The photothermal catalytic pyrolysis of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plastics has been investigated with bifunctional photo-thermo catalysts in a novel photothermal reaction system. Six kinds of catalysts were introduced and explored in an in-situ fixed-bed reactor under 500 °C heated by solar simulator . The results indicated that the hydrogen production and jet fuel selectivity of Ni-Ti-Al catalyst were 34 mol/kg and 80% respectively, which were significantly higher than 7 mol/kg and 38% of Ti-Al. Catalysts loaded with Ni exhibited strong selectivity for aromatic hydrocarbon , achieving 49.51% for Ni-Al and 53.46% for Ni-Ti-Al especially. In addition, Ni-Ti-Al led to high-quality filamentous carbon tubes in smaller diameter, which presented high thermal stability and graphitization . Bifunctional catalyst , especially Ni-Ti-Al possesses obvious photothermal catalytic performance, which is ascribed to relaxations of photogenerated inter- and intra-band electrons of plasmonic metal Ni and excellent carriers transfer capability of non-plasmonic semiconductor TiO 2 . The production of hydrogen and jet fuel from plastic by photothermal catalytic pyrolysis provides an environmentally friendly way for high-value-recycling of large amount of the waste plastics.

Co-, Ni-, and Zn-containing MOFs are prepared and then pyrolyzed to generate materials for ambient temperature NO adsorption. Materials containing Co are much more efficient for NO adsorption than those containing Ni and Zn; therefore, Co is identified as the active phase. The best performing material studied here achieves 100% low concentration (10 ppm) NO adsorption for more than 15 h under a weight hourly space velocity of 120 000 mL g–1 h–1. Powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, and Raman spectroscopies, along with scanning electron microscopy and TEM, are used to probe the physicochemical properties of the materials, particularly the Co active phase, and chemistries involved in NO adsorption–desorption. NO adsorbs on oxygen-covered Co nanoparticle surfaces in the form of nitrates and desorbs as NO at higher temperatures as a result of surface nitrate decomposition. NO storage capacity decreases gradually upon repeated NO adsorption–desorption cycles, likely because of Co3O4 formation during these processes.

In this paper, kraft lignin (KL) was fractionated by organic solvent method, and different lignin fractions were characterized by Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and 1 H– 13 C HSQC NMR. The active functional groups content was analyzed by 31 P NMR and headspace gas chromatography (HS-GC). The results showed that fractionation could efficiently separate different molecular weight lignin fractions and the linkage bonds of lignin fractions F1 to F3 changed as follows: non-condensed linkages ( β -O-4) and condensed linkages ( β -5 and β - β ) both decreased. Moreover, some active functional groups such as phenolic hydroxyl groups and methoxy groups increased by fractionation. The thermochemical properties and volatiles formation rule of fractionized kraft lignin during pyrolysis were studied by thermogravimetric (TG), kinetics analysis, in situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and U-type tube closed system pyrolysis experiment. The result showed that low-molecule lignin fractions were easier to depolymerize than that with high-molecule. Low-molecule lignin fractions had better selectivity of S-type monomer products while high-molecule fractions had better selectivity of G-type monomer products, and pyrolysis conducted at a relatively higher temperature was beneficial to the generation of G-type monomer products.

The production of waste textiles has increased rapidly in the past two decades along with the rapid development of the economy, the majority of which has been either landfilled or incinerated, resulting in energy loss and environmental pollution. Microwave pyrolysis, which can transform heterogeneous and complex waste feedstocks into value-added products, is considered one of the most competitive technologies for processing waste textiles. However, achieving selective product formation during the microwave pyrolysis of waste textiles remains a significant challenge. Herein, sodium acetate, potassium acetate, and nickel acetate were introduced into waste textiles through an impregnation method as raw materials to improve the pyrolysis efficiency. The optimized process parameters indicated that nickel acetate had the most favorable promotional effect of the three acetates. Notably, the waste textiles containing 1.0% Ni exhibited the highest gas production rate, with the hydrogen-containing combustible gas reaching 81.1% and 61.0%, respectively. Using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Raman spectroscopy to characterize the waste textiles before and after pyrolysis, it was found that nickel acetate was converted into metallic nickel (Ni0) during microwave pyrolysis. This active site significantly enhanced the pyrolysis process, and as the gas yield increased, the disorder of the resulting pyrolytic carbon also rose. The proposed Ni0-enhanced microwave pyrolysis mediated by nickel acetate offers a novel method for the efficient disposal and simultaneous resource recovery of waste textiles.

