Ammonia-Etched High-Entropy Prussian Blue Analogues Enabling Accelerated Zn2+ Transport for Aqueous Zinc-Ion Storage

Qian Li,Yuanmeng Fan,Jiuer Yu,Fang Yuan,Haojun Liu,Dengji Xiao,Jian Yang

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) represent a promising energy-storage technology due to their inherent safety and low cost. High-entropy Prussian blue analogues (HEPBAs) have attracted considerable interest as AZIB cathode materials owing to their robust frameworks and multimetal synergy, yet their dense structure and excessive adsorbed and lattice water severely limit Zn2+ diffusion and active-site accessibility. Herein, a controlled ammonia-etching strategy is developed to optimize the microstructure of HEPBAs, effectively removing inactive water and creating accessible ion-transport pathways while preserving the primary framework. During etching, the coordinated NH3 and in situ generated OH– selectively dissolve weakly bonded metal centers, promoting the elimination of adsorbed and lattice water and inducing local structural relaxation. This preferential etching results in a hollow architecture, simultaneously enlarging the specific surface area and unmasking electrochemically accessible active sites that were previously inaccessible. As a result, the etched HEPBA cathode exhibits an enhanced Zn2+ diffusion coefficient of 6.78 × 10–12 cm2 s–1, exhibiting excellent cycling stability with a capacity retention of 90.55% over 1000 cycles at 0.5 A g–1. This work demonstrates that moderate ammonia etching can regulate the coordination environment and promote ion transport in high-entropy framework materials for advanced AZIBs.

Zn2+-crosslinking enhanced natural gelatinizer binders for low self-discharge and long-life Zn-I2 batteries

Yunming Li,Xiaojing Wu,Xinle Sun,Jianuo Wang,Xiangyu Liu,Lingyu Du,Litao Kang

A series of natural gelatinizers is evaluated as alternative binders to replace the conventional PVDF binder. • The waterborne binders can improve both cycling stability and anti-self-discharge performance. • The optimized binder slows the 200 h self-discharge rate from 37% down to 16%, while prolonging the lifetime by ∼ 2.6 times. Aqueous zinc-iodine (Zn-I 2 ) batteries have been identified as one kind of promising energy storage device, but still suffer from self-discharge and short lifetime problems due to polyiodide shuttling. To improve the polyiodide confining ability of the I 2 cathodes, a series of natural gelatinizers, including carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), polyanionic cellulose (PAC), xanthan gum (XG), and sodium alginate (SA), are evaluated as alternative binders to replace the conventional polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). Experimental results suggest that all these water-borne binders can improve the cycling stability of the electrodes by forming a flexible hydrogel skeleton. In addition, the abundant heteroatoms in the binders can effectively adsorb polyiodide and suppress the shuttle effect. As a result, the adoption of these water-borne binders can significantly slow down the self-discharge rate of the resulting Zn-I 2 batteries, compared to the traditional PVDF binder (capacity loss: 16–21% vs. 37%, after 200 h). Among these binders, SA endows the cathodes with the best anti-self-discharging performance (capacity loss: 23.7% vs. 49.3% after 500 h, compared with the PVDF-binder battery). This strategy opens a new avenue to enhance the anti-self-discharge performance of Zn-I 2 batteries with natural polymers. Preferential Lewis-basic ion pathways for accelerated Zn2+ diffusion and uniform deposition at zinc metal anodes

Linxia Yu,Quan Zong,Xin Li,Guoying Wei,Qilong Zhang,Qiaoling Kang,Jingji Zhang,Gongxun Bai,Shuang Zhou,Anqiang Pan,Chengbin Jin

With advantages of high safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness, aqueous zinc metal batteries (ZMBs) are widely recognized as potential next-generation systems for grid-scale energy storage. However, their widespread application suffers from unstable Zn/electrolyte interfaces induced by uncontrolled Zn 2+ desolvation, migration, and deposition. Herein, we propose a molecularly engineered interfacial layer, created through a hydrolysis-condensation molecular assembly, that couples hydrophobic exclusion, preferential Zn 2+ transport pathways, and Lewis-basic coordination centers within a single framework. The strong electronegativity and hydrophobic properties of the macromolecular layer effectively repel anions and exclude free water molecules from the Zn surface, thereby suppressing hydrogen evolution and byproduct accumulation. Meanwhile, the preferential ion channels enriched with Lewis-base sites provide favorable Zn 2+ coordination environments, accelerate desolvation kinetics, and promote preferential ion migration, ultimately lowering nucleation barriers and homogenizing Zn 2+ flux. Benefiting from this regulation of interfacial chemistry and transport kinetics, the modified Zn anode achieves dendrite-free and highly reversible Zn plating/stripping, delivering a long cycling lifespan (3600 h at 1 mA cm −2 and 1 mAh cm −2 ), high Coulombic efficiency (99.7% after 1200 cycles), and excellent full-cell capacity retention (95% after 2000 cycles).

