To improve the performance of the nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI)-based advanced oxidation process (AOPs), a sulfidation pre-modification endowed nZVI with stable reduction nature mechanism was proposed, and a coupled system of activating PMS with sulfidized nanoscale zero-valent iron supported by biochar(S-nZVI/BC@PMS) was constructed in this study. It could be found that sulfidation state and formation, largely dependent on the sulfidized modification method, had a great impact on the enhancement for nZVI/BC in activating PMS for Acid Red 73 degradation. Compared with original nZVI/BC, the formed FeS shell blocked the external air to protect the internal Fe 0 , and S-nZVI/BC became relatively hydrophobic, which could slow down the material corrosion by water and dissolved oxygen to enhance the reaction durability. Appropriate sulfidation reduced the electrochemical impedance and enhanced the electrical conductivity of the catalyst, which facilitated the electron transfer in the system, and the participation of reducing sulfur species enabled the reaction to form a positive cycle and ensure a prolonged duration. Excessive sulfidation caused the material to become unstable and thus susceptible to air erosion, reducing the efficiency of contaminant removal. Due to the FeS protective shell, hydrophobicity of S-nZVI/BC and the promoted electron transfer in the system, S-nZVI/BC@PMS system secured more free radicals and had longer reaction time under the same conditions. In addition, S-nZVI/BC had good antioxidant properties, universality, and reusability for practical applications. These findings not only elucidated the superiority of S-nZVI/BC@PMS system but also provided new insights into cost-saving and efficient advanced oxidation processes.

A core–shell structure results in zero-valent iron nanoparticles (NZVI) with manifold functional properties. In this study, the long-term effects of NZVI on hydrogen sulphide removal in an anaerobic sludge digester were investigated. Within 20 days, the average hydrogen sulphide content in the biogas was successfully reduced from 300 (or 3620 of sulphate-rich sludge) mg Nm−3 to 6.1 (121), 0.9 (3.3) and 0.5 (1.3) mg Nm−3 in the presence of 0.05, 0.10 and 0.20% (wt) NZVI, respectively. Methane yield was enhanced at the low NZVI dose (0.05–0.10%) but decreased at the elevated dose (0.20%). Methane production and volatile solid degradation analyses implied that doses of 0.5–0.10% NZVI could accelerate sludge stabilization during anaerobic digestion. The phosphorus fractionation profile suggested that methane production could be inhibited at the elevated NZVI dose, partly due to the limited availability of soluble phosphorus due to the immobilization of bioavailable-P through the formation of vivianite. An analysis of the reducible inorganic sulphur species revealed that the elimination of hydrogen sulphide occurred via the reaction between hydrogen sulphide and the oxide shell of NZVI, which mainly formed FeS and some FeS2 and S0.

Groundwater contaminated with toxic metals and petroleum hydrocarbons presents long-term risks due to the different transport and removal mechanisms of these contaminants. Co-occurrence of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and benzene (C 6 H 6 ) is particularly challenging, requiring combined redox transformation and hydrophobic adsorption for effective remediation. In this study, a porous and mechanically robust permeable reactive barrier (PRB) material, composed of sodium alginate, nanoscale zero-valent iron, and activated carbon (SA–nZVI–AC) was synthesized using a combined sol–gel and freeze-drying method. Unlike conventional nZVI systems that primarily focus on metal reduction, this composite integrates polymer stabilization, carbon adsorption, and iron-mediated redox for simultaneous removal of mixed metal–organic pollutants. Freeze-drying proved to be a key processing step, improving structural integrity, anti-clogging capacity, and thus long-term applicability of nZVI-based PRBs. Material characterization revealed a mesoporous framework, stabilized iron phases, and abundant oxygen-containing functional groups. Batch experiments demonstrated efficient simultaneous removal of Cr(VI) and C 6 H 6 , with adsorption kinetics following pseudo-second-order models ( k 2 values for total Cr and C 6 H 6 were 0.50 and 0.06 g mg −1 min −1 , respectively) and isotherms fitting the Langmuir model. Removal efficiencies exceeded 95.28% for Cr(VI) and 85.11% for C 6 H 6 at pH 7–9 and remained high (>78.15% and > 91.31%, respectively) under interfering ions. Column experiments confirmed sustained contaminant attenuation with breakthrough delayed to approximately 60 days. Cr(VI) was immobilized within the barrier through coupled adsorption and reduction, while C 6 H 6 was effectively retained via physical adsorption within the PRB matrix. Post-column microbial analyses suggested secondary biochemical interactions within the PRB. These results demonstrate that freeze-dried SA–nZVI–AC functions as a coupled adsorption–reduction–immobilization system, showing strong potential for long-term PRB applications in remediating groundwater co-contaminated with metals and organic compounds.

