Ordered mesoporous ceria (meso-CeO2) was fabricated by nanocasting employing Ia3d mesoporous silica KIT-6 as the template. For comparison, ceria nanoparticles (nano-CeO2) with non-ordered mesoporous were also synthesized via a sol–gel method. Polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers were used as stabilizing agents to prepare a dispersed Pt nanoparticle colloidal solution. Afterward, the obtained well-dispersed Pt nanoparticles were immobilized on meso-CeO2 and nano-CeO2, respectively. The prepared samples were characterized through several techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and energy dispersion X-ray analysis (EDX) with mapping. The results revealed that the as-prepared meso-CeO2 has high crystallinity, a relatively small crystalline size, a well-ordered mesoporous structure and high surface area of 115.3 m2 g−1. In addition, the Pt/meso-CeO2 catalyst showed relatively uniform distribution of Pt nanoparticles with small sizes (∼4 nm). The catalytic performances of the as-synthesized catalysts were evaluated relying on the reduction of 4-nitrophenol monitored by UV-vis spectra. It was found that Pt/meso-CeO2 exhibited better catalytic activity compared with Pt/nano-CeO2. Besides, Pt/meso-CeO2 possessed good reusability and maintained a conversion of no less than 90% even after five cycles.

Low-cost metallic nanoparticles as catalysts with good performance are highly desired for the development of hydrogen storage materials . In this work, ceria-doped CuNi nanoparticles were successfully immobilized on the surfaces of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) by a simple co-reduction approach in aqueous solution at room temperature, characterized by ICP-OES, XRD , TEM, SEM-EDS and XPS techniques. The as-synthesized CuNi-CeO 2 /rGO nanocomposites with various metal contents had been employed as heterogeneous catalysts for the hydrolytic dehydrogenation of ammonia borane (NH 3 BH 3 , AB) under mild conditions. The optimal catalyst of Cu 0.8 Ni 0.2 -CeO 2 /rGO with CeO 2 content of 13.9 mol% exhibited an excellent catalytic activity with the exceedingly high TOF value of 34.4·mol H2 ·mol catalyst −1 ·min −1 at 298 K. The apparent activation energy was calculated to be 19.1 kJ mol −1 , even lower than most of noble-metal-based catalysts for AB dehydrogenation. The detailed kinetics of AB hydrolysis catalyzed by Cu 0.8 Ni 0.2 -CeO 2 /rGO had been investigated on different concentrations of catalyst, substrate and temperatures. Moreover, the obtained in situ hydrogen from AB hydrolysis can be further applied to reduce 4-nitrophenol with a high TOF value of 8.1 min −1 at room temperature. The high catalytic activity of Cu 0.8 Ni 0.2 -CeO 2 /rGO would be contributed to the small size of CuNi-CeO 2 NPs, metal-metal synergy, and the metal-support interaction.

In this manuscript, (8YSZ) 1- x (CeO 2 ) x (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.6), belonging to the cubic fluorite structure, was prepared by a co-precipitation method. We highlighted the effect of a dense diffusion barrier conductivity on the sensing performance by choosing the lowest conductivity of (8YSZ) 0.4 (CeO 2 ) 0.6 as a dense diffusion barrier compared with the highest conductivity of (8YSZ) 0.9 (CeO 2 ) 0.1 published. A sensor was fabricated using bonding Pt paste. Limiting current ( I L ) platforms were obtained at different oxygen concentrations x (O 2 ) in a temperature range of 720–900 °C. The oxygen sensor had a smaller oxygen measurement range of 0–10% at 850 °C compared to (8YSZ) 0.9 (CeO 2 ) 0.1 as a diffusion layer . These results showed that the higher oxide ion conductivity of the diffusion layer can achieve a wider oxygen measurement range, which can guide the search for new mixed conductor with higher oxide ion conductivity. The sensing performance of the oxygen sensor was not influenced by p (H 2 O) and x (CO 2 ), which showed the sensor had a strong selectivity towards oxygen. Furthermore, the limiting current of the sensor remained stable during 144 h of detection.

