Bioinspired Engineering towards Tailoring Advanced Lignin/Rubber Elastomers

Haixu Wang,Weifeng Liu,Jinhao Huang,Dongjie Yang,Xueqing Qiu

The pursuit of high volume and high value-added applications for lignin has been a long-term challenge. In this work, inspired by the energy sacrificial mechanism from biological materials, we developed high-performance lignin/carbon black (CB)/nitrile rubber (NBR) elastomers by constructing a dual-crosslinking network consisting of sulfur covalent bonds and dynamic coordination sacrificial bonds. Lignin was not only used for the substitution of half mass of CB in the NBR elastomer but also served as natural ligands for the Zn-based coordination bonds, providing a significant synergistic coordination enhancement effect. The mechanical performance of the elastomers can be easily manipulated by adjusting the proportion of non-permanent coordination bonds and permanent covalent bonds. Lignin/CB/NBR elastomers with a higher strength and modulus than CB-filled elastomers were obtained while maintaining excellent elasticity. The thermal stability and the high-temperature oil resistance of NBR elastomers were also improved by incorporation of lignin and metal coordination bonds. Overall, this work inspires a new solution for the design of high-performance lignin/rubber elastomers with a high lignin loading content.

Nanomechanics of Lignin–Cellulase Interactions in Aqueous Solutions

Peitao Zheng,Li Xiang,Jian Chang,Qiaojia Lin,Lei Xie,Tu Lan,Jing Liu,Zhenggang Gong,Tian Tang,Li Shuai,Xiaolin Luo,Nairong Chen,Hongbo Zeng

Efficient enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose in lignocellulose to glucose is one of the most critical steps for the production of biofuels. The nonproductive adsorption of lignin to expensive cellulase highly impedes the development of biorefinery. Understanding the lignin–cellulase interaction mechanism serves as a vital basis for reducing such nonproductive adsorption in their practical applications. Yet, limited report is available on the direct characterization of the lignin–cellulase interactions. Herein, for the first time, the nanomechanics of the biomacromolecules including lignin, cellulase, and cellulose were systematically investigated by using a surface force apparatus (SFA) at the nanoscale in aqueous solutions. Interestingly, a cation−π interaction was discovered and demonstrated between lignin and cellulase molecules through SFA measurements with the addition of different cations (Na+, K+, etc.). The complementary adsorption tests and theoretical calculations further confirmed the validity of the force measurement results. This finding further inspired the investigation of the interaction between lignin and other noncatalytic-hydrolysis protein (i.e., soy protein). Soy protein was demonstrated as an effective, biocompatible, and inexpensive lignin-blocker based on the molecular force measurements through the combined effects of electrostatic, cation−π, and hydrophobic interactions, which significantly improved the enzymatic hydrolysis efficiencies of cellulose in pretreated lignocellulosic substrates. Our results offer quantitative information on the fundamental understanding of the lignin–cellulase interaction mechanism. Such unraveled nanomechanics provides new insights into the development of advanced biotechnologies for addressing the nonproductive adsorption of lignin to cellulase, with great implications on improving the economics of lignocellulosic biorefinery.

Continuous hydrodeoxygenation of lignin derived phenolics to cycloalkanes

Bingshuo Li,Haonan Wang,Tianhua Yang,Haijun Zhang,Giuseppe Pipitone,Xingping Kai,Rundong Li

Lignin, a major constituent of lignocellulosic biomass, holds significant potential as a renewable feedstock for advanced biofuel production. However, the bio-oil derived from lignin often suffers from poor thermal stability, limiting its direct application as a fuel. Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is an essential upgrading process that selectively removes oxygen from lignin-derived bio-oil, converting it into high-quality hydrocarbon fuels. This study investigates the continuous HDO of representative phenolic compounds (phenol and 4-ethylphenol) using a Ni/h-BN catalyst for cycloalkane production in a fixed-bed reactor. The effects of various operational parameters on product distribution and catalyst stability were systematically evaluated. Under optimized conditions, a phenol conversion of 87.6% with 86.6% selectivity to cyclohexane was achieved. Similarly, 4-ethylphenol exhibited a conversion of 78% and 75.2% selectivity to ethylcyclohexane. In a co-feeding experiment, the conversion of phenol and 4-ethylphenol reached 78.1% and 76.2%, with cyclohexane and ethylcyclohexane selectivities of 84% and 81%, respectively. Notably, the catalyst demonstrated stable performance over 8 h of continuous operation, maintaining conversions above 75% and cycloalkane selectivities exceeding 81%. The product distribution containing both aromatic hydrocarbons and cycloalkanes, indicates that the direct deoxygenation pathway predominated under the evaluated conditions.

