Deep eutectic solvents (DES) are renowned for their effectiveness in deconstructing lignocellulose and extracting lignin, yet the challenges lie in lignin condensation and the disposal of the DES remnants after pretreatment. To overcome these issues, this work proposed a holistic strategy utilizing deep eutectic solvent (DES)-driven lignocellulose deconstruction to upgrade lignocellulose into nitrogen-doped carbon dots (CDs) and iron-decorated porous carbons, serving as photocatalysts and adsorbents, respectively. These nitrogen-doped CDs via the choline chloride/FeCl 3 DES pretreatment exhibited abundant nitrogen/oxygen functional groups, enhancing photocatalytic activities and facilitating effective charge separation and transfer. The photocatalytic efficiency of the CDs on dyes reached 97 % under acidic conditions primarily, and free radical quenching experiments indicated that singlet oxygen was the dominant oxidant species. Moreover, the adsorption capabilities of Fe-decorated porous carbons for Congo red reached 2432.3 mg·g −1 , surpassing most existing carbon materials. The adsorption mechanism was due to a synergistic effect including physical adsorption, coordination, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic, and π-π interactions. This study proposed a synergetic conversion of DES and lignocellulose into functional carbon materials for wastewater remediation, which inspired the development of a green and cost-effective biorefinery.

High-density fuel additives are important for heavy transportation. Production of high-density fuel additives from renewable resources has been receiving increasing attention in recent years. Despite the progress in the depolymerization of lignin, cellulose, and hemicelluloses, there are limited studies on integrating lignin and carbohydrates to make value-added products. Here we design a route to synthesize high-density fuel additives with lignin-derived monophenolics and carbohydrate-derived furanics. We performed Brønsted base-catalyzed C–C coupling of phenolics and furanics followed by hydrodeoxygenation catalyzed by a synthesized Ir–ReOx/SiO2 catalyst. Under optimized reaction conditions, the coupling product of phenolics and furanics, bicyclic furyl phenyl precursors, reached a yield of over 90%, and was further hydrodeoxygenated to bicyclohexyl alkanes with a yield of over 98%. The current two-step strategy demonstrates high-selectivity of preparing high-density hydrocarbon fuels from lignocelluloses and provides a possible way to utilize all components of lignocellulosic biomass in an integrated upgrading pathway.

Lignin–containing cellulose nanofibrils (LCNF) have attracted extensive attention in the field of antibacterial due to the properties both of lignin and nanofibrils. The evenly distributed nano–lignin in LCNF can reduce Ag + , and the fiber network structure of nanofibrils may prevent the sedimentation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), which makes LCNF promising candidates for one–step preparation and deposition of AgNPs. Herein, carboxylated lignocellulose nanofibrils (CLCNF) with high stability were used to initiate the redox reaction. AgNPs (∼10.45 nm) were successfully prepared and homogeneously anchored onto CLCNF (Ag–L NPs–CLCNF). After compositing with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TH), Ag–L NPs–CLCNF constructed a reversible redox quinone/catechol chemistry, imparting hydrogels with long–lasting reproducible adhesion and antimicrobial activity. Moreover, the incorporation of Ag–L NPs–CLCNF significantly improved the tensile strength (30.87 kPa), compressive strength (368.11 kPa) and thermal stability of the hydrogels, and that the Ag–L NPs–CLCNF hydrogel were self–healing. Importantly, the hydrogel containing Ag–L NPs–CLCNF can realize the controlled delivery of TH, giving it excellent antibacterial activity with accompanied good biocompatibility and significantly promoting full–thickness skin wound healing. This work offers a novel idea for preparing antibacterial hydrogels from lignocellulosic nanofibrils and the hydrogels have great application prospects in wound dressing.

Pretreatment is the key step to convert lignocelluloses to sustainable biofuels, biochemicals or biomaterials. In this study, a green pretreatment method based on choline chloride-lactic acid deep eutectic solvent (ChCl-LA) and niobium-based single-atom catalyst (Nb/CN) was developed for the fractionation of corn straw and further enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose. With this strategy, significant lignin removal of 96.5 % could be achieved when corn straw was pretreated by ChCl-LA (1:2) DES over Nb/CN under 120 °C for 6 h. Enzymatic hydrolysis of the cellulose-enriched fraction (CEF) presented high glucose yield of 92.7 % and xylose yield of 67.5 %. In-depth investigations verified that the high yields of fractions and monosaccharides was attributed to the preliminary fractionation by DES and the deep fractionation by Nb/CN. Significantly, compared to other reported soluble catalysts, the synthesized single-atom catalyst displayed excellent reusability by simple filtration and enzymatic hydrolysis. The recyclability experiments showed that the combination of ChCl-LA DES and Nb/CN could be repeated at least three times for corn straw fractionation, moreover, the combination displayed remarkable feedstock adaptability.

