Grapes are rich in diverse nutritional ingredients; however, they are perishable, posing challenges during postharvest storage. Melatonin (MT) regulates the physiological properties of fruit during the postharvest period. In this study, the ‘Red Globe’ grapes ( Vitis vinifera L.) were treated with 100 μmol L −1 MT solution and stored under cold condition for 56 d. Results showed that exogenous MT application maintained wax structure and delayed the degradation of cuticular wax. At the end of storage, the total cuticular wax content with MT treatment was increased by 26 % compared with that in the control. MT treatment stimulated the transcription of key genes involved in wax biosynthesis. Moreover, MT treatment inhibited the activity of pectin methyl esterase (9 %), polygalacturonase (24 %), and β -galactosidase (13 %), which slowed down the decrease in chelate-soluble pectin (19 %), and Na 2 CO 3 -soluble pectin (5 %) levels. In addition, MT treatment maintained higher levels of phenolic compound by up-regulating key biosynthetic genes. In summary, these results indicate that MT preserved postharvest quality of grape berries by regulating cuticular wax, cell wall, and phenolic metabolism.

During the transportation of oil and gas, the coexistence of wax crystals and natural gas hydrates is becoming an increasingly prominent problem. The deposition of these solids is likely to result in the pipeline blockage, which adversely affects the flow efficiency and safety of oil and gas. To address this issue, researchers have proposed jointly adding wax inhibitors and hydrate inhibitors to improve flow assurance. However, due to the significant differences in the mechanisms of various inhibitors, the interaction effects among wax inhibitors, hydrate inhibitors, wax crystals, and hydrates may potentially undermine the inhibitory efficacy. To better clarify this issue, this paper first provides a detailed elaboration on the types, mechanisms, and interaction relationships of various inhibitors, including kinetic inhibitors of gas hydrates, thermodynamic inhibitors of gas hydrates, antiagglomerates, wax dispersants, and pour point depressants. Subsequently, based on previous studies, the interaction process of hydrate inhibitors, wax inhibitors, hydrates, and wax crystals in waxy oil–gas–water multiphase systems is reviewed. Finally, this paper puts forward possible interaction mechanisms between wax inhibitors and hydrate inhibitors, providing useful references for researchers in this field.

Because of high water loss and rot observed in postharvest sweet potato ( Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) roots, a carnauba wax (CW)–based nanoemulsion without or with glycerol monolaurate (CW-GML) was developed by a high-energy emulsification approach. The effects of the two coatings on decay, respiration rate, weight loss, surface color, total soluble sugar, and starch content as well as the sensory quality of sweet potato roots were investigated during storage at 20°C for 50 days. Compared with the control treatment (water) and CW coating alone, CW-GML coating exhibited higher emulsion stability and antifungal activity, and treatment resulted in a uniform and continuous coating on roots. The CW-GML and CW coatings both effectively reduced root weight loss and respiration rate and inhibited decay incidence compared with control roots during storage. The CW-GML coating showed markedly stronger inhibition of root rot than the CW coating. Both the CW-GML and CW coatings promoted an increase in root sweetness but did not negatively impact perceived flavor. The overall results demonstrate that the CW-GML coating holds great promise as an effective postharvest technology to preserve food quality and extend shelf life of sweet potato roots.

Wax apple (Syzygium samarangense) is highly perishable postharvest. Even under refrigerated storage conditions, its shelf life typically lasts only about one week. This study developed a novel antibacterial food packaging membrane to extend its shelf life and explored the underlying preservation mechanisms. A composite fiber membrane was fabricated via solution blow spinning (SBS) using polyethylene oxide (PEO) and oxidized sesbania gum (OSG) incorporated with ε-polylysine (ε-PL). The composite membrane demonstrated exceptional antibacterial activity against bothE. coliandS. aureusby disrupting cell wall and membrane integrity, as evidenced by increased protein leakage, alkaline phosphatase activity, and electrical conductivity. Morphological observations through scanning electron microscopy confirmed extensive cellular damage and bactericidal effects. During nine days of ambient storage, the PEO/OSG/PL membrane significantly maintained the postharvest quality of wax apples. This was evidenced by a lower decay index (2.22 ± 0.19) and weight loss rate (5.32 ± 0.16%) compared to the control group, alongside better preservation of firmness (4.11 ± 0.08 N) and color stability. The treatment suppressed respiratory rate and delayed the degradation of soluble solids and titratable acidity. Furthermore, it enhanced antioxidant capacity through higher peroxidase activity and reduced malondialdehyde accumulation, indicating attenuated oxidative stress. Non-targeted metabolomics analysis revealed that the membrane treatment modulated critical metabolic pathways, particularly phenylalanine metabolism and linoleic acid metabolism. These metabolic adjustments contributed to enhanced defense responses and delayed senescence. The results show that the PEO/OSG/ε-PL fiber membrane acts as an effective active packaging material by inhibiting microbial growth and regulating metabolism. This provides a potential method to extend the shelf life of perishable fruits.

