Cooperative adsorption and degradation in situ, known as “hook and destroy” strategy, is an appealing idea to scavenge pollutants from water efficiently. However, commercial high-adsorption-capacity adsorbents are usually based on activated carbon, which is easily damaged in the pollutant degradation process, resulting in decreasing of the adsorption performance, while the adsorption capability of most inorganic adsorbents is inadequate for practical applications. To address the issues, we prepared a novel mesoporous titanium dioxide (m-TiO 2 ) by facile one-step hydrolysis method at room temperature. The m-TiO 2 exhibits both high adsorption capacity and short equilibrium time for a wide range of pollutants, such as dyes, pharmaceuticals and pesticides, due to its large surface area and abundant functional groups. The surface charge of the m-TiO 2 adsorbent can be regulated by adjusting the acidity and alkalinity of preparation conditions, hence the m-TiO 2 is capable of adsorbing either positively or negatively charged pollutants. The versatility for adsorption of diverse contaminants was demonstrated in the experiment of purifying lake water with multiple pollutants. More significant, the m-TiO 2 can be regenerated in minutes by in-situ degrading the adsorbed molecules using common oxidants, such as hypochlorite, the active ingredient of disinfectants. The adsorption performance has little deterioration in at least five successive cycles of adsorption and degradation. Considering the excellent adsorption performance, wide applicability and high recyclability, the mesoporous TiO 2 offers a sustainable approach to increasingly complex water environmental problems.

In this study, a gas sensor based on TiO 2 /WO 3 ·H 2 O (TW) heterojunction with high sensitivity, excellent selectivity and long-term stability for ammonia (NH 3 ) detection was successfully prepared by hydrothermal method . Compared with WO 3 ·H 2 O and TiO 2 , TW heterojunction shows excellent selective to NH 3 and the response varies by 3 orders of magnitude to 500 ppm NH 3 at room temperature (RT, 25 ± 3 °C). The lowest response limit of TW is 0.5 ppm and the response/recovery time is 2.35 s/1.95 s. The main reason for improving the performance of TW heterojunction to NH 3 detection is that TiO 2 nanoparticles cause more oxygen free radicals on the surface of TW heterojunction, which can react with more NH 3 molecules to release more electrons. Therefore, heterojunction structure increases the electrons and reduces the width of electron depletion layer in TW gas sensor. In addition, TW heterojunction has small and uniform particle size which can provide more active sites for the reaction between NH 3 and oxygen free radicals to release more electrons. This work provides a heterojunction structure composed of TiO 2 and WO 3 ·H 2 O to effectively improve the performance of sensor for NH 3 detection at RT, which is beneficial to the development of high-performance gas sensors.

The anthropogenic release of highly toxic heavy metals into the environment presents a huge challenge for ecosystems and human society. Recoverable and efficient adsorption materials could be obtained by trapping inorganic adsorbents (e.g., TiO 2 nanoparticles and rectorite (REC)), in a natural polymer matrix. In this study, a series of cellulose-TiO 2 /REC composite nanofibrous mats were fabricated via electrospinning. The interactions between inorganic adsorbents and cellulose molecules improved the thermal stability , surface area, tensile strength and adsorption capacity of the mats. We focused on the adsorption of Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ from acidic solutions onto cellulose-TiO 2 /REC composite nanofibrous mats in multiple systems because the magnitudes of heavy metal concentrations in wastewater typically varied. The maximum total adsorption capacity of 69.81 mg/g was obtained by Cellulose-TiO 2 /REC 2:1 nanofibrous mats. The composite nanofibrous mats successfully trapped TiO 2 nanoparticles, and the obtained cellulose-TiO 2 /REC nanofibrous mats could be used to remove heavy metals from acidic wastewater.

The uniform growth of metal oxides into mesoporous nanostructures with controllable orientations is challenging but of significance. Here, a polydopamine (PDA)-induced oriented growth strategy is proposed to uniformly grow metal ions into mesoporous metal oxides with controllable orientation. Two mesoporous nanostructures (3D hierarchical dendritic nanostructures and 2D nanosheets) were constructed by this strategy. It is worth emphasizing that the 3D hierarchical mesoporous nanostructures (DMSNs@TiO2) are formed by constructing single-layered porous TiO2 in dendritic mesoporous tunnels, which is different from the previously reported generation of hierarchical pores inside frameworks or accumulation of various channels. In such a pore system, small pores are connected by large pores, thereby enhancing the accessibility of pores. DMSNs@TiO2 with a large surface area and connected hierarchical pore structure exhibit highly improved phosphopeptide enrichment performance compared with commercial TiO2 and single-pored TiO2. Especially for real samples such as human saliva, DMSNs@TiO2 captured 49 endogenous phosphopeptides from 1 μL of saliva, demonstrating their broad prospects in phosphopeptidomics analysis.

