Isooctane attracts great interest in recent years because of its promising potential as friendly-environmental gasoline, which is obtained by dimerization of isobutene with a hydrogenation step. Herein, a solid acid catalyst sulfated zirconia modified by ZnO was prepared. The oligomerization of isobutene had been investigated over ZrO 2 -SO 4 and ZnO( X )/ZrO 2 -SO 4 catalyst in order to find efficient catalysts for the production of isobutene oligomers . The presence of ZnO obviously enhanced the dimerization of isobutene and ZnO( X )/ZrO 2 -SO 4 exhibited the highest di-isobutene yield of 60%. Kinetic studies showed the higher trimerization-to-dimerization activation energy ratios of ZnO( X )/ZrO 2 -SO 4 than those of ZrO 2 -SO 4 from 353 to 393 K. In addition, reaction rate of dimerization was higher than trimerization over ZnO( X )/ZrO 2 -SO 4 . The high L/B ratio manifested the capability to enhance the selectivity of C 8 in isobutene dimerization. Furthermore, ZnO( X )/ZrO 2 -SO 4 exhibited stable conversion for the dimerization of isobutene.

Ni-Cu/TiN-ZrO2 nanocomposite coating was pulse electrodeposited by incorporation of Cu, TiN and ZrO2 simultaneously in Ni deposits from a citrate bath in the presence of additives. The surface morphology, structural and electrochemical properties of Ni-Cu/TiN-ZrO2 nanocomposite coating were evaluated. Results illustrated that the nanocomposite coating exhibits nodular-like structure with aggregated granules dispersed on its surface. The anti-corrosion performance of Ni-Cu deposits could be reinforced much by incorporation of TiN-ZrO2 nanoparticles. The surface of the coating contains Ni, Cu, Ti, Zr, O and C elements and indicates the formation of the oxide layer. The corrosion resistance of the nanocomposite coating is not only dependent on the current density and duty cycle, but also their combination. The Ni-Cu/TiN-ZrO2 nanocomposite coating electrodeposited at duty cycle of 70% and current density of 4 A dm−2 has the highest anti-corrosion performance. In comparison with duty cycle and current density, the effect of frequency on corrosion resistance is not much.

In the present work, we synthesized ZrO 2 /CeO 2 /polyacrylic acid (PAA) nanocomposites (nanozyme) with phosphatase-like activity. ZrO 2 evenly distributed in CeO 2 nanorods considered as lewis acids to enhance the phosphatase-like activity of CeO 2 nanorods. Furthermore, PAA was used to coat ZrO 2 /CeO 2 / nanorods and improve the dispersion, stability and robustness. The ZrO 2 /CeO 2 /PAA nanocomposites had 100% enhanced phosphatase-like activity compared with CeO 2 nanorods and excellent adaptability in a wide pH range from 4.0 to 12.0. ZrO 2 /CeO 2 /PAA nanocomposites could hydrolyze methyl parathion (MP) to p -nitrophenol ( p -NP) with bright yellow color for colorimetric detection. The developed colorimetric detection system showed a linear response from 7.60 × 10 -11 -7.60 × 10 -8 M with a detection limit of 0.021 nM and was successfully applied for the determination of MP in corn samples.

ZrO2 supports, with diverse morphologies (hollow sphere, star, rod, mesoporous), were produced using hydrothermal and evaporation-induced self-assembly methods. Zirconia-supported vanadium oxide catalysts were prepared by wet impregnation and used for the low-temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with ammonia. Characterization of catalysts includes N2 physisorption, elementary analysis, X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, temperature-programmed reduction by H2, and temperature-programmed desorption of NH3. Significant differences in terms of activity are measured. 3 wt % V2O5 supported on mesoporous ZrO2 (V/MZ) presents excellent N2 yields (>90%, in the 200–400 °C interval), with a wide operating temperature window (NO conversion > 95%, in the 225–425 °C interval), and less interesting performances were obtained when vanadium oxide is supported over stars, hollow spheres, and rods. Surface characterization showed a content of tetravalent vanadium ion, when supported, decreasing in the order of mesoporous > hollow sphere > star > rod. This order is in perfect agreement with the order of performance of the catalyst in the NH3-SCR reaction. The impact of tetravalent ion’s presence on the surface is confirmed by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy analysis, Brønsted acid sites generated on the surface, and the V4+-OH species involved in the reaction. The production of more important nitrite species over the tetragonal supported vanadium oxide catalyst could be another reason for the excellent NH3-SCR performance displayed by the V/MZ catalyst. When supported over monoclinic zirconia, like vanadium oxide over star-type morphology, the adsorbed NH3 species (NH4+ and coordinated NH3) reacted with NOx adsorption species (nitrate) to form ammonium nitrate. Ammonium nitrate can be decomposed to N2 and N2O (or NO2). Thus, NO conversion curves and N2 yield curves over tetragonal zirconia (MZ) at lower temperature were ahead of those over V/star ZrO2 because of the higher V4+ surface content and more active B acid sites associated with an easy formation of the nitrito intermediate.

