The effect of nanoscale titanium dioxide (nano-TiO 2 ) particle size on the performance of chitosan/zein (C/Z) film loaded with red radish anthocyanin (RRA) was studied. The microstructure and spectral characteristic of films were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Results demonstrated that the smaller the size of nano-TiO 2 , the stronger the interaction with the film matrix, the tighter the network structure formed, and the smaller the existing aggregates. Incorporation of nano-TiO 2 improved the thermal stability, photostability, hydrophobicity and UV-Vis light barrier properties of films. However, the mechanical properties and swelling degree of films had been reduced to a noticeable extent. Moreover, the nanocomposite films exhibited excellent sensitivity to pH, and the color values of C/Z/R-25 nm and C/Z/R-100 nm films displayed a high correlation with the freshness of mushroom. These results were significant to enhance the stability of anthocyanin and prepare high-performance bio-based composite films for visual monitoring of food.

Superior anti-fouling property, excellent mechanical strength, high flux and rejection of the membrane are essential for the separation of oil/water emulsions. In this work, a crack-free TiO 2 layer was fabricated on the inner surface of three-channel stainless steel hollow fiber (TCSSHF) membrane, which was coated with nano-TiO 2 particles suspension and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution and then calcined at 500 °C. The prepared nano-TiO 2 modified three-channel stainless steel hollow fiber (TiO 2 -TCSSHF) membrane was systematically characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), pore size distribution, water contact angle and dynamic underwater oil-adhesion measurement. TiO 2 -TCSSHF membrane showed a permeation flux of 760 L m −2 h −1 and a rejection of 99.8% for the separation of 5000 ppm vegetable oil/water emulsion at 0.10 MPa. The membrane also showed the superior fouling resistance and recyclability. Therefore, TiO 2 -TCSSHF membrane provided a promising potential for the practical application of the oil/water emulsion separation.

A glassy carbon electrode modified with nano TiO 2 and multi-walled carbon nanotubes composites dispersed in a novel cationic surfactant was described for the determination of trace mercury(II) by linear anodic stripping voltammetry. Under optimal experimental conditions, the linear sweep anodic stripping peak current was linear with the concentration of Hg(II) in the range of 0.1–100 μmol L −1 with a detection limit of 0.025 μmol L −1 . The sensitivity was found to be 3.7014 A/mol L −1 . The proposed electrode also showed a high selectivity for mercury in the presence of common potential interfering metal ions. Moreover, the proposed electrode revealed good reproducibility and stability. The proposed method was successfully applied for the determination of Hg(II) in river water and industrial wastewater samples.

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is a commonly used plasticizer that is frequently detected in water samples due to its widespread use. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (n-TiO 2 ) have been found to enhance the harmful effects of organic contaminants by increasing their bioavailability in aquatic environments. However, the combined toxic effects of DBP and n-TiO 2 on aquatic organisms remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the neurotoxicity of DBP and n-TiO 2 synergistic exposure during the early life stage of zebrafish. The results of the study revealed that co-exposure of DBP and n-TiO 2 led to an increase in deformities and a significant reduction in the active duration of zebrafish larvae. Furthermore, the co-exposure of DBP and n-TiO 2 resulted in elevated levels of oxidative stress and altered gene expression related to neurodevelopment and apoptosis. Notably, n-TiO 2 exacerbated the oxidative damage and apoptosis induced by DBP alone exposure. Additionally, co-exposure of the 1.0 mg/L DBP and n-TiO 2 significantly affected the expression of genes associated with neurodevelopment. Moreover, disturbances in amino acid metabolism and interference with lipid metabolism were observed as a result of DBP and n-TiO 2 co-exposure. In general, n-TiO 2 aggravated the neurotoxicity of DBP in the early life stage of zebrafish by increasing oxidative stress, apoptosis, and disrupting amino acid synthesis and lipid metabolism. Therefore, it is essential to consider the potential risks caused by DBP and nanomaterials co-existence in the aquatic environment.