Arsenic (As) is a contaminant of global concern due to its negative impact on environmental systems, where As occurs mainly as two inorganic species, arsenite (As(III)) and arsenate (As(V)). Thus the simultaneously removal of both As(III) and As(V) from groundwater is a challenging issue. In this paper, zero-valent iron nanoparticles ( n ZVI) with high surface-active sites were used to simultaneously remove both As(III) and As(V) species from groundwater with removal efficiencies >99.9% for an initial concentration 100 μg L −1 . Ion chromatography atomic fluorescence (IC-AFS) analysis indicated that during removal As(III) was oxidized to As(V), while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that the As species were adsorbed on to the surface of n ZVI by a complexation reaction. Furthermore, thermodynamic studies of the adsorption process indicated that adsorption was a spontaneous and endothermic chemisorption process. Finally, practical removal of both As species by n ZVI from real groundwaters was demonstrated with removal efficiencies of 99.9 and 70.9% for As(V) and As(III), respectively. The presence of other coexisting ions affected the removal efficiency, with phosphate and carbonate decreasing the removal efficiencies of both As(III) and As(V) due competition with active binding sites on the surface of n ZVI. Overall, this work demonstrated that n ZVI was a promising adsorbent for the practical removal of inorganic As species from complex environmental matrices such as groundwater.

In this work, we prepared microbial extracellular polymeric substances-coated nano zero valent iron (EPS@nZVI) for Sb(V) removal. Batch adsorption experiments showed that the synthesized EPS@nZVI had superior maximum adsorption capacity (202 mg/g at pH = 5) for Sb(V), much higher than that of bare nZVI especially under nonacidic conditions. The adsorption results fit the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Redlich-Peterson model well, implying that the adsorption was more like a chemical adsorption process. The spectral analysis showed that EPS could protect inner Fe 0 from air, preventing nZVI from generating a passivation layer on the surface, and decreasing the concentration of hydroxyl radicals in aqueous environment, which increased the reactivity of nZVI and strengthened the reducibility and adsorbability of nZVI. The coated EPS can improve the reactivity of nZVI instead of inhibiting its electron transfer. Moreover, the electrostatic repulsion between EPS@nZVI and Sb(OH) 6 − was decreased compared to that of bare nZVI after the introduction of EPS. The functional groups of EPS could play a significant role in the reduction adsorption, especially under alkaline conditions where nZVI was passivated. This work proved that EPS@nZVI has great prospects in simultaneously combining the reduction activity of nZVI in water and its stability in air.