Solar to hydrogen (H2) conversion systems based on carbon nanomaterials have shown great potentials in the clean energy field recently. However, for most systems, energy level alignments and light-induced redox processes are still unclear, which hinder artificial designing for higher efficiency of solar energy conversion and further applications. Here we report 77% enhancement in the light-driven H2 generation efficiency of N,S co-doped carbon quantum dot (N,S-CQD) aqueous system by adding TiO2 nanoparticles. Using steady-state and transient spectroscopy, four specific energy levels of CQDs are confirmed with the band gaps of 3.55 eV (X4), 2.99 eV (X3), 2.76 eV (X2) and 1.75 eV (X1), respectively. The X2 energy band is highly active for H+ reduction with a longer lifetime of 13.38 ns. Moreover, the observed low efficiency of intrinsic transition from X3 to X2 band of N,S-CQDs accounts for the poor performance of solar to H2 conversion for pure N,S-CQDs based on H2 generation and detailed time-resolved spectroscopic results. The mechanism of H2 generation enhancement can be explained by multiple electron transfer processes between N,S-CQDs and TiO2 NPs where TiO2 NPs act as electron intermediates that efficiently transfer electrons from the inert band (X3) to the active band (X2) for H2 generation. This study enriches the fundamental understanding of N,S-CQDs and provides a new pathway toward high-performance N,S-CQD-based solar to H2 conversion systems.

Re-entrant geometries can effectively trap air pockets, increase air/liquid interface fraction, prevent the penetration of low surface tension organic liquids, and achieve super-oleophobic performance. However, the creation of re-entrant geometries usually involving expensive lithographic tools, or complicated chemical procedures, and cannot be applied on a large scale, such super-oleophobic surfaces are unsuitable for practical application. Constructing hierarchical micro/nanostructure on substrates is a feasible solution to achieve super-oleophobicity through facile spraying method. Herein, we report a super-oleophobic TiO 2 /SiO 2 composite coatings by taking advantage of an exceedingly simple spraying method. The dendritic structures produced by spraying the TiO 2 /SiO 2 mixture play the critical role in obtaining the re-entrant geometry required for oleophobic surface, and the introduction of micron-scale TiO 2 particles and nano-scale SiO 2 particles provide an enough dual-scale rough structure for the coating. The TiO 2 /SiO 2 composite coatings exhibit superior repellence to high and low surface tension liquids as well long-term durability. This design strategy may provide useful guidelines for the fabrication of particle-based spray-coated super-oleophobic surfaces.

Transition metal (M = Cu, Fe and Ni) modified TiO2 nanosheets were synthesized via a microwave assisted hydrothermal method. The as-fabricated catalysts were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), nitrogen adsorption–desorption, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), photoluminescence emission (PL), transient photocurrent–time curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results indicated that the loading of transition metals did not influence the crystal structure and morphology of anatase TiO2, while the specific surface area, the absorption in the visible region and the charge transfer were enhanced. In addition, photocatalytic nitrogen fixation over the transition metal modified TiO2 nanosheets was also evaluated. Under the irradiation of simulated sunlight, transition metal modified TiO2 exhibited better photocatalytic performance and stability than pristine TiO2. Among these samples, Cu/TiO2 with the optimal mass content of 1.0% achieved the best NH4+ generation performance and the evolution rate reached 6.78 mmol g−1 h−1 with the relative standard deviation of 2.33%. Furthermore, a plausible mechanism coupled with interfacial charge transfer (IFCT) over Cu modified TiO2 nanosheets was proposed in our present study.

The present study addresses the establishment of a highly reactive catalyst derived from Ti 3 C 2 T x (MXene), which is a graphitic carbon-supported TiO 2 hybrid nanostructure for photocatalytic and bacteriostatic applications. The graphitic carbon-supported TiO 2 nanoparticles, which were placed onto a Ti 3 C 2 T x backbone as ternary hybrids under the controlled oxidation of isopropylamine delaminated Ti 3 C 2 T x , were demonstrated to be semiconducting nanostructures. Beneficially, the oxygen-related vacancies in TiO 2 along with graphitic carbon support in the metallic Ti 3 C 2 T x heterostructures exhibited distinct methylene blue dye degradation under UV irradiation at a rate constant of ( k ) of 0.035 ± 0.003 min −1 . The demonstrated superior catalytic performance of the assembled hybrid structure was attributed to the formation of multiple interfacial junctions formed by graphitic carbon, TiO 2 nanoparticles, and Ti 3 C 2 T x , which created distinct intermediate energy levels for electron-hole pair separation and improved the catalytic performance. The synthesized hybrid nanostructures also exhibited excellent antibacterial activity; approximately 97.4% of E. coli was killed by the nanostructures under light exposure due to the excessive radicals that caused oxidative stress on bacterial cells. The developed hybrid nanostructures from the controlled oxidation of delaminated Ti 3 C 2 T x are expected to be superior materials for photocatalytic and bacteriostatic applications.

