A series of anatase TiO 2 @MIL-101(Cr) was synthesized using the solvothermal method for photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A (BPA). The characterization of the composites showed that they had an octahedral shape that was similar to that of MIL-101(Cr), but the particle size was reduced to about 300–500 nm. The amount and surface area of the TiO 2 in the composites jointly influenced the photocatalytic degradation; in optimal conditions, 59 % TiO 2 @MIL-101(Cr) could achieve 99.4 % BPA degradation in 240 min under UV irradiation. This superior photocatalytic performance was the result of the effective separation of electron-hole pairs and a narrow band gap. Moreover, the optimal composite exhibited excellent stability, indicating its suitability for reuse. Reasonable pathways of BPA degradation were proposed based on the detected intermediates during the degradation, where the oxidative radical O 2 − played a dominant role.

A novel photodegradable Nano-G/TiO 2 /PVC composite film was prepared by codoping nano-graphite (Nano-G) and TiO 2 photocatalyst in Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic. The Characterization tests were performed by using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and physical and mechanical properties. Compared with TiO 2 /PVC, Nano-G/PVC and PVC film, the Nano-G/TiO 2 /PVC composite film showed higher photodegradability. The weight loss rates of Nano-G/PVC (Nano-G 1 wt%), TiO 2 /PVC (TiO 2 1 wt%) and Nano-G/TiO 2 /PVC (Nano-G 1 wt%, TiO 2 1 wt%) films after the UV irradiation for 30 h were 7.68%, 8.94% and 17.24%, respectively, while that of PVC was only 2.12%. For the Nano-G/TiO 2 /PVC composite film, the optimal doping amount of nano-graphite is 1 wt%. The decline rates of Mw and Mn of Nano-G/TiO 2 /PVC (Nano-G 1 wt%, TiO 2 1 wt%) composite film were 12.93% and 61.97%, respectively, which were much higher than that of PVC. Nano-graphite can effectively improve the migration and separation of TiO 2 photogenerated electrons, improving the photodegradation rate of PVC. The mechanism of the Nano-G/TiO 2 /PVC composite film photocatalytic degradation was proposed. The photocatalytic technology is a feasible and effective way to solve "white pollution".

Nanostructured N-doped TiO 2 photocatalyst has been prepared via a new approach from Ti-based MOF[NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti)] precursor. The success of N doping enhances light absorption and narrows the bandgap. Moreover, the as-prepared nanostructure is constructed with tiny nanoparticles and resembles a pie-like morphology inherited from the MOF, which accelerates electron transfer. Hence, as a photocatalyst for the degradation of methylene blue(MB) under visible light irradiation, the N-doped TiO 2 (N-TiO 2 ) nanostructure shows higher photocatalytic activity with a reaction rate constant of 0.018 min −1 than that of the TiO 2 -P25 and TiO 2 under the visible light.

Isopropanol is frequently employed as the electron donor to facilitate hole transfer and promote photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production. However, the role of alcohols can be more complicated due to the interaction with TiO 2 . According to a comparison of aliphatic, aromatic and aromatic heterocyclic alcohols on photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production on TiO 2 , furfural alcohol (FFA) displays superior capability to others. The presence of alcohols with aromatic structures can significantly accelerate formation and suppress decomposition of H 2 O 2 . Moreover, furfural alcohol tends to form more stable complexes on TiO 2 surface, which can negatively shift the flat band position, induce visible light activity, and boost two-electron reduction of oxygen. The altered electron transfer pathway for H 2 O 2 production was indicated by the Koutecky-Levich plots, the less pH dependence, and the signals of peroxide species in Raman spectra. This study brings insights for modulating the interfacial oxygen reduction and designing highly efficient and selective H 2 O 2 production photocatalytic systems.

