic tetracycline degradation and CO 2 reduction, with activities 6.3 and 1.5 times greater than those of pristine CeO 2 , respectively. The improved activity of CeO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 -MXene was attributed to the Schottky junction induced by the built-in electric field between CeO 2 and Ti 3 C 2 -MXene, which drives the photogenerated electrons from CeO 2 to Ti 3 C 2 -MXene and expedites the segregation of the electrons and holes. This work may shed light on the careful design of novel Schottky junctions utilizing noble-metal free Ti 3 C 2 -MXene as co-catalysts for building efficient photocatalytic systems enacted in pollutant degradation and energy conversion.

N,S-doped Ti3C2 MXene quantum dots-anchored metal ruthenium: Efficient electrocatalyst for pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction

Lan Ding,Jing Xu,Zeyu Zhang,Kezhen Qi,Ge Jin

Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) via water splitting is a prospective technology for achieving the sustainable production of hydrogen. So, ruthenium-based electrocatalysts have been extensively studied. However, metallic ruthenium tends to agglomerate due to the high cohesive energy, resulting in decreased HER performance in practical usage. Introducing sufficient support for dispersing and immobilizing ruthenium-based species is a viable way to enhance the utilization efficiency. MXene-based materials with unique surface termination groups, superior chemical stability, high specific surface area and favorable electrical conductivity have received significant attention as low-cost carriers for the development of active catalysts in HER. Herein, nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) atom-doped titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 ) quantum dots (QDs) were successfully synthesized as efficient carriers for anchoring ultra-small ruthenium nanoparticles (NPs) toward electrocatalytic HER. Electrochemical tests reveal that the resultant N,S-Ti 3 C 2 QDs/Ru displays superior HER performance with low overpotentials of 28, 25 and 56 mV at 10 mA cm −2 current density in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , 1 M KOH and 1 M PBS solutions, respectively. Such a low overpotential is comparable to most previously reported non-metallic catalysts, Ru-based electrocatalysts and commercial Pt/C. In addition, N,S-Ti 3 C 2 QDs/Ru displays extraordinarily long-term stability over a relatively wide pH range and is indeed a kind of pH-universal catalyst for hydrogen evolution. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the interactions between metal Ru and N,S-Ti 3 C 2 MXene QDs effectively regulate the electronic structure of the active site Ru, lowering the energy barrier of the electrocatalytic HER intermediate, thus dramatically enhancing the activity for N,S-Ti 3 C 2 QDs/Ru. This work proposes a novel approach to functionalize MXene quantum dots for use as low-cost electrocatalysts with promising practical applications in renewable energy conversion.

Stability of Ti3C2-MXene/Waterborne polyurethane composite emulsion and investigation of visible light-driven film self-healing performance

Shuai Qi,Sai Gong,Chang Liu,Shenzhen Li,Bo Li,Shiwei Xie,Xiao Zhang

Intrinsic self-healing waterborne polyurethane (WPU) is an environmentally friendly, economically viable, and practical novel intelligent material. However, the key to achieving practical applications lies in the remote activation of repair in self-healing materials and the excellent mechanical properties of the matrix. In this study, we introduce quadruple hydrogen bonding in the polyurethane backbone. We have incorporated a novel two-dimensional sheet-like material, MXene, to achieve visible light remote-driven self-healing of material hydrogen bonds while enhancing the material’s mechanical properties. By utilizing the MXene supernatant, this approach not only resolves the issues of poor stability and easy sedimentation of MXene nanosheets in water-based polymers but also helps to prevent resource wastage. Our research results demonstrate that the composite film exhibits a tensile strength of 6.55 MPa and a fracture elongation of 604%. Additionally, quadruple hydrogen bonds in the WPU chains enable rapid self-healing of microcracks under visible light irradiation at 300 mW/cm2, with complete disappearance within 80 min.