The co-production of hydrogen and value-added biochemicals from lignocellulose utilizing solar energy has been regarded as one of the technologies most potentially able to alleviate the current energy crisis. Here, we demonstrate a cost-effective photoreforming strategy for lignocellulose valorization using a carbon nitride-supported platinum single-atom photocatalyst. An advanced H 2 evolution rate of 6.34 mmol mol Pt –1 h –1 is achieved over the optimal catalyst, which is around 4.6 and 30.5 times higher compared with the nanosized Pt counterpart and pristine carbon nitride, respectively. Meanwhile, the monosaccharides are oxidized to value-added lactic acid with >99% conversion and extraordinary selectivity up to 97%. The theoretical calculations show that with Pt incorporation, the photogenerated holes are predominantly localized on the metal sites while the photogenerated electrons are concentrated on C 3 N 4 , thus enhancing the effective separation of charge carriers. This work provides a promising avenue for the simultaneous production of green H 2 and bio-based chemicals by biomass photorefinery.

Bacillus subtilis(B. subtilis) has booming application prospects in the feed industry as a value-added probiotic. Considering the intermediate and end saccharides of glucan and xylan digestion during lignocellulose biorefinery processing, the various digested saccharides were detected to disclose the bio-uptake and fermenting characteristics by solo or co-fermentation, especially with respect to five monosaccharides, cellobiose, and functional food additive—xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS).B. subtiliscan directly ferment XOS without xylose, achieving a cell yield of 0.71 g/g, while it hardly utilizes cellobiose except glucose co-fermentation. With a 5 g/L glucose addition and co-fermentation, bacterial cell yield was improved to 0.70 g/g. In total,B. subtilishad a 0.56–0.90 g/g cell yield from corncob-digested saccharides and the highest saccharide-uptaking rate of 98%. This study provides critical insights and experimental data to advance lignocellulosic biorefinery technologies, particularly for probiotics production and simplification of enzymatic hydrolysis, as well as the potential application in high value-added XOS biopurification.

The traditional lignocellulose pretreatment by deep eutectic solvent (DES) was usually conducted under higher acidic, alkaline and high temperature conditions, which leads to the severe degradation of xylan, decreasing the subsequent reducing sugar concentration by enzymatic hydrolysis and further ethanol fermentation. It is essential to develop an effective DES that selectively removes lignin while preventing excessive xylan degradation during lignocellulose pretreatment. An effective ethylene glycol-assisted ternary DES was designed to treat corn straw (CS) at 100 °C for 6 h. 65.51 % lignin removal was achieved, over 93.46 % cellulose and 50.22 % xylan were retained in pretreated CS with excellent enzymatic digestibility (glucan conversion of 77.05 % and xylan conversion of 71.72 %), total sugar conversion could reach 75.93 %, implying the unique capacity to selectively remove lignin while preserving carbohydrate components. Furthermore, the universality of the selective removal of lignin and effective retention of xylan by ternary DES has been successfully proven by other polyols. The enzymatic hydrolysate of ternary DES-pretreated CS fermented over our genetically engineered yeast strain SFA1 OE gave a high ethanol yield of 0.488 g/g total reducing sugar, demonstrating the effectiveness of the polyol-assisted ternary DES pretreatment in achieving high-efficiency cellulosic ethanol production.

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and irreversible sulfation of the negative electrode in lead-acid batteries can significantly decrease their service life while operating in the high-rate partial state of charge (HRPSoC) mode. To overcome this challenge, composites with a 3D structure of nitrogen-doped graphene oxide /sodium lignosulfonate composites (GLSN) were synthesized hydrothermally by utilizing graphene oxide (GO), sodium lignosulfonate (LS), and urea as raw materials, and added to the negative active material (NAM) of lead-acid batteries as additives. SEM, XRD, and XPS were utilized to characterize the composites. Meanwhile, the electrochemical properties of the composite electrodes and simulated battery performance were tested. The results established that GLSN composites were composed of a three-dimensional mesoporous structure. The addition of 0.5 weight percent GLSN to NAM effectively suppresses HER, significantly improves the initial discharge specific capacity (182.91 mAh·g −1 ), and prolongs the HRPSoC cycle life (19,552 times) of lead-acid batteries.