The presence of sulfonamides (SAs) in water has received increasing attention due to the risk to ecosystems. The adsorption and photocatalysis performance for sulfamerazine (SMZ) of Bi2O3–TiO2supported on powdered activated carbon (Bi2O3–TiO2/PAC) nanoparticles was evaluated. The amount of doped Bi2O3not only influenced the photocatalytic performance but also impacted the adsorption capacity. The adsorption mass transfer mechanism of Bi2O3–TiO2/PAC was elucidated and is further discussed in combination with the photocatalytic mechanism. It was indicated that Bi2O3–TiO2/PAC(10%–700 °C) performed best, and the SMZ removal by the adsorption–photocatalysis of Bi2O3–TiO2/PAC(10%–700 °C) reached 95.5%. Adsorption onto active sites was a major adsorption step, and external diffusion was assisted. Superoxide radical (●O2−) and hole (h+) were identified as the major reactive oxygen species (ROS) for SMZ removal. Benzene ring fracture, SO2extrusion and nitrogenated SMZ were proposed as the main pathways for photocatalysis. Meanwhile, alkaline conditions enhanced photocatalytic performance, while contrary effects were observed for adsorption. The adsorption–photocatalysis removal performance for SMZ in lake water was better than that for river water. It can be generalized for the potential application of photocatalysis coupling with adsorption to remove refractory antibiotics in water. Keywords:photocatalysis;adsorption;solar irradiation;ternary composite;sulfamerazine

Dehydrogenation of methylcyclohexane (MCH) is conceived as a key reaction for the hydrogen economy. In this study, TiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 supports with different TiO 2 loading are prepared by vapor deposition on γ- Al 2 O 3 , which are further used to prepare Pt/TiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 catalysts by Pt impregnation for MCH dehydrogenation reaction. TiO 2 modification of γ-Al 2 O 3 reduces the density of weak acid sites, promotes the electron density on Pt and enhances the H spillover on Pt, leading to enhanced dehydrogenation activity. The catalyst using the 10 wt% TiO 2 modified γ-Al 2 O 3 substrate has the smallest Pt particle size and the highest methylcyclohexane conversion. This work, therefore, provides a potentially generalizable approach to enhance MCH dehydrogenation via support engineering.

As an emerging semiconductor different from regular white TiO 2 , black TiO 2 has attracted intensive attention on visible light driven photocatalysis for degrading dyes, but rarely for degradation of antibiotics. In this study, black anatase-TiO 2 was demonstrated to be an effective catalyst for tetracycline (TC) visible light photodegradation. 66.2% removal efficiency of TC was achieved over black TiO 2 under visible light illumination, while white TiO 2 and N-doped TiO 2 exhibited 43.4% and 59.6% removal efficiencies, respectively. Furthermore, only ⋅O 2 − radicals played an important role in TC photodegradation over white TiO 2 , whereas both ⋅O 2 − and h + were responsible for the degradation over black TiO 2 and N-doped TiO 2 . Different from white TiO 2 for visible light photocatalytic TC degradation that follows photosensitization, the visible light photodegrataion over black TiO 2 is due to photoexcitation.

The Cu 2 O/TiO 2 p-n heterojunction composite photoelectrodes were prepared by depositing Cu 2 O nanoparticles on the surface of TiO 2 nanotubes via anodic oxidation and constant current deposition. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analyses showed that Cu 2 O nanoparticles not only deposited on the surface of TiO 2 nanotube array, but also on the wall of TiO 2 nanotubes. The Cu 2 O deposition amount could be adjusted by changing the deposition time. The photoelectrochemical cathodic protection (PECCP) performance of the prepared photoelectrodes for 316L stainless steel (SS) was tested under visible light. The constant current deposition time had a significant effect on the PECCP performance of Cu 2 O/TiO 2 -X photoelectrodes and Cu 2 O/TiO 2 -20 had the best PECCP performance for the coupled 316L SS. This was attributed to the appropriate amount and thickness of Cu 2 O to form p-n heterojunctions with TiO 2 , in which separation of the photogenerated carriers was accelerated and transfer of the photogenerated electrons to 316L SS for PECCP was facilitated.

