Exploring efficient photocatalysts for degrading hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is gaining increasing popularity. Herein, we developed Co-doped WO 3 nanofibrous photocatalysts by incorporating Co dopant into the WO 3 lattice, where hexavalent W(VI) is replaced with divalent Co(II). This heterovalent substitution causes significant charge rearrangement around the Co dopant, resulting in a localized electric field (LEF) that enhances oxygen adsorption and activation. Such an electric field drives photoexcited electrons to gather at the Co dopant, thereby achieving spatial charge separation. Both the efficient oxygen activation and LEF forming contribute to the production of superoxide radicals. The Co0.8-WO 3 nanofibers demonstrated improved photocatalytic oxidation of gaseous HCHO and CH 3 COCH 3 compared to WO 3 . This study highlights the significant promotion of dopant-induced oxygen adsorption and LEF-induced efficient carrier separation. These findings offer a new direction for developing more efficient photocatalysts using unique doping approaches.

CH 3 Br catalytic oxidation as the probe reaction was investigated over Ru supported on TiO 2 with different crystalline phases. 1% Ru/anatase TiO 2 (a-TiO 2 ) exhibited superior stability at 240 °C after a 180 h time-on-stream run. And there was an induced activation for 1% Ru/a-TiO 2 during the initial 60 h reaction. Then the activity sustained stable. To elucidate the intrinsic mechanism, a series of characterizations were performed such as XRD, CO-Pulse, H 2 -TPR, XPS and NH 3 -TPD etc. Results showed that the Ru particle size increased and the Ru 0 content decreased as the reaction proceeded, which were not conductive to the reaction. It was assumed that the catalytic activity was strongly dependent on other factors. In combination with NH 3 -TPD and Py-FTIR measurements, it was confirmed that the enhanced activity and stability was strongly associated with the surface acidity, especially moderate strong Lewis acid (L acid). The increase of the acid amount and acidity strength was led by the generation and adsorption of HBr, Br 2 and RuO x Br y during the reaction, among which HBr and Br 2 was easier to desorb at 250 °C. While moderate strong L acid was sourced from the formation of RuO x Br y . The addition of transition metal (Ce, Co, Mn, Nb and Ni) further validated that the moderate strong L acid played a decisive role in the CH 3 Br catalytic oxidation.

As primary precursors of particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and soot have emerged as major contributors to air pollution in recent decades. It is urgent and significant to develop high-performance catalysts for the catalytic oxidation of VOCs and soot. In this work, we report a feasible approach for the preparation of Ag-supported CeO 2 catalysts (Ag/CeO 2 -HP) via the combination of impregnation and plasma treatment, and evaluate their performance in catalytic oxidation. Comprehensive characterization results demonstrate that the non-thermal plasma treatment can effectively enhance the dispersion of Ag nanoparticles and enrich the concentration of surface oxygen vacancies in the catalyst. Furthermore, Ag/CeO 2 -HP possesses the highest concentration of the highly surface active oxygen species. Thus, Ag/CeO 2 -HP exhibits the highest catalytic activity for catalytic oxidation of VOCs and soot among all the catalysts prepared. The T max value for soot over Ag/CeO 2 -HP is 383 °C, compared to 409 °C over Ag/CeO 2 prepared by the conventional equivalent-volume impregnation method. Under demanding reaction conditions (1000 ppm hexane, GHSV 75,000 h −1 ), the T 98 values for n-hexane over the Ag/CeO 2 -HP and Ag/CeO 2 catalysts are 295 and 339 °C, respectively. The work provides an efficient strategy to prepare supported catalysts with enhanced catalytic activity.

The emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) poses severe environmental and health risks. Constructing stable atomically-dispersed catalysts for low-temperature VOC oxidation remains challenging. Herein, we report a directional photodeposition strategy to anchor atomically dispersed Pd onto an attapulgite (ATP) nanomineral supported CeO 2 composite, where the ATP facilitates the formation of abundant lattice oxygen vacancies in CeO 2 . Under light irradiation, surface oxygen vacancies migrate and interact with Pd species, enabling selective coordination and reductive deposition. The 0.1%Pd/CeO₂/ATP catalyst achieves 99% toluene conversion at 205 °C (T₉₉ = 205 °C) at a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 20,000 mL·g −1 ·h −1 . In situ experiments and DFT calculation reveal that atomically dispersed Pd atoms form stable Pd–O–Ce bonds with oxygen vacancies sites on the CeO 2 surface, effectively modulating the electronic structure of the active sites . These atomically dispersed Pd catalysts significantly enhance oxygen activation capability and the oxidation efficiency of reaction intermediates through the unique Pd–O–Ce coordination structure. This work provides valuable insights into vacancy-mediated atomic-scale engineering as a strategy for designing efficient environmental catalysis.

Emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) air pollutants could worsen air quality and adversely affect human health, thus developing more efficient low-temperature VOCs removal techniques is desired. A novel continuous system integrating UV-assisted photo-electrochemical catalysis with microbial fuel cell (UV-assisted PEC-MFC) has been established for promoting removal of gaseous ethyl acetate or toluene and generating electricity simultaneously. In this system, CeO 2 /TiO 2 /ACF catalytic cathode is prepared and used for combination with bio-anode for accelerating cathodic reaction . This UV-assisted PEC-MFC system exhibits an excellent elimination capacity (EC) of ethyl acetate (∼0.39 g/m 3 , EC: ∼2.52 g/m 3 /h) or toluene (∼0.29 g/m 3 , EC: 1.89 g/m 3 /h) under close-circuit condition. Furthermore, an outstanding elimination capacity (EC: 28.04 g/m 3 /h) for high concentration toluene (∼4.10 g/m 3 ) removal is obtained after toluene gas passes sequentially through the catalytic cathode then the bio-anode. This way of PEC degradation and biodegradation, avoids inhibition of exoelectrogens activity from toxicity of high concentration toluene. Simultaneously, the cell voltage of UV-assisted PEC-MFC system is stable at 0.11 V (vs. SCE) and 1.452×10 −4 kWh is generated from treatment of toluene gas stream in 6 h duration time. The possible mechanism of VOCs removal in this novel system has been proposed and discussed. This study provides new technical basis for treating gaseous pollutants via integrating photo-electrochemical catalysis with electricity generating microbial fuel cell for energy conversion.

With the development of industry, large quantities of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) not only cause damage to the ecological environment, but also pose a serious threat to human health. At present, most photocatalysts used for benzene treatment still suffer from problems such as narrow light absorption range, high electron-hole recombination rate, and low charge transfer efficiency. Therefore, the development of high-performance photocatalysts is extremely urgent. The introduction of oxygen vacancies and the construction of heterojunctions can effectively solve the above problems. In this study, a defect-rich photocatalyst was combined with a topology-structured metal-organic framework (MOF) to construct a tightly coupled heterojunction, aiming to address these issues and improve the photocatalytic degradation performance of benzene. By introducing oxygen vacancy-rich TiO₂ nanosheets into NH₂-MIL-125, a tightly coupled Z-scheme heterojunction composite photocatalyst is fabricated. The benzene degradation efficiency of the composite reaches up to 98.5%, which is 1.47 times and 1.27 times that of pure NH₂-MIL-125 and oxygen vacancy-rich TiO₂, respectively, while also exhibiting remarkable stability and high adsorption capacity. Oxygen vacancies act as active sites that strengthen the interfacial electronic interaction of the composite, thereby optimizing the electron transport pathway of the heterojunction and improving the carrier separation efficiency. Under the dual modulation of the heterojunction and oxygen vacancies, the built-in electric field is further intensified, leading to a significant enhancement in the adsorption and catalytic performance of the composite. This study provides an effective design strategy for utilizing oxygen vacancy-driven heterojunctions in catalysts for the efficient abatement of VOCs.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) based photocatalysts have been extensively explored, yet their practical application is hindered by limited light absorption and inefficient light-matter interactions. Herein, a robust TiO2-supported carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and CuAg bimetallic nanoparticles (CQDs/CuAg/TiO2) ternary composite catalyst is developed for photothermal catalytic VOCs degradation. The low-dimensional CQDs modulate the micro-environment at the CuAg-TiO2 interface, induce electronic redistribution, and amplify the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of CuAg nanoparticles through geometric and electronic synergies. Such micro-environmental modulation optimizes the spectral absorption range, enhances carrier generation/separation efficiency, and promotes hot-electron-mediated VOCs activation ability and photothermal synergy of CQDs/CuAg/TiO2. The ternary design not only reduces noble metal dependency but also achieves remarkable photothermal synergy. Under simulated three times solar irradiation, Under simulated three times solar irradiation, CQDs/CuAg/TiO2 exhibits 4.0 and 1.6 times photothermal toluene mineralization activity higher than TiO2 and CuAg/TiO2, respectively. This work provides a cost-effective and scalable approach to designing high-performance photothermal catalysts for VOCs degradation and advancing solar-driven environmental remediation technologies.