A novel nanofiller-reinforced SLIPS is developed on AZ31 Mg alloys. • CeO 2 @PDA/h-BN nanofillers enhance the corrosion resistance and self-healing properties of coatings. • Self-healing ability is due to rapid lubricant redistribution and passive film formation. • The coating shows better long-term corrosion protection than conventional SLIPSs. Conventional slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have emerged as an effective strategy to protect Mg alloys from corrosion. However, their anti-corrosion and self-healing performances remain insufficient for long-term service. Therefore, multifunctional CeO 2 @PDA/h-BN nanofillers were incorporated into liquid lubricant to fabricate nanofiller-reinforced SLIPSs (CeO 2 @PDA/h-BN-SLIPSs). In particular, this study systematically investigated influences of nanofiller concentrations on surface morphology, hydrophobicity, and electrochemical behavior. CeO 2 @PDA/h-BN-SLIPS-8, prepared at a concentration of 8 mg/mL, displayed the lowest corrosion current density (8.22 × 10 -11 A/cm 2 ) and the highest impedance modulus (9.06 × 10 8 Ω cm 2 at 0.01 Hz). This was ascribed to the synergistic effects of high surface hydrophobicity provided by a lubricant layer, tortuous diffusion pathways provided by h-BN nanosheets, ion-exchange property of MgAl-LDH, and active corrosion inhibition of CeO 2 . In addition, scanning vibration electrode technique (SVET) analysis confirmed good self-healing behavior of CeO 2 @PDA/h-BN-SLIPS-8, arising from both rapid lubricant redistribution and formation of protective cerium-based passive films. Overall, this study provides an effective strategy for fabrication of robust anti-corrosive and self-healing SLIPSs, offering enhanced corrosion protection for Mg alloys in industry.

Photocatalytic conversion of CO 2 into high valuable fuels has attracted great interest, especially for the multi-carbon products. We design and synthesize a cerium oxide (CeO 2 ) photocatalyst with cooperatively tailored N-doping and surface frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs), wherein the FLPs are constructed by Lewis acidic coordinatively unsaturated Ce 3+ species and the adjacent Lewis basic Ce-OH groups. The synergistic effects of the FLPs and N-doping cooperatively promote the light absorption, CO 2 bonding and activation, multiple proton-electron transfer processes and C-C coupling reactions, thereby improving the productivity and selectivity of photoreduction of CO 2 to high-value hydrocarbons. The finely surface engineered CeO 2 photocatalysts achieve 86.86% selectivity of C 1 (CO, CH 4 ) and C 2 (C 2 H 4 and C 2 H 2 ) hydrocarbon products, and the selectivity for the C 2 products reaches to 41.07%. It proves that the ceria catalyst is promising toward practical production of high-value multicarbon fuels using solar energy.

The conversion of the greenhouse gas CO 2 represents a pragmatic and environmentally friendly approach. However, the substantial energy demands of the reaction hamper its widespread application. Here, we designed an efficient catalyst prepared by Ce-MOF and ZIF-67 precursor, namely Co/CeO 2 , for photothermal CO 2 methanation under light and auxiliary heating. CeO 2 synthesized by Ce-MOF has a good structure and abundant oxygen vacancies, meanwhile, Co has abundant active sites and strong adsorption capacity and is well-dispersed on CeO 2 . As a result, the catalyst exhibits high CH 4 yield of 885.27 mmol⋅g −1 ⋅h −1 and CO yield of 24.5 mmol⋅g −1 ⋅h −1 . Moreover, it has good selectivity and catalytic durability. Through the analysis of the reaction pathway under the conditions of photothermal catalysis, the hydrogenation reaction of formate can efficiently generate CH 4 and H 2 O due to the promotion of hot carriers. This work demonstrated the advantages of photothermal co-catalysis and provides a potential strategy for efficient CO 2 reduction.