A series of Co–P–TiO2 nanocomposite coatings were prepared via pulsed electrodeposition technique. TiO2 nanoparticles were embedded into the coating matrix using TiO2 sol. The phase constituents of nanocomposites were identified using X-ray diffraction. The surface morphology of nanocomposites was obtained through scanning electron microscopy. Wear tests and corrosion tests were conducted to determine the coating performance. Electrochemical characterization was performed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis. The nanocomposite coatings made via conventional pulse electrodeposition had a relatively ordered surface morphology and enhanced mechanical behaviour, which is associated with the increased strengthening effect of embedded nanoparticles. When applying a pulse reverse current, the Co–P–TiO2 nanocomposite coating had improved corrosion resistance owing to its smooth and uniform surface morphology.

Exploring photoactive biotic–abiotic conjugations is of great importance for a variety of applications, but it remains difficult to probe the interfacial transfer of photoinduced charge carriers. In this work, Kelvin probe force microscopy, together with fluorescence imaging technique, were used to visually observe the spatial distribution and interfacial behavior of photocarriers in Microcystis aeruginosa/TiO2 hybrids. Experimental investigations suggested that photosynthetic microalgae cells were prone to trap photoholes from TiO2 photocatalysts. Oxygen vacancy defects in semiconductor exhibited significant impact on the charge migration, as the surface photovoltage of hydrogenated TiO2/microalgae hybrid was much higher than the pristine system. Profiting from the bioenhanced charge separation, biotic–abiotic architecture presented remarkably increased activity for photocatalytic inactivation of microalgae microorganisms. This work not only highlights the visual techniques for understanding the charge transfer around biotic–abiotic interface, but also provides a bioenhanced conjugation for the photocatalytic elimination of microorganisms in water treatment applications.

To solve the aggregation problem of TiO 2 nanomaterials and improve the catalytic efficiency, F-doped TiO 2 /exfoliated bentonite (TF/EB) composite was prepared by dispersing F-doped TiO 2 (TF) nanoparticles on an exfoliated bentonite (EB) using a facile sol–gel method. The exfoliated bentonite was prepared by liquid-exfoliation method from the natural bentonite (B). The prepared samples were applied for toluene degradation in gas phase under UV and visible light irradiation. The as-prepared TF/EB composite exhibited higher toluene degradation efficiency than that of pure TiO 2 , F-doped TiO 2 and TF/B composite. Results indicated that the calcination temperature and the initial F/Ti atom ratio of reaction precursors greatly affected the photocatalytic activity towards toluene degradation. The best photocatalytic performance was obtained by the sample calcinated at 400 °C with an initial F/Ti atom ratio of 5%. The improved photocatalytic performance is ascribed to a series of benefits introduced by F-doping and exfoliation process. The presence of F - ions increases the percentage of exposed reactive {0 0 1} facets on TiO 2 . Moreover, F - ions incorporated into the TiO 2 lattice generate oxygen vacancies and Ti 3+ defects, which influence the transfer and migration of the photoinduced charge carriers and induce a visible-light photocatalytic activity . Furthermore, the electrostatic interaction of negatively charged exfoliated bentonite surface leads to a more efficient separation of charge carriers.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanomaterials have attracted much interest in life science and biological fields because of their excellent photocatalytic activity and good biocompatibility. However, owing to its wide band gap, photocatalysis of TiO2 can be only triggered by UV light. The limited transparent depth of UV light and the generated reactive oxygen species (ROSs) cause inflammation response of skin tissue, thus posing two major challenges in the photocatalytic application of TiO2-based materials in drug delivery and other biotechnology fields. Here, we propose an upconversion-related strategy to enable the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanotubes in near-infrared light and apply the system as a controllable drug delivery platform. More importantly, the ROS-induced cytotoxicity and the preleaching of payloads are significantly reduced on the as-proposed amphiphilic TiO2 nanotubes. The hydrophobic monolayers are served as a “cap” to provide protection for ROS-induced inflammation and long-term storability. This amphiphilic drug delivery system broadens the potential applications of TiO2-based nanomaterials in biomedicine.
