Valorization of abundant biomass-derived cellulose into initial platform chemicals (IPCs) generally suffers from low process efficiency due to the difficulty in dissolution of recalcitrant cellulose that owns complex inter‐/intra-molecular hydrogen-bond network in structure. Herein, a coupled strategy of formylation-driven cellulose dissolution and regeneration is successfully established to break the trade-off between process efficiency and concentration barrier for reliable production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), an important IPC, from high-loading cellulose. This strategy initiates from the formylation of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) in an anhydrous deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of zinc bromide (ZnBr 2 ) and formic acid (FA), which allows the deconstruction of pristine hydrogen-bond network and re-construction to formylated cellulose (FC) with a maximum formyl substitution of 1.67. The subsequent regeneration of FC from water or ethanol causes the transformation of cellulose from type I to type II with smaller polymerization degree and crystallinity, thereby enabling the improvement of solubility and reactivity of regenerated FC (RFC) in water for the subsequent AlCl 3 -catalyzed conversion to HMF. A distinguished space-time yield of 231.1 g·L −1 ·h −1 with a high HMF yield of 63.9 mol% has been achieved from RFC (25.0 wt % in water phase) in a low-boiling biphasic 1,4-dioxane/NaCl-H 2 O solvent, which is so far the highest process efficiency achieved in cellulose-to-HMF conversion. It exemplifies an advance in high-efficient production of IPCs from renewable cellulose feedstock by breaking the concentration barrier for future biomass refinery.

Thermochromic hydrogels have attracted considerable interest for their potential use in smart windows and information encryption. Nonetheless, it remains a challenge to achieve flexible and adjustable multilevel phase transitions through simple strategies. In this study, a thermoresponsive composite hydrogel with tunable upper critical solution temperature (UCST) and lower critical solution temperature (LCST) was developed by introducing sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) into a cross-linked polyacrylamide (PAM) network via a one-pot synthesis approach. CMC not only changed the phase transition temperature, but also greatly improved the mechanical properties, anti-freezing and dimensional stability of the hydrogel. The hydrogel smart window exhibited excellent sunlight modulation capabilities and effective infrared shielding effects (T lum ≈ 90.24 %,ΔT solar,25–2°C = 66.88 %,ΔT solar,25–40°C = 80.81 %), which could simultaneously meet the needs of indoor lighting and energy saving during the daytime, as well as the need for privacy at night. Furthermore, multiple encryption of QR code information and temperature monitoring were realized by combining the hydrogels with different phase transition temperatures. This strategy provides an innovative route to fabricate thermochromic cellulose hydrogels and expands their application in the field of smart materials.

Following the main idea of a two-step method, microcrystalline cellulose is firstly pretreated to prepare regenerated cellulose (RC) with low crystallinity. Then, RC is continuously hydrolyzed to sugar in aqueous system by microwave driving. With the establishment of ZrO 2 contained low acid catalytic system, an advanced route driven by microwave radiation to induce highly efficient hydrolysis of RC to sugar is formed. Due to the effect of ZrO 2 on the molecular chain of cellulose, the recrystallization of RC is obviously weakened, and higher hydrolysis reactivity is achieved. Under the optimal conditions, the average conversion of RC and the yield of total reducing sugar highly reach 98.4 ± 0.5% and 97.9 ± 0.6%, respectively. The result is extremely superior to the efficiency of hydrolysis initiated only by pure acid. As a result, a novel and simple thinking to establish an advanced two-step methodology to hydrolyze cellulose to sugar with high efficiency is achieved.