Fractionated lignin as a polyol in polyurethane fabrication

Changgeng Li,Huiqi Jin,Minjie Hou,Xu Guo,Tianyuan Xiao,Xinyu Cao,Wenchao Jia,Pedram Fatehi,Haiqiang Shi

The main purpose of this paper was to systematically evaluate the effect of lignin, which was fractioned by green solvents into different molecular weights and used as polyol in the production of polyurethane foams (PUF). The results indicated that the foams prepared with the lower molecular weight lignin had uniform and complete pore structure and improved the mechanical strength . However, the higher molecular weight fraction lignin improved the density and thermal stability of the foam more significantly at the expense of inferior mechanical strength and pore structure deficiency. When the substitution degree of lignin in the PUF was 2 %–30 %, 99.13 % of the lowest molecular weight lignin was participated in the reaction to produce PUF, which improved the elongation at break (Eb) and tensile strength (Ts) of PUF to 834 % and 0.90 MPa, respectively. Also, thermal stability and the amount of unreacted lignin in PUF were increased at a higher substitution degree of lignin in PUF.

Highly conductive and porous lignin-derived carbon fibers

Guosheng Jia,Yan Yu,Xuefen Wang,Chao Jia,Zexu Hu,Senlong Yu,Hengxue Xiang,Meifang Zhu

Bio-based carbon fibers derived from lignin have gained significant attention due to their diverse and renewable sources, ease of extraction, and low cost. However, the current limitations of low specific surface area and insufficient electrical conductivity hinder the widespread application of lignin-derived carbon fibers (LCFs). In this work, highly conductive and porous LCFs are developed through melt-blowing, pretreatment, and carbonization processes. The effects of the carbonization temperature and heating rate on the structures and properties of the LCFs are systematically investigated. The resultant LCFs exhibit high electrical conductivity (71 400 S m−1) and a large specific surface area (923 m2 g−1). The assembled lithium-ion battery based on the LCF anodes demonstrates a long cycle life of >800 cycles and a high specific capacity of 466 mA h g−1. The findings of this study hold practical significance for promoting the utilization of lignin in the fields of energy storage, adsorption, and beyond.

PDMS/magnetic lignin sponge for oil/water separation

Yu-Qing Zhang,Qing-Da An,Zuo-Yi Xiao,Kai-Ruo Zhu,Xiao-Ling Dong,Shang-Ru Zhai

Recyclable, non-toxic, and degradable biological substrates contribute significantly to super-wetting surfaces. In this work, we prepared magnetic micro-nano super-hydrophobic surfaces through a robust solution with magnetic modified lignin particles as the supporting structure. A novel PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane)/magnetic lignin particle (lignin@Fe 3 O 4 )/PDA sponge composite was fabricated. Through dopamine (DA) self-polymerization, covalent deposition of magnetic lignin (ML), and PDMS silane modification, the magnetic super-hydrophobic polyurethane sponge composite (Sponge-P) was synthesized so that the Fe 3 O 4 nanoscale microspheres wrapped with microscale lignin magnetic particles adhered to the sponge surface tighter and were barely dislodged. The as-prepared Sponge-P displayed excellent flexibility and a water contact angle of up to 152.2°. The super-hydrophobic sponge prepared with the proposed method was acid-base stable (pH = 2–12), self-cleaning, and suitable for high-salinity seawater. The magnetic super-hydrophobic sponge has good oil-water separation ability and can absorb 43 times its own weight of oil. In the meantime, due to the introduction of magnetic materials into lignin, we not only constructed micro-nanostructures to improve the surface super-hydrophobicity, but also made Sponge-P have the function of magnetic recovery, which has a unique advantage in treating oily wastewater.

Synthesis and photoinitiation properties of lignin model compounds

Yujie Qi,Xing Huang,Haoqi Zhai,Mengquan Shi,Yuxi Zhang,Yunlong Zhang,Yuxia Zhao

Lignin could generate active free radicals under light irradiation and be directly used as photoinitiator (PI). However, the photoinitiation unit is unclear due to its complex molecular structure. Some previous studies indicate that the photoyellowing of lignin is due to the photosensitivity of Cα‑carbonyl β-O-4 unit in its molecular structure. Herein, four lignin model compounds D2 , S3 , G4 and F4 containing Cα‑carbonyl β-O-4 structure unit were synthesized and characterized. Among them, F4 was obtained by introducing co-initiator 4-(dimethylamino) benzoic acid ethyl ester (EDAB) to the lignin structural unit. The results demonstrated that under 365 nm LED irradiation, the four model compounds all could directly initiate the polymerization of acrylate monomer PEGDA but their photoinitiation efficiency was quite different. F4 exhibited the best photoinitiation performance compared with the other three PIs. As a one-component photoinitiator (PI), the photoinitiation efficiency of F4 was equal to that of a commercial two-component system benzophenone (BP)/EDAB. In addition, when combined with a hydrogen donor triethanolamine (TEOA), the photoinitiation efficiency of the two-component system F4 /TEOA was higher than that of BP/TEOA. Furthermore, the photolysis mechanism of F4 was clarified through identifying the generated active species under light irradiation by electron spin resonance and laser flash photolysis.