Solar interfacial evaporation technology, as an emerging sustainable water purification strategy, provides both an economical and environmentally friendly way to solve water resource problems. However, it still faces certain limitations and challenges in treating polluted wastewater containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this paper, MXene-TiO 2 -Ag composites were embedded into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel system using kapok fibres as biomass templates, and a bifunctional and environmentally friendly solar evaporation system (MTAH) was successfully constructed for both efficient solar freshwater production and phenol removal (typical VOC). The MTAH evaporator demonstrated excellent evaporation performance with an evaporation rate as high as 3.09 kg m −2 h −1 and a photothermal conversion efficiency as high as 93.16 % under 1 solar light intensity. The self-growth property of TiO 2 on the MXene surface endowed the evaporator with the ability of photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. In addition, the incorporation of trace Ag nanoparticles played positive roles, which not only significantly enhanced the photothermal conversion performance of MXene, but also broadened the light response range of TiO 2 and effectively suppressed the complexation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The MTAH evaporator shows an excellent removal rate of 91.84 % for high VOC concentrations (100 ppm phenol), effectively avoiding secondary contamination of the condensate. The finding paved the course for the sustainable and eco-friendly solution for freshwater scarcity.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are one of the main pollutants produced in industrial processes. Catalytic oxidation is an effective method to eliminate VOCs, and the key lies in designing efficient metal catalyst. In this work, Pd-Pt/SiO 2 bimetallic catalysts were designed and prepared by the immobilization method, and their performances for toluene oxidation were evaluated. The addition of Pt into the catalyst elevated markedly the reduction of Pd active sites, leading to abundant electron-deficient Pd 0 and electron-rich Pt 0 in the Pd 2 Pt 1 catalyst, which were confirmed by TEM, CO pulse adsorption and in-situ XPS. As revealed by O 2 -TPD and toluene-TPD characterization, the cooperative effect of electron-deficient Pd 0 and electron-rich Pt 0 in Pd 2 Pt 1 catalyst facilitated the activation of O 2 and toluene, thus enhanced greatly its activity. A conversion of 90% (T 90 ) for toluene was achieved over Pd 2 Pt 1 catalyst at 165 ℃, and the apparent activation energy ( E a ) over Pd 2 Pt 1 catalyst was lower than that over other Pd-Pt bimetallic and monometallic Pd or Pt catalysts. Additionally, the reaction mechanism was studied by In - situ DRIFTS, the results showed that the toluene oxidation passed successively benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, benzoic acid and maleic anhydride , then maleic anhydride was further oxidized to CO 2 and water.