The generation of electricity from water, which contains enormous amounts of energy, has attracted significant attention in recent years. However, the development of devices consisting of materials with the required mechanical stability, suitable structures, and wide ion concentration gradients for operation in direct contact with water remains challenging. Herein, we report the preparation of three-dimensional foam structures based on covalent cross-linking and freeze-drying using cellulose and chitosan derivatives as raw materials. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which served as the photothermal component, were uniformly dispersed among the cellulose nanofiber (CNF) to realize photothermally enhanced heterogeneous water-enabled electricity generation (HWEG). The output performance of the assembled HWEG was improved by tailoring the ion concentration gradient and widening the moisture gradient induced by photothermal conversion. Under solar irradiation of 1 sun, the HWEG delivered an open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current of 186 mV and 0.5 μA, respectively. Owing to the scalability and practicality of the device, the class of three-dimensional structural materials based on sustainable biomass developed in this study is suitable for use in hydrovoltaic energy harvesters.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) have attracted great attention due to their excellent physical properties, abundant functional groups, and extensive use in many fields. However, how to facilely and efficiently prepare CNC and utilize the cellulosic raw materials comprehensively are still major challenges. Herein, a comprehensive utilization strategy of cellulose is implemented by facile, high-yield, controllable CNC preparation and effective enzymatic hydrolysis of the cellulosic residue. CNC with a mixed crystal form of cellulose I and cellulose II was successfully prepared through the partial dissolution of cellulose in an aqueous tetrabutylphosphonium hydroxide (TBPH) solution under mild conditions followed by regeneration, short-term ultrasonic dispersion, resulting in a high CNC yield of up to 72.2%, high crystallinity of up to 72.1%, and tunable dimensions and crystal structure of CNC. The characterization results confirmed that the present method produced a nonderivative form of cellulose and changed its crystalline structure to varying degrees, and CNC exhibited thermal stability comparable to that of the raw materials. A partial dissolution/regeneration/ultrasonic dispersion mechanism was proposed for this CNC preparation process. Cellulose residue obtained from the CNC production process led to a high enzymatic hydrolysis rate of up to 89.1%, which was twice as high as that of the raw material. The overall process finally resulted in a comprehensive cellulose utilization rate of more than 95%. The present strategy provides a candidate approach for the comprehensive utilization of cellulose through the synchronous production of advanced high-performance materials and fine chemicals.

In this study, we report a novel, facile, and green method that was used for creating a new all-cellulose composite (ACC) based on inorganic molten salt solvent. Three representatively native fibers from softwood ( Pinus kesiya ), hardwood ( Eucalyptus globulus ), and agricultural straw ( Zea mays ) were selected to verify the effect of the method. The welded sheets were thoroughly characterized and compared. Cellulose sheets from the pine exhibited excellent mechanical properties (σb 16.94 MPa) and thermal stability (T max 265 °C) after the welding process, while the corn stalk sheets displayed more robust and thermostable features than the eucalyptus. The welding technique using inorganic metal salt hydrate provides a promising and convenient route to obtain firm sheet-materials with micro- or nano-structures from nature fibers.

Abstract Applications of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) in various fields of high value have been and are being widely studied. However, research about the fundamental preparation method has come to a standstill. This work aims to introduce a concept of progressive dissolution of cellulosic fibers and an eco-friendly way of preparing CNCs. By controlling TBAH concentration, the amphiphilicity and dissolving capability of TBAH/H 2 O can be regulated. Through a controlled partial dissolution of cellulose in the solvent, aqueous tetra-butylammonium hydroxide (TBAH), the fiber can be dissolved to make nanoscale particles (CNC suspensions). Polarized light microscopy provides a quantitative evaluation of the progress of dissolution, by which a processing window (43% TBAH/H 2 O, 30 min dissolution at room temperature) for preparing CNCs from cotton pulp has been determined. The multiscale cellulose products, including micron-scale, nanoscale, and well-dissolved products of cellulose, have been separated with the assistance of the derivatization process. There are interestingly homogeneous materials of cellulose I with a needle-like shape in the nanoscale products extracted. Furthermore, the cellulose raw materials can be extended from cotton pulp to wood pulp, bamboo pulp, straw pulp, and microcrystalline cellulose, indicating it to be a universal method. Analysis of XRD patterns of the raw and CNCs indicates that amorphous and less-crystalline cellulose can be precisely and controllably dissolved by the solvent, leaving CNCs. Graphical abstract

Phase change fibers (PCFs), incorporating with diverse phase change materials (PCMs) such as paraffin wax (PW), have been recognized as one of the effective strategies for fabricate smart thermoregulatory textiles. However, some fatal defects exist in traditional paraffin-cellulose-based PCFs, including the paraffin leakage and the low fiber strength. In this work, we herein propose a facile method to prepare uniform and stable paraffin emulsions stabilized by cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), followed by a simple coaxial wet spinning to develop smart and robust cellulose-based PCFs for human body temperature management. Benefiting from the CNF-reinforced encapsulation, the stability of paraffin capsules and the compatibility of cellulose and paraffin are indeed promoted, thus allowing the cellulose-based PCF with excellent mechanical strength, leakage prevention, and thermal regulation. As a result, the as-prepared PCF, namely CNF 1 -PE/PW with optimal 1 wt% CNF 1 loading, features a high tensile stress of 10.95 MPa at a strain of 111.2 % and a phase-change enthalpy value of 140.24 J/g with a slight paraffin leakage rate of 0.9 %. Moreover, the corresponding wearable fabric exhibits an excellent thermal storage and release recyclability even after 50 cycles. Therefore, this study provides a new idea for the development of intelligent cellulose-based phase change fiber materials.