Dual activation of molecular and lattice oxygen is an important step in the catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds. Herein, CeO 2 was derived from MOF as an electron donor support to develop a co-catalyst with Pt-Pd alloy nanoparticles (Pt-Pd/CeO 2 ). The Prepared Pt-Pd/CeO 2 exhibits excellent catalytic activity towards toluene oxidation, showing a turnover frequency (TOF 0.26 s −1 ) higher than those of Pt/CeO 2 (0.05 s −1 ) and Pd/CeO 2 (0.02 s −1 ). Several in situ experimental techniques and density functional theory calculations have revealed that the introduction of Pd valence electrons can intensify the electronic metal-support interactions (EMSIs) effects of Pt-Pd/CeO 2 catalysts, which can weaken the Ce-O bond, thereby promoting the production and circulation of lattice oxygen and oxygen vacancies, and modulating the d -band centre to enhance the adsorption and activation of reactants. This study presents a comprehensive investigation of toluene oxidation on alloy-supported catalysts, providing practical guidance for designing reliable catalysts suitable for industrial applications.

The conversion of carbon dioxide to dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is an attractive process, but thermodynamic limitations of the reaction hinder its further development. Herein, a simple solution coprecipitation strategy for the synthesis of a series of Ce–metal organic framework (MOF)-derived CeO 2 nanoparticles is proposed to rapidly break the thermodynamic equilibrium and achieve highly efficient activation of CO 2 /CH 3 OH under photothermal system. The CeO 2 –M–5, Ce(NO 3 ) 3 ·6H 2 O/2-methylimidazoles molar ratio of 1:5, exhibits the highest DMC yield of 2.52 mmol DMC g −1 cat under photothermal system, higher 3.26 times than CeO 2 –C (nanoparticle by high-temperature calcination). Moreover, the DMC yield of CeO 2 –M–5 nanoparticles increases by 10% under the photothermal synergistic system compared to thermocatalytic system. This superior catalytic performance is attributed to the abundant Lewis acid–base sites, excellent light absorption capacity, and hydrophobicity. Besides, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy demonstrates that Ce–MOF-derived CeO 2 nanoparticles can effectively activate CO 2 /CH 3 OH to enhance the formation of the key intermediate methyl carbonate upon light irradiation. Finally, combining characterization and experimental results, the reaction mechanism of photothermal catalysis of CO 2 /CH 3 OH for DMC synthesis over Ce–MOF-derived CeO 2 nanoparticles is proposed. This work would provide new insights into the rational design of an effective catalyst for CO 2 to produce high value-added chemicals.

For yolk-shell structured nanoreactors , multiple active components can be precisely positioned on core and/or shell that can afford more exposed accessible active sites, and the internal voids can guarantee sufficient contact of reactants and catalysts. In this work, a unique yolk–shell structured nanoreactor [email protected] 3 O 4 /CeO 2 @mSiO 2 was fabricated and applied as nanozyme for biosensing. The [email protected] 3 O 4 /CeO 2 @mSiO 2 exhibited superior peroxidase-like activity with a lower Michaelis constant ( K m ) and a higher affinity to H 2 O 2 . The enhanced peroxidase-like activity was attributed to the unique structure and the synergistic effects between the multiple active components. Colorimetric essays were developed based on [email protected] 3 O 4 /CeO 2 @mSiO 2 for the ultra-sensitive sensing of glucose in the range of 3.9 nM–1.03 mM with the limit of detection as low as 3.2 nM. In the detection of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), the cooperation between G6PD and [email protected] 3 O 4 /CeO 2 @mSiO 2 triggered the redox cycling between NAD + and NADH, thereby achieving the amplification of the signal and enhancing the sensitivity of the assay. The assay showed superior performance as compared to other methods with linear response of 5.0 × 10 −3 –15 mU mL −1 and lower detection limit of 3.6 × 10 −3 mU mL −1 . The fabricated novel multi-enzyme catalytical cascade reaction system allowed rapid and sensitive biodetection, demonstrating its potential in biosensors and biomedical applications.