In this study, a pioneering methodology is delineated, wherein Fe 2 O 3 -enriched recycled red brick aggregates are harnessed as avant-garde carrier substrates, resulting in a profound enhancement of the intrinsic self-cleansing capabilities of TiO 2 . The innate porous core-shell architecture of these recycled aggregates engenders a notable synergistic interaction between nano-TiO 2 and Fe 2 O 3 , culminating in a marked escalation of photocatalytic efficiency. An exhaustive examination of the degradation proficiency across a spectrum of samples against methyl blue, conducted over a gradient of temporal intervals, has been executed. The findings indicate that the rates of degradation for all samples increase progressively with the prolongation of exposure to UV irradiation. The control group, consisting exclusively of white cement, demonstrated the most diminutive degradation rate, achieving merely a 4 % reduction in methyl blue concentration through UV irradiation alone. Conversely, the nano-TiO2-modified recycled grey brick aggregate (NT-RGBA) and recycled red brick aggregate (NT-RRBA) samples showcased substantially elevated degradation rates, a phenomenon attributable to the incorporation of photocatalytic agents capable of capitalizing on UV energy to expedite the degradation process of methyl blue. The NT-RRBA composite, an amalgamation of the photocatalytic attributes of TiO 2 , the synergistic interplay between Fe 2 O 3 and TiO 2 , and the intricate three-dimensional pore framework of RRBA, manifested the most pronounced degradation rate. To delve deeper into the determinants influencing the efficacy of photocatalytic degradation, a fuzzy inference system has been deployed to construct a mathematical model that scrutinizes the effects of variables such as the initial concentration of pollutants and the flow rate. This quantitative methodology affords to establish a functional relationship that encapsulates the underlying dynamics of the photocatalytic degradation phenomenon. Deploying this functional material, a derivative of construction detritus, paves the way for an innovative strategy of closed-loop resource utilization, marking a significant milestone towards sustainable development within the construction sector.

In the face of complex water quality changes, the application of existing cationic polyacrylamide has been largely limited. In this study, a series of cationic polyacrylamides (TPADs) with excellent flocculation/dewatering performance and low dosage were synthesized through photocatalytic surface initiation using acrylamide (AM) and acryloyloxyethyl trimethylammonium chloride (DAC) as monomers and nano-TiO2 as an initiator. Characterization using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric/differential scanning calorimetry (TG/DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to analyze the structural and morphological properties of TPADs. The initiation mechanism was described and the study on the properties of TPADs shows that the initiation method could obtain the copolymer with extra-high intrinsic viscosity. Furthermore, the flocculation and dewatering performance of TPADs and PADs were investigated in the micro-polluted low turbidity water flocculation test and sludge dewatering test. The application experimental results indicated that TPADs showed satisfactory turbidity removal and sludge dewatering performance by virtue of strong charge neutralization and a bridging effect. The excellent flocculation/dewatering performance was attributed to the photocatalytic surface-initiated method and the nano-TiO2 initiator. Therefore, it is expected to open up new initiation methods in the synthesis of polymeric flocculants for a broad variety of applications.

The high demand for water treatment and environmental restoration via advanced oxidation process (AOP) has estimated the increased production of TiO 2 -based materials. Low cost, high transmittance, durability, and thermal stability, make the recycling low-iron crushed glass an excellent candidate for nano TiO 2 film coating via sol-gel process. Besides support selection, the reactor design plays a vital role in the final product's applicability and efficiency. In this work, small pieces (3–6 mm) of recycled low iron crushed glass were deep coated with multiple layers of nano TiO 2 film for photocatalytic degradation of selected contaminants in a new design packed-bed reactor. A multi-chamber packed-bed photocatalytic reactor was set up for efficient BOD degradation under UV light exposure. SEM, XRD, and BET analysis characterized coating characteristics, morphology, phase, and surface area. For film adherence and coating durability, SEM characteristics and durability of TiO 2 photocatalytic activity tests were performed after the second reutilization. Results revealed that the new reactor can achieve 45.81 up to 79.50% BOD 5 reduction after 24 to 48 h of circulation with constant operation, respectively. low iron crushed glass appeared to be a perfect support for TiO 2 film coating with a BET of 0.0742 m 2 /g after 9 cycles of coating. XRD results showed 95–97% anatase phase crystals with an average particle size of 12.97 nm with different rounds of annealing at 550 °C in muffle. Results underpinned that the technique seems promising to be applied on a large scale for pretreated industrial or pharmaceutical wastewater.