Crepe Cake Structured Ca-Organic-CNT Frameworks to Boost Zn2+ Intercalation in Aqueous Zn/Organic Battery

Wen S. Gou,Tian Jiang,Qi Fan,Chang H. Zhu,Rui R. Zhang,Shi J. Yuan

Organic-based frameworks are increasingly recognized as promising cathode materials for aqueous zinc–ion batteries (AZIBs), owing to their structural specificity and renewable/safety nature. The electrochemical performance, however, is less than optimal due to the inadequate structural stability and poor electronic/ionic conductivity of the organic-based frameworks, resulting in rapid capacity decay and poor rate capability. Herein, a crepe cake structured Ca-Organic-CNT framework is designed to address these two problems. In this material architecture, the porous carbon nanotube (CNT) network facilitates efficient electron transfer and enhances structural stability, while Ca-Organic frameworks with crystal enlargement boost Zn 2+ intercalation and release. The hybrid material exhibits balanced high performance with respect to specific capacity and cycling stability. A reversible specific capacity of 475 mAh g −1 is achieved at 50 mA g −1 with a high capacity retention rate of 91% even after 400 cycles. This work provides a strategy for the rational design of organic electrode materials for high performance AZIBs.

Advancement of a multifunctional composite coating encapsulating CGA-Zn2+ MPN nanoparticles for enhanced postharvest fruit preservation

Wei Liu,Lin Wang,Jingcheng Hao

Fresh fruits and vegetables, rich in vitamins and essential nutrients, play an essential role in supporting human health. However, the perishability during transit and storage causes rapid degradation; consuming spoiled items poses significant health risks. Extending the shelf life of fresh produce has therefore become a key challenge for the food industry. In this study, a multifunctional composite coating was developed by integrating chlorogenic acid–zinc ion (CGA-Zn 2+ ) metal–phenolic network (MPN) particles into a polymer matrix composed of sesbania gum (SG) and biguanide-modified chitosan (Bi-Ch). Cherry tomatoes were used as the model fruit to investigate the coating's preservation effect. The CGA-Zn 2+ MPN particles provided strong antioxidant properties, which worked in combination with the antibacterial activity of Bi-Ch, enabling the coating to offer both protective and bioactive functions. The addition of MPN particles significantly improved the antioxidant capacity of the coating, increasing it from 64.83 % to 97.31 %. Moreover, the coating showed enhanced antibacterial performance. Preservation results confirmed that this composite coating effectively extended the shelf life of cherry tomatoes to 9 days at least while maintaining their quality. Cytocompatibility assays validated its safety for food applications. As a biocompatible, readily removable intervention, this approach offers considerable promise for enhancing fresh fruit stability throughout supply chains—mitigating waste and bolstering food safety.

Optimizing Mn in Prussian blue analogs with double redox active sites to induce boosted Zn2+ storage

Lingqian Ye,Hao Fu,Ruirui Cao,Jun Yang

Prussian Blue analogs (PBAs) are a suitable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) cathode material, but they face issues related to low specific capacity and cycling lifespan due to insufficient active sites and poor ion de-intercalation structural stability. In this study, Mn-Prussian Blue Analog (Mn-PBA) is fabricated using a simple co-precipitation method and the morphology of Mn-PBA is further optimized through artificially manipulating concentration gradients strategy, effectively enhancing the structural stability of Zn 2+ de-intercalation. Furthermore, the introduction of Mn established dual Zn 2+ active centers in Mn-PBA (Mn-O and Fe(CN) 6 ] 4− /[Fe(CN) 6 ] 3− ), leading to an increased specific capacity. As a proof of concept for AZIBs, the optimized Mn-PBA-3 cathode exhibits a high reversible specific capacity of 143.5 mAh/g and maintains a capacity retention of 88.5 % after 250 cycles at 1 A/g, surpassing commercial MnO 2 (30.5 mAh/g after 100 cycles). Mn-PBA-3 also delivers a high capacity of 79.0 mA h g −1 after 2000 cycles of 10 A/g. The mechanism of the Zn 2+ double redox reaction of Mn-PBA-3 has been revealed in detail by in situ Raman and a series of ex situ techniques. Under a high operating voltage window of 0–1.9 V, Zn//Mn-PBA-3 demonstrates a capacity of 99.3 mAh/g after 800 cycles (5 A/g) by assembling zinc ion button battery. This work has reference significance for structurally modulated PBAs used in high performance AZIBs.