Developing high-performance multifunctional catalyst that adept at both sensitive detecting and efficient degrading of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is of significant importance for human and eco safety. This work presented a bifunctional nonmetal composite membrane by functionalizing transparent cellulose membrane with double responsive bromocresol green and catalytic g-C 3 N 4 /COF TAPB-PDA (CNC) heterojunctions for simultaneous detection and degradation of amine VOCs. Bromocresol green possesses both intrinsic visualized acid-base responsiveness and wide light adsorption range. Hierarchical CNC with high specific surface area (up to 1256.60 m 2 g −1 ) can effectively promote the absorption and diffusion of substrates and the separation of photo-generated carriers. A flexible macroporous transparent cellulose membrane was applied as carrier to alleviate the “self-masking effect” of the catalyst inside to improve light utilization. As a result, the composite membrane showing a visually reversible color change from yellow to blue for amine VOCs and achieving rapid quantitative detection of representative triethylamine (detection time of 5 s with a LOD of 0.32 ppm) on the aid of a smart phone. The degradation and mineralization efficiency of triethylamine reached 97.3 % and 73.5 % within 180 min, respectively. The ingenious design of integrating bifunctional cellulose composite material provides feasibility for the rapid identification and efficient removal of VOCs.

Utilizing electronic noses (e-noses) with pattern recognition algorithms offers a promising noninvasive method for the early detection of urinary bladder cancer (UBC). However, limited clinical samples often hinder existing artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted diagnosis. This paper proposes TC-Sniffer, a novel bibranch framework for few-shot UBC diagnosis, leveraging easily obtainable UBC-related volatile organic components (VOCs) as auxiliary classification categories. These VOCs are biomarkers of UBC, helping the model learn more UBC-specific features, reducing overfitting in small sample scenarios, and reflecting the imbalanced distribution of clinical samples. TC-Sniffer employs intensity-based augmentation to address small sample size issues and focal loss to alleviate model bias due to the class imbalance caused by auxiliary VOCs. The architecture combines transformers and temporal convolutional neural networks to capture long- and short-range dependencies, achieving comprehensive representation learning. Additionally, feature-level constraints further enhance the learning of distinctive features for each class. Experimental results using e-nose data collected from a custom-designed sensor array show that TC-Sniffer significantly surpasses existing approaches, achieving a mean accuracy of 92.95% with only five UBC training samples. Moreover, the fine-grained classification results show that the model can distinguish between nonmuscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) and muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC), both of which are subtypes of UBC. The superior performance of TC-Sniffer highlights its potential for timely and accurate cancer diagnosis in challenging clinical settings.

The release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during the production, storage, and transportation of petroleum and its derivatives can be hazardous to human health and lead to secondary pollution. Addressing this challenge, this study introduces a sustainable and low-energy approach for synthesizing high-efficiency porous carbon materials, leveraging the abundant and renewable watermelon rinds as a carbon source. The carbonization and activation processes were optimized to minimize energy consumption while maximizing adsorptive performance. In this research, watermelon rinds were used as a source of carbon production, and melamine phosphate (FR-MP) was employed as a modifying agent. The FR-MP modified porous biomass-derived activated carbon (PWAC) was created by subjecting it to physical milling, carbonization, and activation. This approach not only utilized a waste biomass effectively but also reduced the overall carbon footprint of the production process. An examination of the effects of FR-MP dosage on the pore structure , surface chemical properties, and VOCs adsorption abilities of PWAC revealed that a higher FR-MP dosage resulted in a wider range of pore sizes within PWAC. The incorporation of FR-MP intensified the development of internal porosity and pore expansion in PWAC. Specifically, the optimized PWAC-0.3 exhibited a significant increase in specific surface area (3149 m²/g) and pore volume (1.76 cm³/g), enhancing adsorption capacities for acetone and n-hexane up to 1046 mg/g and 760 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, the PWAC demonstrated exceptional recyclability, maintaining 97% of its original adsorption capacity after five cycles, underscoring its sustainable and economic viability. The highly advanced hierarchical ultra-meso-macroporous structure of PWAC significantly reduced the diffusion resistance of VOCs, guaranteeing swift mass transfer and desorption of VOCs. Consequently, the developed PWAC represents a novel, cost-effective, and environmentally-friendly approach for VOCs adsorption, aligning with the principles of green chemistry and low-energy consumption. This research not only provides a promising solution for VOCs mitigation but also highlights the potential of waste biomass in producing high-performance carbon materials.