The interactions between the three major components of lignocellulose significantly affect the thermochemical conversion process and product distribution. Herein, the role of hydrogen bonding and the melting behaviors among the three major components on different H 2 production stages during alkaline thermal treatment (ATT) of lignocellulose are revealed for the first time. The melting behavior of xylan (120 ∼ 210 °C) and the unique hydrogen bonding between cellulose and xylan reinforced by molten xylan (120 ∼ 160 °C) are essentially responsible for the hysteresis of dehydrogenation and formation of active char (160 ∼ 235 °C). Hydrogen bonding gradually disappears during the formation and further reaction of active char. The melting behavior of xylan also hinders the mass transfer of gaseous products at 235 ∼ 350 °C and promotes the methanation reaction of active char. The slight melting behavior of lignin (200 ∼ 250 °C) has minimal effect on the dehydrogenation process, but exacerbates the carbonization reaction of the ATT process, leading to a decrease in H 2 production. Subsequently, the conversion of char is the main reaction above 350 °C and increasing the alkali addition facilitates the efficient conversion of char. Especially, the small discrepancy between the fitted and experimental values of H 2 production from ATT of real lignocellulose provides new insights into establishing a predictive model for H 2 production based on the three major components.

Reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF) is an effective technique that enables lignin depolymerization into aromatic monomers while preserving cellulose for downstream valorization. However, the typically prolonged reaction durations (>3 h) required for conventional RCF, stemming from slow kinetics of lignin extraction and depolymerization, impeding its industrial scalability. This study systematically investigated solvent composition, acid concentration, and reaction parameters to accelerate RCF kinetics and modulate monomer distribution. Through rapid benchmark reactions measured immediately at target temperature (0 h) using Ni/C, we demonstrated that a phosphoric acid-assisted RCF process in ethanol–water solvent achieves efficient lignin depolymerization. Remarkably, by finely tuning the acid concentration in the reaction system, this approach achieved a high monomer yield of 31% at 0 h, with a remarkably high production efficiency of 3.44 mg monomers per g lignin per min, exceeding most previously reported rates. Time course analysis further established that precise acid tuning and identifying the optimal temporal window are critical for maximizing monomer yield while preserving carbohydrates. Under optimized conditions employing 0.3 wt.‰ H3PO4, an aromatic monomer yield of 43% was attained within only 30 minutes. The resulting cellulose-rich solid residue, containing the RCF catalyst, was directly converted to ethylene glycol (35% yield) via an integrated one-pot aqueous-phase hydrolysis-hydrogenolysis process. This simultaneous valorization strategy also facilitated effective catalyst recovery and reuse. Our work establishes an efficient and potentially scalable rapid RCF paradigm, offering a promising route for the holistic utilization of lignocellulosic biomass.

Intelligent wearable devices based on laser-induced graphene (LIG) have attracted significant attention for human health monitoring. This paper proposed an innovative all-in-one design for preparing a self-powered smart insole using laser-induced MXene-composited graphene hybrid (LIG@MXene) from lignocellulose precursor. By incorporating MXene into the LIG, the composite achieved improved crystallinity and reduced defects, contributing to the electrical conductivity (17.2 Ω∙sq −1 ) and structural stability. The optimal laser processing parameters are 55% for laser power and 70 mm s −1 for etching rate. The optimized LIG@MXene composite functions as a versatile platform for integrating triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) with a high output power of 35 V cm −2 , supercapacitor with a superior areal capacitance of 71.4 mF cm −2 and the excellent cycling stability of 89.5% retention, Joule heater of the maximum heating temperature of 113 °C at 5 V, and various flexible sensors for pressure, humidity and sweat composition with high sensitivity and linearity. In particular, the minimum L-tyrosine limit of detection in sweat is only 9.60 µM. These functional modules are embedded within an insole via a direct laser writing technology, which only emitted 9.10 kg CO 2 eq during manufacturing. The direct laser-patterned synthesis of LIG@MXene composite represents a significant step forward in advancing smart wearable electronic devices.