The rising contamination of water resources by levofloxacin (LEV) requires advanced remediation strategies that exceed the capabilities of the conventional methods. This study reports the rational design of a novel, multi-functional cellulose-phytic acid/Fe-MoS 2 (cellulose-PA/Fe-MoS 2 ) hybrid composite for the highly efficient removal of LEV via synergistic adsorption and photocatalysis. Cellulose served as sustainable substrate and phytic acid acted as a natural cross-linker to enhance the integration and distribution of Fe-MoS 2 onto cellulose substrate. This designed architecture results in enhanced hydrophilicity, minimized MoS 2 aggregation, and a maximized density of active sites, as confirmed by comprehensive characterization (SEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS, BET, LC-MS, EPR). The prepared composite demonstrated exceptional, temperature-dependent LEV adsorption capacities of up to 210.97 mg/g (95%) within 40 min, with kinetics and isotherms best described by pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, indicative of chemisorption. The adsorption mechanism driven by a combination of electrostatic attraction, π–π stacking, hydrogen bonding, and coordination complexation, resulting in effective removal across a broad pH range (3−10). The cellulose-PA/Fe-MoS 2 exhibited photocatalytic effect, achieving efficient degradation of levofloxacin (LEV) (98.5%) within short time (15 mins) into small molecules (CO 2 , H 2 O, NH 3 , NO 3 , F, …etc.) as confirmed with LC-MS, driven primarily by reactive species (•O 2 − , •OH, h + ). In addition, it was demonstrated good recyclability, maintaining high performance over five consecutive cycles. These findings suggest that the designed cellulose-PA/Fe-MoS 2 composite could be used as a green and sustainable multifunctional material to simultaneously remove and degrade antibiotics from water environments.

Parent and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs and OPAHs) pose a threat to public health; however, few studies have reported strategies to mitigate their formation during baking, particularly for OPAHs. This study aimed to inhibit the formation of PAHs and OPAHs in baking systems using myricetin (Myr)-loaded ethyl cellulose (EC)/carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) nanoparticles. The nanoparticles improved the water solubility and antioxidant activity of Myr. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the binding affinities followed the order: EC-Myr > CMC-Myr > EC-CMC. In baking systems, the nanoparticles effectively reduced the concentrations of 24 PAHs and 12 OPAHs, exhibiting stronger inhibitory effects than free myricetin. GC–MS/MS and electron paramagnetic resonance analyses revealed that CMC and Myr synergistically suppressed PAHs and OPAHs formation by reducing intermediates and unsaturated carbon-centered radicals. Overall, this study first provided a novel approach to reducing the concentrations of PAHs and OPAHs and their associated health risks in baking systems.

Cellulose has the advantages of renewability and degradability, while cellulose’s rigid structure and hydrogen bonding limit its dissolution and application. Low-temperature alkali/urea solvents offer a green, low-cost solution but suffer from low solubility, high coagulation costs, and poor fiber strength. In this work, to address these problems, the high specific surface area and surface-rich hydroxyl groups of nano-SiO2 powders were used to modify the low-temperature alkali/urea solvent system. There are two alkali/urea solvent systems: LiOH/urea has better solubility but expensive and NaOH/urea is cheap but of less solubility. In the LiOH/urea system, it was found that the solubility of cellulose could be increased by 60.1% by addition of nano-SiO2 powder, and the gel temperature of the solution remained basically unchanged. By using the phytic acid coagulation system, the strength and elongation of regenerated cellulose fibers could reach 547.6 MPa and 18.7%, respectively. More importantly, in the low-cost NaOH/urea system, nano-SiO2 boosts solubility by 45.2%, regenerated cellulose fibers with 404 MPa strength, and 20.18% elongation by using the H2SO4/Na2SO4 coagulation system. Finally, the mechanism of action of nano-SiO2 is revealed, which provides a new idea for green dissolution and the high-performance regeneration of cellulose.

Surface modification of the magnetic cellulose particles has been conducted by using AEAPS, the modified magnetic cellulose particles were then used for the immobilization of lipase for catalysis reaction. The highest specific activity for AEAPS modified magnetic cellulose scaffold was increased to about 30 fold that of the free lipase without support. Furthermore, the reusability of the immobilized lipase on AEAPS modified magnetic cellulose particles was also improved, the relative activity of the ARCM-2 and AMRCM1-2 after being reused for 5 times still remained 72.8% and 71.2%, respectively. Moreover, the immobilized lipase on AEAPS modified magnetic cellulose particles was easily recovered without significant decrease in the specific activity. The immobilization of lipase on AEAPS modified magnetic cellulose particles led to the improvement in stability of activity and reusability for non-aqueous transesterification.
