Improving the ablation resistance of carbon fiber-reinforced silicon carbide (C/SiC) composites is essential to meet the stringent demands of ultra-high-temperature applications, but traditional empirical design approaches are resource-intensive and time-consuming. This study presents a novel data-driven methodology integrating machine learning (ML) with experimental validation to optimize C/SiC composite ablation resistance. Through systematic data preprocessing and feature analysis of 102 experimental samples, an XGBoost regression model was developed, achieving satisfactory prediction accuracy (mean absolute error < ∼0.075, mean squared error < ∼0.015, and coefficient of determination [R 2 ] > ∼0.75) for ablation rate. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis revealed that modifier properties, particularly standard enthalpy and melting point, predominantly influence ablation resistance. The ML-guided design strategy, implemented through Bayesian optimization, led to the successful fabrication of ZrB 2 -modified C/SiC composites with exceptional ablation resistance. The optimized composite, containing approximately 20.0 vol.% ZrB 2 , achieved a linear ablation rate of 2.083 µm/s under oxyacetylene torch testing, representing a significant improvement over conventional compositions. Microstructural analysis confirmed the formation of a dense SiO 2 ‒B 2 O 3 protective layer, validating the predicted mechanism of enhanced ablation resistance. This work establishes a robust framework for accelerated development of ultra-high-temperature ceramics and demonstrates the efficacy of ML-driven approaches in materials design optimization. An object-oriented software with interactive graphical user interface has been developed. These methodologies have been integrated into an interactive software, Modified C/SiC Ablation Rate intelligent design Software (MARS), creating an efficient tool for the accelerated design of C/SiC composites with tailored ablation performance.

In this work, two ceramizable phenolic adhesives were prepared using ZrSi 2 particles or ZrSi 2 /B 4 C mix particles as the inorganic fillers. The thermal stability, bonding strength , microstructure and phase composition of the adhesives were investigated by TGA , shear strength of Al 2 O 3 joints, SEM, EDS , XRD and XPS . The results show that these two adhesives have different bonding performances and ceramicization evolutions above 600 °C in air due to the addition of the second phase particles B 4 C. The bonding strength of ZrSi 2 /B 4 C modified phenolic adhesive after treatment at 1200 ℃ can be as high as 36.6 MPa, while the bonding strength of ZrSi 2 modified phenolic adhesive under the same conditions is only 17.5 MPa. B 4 C undergoes oxidation reaction before ZrSi 2 , and the oxidation product B 2 O 3 liquid phase not only reacts with ZrSi 2 to form oxidation-resistant ZrB 2 , but also can dissolve the high temperatures defects of the adhesive and chemically bond with the Al 2 O 3 substrates at the interface.

The protection for carbon fibers is crucial for carbon fiber-reinforced materials. Carbon coatings were prepared on carbon fibers through gelation, hydrothermal caramelization and pyrolysis, with glucose as precursor of carbon. The glucose-to-carbon conversion mechanism was explored, as well as the effect of high pressure in hydrothermal reactor and the catalytic role of KCl. The high pressure suppressed gas escape and was beneficial to the formation of dense carbon coating. The KCl promoted the generation of 5-HMF, thereby accelerated the glucose-to-caramel conversion. C f /ZrB 2 -SiC composites were prepared by introducing ZrB 2 -SiC slurry into the carbon fiber preform and hot press sintering. The carbon coating protected the carbon fibers from damage during sintering at high temperature. The carbon coating significantly improved the flexural strength, fracture toughness, and fracture work of C f /ZrB 2 -SiC composites from 122 MPa, 3.24 MPa‧m 1/2 , and 231.6 J/m 2 to 321 MPa, 5.87 MPa‧m 1/2 , and 567.1 J/m 2 , respectively.

Photothermal immunotherapy, especially combined with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) targeting programmed cell death 1 (PD-1), marks a breakthrough in cancer treatment. However, therapy often triggers compensatory upregulation of other immune checkpoints. This study introduces an advanced strategy to enhance the efficacy of photothermal immunotherapy by utilizing a novel nanocarrier that targets both PD-1 and T-cell immunoreceptor with Ig and ITIM domains (TIGIT) immune checkpoints. The dual blockade could counteract the compensatory upregulation of immune checkpoints triggered by PD-1 targeted therapies alone. The nanocarrier of this work is composed of a ZrB 2 photothermal core and a mesoporous silica layer, and finally coated with biocompatible polydopamine. This design could effectively deliver both TIGIT and PD-1 inhibitors directly to tumor sites, minimizing systemic side effects such as cytokine release syndrome. We demonstrate that this approach not only enhances cytotoxic responses of T and NK cells, but also promotes macrophage polarization towards a tumor-suppressing M1 phenotype dendritic cell maturation and immunogenic cell death. Our findings provide a promising avenue for cancer immunotherapy.