Preparation of extractant-containing pickering emulsion hydrogel from gelatin/sodium alginate composite materials for Zn2+ adsorption

Fu AiWei,Liang Yaodong,He Yongjun

In the field of aqueous metal ion removal, conventional metal ion extraction methods often face limitations such as low separation efficiency and leaching of extractants, leading to secondary environmental contamination. This study used the Pickering emulsion templating method, with gelatin/sodium alginate complexes as stabilizing particles, to fabricate a Pickering emulsion hydrogel (PEHG) loaded with the zinc extractant di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (P204). The resulting hydrogel system not only improves emulsion stability but also effectively sequesters Zn 2 ⁺ ions from aqueous solutions. The structure of the materials was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The influence of pH, adsorbent dosage, initial zinc concentration, and contact time on adsorption capacity was investigated by the study. Results showed that at pH 4, the PEHG exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 13.47 mg g⁻ 1 for Zn 2 ⁺. The adsorption behavior follows pseudo-second-order kinetics and fits the Langmuir–Freundlich isotherm, suggesting a chemisorption-dominated mechanism. This corresponds to monolayer adsorption of a single solute from dilute solution onto heterogeneous surfaces. The adsorbent retains over 80% removal efficiency through five regeneration cycles, demonstrating excellent reusability. This study establishes a theoretical framework for preparing extractant-incorporated Pickering emulsion hydrogel microspheres using gelatin/sodium alginate composites. We developed an environmentally friendly and cost-effective adsorbent for heavy metal ions.

Y3+/Zn2+ Codoped LATP/PVDF-HFP Coating Enables Bulk–Interface Regulation for Stable Lithium Metal Batteries

Qiyuan Zhu,Yuhang Yang,Jiling Song,Jiqiang Wu,Jianbing Guo

Developing functional separators capable of simultaneously suppressing lithium dendrite growth and enabling compatibility with high-voltage cathodes is critical for realizing long-cycle-life lithium metal batteries. Herein, a synergistic bulk–interface regulation strategy is achieved via a coatable Y3+/Zn2+ codoped LATP/PVDF-HFP composite coating applied onto a commercial polypropylene (PP) separator. Y3+/Zn2+ codoped Li1.3Al0.275Y0.025Ti1.7(PO4)3 (LAYTP-Zn) is synthesized via a solid-state route and uniformly integrated with PVDF-HFP to form a conformal coating with strong interfacial adhesion. Y3+/Zn2+ incorporation induces lattice expansion of LATP, thereby broadening bulk Li+ transport pathways. In addition, Zn2+ regulates interfacial chemistry by enhancing electrolyte dissociation and anchoring anions through Lewis acid interactions, while also promoting the formation of polar β-phase PVDF-HFP, collectively increasing the Li+ transference number to 0.79. In addition, the polymer matrix serves as a physical barrier that mitigates direct interfacial side reactions. The coordinated regulation of bulk ion conduction and interfacial ion distribution enables a more uniform Li+ flux and facilitates the formation of a LiF-enriched and mechanically robust interphase, thereby suppressing dendrite nucleation and growth. As a result, Li||Li symmetric cells exhibit stable cycling for over 3000 h at 1 mA·cm–2 and 1 mAh·cm–2. Furthermore, Li||LFP and Li||NCM811 half-cells deliver capacity retentions of 91.2% after 800 cycles at 1 C and 95.1% after 200 cycles at 0.5 C, respectively, while maintaining stable operation up to 4.73 V. This work provides a scalable separator design that integrates bulk transport optimization with interfacial regulation, offering a practical pathway toward high-performance lithium metal batteries.

Xiao Wang,Yueying Wang,Baobin Wang,Lei Zhang,Guihua Yang,Kai Zhang,Qimeng Jiang,Hao Li,Jiachuan Chen

Integrating desired multifunctional properties into self-powered sensors working under extreme environments remains challenging. Herein, highly conductive, mechanical resilient and self-healable hydrogels are developed by initial regulation of hydrogen bonding network of cellulose-Zn 2+ solvation structure with further employing of borax crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) network. Thanks to the dynamic interactions and ion chelating capability, the resultant Zn 2+ -Polyvinyl alcohol-Cellulose-Borax hydrogels (ZPCB) delivered remarkable stretchability (1059.5%), excellent ionic conductivity (29.4 mS cm −1 ), and exceptional anti-freezing property (−60 °C), self-healing capability (98.5%) and water retention ability under humid environment. With these attributes, the hydrogel assembled triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) demonstrated fast response (237 ms), high open circuit voltage (128 V), power density (8 W m −2 ) and durable output performance (5000 cycles) enabling powering small electronics and reliable signal acquisition under harsh conditions (−60 °C or placed for 45 days). Moreover, the TENG integrated with a lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) yields 99.17% accuracy in motion-pattern recognition, encompassing clapping, jumping, slow walking, fast walking, running, and tumbling. Overall, this work offers a robust, eco-friendly, and intelligent pathway for next-generation wearable electronics and self-powered sensing systems operating in extreme environments.

