For practical analysis and simultaneous detection of arbutin (AR) and hydrochinone (HQ) in cosmetics, an electrochemical sensor has been designed based on nitrogen and sulfur co-doped Fe–Ni alloy (N,S-FeNi 3 /C) nanoparticles. The N,S-FeNi 3 /C has been prepared for the first time via hydrothermal synthesis and high-temperature carbonization. N,S-FeNi 3 /C not only improves the charge transfer to the surface, but also provides rich active sites and fast ion diffusion rates owing to the iron and nickel bimetallic materials. In addition, the d-band structure of transition metals (nickel and iron) introduced by the N and S atoms exhibits an electronic structure similar to that of noble metal catalysts, thus enhancing electrocatalytic activity and increasing conductivity. Additionally, the double doping of S and N atoms significantly increases the active sites of carbon atoms; thus, N-S-FeNi3/C exhibits excellent electrochemical catalytic activity for the oxidation of AR and HQ. Further, the N,S-FeNi 3 /C sensor is used for the simultaneous determination of HQ and AR by square-wave pulse voltammetry. Distinct oxidation peaks of HQ and AR are observed at potentials of +0.028 V and +0.352 V (vs. SCE). The electrical signal increases linearly in the HQ concentration ranges of 0.1–100 μM and 0.05–70 μM for the simultaneous determination of AR and HQ with a detection limit as low as 0.0476 and 0.0135 μM (S/N = 3), respectively. Thus, rapid and accurate detection of AR and HQ in spiked cosmetics is successfully achieved, with a recovery ranging from 96.4 to 104.2%, and the relative standard deviation is lower than 3.8–4.0%. Herein, the copper-based metal organic framework (CuBDC) modified with MoO3 nanorods uniformly distributed on its surface (MoO3@CuBDC) was synthesized by a one-step solvothermal method, and then was treated with high temperature calcination. A series of characterizations demonstrate that MoO3@CuBDC was transformed into a ternary composite of Cu2O nanospheres, Mo2C, and carbon material (Cu2O/Mo2C@C) after the treatment. Moreover, a novel electrochemical sensor based on Cu2O/Mo2C@C modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was constructed for simultaneous sensitive detection of catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ). Due to the excellent electrocatalytic ability of Cu2O/Mo2C@C, the prepared sensor exhibits good electroanalytical performance, which shows good linearity in the concentration ranges of 0.50–200.00 μM for CC and HQ with the limits of detection of 0.38 μM and 0.13 μM. In addition, this sensor can be used to detect CC and HQ simultaneously in real samples with satisfactory results.

Hydroquinone (HQ) poses immeasurable risk to human health and the natural environment on the grounds of high toxicity of organic phenolic compounds. Herein, an innovative electrochemical sensor based on two-dimensional nickel molybdate nanowires (NiMoO 4 NWs) is constructed for the ultra-sensitive determination of HQ, which can provide useful reference for the human health and environment protection. Two-dimensional NiMoO 4 NWs are prepared successfully through a facile hydrothermal reaction and annealing process. The obtained two-dimensional NiMoO 4 NWs are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) mapping and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The accurate contents of Ni and Mo have been characterized by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), confirming that the lower content of the nickel in NiMoO 4 NWs possesses the higher catalytic activity of HQ. Under the optimized conditions, the constructed HQ sensor exhibits satisfactory electrocatalytic activity with a low detection limit of 0.0355 μmol/L ( S/N = 3), a wide linear range of 0.05–4600 μmol/L and sensitivity of 170.064 μA/(mmol cm 2 ). The sensor has been successfully applied to the detection of HQ in rainwater, tap water, domestic sewage and drinking water samples with satisfactory recovery. At the same time, this sensor has excellent reproducibility, selectivity, and stability. The constructed sensor has potential practical application value and broad application prospect in human health and environmental monitoring.

The transition element based N-doped carbon nanoparticles (NPs) with high catalytic activity and more active centers are regards as nanozymes with great potential for colorimetric detection and environmental degradation. Here, three-dimensional (3D) hierarchically porous of manganese-amplified Fe-N-doped carbon (Fe/Mn-N-C) catalysts with more Fe/Mn-N 4 and C-N active groups was synthesized via pyrolysis of manganese(II) acetyllacetonate/ferrocene@ZIF-8 nanocomposites . Owing to its excellent peroxidase-like (POD-like) and superoxide (SOD) mimicking properties, the Fe/Mn-N-C nanozymes were selected to rapid and accurate colorimetric detection of hydroquinone (HQ), and the detection limit was determined as 0.21 μM in range of 0–100 μM. In addition, the rapid degradation of HQ via hydroxyl radical (•OH) and superoxide anion (O 2 •- ) generated between Fe/Mn-N-C nanozymes and H 2 O 2 , and the degradation efficiency reached to over 92% under the optimum reaction conditions (pH 4.0, 100 mM H 2 O 2 ). The reaction mechanisms were systematically explored. The manganese-amplified Fe-N-C single atom nanozyme with excellent enzyme-like activity and chemical stability will propose a feasible way for accurate detection and removal of pollutants in actual production.