Compared with the highly active anatase TiO2, rutile TiO2 usually presents poor photocatalytic performance due to high electron–hole recombination. Herein, we propose a surface domain heterojunction (SDH) structure between adjacent micro-domains with and without chemisorbed chlorine on rutile TiO2, which utilizes the potential difference between these domains to form a built-in field that promotes charge separation. Single-crystal rutile TiO2 nanorods assembled into radial microspheres with SDHs were fabricated, and these exhibited excellent solar-driven photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, ∼8-fold higher than that of the pristine one. Experimental results and density functional theory calculations reveal that the exceptional photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the in situ formation of chemisorbed chlorine, which forms SDHs that separate electrons and holes efficiently and results in surface reconfiguration, exposing the tri-active sites, increasing the O-site active centers and enhancing the catalytic activity of the 4-coordinated (Ti4c) and 5-coordinated Ti sites (Ti5c). This SDH strategy can extend to other halogen elements and thus provides an universal approach for the rational design of high-efficiency TiO2 photocatalysts toward sustainable solar-fuel evolution.

Herein, a facile in situ sulfation strategy was employed for modifying Cu/TiO2 catalysts using CuSO4 as the precursor to enhance the performance of dichloromethane (DCM) catalytic combustion. The experimental results revealed that the modified samples exhibited superior DCM conversion and COx yield compared to the pristine Cu/TiO2 catalyst. Among these, the 1CuSO4/TiO2 sample showed the best activity with near 90% conversion during 50 h of reaction at 275 °C. Characterization results showed that the in situ sulfation modification could considerably improve the catalyst acidity, benefiting the dissociative adsorption of DCM with C–Cl rupture. Notably, the surface sulfate groups provided abundant Brønsted acidic sites that release surface Cl species in the form of HCl at relatively low temperatures, preventing the surface Cu species from chloride poisoning. With excess CuSO4 addition, the intermediates derived from DCM dechlorination could not be decomposed in time due to the decreased reducibility, leading to their deactivation due to coke deposition. The superior performance of 1CuSO4/TiO2 is attributed to the balance achieved between acidity and redox capacity for DCM catalytic decomposition. Moreover, it was found that CuSO4/TiO2 could partially replace noble-metal Ru/TiO2 catalysts and achieve comparable performances. The findings of this study will aid the development of CVOCs catalytic combustion catalysts with good activity and stability.

A novel hollow-sphere structure of tungsten trioxide and titanium dioxide (WO 3 /TiO 2 ) heterojunction was prepared by using a combination of hydrothermal and calcination method. The prepared WO 3 /TiO 2 heterojunction was characterized with scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray electron spectrometer (XPS), etc. The results showed that 10 % WO 3 /TiO 2 (the mass ratio of W in WO 3 to Ti in TiO 2 was 10 %) has a hollow spherical structure, and the bandgap energy of WO 3 /TiO 2 sample was lower than that of TiO 2 . WO 3 /TiO 2 heterojunction showed an improved photocatalytic performance, compared to pure TiO 2 and WO 3 as well as ZnO and SnO 2 , in degrading a high concentration dye methylene blue (MB) and a micro-organic pollutant metoprolol (MET) under visible-light. MB and MET removal efficiencies could reach 87.8 % and 67.1 %, respectively, within 150 min, by 10 % WO 3 /TiO 2 sample. The relevant photocatalysis mechanisms of the WO 3 /TiO 2 photocatalyst were revealed and discussed. TiO 2 in a heterojunction acted as a photo-generated holes acceptor, effectively decreasing the recombination of photo-generated carriers and improving photocatalytic performance. Our results indicate that the hollow spherical WO 3 /TiO 2 heterojunction is more promising candidate for wastewater treatment in practical applications.

The photocathodic protection is a promising technology for corrosion protection by utilizing the solar energy. Herein, a typical metal-organic framework (MOF), NH 2 -MIL-125 is introduced to construct MOF/semiconductor heterostructure via a simple two-step method. The composites, based both on TiO 2 nanotubes and coatings, exhibit improved photocathodic protection performance under visible light irradiation . The results reveal that the NH 2 -MIL-125/TiO 2 heterojunction significantly suppresses the recombination of photoinduced electron-hole pairs, ultimately achieves efficient photocathodic protection for 304SS . This research highlights the superiority of the MOF/semiconductor composites on the photocathodic protection and the universality of decorating MOF on different TiO 2 structures.