Electrospun Lignin-Based Carbon Nanofibers as Supercapacitor Electrodes

Mengni Zhu,Huan Liu,Qiping Cao,Hao Zheng,Dang Xu,Haoyu Guo,Shumei Wang,Yao Li,Jinghui Zhou

Lignin shows great potential for carbon-based functional materials and composite material electronics. However, high heterogeneity, poor thermal stability, and low molecular weight limit the practical application of lignin for fiber-shaped lignin-based materials, especially in the field of supercapacitors with high energy storage devices. Herein, a simple modification and fractionation strategy is designed to obtain lignin for the preparation of high-performance lignin-based carbon fibers (CFs). The modification and fractionation process effectively increases the molecular weight and reduces the heterogeneity of lignin. The introduction of lignin with large molecular weight and low heterogeneity is conducive to reduce the carbon weight loss of the precursor fibers, maintain the morphology of lignin-based CFs, and then significantly improve the specific surface area and energy storage properties. The specific surface area and energy storage density of the obtained lignin-based CFs reach 2042.86 m2/g and 442.2 F/g, respectively. This strategy provides a simple and effective method for the preparation of high-performance, low-cost, and green energy storage materials.

Inhibition of lignin-derived phenolic compounds to cellulase

Qin Lei,Li Wen-Chao,Liu Li,Zhu Jia-Qing,Li Xia,Li Bing-Zhi,Yuan Ying-Jin

Background Lignin-derived phenolic compounds are universal in the hydrolysate of pretreated lignocellulosic biomass. The phenolics reduce the efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis and increase the cost of ethanol production. We investigated inhibition of phenolics on cellulase during enzymatic hydrolysis using vanillin as one of the typical lignin-derived phenolics and Avicel as cellulose substrate. Results As vanillin concentration increased from 0 to 10 mg/mL, cellulose conversion after 72-h enzymatic hydrolysis decreased from 53 to 26 %. Enzyme deactivation and precipitation were detected with the vanillin addition. The enzyme concentration and activity consecutively decreased during hydrolysis, but the inhibition degree, expressed as the ratio of the cellulose conversion without vanillin to the conversion with vanillin (A 0 /A), was almost independent on hydrolysis time. Inhibition can be mitigated by increasing cellulose loading or cellulase concentration. The inhibition degree showed linear relationship with the vanillin concentration and exponential relationship with the cellulose loading and the cellulase concentration. The addition of calcium chloride, BSA, and Tween 80 did not release the inhibition of vanillin significantly. pH and temperature for hydrolysis also showed no significant impact on inhibition degree. The presence of hydroxyl group, carbonyl group, and methoxy group in phenolics affected the inhibition degree. Conclusion Besides phenolics concentration, other factors such as cellulose loading, enzyme concentration, and phenolic structure also affect the inhibition of cellulose conversion. Lignin-blocking agents have little effect on the inhibition effect of soluble phenolics, indicating that the inhibition mechanism of phenolics to enzyme is likely different from insoluble lignin. The inhibition of soluble phenolics can hardly be entirely removed by increasing enzyme concentration or adding blocking proteins due to the dispersity and multiple binding sites of phenolics than insoluble lignin.

Hydrogenolysis of Lignin and C–O Linkages Containing Lignin-Related Compounds over a Macroporous Silicalite-1 Array-Supported Ru-Ni Phosphide Composite

Bo Chen,Zhi-Ze Cao,Zhi-Jun Diao,Liang-Qiu Huang,Si-Jia Zhao,Hong Yuan,Jia-Meng He

Hydrogenolysis via targeted depolymerization of C–O linkages is a techno-economic beneficial process for converting lignin into highly valuable chemicals and clean fuels. In this work, a macroporous silicalite-1 (S-1) array-supported Ru-Ni metallic phosphide composite (Ru-Ni12P5/S-15) was prepared as a catalyst and hydrogenolysis activity under relative mild conditions was investigated using a series of compounds containing ether linkages as lignin-related model compounds. The Lewis acid sites originating from the unreduced Ru species and the macroporous geometry of S-1 significantly influenced hydrogenolysis activity and product selectivity. Analysis of the mechanism demonstrated that both the aryl ether and aliphatic ether linkages were directly hydrogenated over Ru-Ni12P5/S-15. 2D-HSQC-NMR spectroscopy demonstrated that the ether linkages of lignin were efficiently cleaved by Ru-Ni12P5/S-15. Furthermore, the obtained liquid hydrogenolysis products are high value-added chemicals used for pharmaceutical production and can be facilely tuned via the reaction conditions.