Development of nanomaterials with multienzyme-like activities (nanozymes) via a simple way has attracted paramounting attention. Generally, enzymatic activity is closely related to the size, surface state, material type, etc. Bimetallic oxides are very appealing owing to their mixed valence and structural advantages. Herein, we reported an eco-friendly strategy to synthesize Co 1.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 nanozyme via sol-gel method. This nanozyme functionally mimics four major enzymes, i.e. laccase, peroxidase (POD), oxidase (OXD), and catalase (CAT). Accordingly, a colorimetric sensing platform was designed to distinguish isomers of organic pollutants ‒catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ) by using Co 1.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 as the sole catalyst. In particular, laccase-like activity of Co 1.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 enables it to directly oxidize CC into yellow o -benzoquinone with good linearity in the range of 1∼1000 μM and a detection limit of 0.35 μM. Meanwhile, HQ can discolor the oxidized substrate that was pre-oxidized with the aid of oxidase-like activity of the nanozyme (linear range: 0.05∼100 μM, detection limit: 0.04 μM). The established colorimetric method has been successfully utilized for selective sensing of CC, HQ in water samples with good selectivity and high sensitivity. Our study contributes to green synthesis of metal-based nanomaterials with multi-enzyme mimicking activities and uncovers new usage of nanozyme in discriminating of environmental pollutants.

A ternary hybrid composed of molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs@MoS 2 -rGO) was prepared and used for voltammetric detection of hydroquinone (HQ), catechol (CC) or resorcinol (RC). The composition and structure of the hybrid were characterized in detail. The electrochemical behaviors of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with the hybrid towards the oxidation of HQ, CC, and RC were investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The results revealed 3D MoS 2 is active for the catalytic oxidation of these isomers. Additional integration with rGO and AuNPs further improves catalysis due to their synergistic interaction. The enhanced catalysis leads to oxidation of HQ, CC and RC at 0.074 V, 0.178 V, and 0.527 V (vs. Ag/AgCl; by CV) with reduced overpotential (20-100 mV) and 8-fold or 3-fold increased peak current compared to those obtained on MoS 2 /GCE, or MoS 2 -rGO/GCE, respectively. Selective detection of one isomer in the presence of the other two was realized by DPV. The linear ranges are 0.1–950 μM, 3–560 μM, and 40–960 μM for HQ, CC, and RC, and the detection limits are 0.04 μM, 0.95 μM, and 14.6 μM, respectively. The sensor also shows good selectivity and displays satisfactory recovery for real sample analysis.
Schematic illustration of the preparation of AuNPs@MoS 2 -rGO hybrid by hydrothermal growth of MoS 2 -rGO and subsequent electrodeposition of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), and its application for selective detection of hydroquinone, catechol and resorcinol by voltammetry.

β-Glucosidase is associated with many diseases, so it is important to be able to accurately determine β-glucosidase activity. Here, we describe a turn-on fluorescence method for sensitively determining β-glucosidase activity. The method involves the formation of water-soluble fluorescent polymer nanoparticles. β-Glucosidase initially hydrolyzes the β-arbutin substrate to release hydroquinone (1,4-dihydroxybenzene). The hydroquinone then forms cross-links between branched polyethylenimine molecules to give fluorescent water-soluble polymer nanoparticles. The polymer nanoparticles were found to fluoresce with excitation and emission peaks at 373 and 510 nm, respectively, and the fluorescence intensity was related to the β-glucosidase activity. The fluorescence intensity could therefore be used to determine the β-glucosidase activity. The lowest β-glucosidase activity that could be determined was 0.4 U L–1, and the dynamic linear range was 1.0–36.0 U L–1. The method was very selective for β-glucosidase activity and was not sensitive to other proteins. The method was successfully used to determine β-glucosidase in spiked samples containing human serum albumin at a concentration of 0.5%, and the recoveries were 95.2%–104.5%.