Despite the excellent characteristics of carnauba wax (CW), hydrophobicity in particular, its complementary effect on the enhancement of konjac glucomannan (KGM) films remains poorly documented. KGM is a promising food bio-packaging material with excellent film-forming abilities, which could be improved further through modification of its hydrophilic nature using CW. In this study, emulsified composite films (KW) of KGM incorporated with varied CW concentration levels (0%, 4%, 8%, 12%, 16% and 20% w/w) were successfully prepared by solvent casting method. Increasing CW in KW films significantly improved the hydrophobicity, barrier and mechanical properties. The recorded improvements in functional properties relative to KGM films include fivefold solubility reduction, twofold contact angle and strength increment, as well as significant increase in stretch (61%) and decrease in water vapour transmission rate (48%). Microstructure analyses using scanning electron microscopy demonstrated remarkable improvements in cohesiveness, smoothness and homogeneity in KW aggregates with higher CW concentrations. Generally, our findings reveal the potential use of KW films as food packaging material which could reduce the availability of unsafe and environmentally unfriendly food packages in the market.

The potential solar thermal utilization of solar energy based on phase change materials (PCMs) is limited by their low thermal conductivity and weak solar absorption capacity. Among various additives used to enhance the thermal conductivity of PCMs, expanded graphite (EG) has been proved to be a low-cost but effective choice. This work aims to further enhance the solar absorption capacity of EG-paraffin wax composite PCMs by adding small amounts of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as the light absorbent. The prepared composite PCMs with 5 wt.% EG and 2 wt.% CNTs show superior thermal conductivity (2.05 W/m⋅K), high solar absorption capacity (94.2%) while maintaining the high latent heat (159 kJ/kg). Moreover, these superior thermal and optical properties can be maintained after 1000 melting-freezing cycles. Our results provide a high-performance composite PCM that may be used in solar-thermal conversion applications.

Conventional methods for determining Wax Appearance Point (WAP) and wax content in crude oils—such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), rheology, and modified acetone precipitation (SY/T 7550–2000)—offer established reliability but face challenges with complexity, sensitivity, and operational ease. This study introduces Back Scattered Light (BSL) analysis method as alternative that is rapid, non-invasive and leverages wax particles’ unique scattering properties. Using BSL, WAPs were accurately measured for six crude oil samples (YM, YD, SHB, XJN, YQ, GD) at temperatures between 16°C and 48°C. The method was validated using samples YD and YM whose results were compared with the coventional methods. The BSL method showed great accuracy, achieving a 1–5 % error margin for WAP. Unlike classical methods, BSL ably identified the two WAPs in YM (47°C and 36.33°C), corresponding to distinct paraffin and microcrystalline wax types that were confirmed with optical microscopy. Wax content estimations of 20.29 % (YD) and 35.12 % (YM) were consistent with DSC and SY/T 7550–2000 within a 5 % margin. Experiments with commercial wax in heptane showed BSL’s sensitivity to both macro- and microcrystalline wax types. The BSL method’s reduced sample requirements, shorter testing times, and ease of operation make it a compelling alternative to traditional approaches, with significant potential for enhancing sustainable wax management in crude oil processing.

To improve the hydrophobicity of wood, utilizing a silica/wax composite emulsion (PPW@SiO 2 ), which was prepared by maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene wax (PPW) and nanosilica, served as a hydrophobic agent. The hydrophobicity modifying process of fast-growing poplar was carried out by heating permeation and hot pressing to prepare in-depth hydrophobic wood. The results show that the hydrophobic agent can fill the pores of poplar partly and form a two-dimensional, “petal-like”, rough hydrophobic structure in the pores. The water contact angle (WCA) on the surface of modified poplar can reach 140.3° when the amount of SiO 2 is 1%. Even after surface grinding of 3 mm, the WCA is still higher than 130°, indicating the hydrophobic wood has a good performance of in-depth hydrophobicity. Furthermore, the surface of hydrophobic wood presents an exceptional self-cleaning function, and the physical and mechanical properties are also improved. Compared with a reference sample, the density, surface hardness, modulus of elasticity, compressive strength, and modulus of rupture of hydrophobic wood are increased by 66.67%, 53.16%, 55.60%, 49.50%, and 40.87%, respectively, and the water absorption in hydrophobic wood is also significantly decreased.

Dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) is injected into wellbores as an asphaltene dispersant to alleviate asphaltene deposition problems. The addition of DBSA will change the dispersion of asphaltenes in the crude oil, affecting the wax precipitation property of the crude oil as well as the adsorption behavior of asphaltenes at the oil–water interface, thus significantly altering the W/O emulsion’s stability. In order to provide better theoretical guidance for oil–water separation in oilfield gathering and production processes, in the paper, the effects of DBSA concentration (from 0 to 500 ppm) on the emulsions’ stability containing both asphaltenes and paraffin wax and the mechanism were systematically investigated at two different temperatures (30 and 15 °C) based on the wax precipitation and rheological properties of the model crude oil, the oil–water interface adsorption properties, and the macroscopic and microscopic properties of the emulsion. The outcomes demonstrated that the test temperature had a highly substantial impact on the model emulsion. The main element affecting the stability of the emulsion at 30 °C (above the wax appearance temperature (WAT)) was the interfacial structure’s strength. The low-temperature flowability of the oil phase primarily controlled the process of emulsion stabilization at 15 °C (below the WAT). Furthermore, we speculate that the wax crystals could precipitate on the surface of the emulsified droplets, which also facilitated emulsion stability at 15 °C. Combining the above experimental observations, the mechanism of DBSA concentration affecting the emulsion stability was proposed, which would contribute to solving the issues in the emulsion breaking and dewatering process of crude oil emulsions.

During deep-sea and ultra-deep-sea oil and gas exploitation, multiphase transmission lines are prone to be clogged by sediments produced by the various components in crude oils under extreme subsea conditions, such as hydrates, wax, resins, and asphaltenes. The pipelines face higher plugging risks when these deposits exist simultaneously. In order to elucidate the effects of wax and anti-agglomerants (AA) on hydrate growth and aggregation, microscopic morphology observation and cohesive force measurement of cyclopentane hydrate particles were conducted through a piece of equipment similar to the micromechanical force (MMF) apparatus. Results showed that in the low concentration of AA (0.05 wt%), hydrate particles experienced an approximately 10 % reduction in the profile area after converting water droplets to hydrate particles. Furthermore, the cohesive force between hydrate particles decreased from 8.57 ± 0.90 mN/m to 3.51 ± 0.43 mN/m as the AA concentration increased from 0.05 to 0.2 wt%. On the other hand, the presence of wax significantly altered the morphologies of hydrate particles. When wax coexisted with AA, the hydrate cohesive force was reduced by wax under low AA concentration (0.05 wt%) but increased under higher AA concentration. For a given concentration of AA, the hydrate cohesive force increased with the increasing wax content (from 0.1 to 0.3 wt%), indicating that wax crystals weakened the efficiency of AA, such as Span 80. Additionally, the effect of surface wetness of waxy hydrate particles on their cohesion was also investigated. The liquid bridge appeared between wet waxy hydrate particles, while the solid–solid contact existed between dry waxy hydrate particles. The cohesive force between dry waxy hydrate particles was smaller. Either liquid bridge or solid–solid contact that dominated hydrate cohesive force was affected by wax.

The natural waxes used in traditional hot-waxed wood techniques are expensive and have unstable properties. This results in poor adhesion and hardness of the hot-waxed wood with natural waxes, and heat stability needs to be improved. To overcome these problems, a graft modified Fischer-Tropsch wax with vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride has been developed as an alternative to natural waxes for hot-waxed wood technology. The surface properties of Fischer-Tropsch wax and natural waxeswere systematically compared before and after modification, focusing on the effect of the modified Fischer-Tropsch wax on the surface properties of hot-waxed wood at different hot waxing temperatures. The results show that, compared to unmodified Fischer-Tropsch and natural waxes, the modified Fischer-Tropsch waxed wood has significantly improved adhesion, surface hardness enhanced to 2H, retained wet moisture buffering capacity with a hydrophobic surface, improved thermal stability, and significantly improved surface color and gloss. Vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride grafted Fischer-Tropsch waxes can therefore be an effective alternative to natural waxes in hot-waxed wood technology, while modified Fischer-Tropsch wax hot-waxed technology is a promising method for decorating wooden architectural, interior and furniture surfaces.

The precipitation and deposition of waxes in high waxy crude oil often result in the low throughput and clogging of pipeline. Adding polymers is a practical approach to solve these problems. In this study, poly(styrene-co-docosyl maleate)s (PSDMs) were synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. The chemical structure and molecular weight of copolymers were characterized using Fourier infrared spectroscopy, 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography. The ratio of phenyl to aliphatic branches varies from 10:8 to 25:8. The crystallization and morphology of waxes in model oil were investigated by x-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and polarized light microscopy. The cold flow behaviors of crude oil were evaluated by rheological methods. With the increase of the ratio of phenyl to aliphatic branches, the crystallinity, viscosity, and yield stress of crude oil first increase and then decrease. In the presence of PSDM-2, the crystallinity and enthalpy of phase transition (Δ H ) are reduced by 44.2% and 48.9%. Thus, the pour point, viscosity, and yield stress of crude oil are reduced by 6.0°C, 76.8% and 77.4%, respectively. Therefore, well-defined PSDMs are promising to be remarkable flow improvers for waxy crude oils.