Molecular Regulation of Vinylogous Urethane Networks by Zn2+ Coordination: Balancing Stress Relaxation, Creep Response, and Reprocessability

Wang Yanqing,Zhao Hongzhe,Xiao Jizhe,Liu Yuetao,Zhang Na,Gao Chuanhui

Dynamic covalent polymer networks based on vinylogous urethane (VU) bonds are attractive reprocessable materials, but their service stability is strongly affected by residual amines, network mobility, and bond-exchange kinetics. Herein, we report a Zn 2+ -regulated VU network constructed from trifunctional acetoacetate oligomers and mixed amine curing agents. A slight excess of acetoacetate functionality was used to minimize residual primary amines and suppress uncontrolled low-temperature exchange. Zn 2+ ions were further introduced as reversible coordination sites that interact with nitrogen- and oxygen-containing groups in the network. The resulting materials show matrix-dependent mechanical behavior: moderate Zn 2+ contents improve strength and energy dissipation in flexible D400-based networks, whereas Zn 2+ mainly increases stiffness in rigid IPDA-based networks. Stress relaxation and creep tests reveal a concentration-dependent trade-off between network stability and dynamic rearrangement. Temperature-dependent stress relaxation further reveals a reduced apparent activation energy after Zn 2+ incorporation. This work provides a molecular strategy for regulating the relaxation, creep response, and reprocessability of VU-based dynamic polymer networks.

An aqueous BiI3-Zn battery with dual mechanisms of Zn2+ (de)intercalation and I−/I2 redox

Qi Deng,Fangzhong Liu,Xiongwei Wu,Changzhu Li,Weibin Zhou,Bei Long

The development of aqueous battery with dual mechanisms is now arousing more and more interest. The dual mechanisms of Zn 2+ (de)intercalation and I − /I 2 redox bring unexpected effects. Herein, differing from previous studies using ZnI 2 additive, this work designs an aqueous BiI 3 -Zn battery with self-supplied I − . Ex situ tests reveal the conversion of BiI 3 into Bi (discharge) and BiOI (charge) at the 1st cycle and the dissolved I − in electrolyte. The active I − species enhances the specific capacity and discharge medium voltage of electrode as well as improves the generation of Zn dendrite and by-product. Furthermore, the porous hard carbon is introduced to enhance the electronic/ionic conductivity and adsorb iodine species, proven by experimental and theoretical studies. Accordingly, the well-designed BiI 3 -Zn battery delivers a high reversible capacity of 182 mA h g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 , an excellent rate capability with 88 mA h g −1 at 10 A g −1 , and an impressive cyclability with 63% capacity retention over 20 K cycles at 10 A g −1 . An excellent electrochemical performance is obtained even at a high mass loading of 6 mg cm −2 . Moreover, a flexible quasi-solid-state BiI 3 -Zn battery exhibits satisfactory battery performances. This work provides a new idea for designing high-performance aqueous battery with dual mechanisms.

Zinc-Organometallic Framework Vaccine Controlled-Release Zn2+ Regulates Tumor Extracellular Matrix Degradation Potentiate Efficacy of Immunotherapy

Lin Ding,Minli Liang,Yuanyuan Li,Mei Zeng,Meiting Liu,Wei Ma,Fuming Chen,Chenchen Li,Rui L. Reis,Fu-Rong Li,Yanli Wang

Tumor extracellular matrix (ECM) not only forms a physical barrier for T cells infiltration, but also regulates multiple immunosuppressive pathways, which is an important reason for immunotherapy failure. The cyclic guanosine monophosphate-adenosine monophosphate synthase-stimulator of interferon genes (cGAS-STING) pathway plays a key role in activating CD8 + T cells, maintaining CD8 + T cells stemness and enhancing the antitumor effect. Herein, a zinc-organometallic framework vaccine (ZPM@OVA-CpG) prepared by self-assembly, which achieves site-directed release of Zn 2+ in dendritic cell (DC) lysosomes and tumor microenvironment under acidic conditions, is reported. The vaccine actively targets DC, significantly enhances cGAS-STING signal, promotes DC maturation and antigen cross-presentation, and induces strong activation of CD8 + T cells. Meanwhile, the vaccine reaches the tumor site, releasing Zn 2+ , significantly up-regulates the activity of matrix metalloproteinase-2, degrades various collagen components of tumor ECM, effectively alleviates immune suppression, and significantly enhances the tumor infiltration and killing of CD8 + T cells. ZPM@OVA-CpG vaccine not only solves the problem of low antigen delivery efficiency and weak CD8 + T cells activation ability, but also achieves the degradation of tumor ECM via the vaccine for the first time, providing a promising therapeutic platform for the development of efficient novel tumor vaccines.