Ni–Co and Ni–Co/ZrO 2 composite coatings have been synthesized via a single-step direct current (DC) electrodeposition route as a protective coating. The influences of electrodeposition current density, time and ZrO 2 concentration on structural, composition and properties of Ni–Co coating were investigated. All coatings present compact, crack-free and nodular-like morphology in a nanocrystalline structure. Some aggregations still exist in the coating. The preferred orientation of these coatings changed from (200) to (111) texture with a fcc structure . The amount of Co in Ni–Co matrix slightly decreases as current density and time increases. The Co and ZrO 2 content in Ni–Co/ZrO 2 matrix increase with the increasing of ZrO 2 concentration in bath. Less than 60 min is beneficial for low roughness of Ni–Co/ZrO 2 coating. Current density, deposition time and ZrO 2 embedded in metallic matrix affect the hardness of Ni–Co alloy. Ni–Co/ZrO 2 coating has enhanced hardness compared to Ni–Co ones. Although they might not exhibit the best corrosion resistance in the initial immersing stage, Ni–Co/ZrO 2 composite coating obtained at 2 – 4 A dm −2 with 5–10 g L -1 ZrO 2 presents the better corrosion resistance and desirable performance stability during the long-term immersion process in aggressive media. The Ni–Co/ZrO 2 coating exhibits promising advantages as a protective coating.

The (CF x ) n /CaF 2 -ZrO 2 interlaced coating was prepared using electro-jet mask printing technology. The effects of CaF 2 content (0, 25, 50 wt%) on its microstructure, adhesion strength, and wear properties against 304 stainless steel balls at high temperatures (25, 200, 400 °C) were investigated. The results indicated that the interlaced structure of the coating helped prevent the loss of lubricant particles and reduced the actual contact area between the counterparts. The addition of CaF 2 reduced the surface roughness and porosity of the (CF x ) n coating and suppressed thermal weight loss and fatigue peeling of the coating. At 25 °C, the (CF x ) n -ZrO 2 interlaced coating showed the lowest friction coefficient of ∼ 0.13, although the brittle CaF 2 particles hindered lubrication. At 200 °C, the presence of CaF 2 reduced the wear rate of the friction pair. At 400 °C, the interlaced coating with 25 wt% CaF 2 showed the lowest friction coefficient of ∼ 0.29, and both the coating and counterpart had low wear rates. This improvement was primarily attributed to the brittle-to-ductile transition of CaF 2 at high temperatures and the formation of new lubricants. Adhesive wear, oxidative wear, and delamination were the predominant wear mechanisms.

Regulating charge transfer and reaction pathways are effective strategies for boosting photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. Herein, Co 3 O 4 /ZrO 2 mesoporous octahedrons are synthesized through facile pyrolysis of UIO-66@ZIF-67 core/shell octahedrons. The as-obtained Co 3 O 4 /ZrO 2 mesoporous octahedrons are assembled by highly dispersive and small-sized nanoparticles, with 13 nm average particle size and 5.8 nm pore width, leading to a high specific surface area of 43.11 m 2 g −1 . Benefiting from active-site engineering, the charge-transfer kinetics and CO 2 adsorption are successfully enhanced. In addition, density functional theory calculations reveal that ZrO 2 tailors the reaction pathway of CO 2 reduction by promoting CO 2 activation to *CO 2 and intermediate formation (*COOH and *CO), as well as decreasing the energy barrier of the rate-limiting step (*CO→CO). Thus, the Co 3 O 4 /ZrO 2 mesoporous octahedrons afford a turnover frequency of 28.82 h −1 , 16.95-fold larger than pure Co 3 O 4 .

This work reports a novel type of sandwich-like hollow Au-based nanocatalyst, including a TiO2–ZrO2 shell, a hollow CeO2 core and Au nanoparticles of 2–5 nm. Uniform crystal ceria hollow nanostructures were synthesized using a simple one-step hydrothermal method without a template. Then binary TiO2–ZrO2 coated Au nanocatalysts were prepared via a facile bottom-up synthesis method. The structural features of the catalysts were characterized by several techniques, including SEM, TEM, EDX, FTIR, BET, XRD, UV-vis and XPS analyses. Using the reduction of 4-nitrophenol by NaBH4 as a model reaction, the TiO2–ZrO2/Au/CeO2 microspheres showed a superior catalytic activity and thermal stability compared with a pure TiO2 or ZrO2 layer. In addition, TiO2–ZrO2/Au/CeO2 microspheres calcined at 700 °C presented the highest thermal stability and reactivity. These comparative results were mainly attributed to the synergistic effect among the mixed oxide, hollow CeO2 core and Au NPs and the sandwich-like structure. As a consequence, this unique nanocatalyst will open a promising route for the fabrication of hollow binary-metal-oxide materials for future research and has great potential for other applications.