Experimental liquid–liquid equilibria (LLE) data for ternary (methyl propyl ketone + hydroquinone + water) and (methyl propyl ketone + resorcinol + water) systems were determined under atmospheric pressure at T = 298.15, 318.15, and 333.15 K. Distribution coefficients and separation factors were calculated to evaluate extraction effectiveness. Hand, Bachman, and Othmer–Tobias equations were utilized to confirm consistency of experimental LLE data. Thermodynamic NRTL and UNIQUAC models were used to correlate experimental LLE data, and corresponding binary interaction parameters were obtained. The estimated data from the two models agree well with experimental LLE data. The NRTL model gives a better agreement than the UNIQUAC model for ternary (methyl propyl ketone + hydroquinone or resorcinol + water) systems.

The RGO/AuNPs/CS/ZnTCPP nanocomposites were successfully prepared with reduced graphene oxide (RGO) loaded with Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) existed in chitosan (CS) and water-soluble zinc meso-tetra (4-carboxylphenyl) porphyrin (ZnTCPP) by π-π nanoassembly method and were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), 1 H NMR spectra and UV–vis absorption spectroscopy. The most important advantage of the RGO/AuNPs/CS/ZnTCPP nanocomposites was environmentally friendly. Indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode surface was modified with the RGO/AuNPs/CS/ZnTCPP nanocomposites exhibited a good photocurrent response at −0.2 V under whitelight of Xenon lamp illumination. The photocurrent response could be greatly increased by adding hydroquinone (HQ) to the solution. Electrons of ZnTCPP were excited from HOMO to LUMO by irradiating light. The photoexcited electrons injected into the RGO , and then transferred to AuNPs further to the ITO. Addition of HQ resulted in the enhanced photocurrent signal by acting as a sacrificial electron donor ; Thereby scavenged the photogenerated holes of the excited ZnTCPP and oxidized to benzoquinone (BQ). Based on the above interaction, detection of HQ was developed by a novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor (S/N = 3) with a linear range from 5 to 300 nmol/L (r = 0.997) and detection limit of 0.5 nmol/L. Proposed biosensor is simple, rapid and this was successfully applied for the quantification HQ in the real sample matrices.

A polydopamine (PDA)-reduced graphene oxide (RGO) nanocomposite was prepared by a one-step procedure and was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The characterizations confirm the successful reduction of graphene oxide to RGO in the PDA-RGO nanocomposite. The application of PDA-RGO nanocomposite in simultaneous determination of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) was investigated. The Δ E p between HQ and CC was 103 mV, which was wide enough to discriminate the dihydroxybenzene isomers. The peak current of HQ was linear to its concentration in the range of 1.0 × 10 −6 to 2.3 × 10 −4 M and the peak current of CC was linear to its concentration in the range of 1.0 × 10 −6 to 2.5 × 10 −4 M.

The development of metal-based redox nanozymes represents a new frontier in pollutant sensing. In this field, designing highly active nanozymes and precisely regulating their enzymatic activity are key challenges. In this work, we report the construction of a copper peroxide@polydopamine (CuO2@PDA) nanozyme with dual enzyme-like activity, mimicking the active centers of laccase and peroxidase. Here, CuO2 acts as the catalytic center, while PDA serves as a carrier to prevent CuO2 aggregation and promotes conversion of CuII/CuI active sites via the reduction effect of its surface catechol groups to complete the catalytic cycle. As expected, the obtained CuO2@PDA nanozyme exhibits significant laccase- and peroxidase-mimetic activities. Moreover, its dual enzymatic activity can be systematically switched by adjusting pH and temperature. Specifically, laccase activity dominates near neutral pH, while CuO2 decomposition into Cu ions and H2O2 at acidic pH triggers peroxidase activity. Similarly, CuO2@PDA exhibits temperature-dependent dual enzymatic activity with peroxidase activity prevailing at low temperatures and laccase activity at high temperatures. According to enzymatic performance and XPS results, a possible catalytic mechanism of the dual enzymatic activity of CuO2@PDA has been proposed. Then, based on the pH-dependent dual enzymatic activity of CuO2@PDA, we constructed a detection system for the isomers of organic pollutants, catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ). The laccase-like activity of CuO2@PDA enables direct oxidation of CC into yellow o-benzoquinone, while HQ discolors the preoxidized substrate generated via the peroxidase-like activity of CuO2@PDA. Moreover, selective sensing for CC and HQ with high sensitivity was achieved in real water samples. This approach can guide the design of nanozymes with multienzymatic activity and unveil their potential uses in environmental pollutant discrimination.