Due to the complexity of biomass structures, the conversion of raw biomass into value-added chemicals is challenging and often requires efficient pretreatment of the biomass. In this paper, a simple and green pre-oxidation method, which was conducted under the conditions of 2 wt% H 2 O 2 , 80 min, and 150 °C, was reported to significantly increase the production of levoglucosan (LG) from biomass pyrolysis. The result showed that the LG yield significantly increased from 2.3 wt% (without pre-oxidation) to 23.1 wt% when pine wood was employed as a sample for pyrolysis at 400 °C, resulting from the removal of hemicellulose fraction and the in-situ acid catalysis of lignin carboxyl groups formed during the pre-oxidation. When the conditions for pre-oxidation became harsher than the above, the LG yield reduced because the decomposition of cellulose fraction in biomass. The study supplies an effective method for utilization of biomass as chemicals.

Continuous feeding techniques integrated with a liquid heating medium represent a promising approach for converting waste plastics into high-value products. Molten salts have great potential as efficient liquid heating media for the pyrolysis of waste plastics. The present study investigates the pyrolysis of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) assisted by LiCl–KCl molten salt in a continuous feeding process. The distribution of plastic pyrolysis products under different pyrolysis temperatures (440‒590 °C), LiCl mass fractions (52‒58 wt%), and feeding rates (18‒30 g/h) was thoroughly evaluated. The results indicate that a temperature of 540 °C is crucial for enhancing gas yield and oil quality, as it provides an optimal balance between pyrolysis and volatilization rates. Increasing the LiCl mass fraction may accelerate the pyrolysis rate and can promote secondary cracking, thereby significantly increasing gas yield and producing considerably lighter oil . The highest gas yield of LDPE was 76.70 wt% at a feeding rate of 27 g/h, which was attributed to gas repolymerization predominating over the secondary cracking of light oil. Additionally, the product characteristics of five common plastics—LDPE, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), waste polyethylene (WPE), and waste polypropylene (WPP)—were investigated and showed distinct characteristics. The gas yield of LDPE was higher than that of PP because the isomerization radicals of PP generate light-component oil via cyclization. Furthermore, this system also exhibits excellent performance in handling waste plastics. This work provides guidance for selecting appropriate operating conditions and establishes a theoretical basis for the subsequent large-scale industrial application of molten salt-assisted plastic pyrolysis

Pyrolysis behavior and volatile product evolution of biomass was investigated. • Kinetic parameters of biomass pyrolysis were estimated by various models. • Pseudo-component kinetics were calculated by the mathematical peak splitting. • Possible effects of each component in biomass on pyrolysis process were summarized. • The complex pyrolysis behavior of distinct biomasses and mechanisms were analyzed. This paper focuses on analyzing biomass pyrolysis processes and mechanisms. Thermogravimetric-mass spectrometric was conducted to investigate pyrolysis behavior and volatile product evolution of biomass feedstocks. This study investigates the pyrolysis of three types of biomass (FR, PW, WS) and their three main pure components (CE, HE, LN). In order to improve the accuracy of reaction models describing pyrolysis process of biomass, the method of mathematical peak splitting was introduced, and the kinetic parameters were calculated for each pseudo-component by the results obtained from peak splitting. A new research framework was established covering feedstock composition, pyrolysis processes, kinetics and reaction mechanisms. The possible effects of different contents of each component in biomass on the pyrolysis process provided a reference for predicting the pyrolysis behavior of different biomasses in industrial applications. With growing importance of biomass utilization under the carbon neutrality goal, our findings also facilitate the improvement of process variables and large-scale pyrolyser design. Microalgae are promising renewable feedstocks for thermochemical conversion due to their rapid growth, high biochemical diversity, and non-competition with food resources. However, the synergistic interactions among carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids during microalgae pyrolysis remain insufficiently understood, hindering the rational control of product distribution. In this study, an improved extraction protocol was developed to obtain high-purity carbohydrate, protein, and lipid fractions from Chlorella vulgaris , enabling systematic evaluation of component-specific and interactive effects during pyrolysis. Co-pyrolysis experiments were conducted using both the extracted fractions and representative model compounds (glucose, aspartic acid, and glycerol monostearate), with product evolution analyzed by Py-GC/MS. The extracted components exhibited thermal decomposition behaviors comparable to those of their corresponding model compounds, confirming the validity of the extraction strategy and model selection. Carbohydrate-protein co-pyrolysis promoted Maillard reactions between amino and carbonyl groups, significantly enhancing the formation of nitrogen-containing compounds such as pyridines and pyrroles. In contrast, protein–lipid interactions favored carbonization pathways, increasing biochar yields while suppressing bio-oil formation. Carbohydrate–lipid co-pyrolysis displayed limited synergy, primarily due to overlapping decomposition pathways and chemically similar oxygenated products. Overall, this work elucidates component-dependent synergistic mechanisms in microalgae pyrolysis and provides a validated framework for predicting and regulating product distributions from microalgal biomass.