To reinforce the reliability issue brought by excessive interfacial reaction with the dimensional scale-down of electronic device, an electroless Ni–P–ZrO2 (17.5 at.% of P) composite coating was developed as the under bump metallization (UBM) for lead-free solder interconnect. ZrO2 nanoparticles were proved to be homogeneously distributed and helped improve wetting ability of the layer. Both Sn–3.5Ag/Ni–P–ZrO2 and Sn–3.5Ag/Ni–P solder joints were prepared and aged at various conditions to study the interfacial reaction. Growth of intermetallic compounds (IMCs) without serious spalling in solder/Ni–P–ZrO2 joint was slowed down because of the barrier property of incorporation of ZrO2 nanoparticles, which blocked the diffusion of Ni and Cu atoms. Based on the IMC growth, the activation energy of solder/Ni–P–ZrO2 was estimated to be higher than that of plain solder joint. The top-view of IMCs demonstrated a much finer grain size compared with that of solder/Ni–P joint. A reactive diffusion-induced compound formation mechanism was proposed to address the microstructural evolution in detail. Moreover, solder/Ni–P–ZrO2 joint demonstrated higher shear strength than did solder/Ni–P joint for different aging durations. The fracture surface of solder/Ni–P joint after shear test showed ductile transition failure, with big dimples and plastic deformation.

Constructing CuO-based nanofibrous membranes with remarkable mechanical performance, controllable nanostructures, and outstanding catalytic oxidation activity would be conducive to decomposing organic contaminants in wastewater through advanced oxidation processes; however, there remains a huge shortfall of such ceramic membranes that they are usually fragile with poor deformability. Herein, a universal approach was proposed for fabricating flexible CuO nanoparticles-anchored ZrO 2 nanofibrous membranes (CZNMs), that is, through the combination of successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) assembly and the follow-up thermal oxidation processes. Notably, the developed preparation method exhibited strong expansibility, which could be extended to the synthesis of other flexible metal oxides/ceramic nanofibrous composites, such as ZnO/ZrO 2 , CdO/ZrO 2 , and Mn 3 O 4 /ZrO 2 . Profiting from the integrated advantages of superior catalytic reactivity, uniform nanostructures distribution, and excellent mechanical properties, the resultant CZNMs displayed a prominent degradation efficiency of 92.4% within 50 min towards tetracycline hydrochloride under the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Furthermore, the stable hierarchical structures and robust mechanical performance endow the as-synthesized membranes with extraordinary reusability and easy recycling. The successful preparation of such ceramic-based nanofibrous membranes with superior flexibility and high-efficient catalytic performance might provide some reference to develop other synergetic membranous catalysts for wastewater treatment.

Nanocrystalline Ni–Mo and Ni–Mo–ZrO 2 coatings were designed and successfully fabricated via electrodeposition process in direct current mode. Impacts of molybdate and ZrO 2 nanoparticles , cathodic current density ( i c ) on surface, structure and performance of Ni–Mo alloy were analyzed. Electrochemical behaviors were evaluated by electrochemical impedance method in sodium chloride solution. A more compact and consistent surface morphology was prepared by introducing molybdate in nickel. Grain sizes of Ni–Mo alloy decreased as molybdate increased from 2 to 6 g L −1 , and enlarged as i c increased. After incorporation of ZrO 2 , the grains initially decreased to 12 nm and later increased to 18 nm. The structure of the deposit is a face-centered cubic phase. With the increase of molybdate content, the preferential Ni (220) crystal plane was changed to oriented (111) plane. The Ni–Mo alloy comprises 91 wt% Ni and 5.4 wt% Mo. R a of Ni–Mo–ZrO 2 was 73 ± 4 nm. Ni–Mo alloys obtained at 20 mA cm −2 and 2 g L −1 molybdate possess the best corrosion-resistant behavior. Incorporation of ZrO 2 can strengthen electrochemical stability and anti-wear behavior of Ni–Mo alloy. The inclusion of ZrO 2 refined the grain size from 18 to 12 nm. The Ni–Mo/ZrO 2 coatings electrodeposited under 2–4 g L −1 Na 2 MoO 4 ·2H 2 O, 20–40 mA cm −2 , 10–15 g L −1 ZrO 2 have excellent wear and corrosion resistance.

In the context of the escalating global water scarcity issue and the growing awareness of environmental protection, the purification and decontamination of wastewater from different sources have become of utmost necessity. This study was dedicated to fabricating a material capable of effectively mitigating membrane contamination for oil-water separation applications. A superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobicitic cerium oxide/zirconia composite coating (CeO 2 /ZrO 2 ) was synthesized on a stainless-steel substrate by the sol-gel method. The distinctive rough network structure of the coating enables a water contact angle of 0° and an underwater oil contact angle as high as 169°. The coating not only effectively segregates various oil-water mixtures but also transcends the service life limitations associated with traditional ceramic membranes. Upon 80 min of visible light irradiation, the contact angle of this coating diminishes from 58° to 15°, signifying its self-cleaning ability. It can be considered that this durable and easily repairable coating has a promising application prospect in the field of oil-water separation.