Heteroatom-doped and graphitization-enhanced lignin-derived hierarchically porous carbon via facile assembly of lignin-Fe coordination for high-voltage symmetric supercapacitors

Wei Li,Chongyang Li,Ying Xu,Guanhua Wang,Ting Xu,Wenli Zhang,Chuanling Si

Lignin-derived carbon materials are widely used as electrode materials for supercapacitors . However, the electrochemical performance of these materials is limited by the surface chemistry and pore structure characteristics. Herein, a novel and sustainable strategy was proposed to prepare heteroatom-doped lignin-derived carbon material (Fe-NLC) with well-developed pore size distributions and enhanced graphitization structure via a facile lignin-Fe coordination method followed by carbonization . During carbonization , Fe 3+ in lignin-metal complexes evolve into nanoparticles , which act as templates to introduce porous structures in carbon materials. Also, the lignin-Fe coordination structure endows the material with a higher graphitization during carbonization, thereby improving the structural properties of the carbon materials. Due to the removal of Fe 3 O 4 template, the obtained Fe-NLC possessed reasonable pore distribution and nitrigen/oxygen (N/O) functional groups, which can improve the wettability of materials and introduce pseudocapacitance. Accordingly, Fe-NLC possesses a notable specific capacitance of 264 F/g at 0.5 A/g. Furthermore, a symmetric supercapacitor Fe-NLC//Fe-NLC with a high voltage window (1.8 V) was constructed. The symmetric supercapacitor exhibits a maximum energy density of 15.97 Wh/kg at 450 W/kg, demonstrating well application prospects. This paper proposes a novel approach for preparing carbon materials via lignin-metal coordination to provide an alternative way to explore sustainable and low-cost energy storage materials .

Enhancing the Performance of Biodegradable Lignin Nanoparticle/PVA Composite Films via Phenolation Pretreatment of Lignin Using a Novel Ternary Deep Eutectic Solvent

Xiansheng Cao,Xueping Li,Ruchun Wu,Bao Liu,Wenfei Lin

As an environment-friendly biodegradable material, poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) has been focused on improving performance and expanding its applications. In this study, improved performance lignin nanoparticle/PVA composite film was prepared by phenolation of bagasse lignin (BL) using a novel ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES). The effects of introduction of DES-phenolated lignin (DL) nanoparticles with different additions (1, 3, 5, 10 wt%) on the properties of DL/PVA composite film were comprehensively studied by mechanical performance test, UV-shielding performance test, contact angle measurement, thermogravimetric analyses and DPPH free radical scavenging activity. The experimental results indicated that lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) were homogeneously distributed in a biodegradable PVA matrix due to hydrogen bonds between the PVA matrix and lignin nanoparticles. With the introduction of DES pretreatment on native bagasse lignin, the various performances of DL/PVA composite films, such as tensile strength, surface hydrophobicity, UV-shielding and thermal stability, were enhanced in comparison with both pure PVA film and BL/PVA composite film incorporated with DES-untreated BL. The tensile strength of DL/PVA composite film with 3 wt% addition increased to 97.79 MPa from 69.41 MPa for pure PVA film, and the water contact angle increased from 43.7° to 84.2°. DL/PVA composite film with 10 wt% addition shielded 95.8% of the UV spectrum (400–200 nm). Moreover, after incorporating the DL nanoparticles into the PVA matrix, the as-obtained DL/PVA composite films displayed good antioxidant activity by eliminating most of the DPPH free radicals. With 10 wt% addition of DL nanoparticles, the DPPH radical scavenging activity of DL/PVA composite film increased by about 76% compared with pure PVA film. These enhanced properties were attributed to the more phenolic hydroxyl groups of DL nanoparticles than of BL and the hydrogen-bonding interactions. In conclusion, the DES-phenolation pretreatment of lignin clearly improved the properties of PVA composite films. Furthermore, as both lignin and PVA are biodegradable, the lignin nanoparticle/PVA composite film may be a promising candidate for fully biodegradable robust coating materials with vital potential applications, such as UV-shielding and food packaging, etc.