To improve the photocatalytic performance of TiO 2 and make it easier to recycle, the titanosilicate@anatase core-shell micro-nanostructure photocatalysts were designed. The titanosilicate@anatase core-shell micro-nanostructure was fabricated by a two-step method: an acid-assisted hydrothermal treatment of the hydrogen-form natisite and a subsequent calcination . In the first step, the dissolution and recrystallization of Ti species led to the formation of TiO 2 shell over the titanosilicate; in the second step, the calcination not only facilitated the formation of Ti−O−Si bond, but also improved the crystallization of TiO 2 shell. The rutile TiO 2 was not detected even at 900 °C, which could be attributed to the strong interaction between TiO 2 nanocrystals and the titanosilicate core through Ti−O−Si bond at the interface. The formation of Ti−O−Si bond also changed the surface characteristic of the TiO 2 shell, which facilitated the enrichment of RhB dye molecules around the catalyst and induced the fast production of the O 2 •− . The collaboration of the core and the shell contributed to the quick degradation of RhB under visible light and the excellent recycling performance. The growth kinetics of the core-shell micro-nanostructure has been studied in detail, which provided a novel and facile synthesis strategy for the fabrication of TiO 2 micro-nanostructure easy to be recycled.

The interface in carbon fiber (CF)-reinforced polymer composites plays an important role in determining the mechanical properties of composites. In order to improve the interfacial adhesion between the carbon fiber and resin matrix, we presented a facile and rapid method for grafting nano-sized titanium dioxide (nano-TiO 2 ) onto the CF surface by means of thiol–ene click chemistry under UV irradiation. Experimental results demonstrate that the chemical bonds are formed between the CF and nano-TiO 2 . The introduction of nano-TiO 2 significantly enhances the surface energy of fiber and increases the wettability and mechanical interlocking between fiber and resin, resulting in a significant increase in the interfacial properties of composites. Compared to the raw CF/epoxy composites, the composites reinforced by the CF grafted with nano-TiO 2 show an improvement of 78% in the interfacial shear strength. Moreover, the results of the mechanical properties tests reveal that the flexural strength and tensile strength of composites increase by 32.3 and 39.6% after grafting with nano-TiO 2 .

A simple chemical assembly to construct a compatible nano-TiO2-coating on a wood surface has been reported using polyethyleneimine and (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane for recycled wood–polypropylene composites (WPCs). Crystal features, ZETA potential, and FTIR analysis indicated that the assembly was stable and sufficient, which could be verified further using SEM imaging. Via a three-dimensional hydrophobic network in the composite, water absorbance decreased from 2.89 wt% to 0.72 wt%. Ultraviolet and near-infrared resistance were found to be increased for the dispersive nano-network in the composite matrix. In particular, when the assembling nano-interface was 2.0 wt% for the composite, as well as the tensile strength, the elongation at break was enhanced by about 85%. Tg was also enhanced for strong interfacial adhesion and sufficient load transfer. Also, due to the shielding of the nano-network and the coupling aspect of the assembly, the decomposition temperature (Td) of wood and polypropylene were enhanced by 79 °C and 27 °C, respectively.

Poly (butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT)/polylactic acid (PLA) blended with compatibilizers (polycaprolactone, PCL; poly (ethylene glycol), PEG; titanium dioxide, nano-TiO 2 ) ( [email protected] composites) were developed by melt processing. Natamycin incorporated into [email protected] blend composites formed [email protected] films, which exhibited high tensile strength (24.1–43.5 MPa) and elongation at break (85.8–258.2 %), and exhibited good oxygen permeability, water vapor permeability, surface hydrophobicity and biodegradability. The in vitro results revealed that inhibition of Penicillium expansum cell growth of the [email protected] films with addition of 1.0 wt% natamycin reached 95.72 %. The [email protected] film with natamycin effectively reduced incidence of decay (1.52 %) on grapes, maintained their quality, and inhibited the growth of pathogenic fungi to up to 0.42 log cfu·g −1 . This study generates new insights into the preservation properties of antimicrobial [email protected] film, which endow it with great application potential as a novel and eco-friendly packaging material for the food industry.