A Fe-doped CeO 2 was fabricated for catalytic ozonation of Amoxicillin (AMX), and the catalytic mechanisms were explored in this study. Under optimal conditions (the initial solution pH of 7.0, FC-0.3 dosage of 0.5 g/L, O 3 dosage of 4 mg/min), the AMX and TOC removal by the optimal material (FC-0.3, at Fe/Ce atomic ratio of 0.3) reached 98.1 % at 24 min and 55.2 % at 36 min, respectively. Improved the AMX mineralization efficiency by 3.7 times. The experiments and theoretical calculation reveal the mechanisms of promoted catalytic ozonation by FC-0.3: 1) Highly abundant surface-active sites (i.e., –OH) enabled the adsorption of H 2 O and O 3 , which was favorable to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and improved the reaction probability for ROS and contaminants. 2) The synergistic effect between Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ and Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox couples accelerated the electron transfer and formation of ROS. More than 42 % of •OH was generated in the presence of FC-0.3, and the •OH, •O 2 − and 1 O 2 were the main ROS that contributed to AMX degradation. The surface OH groups played a key role in the catalytic ozonation. The oxygen vacancies (OVs) played an important role in electron transfer, Ce and Fe were the active sites of electrons transfer following the sequence of (Ce 3+ + Fe 2+ ) → (Ce 4+ + Fe 3+ ) → (Ce 3+ + Fe 2+ ) redox reaction. The degradation pathway investigation and toxicity evaluation revealed that some more toxic intermediates were generated during the ozonation process, and sufficient mineralization is required to meet safe discharge. This study provides reference for the synthesis of new catalysts and insight into the reaction mechanisms in the heterogeneous catalytic ozonation process.

Metal oxide-oxide interface on supported catalyst has been rarely studied due to the complex interfacial structure and synthetic challenge. Herein, different Ag-supported CeO 2 /Co 3 O 4 samples with various covered-state of CeO 2 were prepared for catalytic soot oxidation. In comparison, catalytic activity was significantly improved by grafting CeO 2 on Co 3 O 4 , in which the best performing Ag/CoCe-2 exhibited remarkable catalytic performance towards soot oxidation with a T 50 of 290.5 ℃ under 10 % O 2 /N 2 . Catalyst characterization investigated by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), quasi in-situ X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), in-situ Raman, etc. revealed that this outstanding promotion in catalytic activity can be principally ascribed to the formation of the CeO 2 /Co 3 O 4 interface. An appropriate CeO 2 dosage maximized the contact and interaction between Co 3 O 4 and CeO 2 , resulting in the largest CeO 2 /Co 3 O 4 interface featured with abundant generated superoxide species and activated surface lattice oxygen. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also carried out for the oxygen vacancy formation energy, Gibbs free energy, etc. In presence of the CeO 2 /Co 3 O 4 interface, a charge density redistribution around the adsorbed reactants at oxygen vacancies could be formed, owing to the efficient charge transfer enhanced by the electron-appealing effect. The change in electronic structure favored reducing the oxygen vacancy formation energy and boosting the lattice oxygen activation induced by the hybridized Co-O-Ce bonds, finally lowering the adsorption and activation barriers for reactive species and accelerating the reaction kinetics.

In this paper, degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in a circulating dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma system with Cu-CeO 2 @CA composite films addition was investigated. The Cu-CeO 2 @CA films were synthesized through hydrothermal method, and the samples were characterized by SEM , XRD, EDS, FT-IR and Raman spectra analysis. The obtained results show that there was synergistic effect of the DBD plasma and the Cu-CeO 2 @CA films on the CIP degradation and mineralization. The optimal performance was obtained under the condition of 5 wt% Cu-CeO 2 nanoparticles doping in the composite film. Besides the effect of the DBD plasma, the Cu-CeO 2 @CA films could drive the O 3 decomposition, photocatalysis and then the more reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation. The presence of the main active species and their contributions to the CIP degradation were determined by electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis and radical quenching experiments. Methods of UV–vis spectrum, three-dimensional fluorescence spectrum and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) were used to analyze the CIP decomposition process. The prepared Cu-CeO 2 @CA composite films had certain stability in the four cycles of application and the film catalyst was convenient for recycling. The toxicity evaluation results indicated the decline of the solution toxicity after treating in the Cu-CeO 2 @CA/DBD system.