Novel nanoscale zero-valent iron/activated carbon fibers composite was successfully fabricated. • nZVI/ACFs exhibited excellent capability toward phosphate under the nitrate mediation. • Phosphate can be effectively immobilized and captured across relatively wide pH range. • Nitrate ion can accelerate nZVI corrosion and then enhance the uptake of phosphate. • Remarkable performance was obtained of nZVI/ACFs in fixed-bed column studies. Serious surface passivation and subsequent reduction of reactivity significantly restricted the application of nanoscale zero-valent iron. In this study a novel nanoscale zero-valent iron/activated carbon fibers (nZVI/ACFs) composite was successfully constructed via loading method to overcome the intrinsic defects and enhance the reactivity of nZVI according to the special physicochemical properties of ACFs, achieving excellent phosphate removal behavior and performance. High uptake of phosphate by nZVI/ACFs was maintained across relatively wide pH range and in the presence of co-existing anions, monovalent K + ion and HA, whereas divalent Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ cations could further enhance the phosphate removal due to the chemical precipitation and cation bridging effect. Phosphate adsorption isotherms and kinetics could be well described by the Langmuir model and pseudo-second order model, indicating that phosphate experienced monolayer sorption and this removal process and mechanism was dominated by chemisorption. Notably, the presence of nitrate ion in nZVI/ACFs-phosphate remediation system significantly enhanced the uptake of phosphate on account of the nitrate mediation effect. Specifically, as a special oxidant and electron acceptor, nitrate ion can promote nZVI surface corrosion and generate abundant soluble irons, then transformed into corresponding iron (hydr)oxides, which were favorable to phosphate immobilization through multiple mechanisms containing adsorption, coagulation/co-precipitation. Furthermore, the remarkable performance in fixed-bed column studies under condition of natural water system indicated nZVI/ACFs was a promising candidate for the practical applicability in actual phosphorus wastewater treatment. This study describes the chromium (VI) removal in aqueous solution by nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI)-Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposites, which were prepared by a novel in situ reduction method. The effects of several factors, including ionic strength, temperature, co-existing anions and cations and natural organic matters were evaluated. The ionic strength was found to be insignificant to the removal efficiency, while temperature was critical. With the increase in temperature from 10–40 °C, 32% removal efficiency increased within 2 h from 49.96%. Most anions hindered the reaction, especially in high concentration, such as HCO 3 - and PO 4 3 - , causing a drop of the removal efficiency from 66.48% to 57.47% and 59.93% respectively. In contrast, both cations and moderate natural organic matter facilitated the removal of Cr(VI). It is noteworthy that calcium hardness can greatly promote the reaction, 100% removal efficiency was achieved within 90 min and the rate constant k 2 reached 0.528 g mg −1 min −1 after adding 40 mg L −1 Ca 2+ , which was ten times more than that in other cases. Possible mechanism was presented, and TEM, SEM and FITR analyses were used to verify these speculations. Hopefully, these results can contribute to a better development of the water treatment facilitates for nZVI-Fe 3 O 4 composites, maintaining its high efficiency in real aqueous environment.

Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) assisted anaerobic digestion (AD) is considered an effective approach for mediating antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) dissemination in activated sludge. However, little is known about the mechanisms that drive antibiotic resistomes evolution in relation with their physiological roles distinct from protection of bacteria against antimicrobials. Metagenomic sequencing showed that efflux pumps and rRNA methyltransferase genes were the most prevalent ARGs in anaerobes, being responsible for the variations of antibiotic resistome upon nZVI addition. Particularly, to withstand the oxidative stimuli derived from initially 9 days nZVI exposure, genes involved in the two component systems ( PhoRB , BaeSR , EvgSA ) and global regulator networks ( MarA , SoxS ) were increased, activating the chromosomally encoded intrinsic efflux pumps expression. Furthermore, to benefit for survival, the polyspecific efflux pumps were involved in the microbial physiological adaptations of enhanced siderophores, lipid moieties, and quorum sensing molecules exportation, which induced the adaptative efflux pumps expression. On the other hand, to maintain the protein synthesis under oxidative condition, genes encoding Rsm, Erm, and Rlu family methyltransferases were notably up-regulated via horizontal transfer, inducing the acquired rRNA methylation resistance. Importantly, after prolonged exposure to nZVI for 18 and 27 days, the antibiotic resistomes were measurably decreased, due to the recovered oxidative state and increased membrane rigidity. Overall, these findings provide a deep understanding on the necessity of antibiotic resistome evolution for anaerobes to adapt to nZVI exposure for survival, which can be introduced to improve the ARGs risks analysis.

CAs (carbon aerogels) are potential novel adsorbents for Cr(VI). However, their tradition preparation method presents a series of problems such as the tedious processes and the limited scaling up production caused by extreme conditions. Improved preparation methods are tried to explore so that supercritical process could be avoided. While the explanation of the adsorption behavior and mechanism remain incomplete in the presence of polyanions. In this paper, a series of sodium alginate/chitosan composite (SA/CTS) carbon aerogels with or without nZVI (nano zero-valent iron) doped are intentionally designed, which were prepared without supercritical process and expected to a significant improvement in Cr(VI) removal in wastewater while facilitating preparation and separation. The adsorption performance of carbon aerogels for Cr(VI) were investigated as functions of pH, adsorbent dosage and adsorption temperature. Following the study of adsorption behavior of Cr(VI) in the coexistence of polyanions, this work presented a detailed rationale for the different competing anions having different effects on Cr(VI) sorption . Four isotherms and three kinetic models were used to explain the adsorption behaviors. The maximum adsorption capacities of CTS900 and nZVI@CTS900 were estimated to be 183.85 mg/g and 204.35 mg/g at 35 °C using the Sips model, respectively, which showed favorable performance over carbon aerogel materials that have been reported so far. Besides the study of factors influencing adsorption, the mechanism of Cr(VI) sorption mainly involved electrostatic interactions , hydrogen bonding attraction, and redox reactions were demonstrated through the multi characteristic analysis. As a result, prepared CTSs and nZVI@CTSs perform acceptable application prospects in Cr(VI)-containing water and wastewater.