A waste-to-membrane strategy enabled RGFs as functional fillers for dye treatment. • RGFs modification tuned the membrane pore structure. • Synergistic RGFs/SBMA improved membrane strength and durability. • Membrane permeability doubled while dye rejection remained above 98%. Organic dye contamination in wastewater poses a persistent challenge for large-scale treatment due to the chemical stability and limited biodegradability of dye molecules. Although membrane separation provides high removal efficiency, its large-scale application is often hindered by high fabrication cost and severe surface fouling. Herein, we propose an integrated “waste-to-membrane” strategy that converts end-of-life wind turbine blades into value-added ultrafiltration membranes for dyeing wastewater treatment. Recovered glass fibers (RGFs) obtained from fluidized-bed pyrolysis were incorporated into polyethersulfone (PES) membranes to tailor pore architecture and enhance mechanical robustness, followed by dopamine-assisted deposition to construct a hydration-enhanced antifouling interface. The optimized membrane with a glass fiber loading of 100 g·L −1 exhibited more than a twofold increase in water permeability compared to the pristine membrane, while consistently maintaining dye rejection >98% for macromolecular anionic dyes. AFM results revealed that the increased surface roughness was a key factor for the enhanced water permeability, while pore size distribution and zeta potential analysis confirmed that the synergistic regulation of RGF and SBMA improved dye rejection through size sieving and surface charge effects. Hydration-enhanced membranes achieved high dye rejection and substantially improved antifouling stability, extending the continuous operating duration by ~20× compared with pristine PES membranes. This work provides a scalable and practically viable route for integrating composite-waste thermochemical recycling with membrane engineering, offering a cost-effective solution for long-term, high-flux dye wastewater treatment and advancing the sustainable management of end-of-life wind turbine blades.

Oil shale, as an abundant unconventional energy resource, offers significant potential for mitigating the shortage of conventional fossil fuels. However, challenges such as the complex and costly synthesis of catalysts capable of being injected into the shale reservoirs, along with an insufficient understanding of the underlying catalytic mechanisms, continue to hinder the commercial application of in-situ catalytic pyrolysis. In this study, we synthesized three metal-loaded silica nanoparticle catalysts (M/SiO 2 , M=Ni, Mn and Cu), and comprehensively investigated their catalytic efficiency in oil shale pyrolysis under varying conditions. GC-MS and simulated distillation results demonstrated that the pyrolysis of kerogen was significantly facilitated by the M/SiO 2 catalysts. This enhancement leads to increased concentrations of hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane in the shale gas, while the quality of the product oil is also improved. Notably, Cu/SiO 2 exhibited the best catalytic performance, boosting the yields of product oil and gas by 9.38% compared to non-catalytic pyrolysis. Kinetic analysis indicated a reduction of 13.83% in the average apparent activation energy. Furthermore, semi-coke characterization revealed an approximately 15.55% decrease in weight loss, with the calorific value dropping from 1727 J/g in non-catalyst pyrolysis to 1444 J/g in the catalyst-assisted system. These findings underscore the excellent catalytic performance of the metal-loaded SiO 2 catalysts and provide crucial insights for optimizing in-situ oil shale conversion and product upgrading.

In the present study, γ-valerolactone (GVL) is firstly reported to be converted into aromatic hydrocarbons through catalytic pyrolysis . The catalysts and reaction conditions are both critical in maximizing the hydrocarbon selectivity . Four zeolites , i.e. MCM-41, β-zeolite, ZSM-5 and HZSM-5 were tested in this work, among which HZSM-5 (Si/Al = 25) was found to be the most effective catalyst in both reactivity and selectivity. Under the reaction temperature of 500 °C, the highest carbon yield of 56.71% of aromatics was achieved from GVL with HZSM-5 (Si/Al = 25) as catalyst. Moreover, the HZSM-5 catalyst was recycled for five times without significant decrease in product selectivity.