The escalating presence of antibiotic contaminants in wastewater presents substantial environmental and public health challenges, primarily due to their role in the proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This study examines the effectiveness of a hybrid system integrating nano zerovalent iron (nZVI) and layered double hydroxides (LDH) in treating wastewater contaminated with ciprofloxacin (CIP). Reactor experiments revealed that incorporating nZVI@LDH mitigated the shock caused by CIP while sustaining a methane production rate that was 116 % higher than that of the control group. Furthermore, there was a 50 % increase in CIP removal efficiency. Notably, there was a significant enrichment of hydrogenotrophic methanogens, such as Methanobacterium and Methanolinea , in the nZVI@LDH-enhanced reactors. Additionally, the levels of reactive oxygen species decreased by 50 %, from 11,813 ± 1230 to 4525 ± 1030 counts/s, and the abundance of ARGs declined by 75–88 % compared to the control reactors. An external electric field further promoted electron transfer, boosting the relative abundance of electrochemically active bacteria, with Proteobacteria comprising up to 40 % of the microbial community in the 1 V + nZVI@LDH reactor. This hybrid system demonstrates significant efficacy in degrading CIP and decreasing ARGs generation, underscoring its potential as a sustainable strategy for managing antibiotic-laden wastewater.

In this work, two novel nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) composites (nanoscale zero-valent iron and copper-intercalated montmorillonite (MMT-nFe0/Cu0) and carbon microsphere-supported sulfurized nanoscale zero-valent iron (CMS@S-nFe0)) were used to treat soil contaminated with both Cr(VI) and p-nitrophenol (PNP), and added persulfate (PMS). Experiments found that the pollutant removal effect has a great relationship with the ratio of water to soil, the amount of catalyst, the amount of PMS, and the pH value. When the conditions are adjusted to the best (water–soil = 2:1, catalyst 30 g/kg, PMS 15 g/kg, pH 7–9), both materials fix Cr(VI) well and decompose PNP. The removal rates of Cr(VI) and PNP by the MMT-nFe0/Cu0system are 90.4% and 72.6%, respectively, while the CMS@ S-nFe0system is even more severe, reaching 94.8% and 81.3%. Soil column leaching experiments also proved that the fixation effect of Cr can last for a long time and PNP can be effectively decomposed. Through detection methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), we found that Cr(VI) was effectively reduced to Cr(III) by Fe0and Fe2+ions and subsequently transformed into stable FeCr2O4spinel oxides, and the groups produced after the decomposition of PNP could also help fix the metal. This work provides a way to simultaneously treat Cr(VI) and PNP pollution, and also allows the use of multifunctional nZVI composites in complex soil environments.

Carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 ) contamination in groundwater poses persistent environmental risks due to its high toxicity, resistance to complete dechlorination, and the accumulation of hazardous intermediates in subsurface systems. This study developed a synergistic microorganism-CMC-nZVI coupled system, combining carboxymethyl cellulose-modified nanoscale zero-valent iron (CMC-nZVI) with Enterobacter ludwigii CT-7. Under optimized conditions (0.2 g/L CMC-nZVI, pH 6.5), the system achieved a 95.8% CCl 4 removal efficiency within 72 h, significantly higher than the microbial-only (81.0%) and standalone CMC-nZVI (69.4%) treatments. Notably, the coupled system enhanced dehydrogenase and cytochrome P450 activities by 1.5–2.3 folds, while effectively suppressing chloroform accumulation. CMC-nZVI acted as a sustained source of Fe 2 ⁺ and H 2 , providing essential electron donors and mitigating ROS-induced oxidative stress, which increased cell viability by 25%. Transcriptomic analysis revealed a significant upregulation of key functional genes, with redox-active proteins and iron-transport genes (e.g., feoB , suf series) showing 3.2–5.8-fold increases in expression levels. These findings confirm a coordinated mechanism linking Fe 0 oxidation to enhanced enzymatic C-Cl bond cleavage. This study provides a robust and high-performance strategy for the deep dechlorination of chlorinated hydrocarbons in complex subsurface environments.
