Si@SiO2 nanowires/carbon textiles cable-type anodes for high-capacity reversible lithium-ion batteries

Dongsheng Tan,Bin Liu,Di Chen,Guozhen Shen

To fulfil the increasing demands for high-efficiency next-generation energy storage systems, different electrode matrixes have been designed to achieve the desired batteries with high energy density and long cycle life. Herein, we fabricated novel binder-free Si@SiO2 nanowires/carbon textiles cable-type anodes for Li-ion batteries applications. The half-cells based on the above electrodes delivered high reversible capacity of 2247 mA h g−1 at 800 mA g−1, good rate capability, and excellent cycle stability of as long as 1000 cycles at 8 A g−1. Full batteries including the as-synthesized Si@SiO2 anodes and commercial LiCoO2 cathodes were also fabricated, which exhibited greatly enhanced performance, thus revealing that these novel Si@SiO2 nanowires/carbon textiles cable-type electrodes can be applied in next-generation energy storage devices.

Preparation and anti-coking application of sol–gel SiO2 coating in a delayed coking furnace

Jinglei Liu,Xiangxiang Wang,Hao Wang,Hong Xu,Jiangfeng Yang

To isolate iron sulphide and reduce coke adhesion reactions that occur on the surface of a delayed coking furnace, a SiO2 coating was developed on Cr9Mo alloy by employing the sol–gel method. The coating was characterised through Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, potentiodynamic scanning, InfiniteFocus optical 3D surface metrology, thermal shock and coking experiments. After heat treatment at 550 °C, the silicon methyl groups were oxidised and the coating exhibited a Si–O–Si connected crosslinked network structure. The coating surface was uniformly dense with a roughness and thickness of 0.2 and approximately 4 μm, respectively. The coating still adhered to the substrate tightly after 20 cycles of thermal shock treatment. Compared with an uncoated sample, the coating effectively improved the corrosion resistance of the substrate, suppressed the iron sulphide reaction, and reduced coke adhesion onto the sample. The coating had a better inhibition effect on coke fouling in a delayed coking furnace.

Thermally stable TiO2 quantum dots embedded in SiO2 foams: Characterization and photocatalytic H2 evolution activity

Donglai Pan,Zhiya Han,Yingchun Miao,Dieqing Zhang,Guisheng Li

Highly dispersed and thermally stable TiO 2 quantum dots (TiO 2 -QDs) were achieved in the pore channels of SiO 2 foams with large pore size (14–20 nm) via in-situ hydrolysis of Ti-alkoxide. Owing to the anchoring effect between TiO 2 -QDs and the pore-wall of SiO 2 foam, both the TiO 2 phase transformation from anatase to rutile and the aggregation of TiO 2 -QDs were effectively prohibited. The anatase TiO 2 -QDs anchored on the surface of silica foams could be well maintained with a ultrafine crystal size (<7.0 nm) even after high temperature (up to 1000 °C) calcination in air, suggesting a high thermal stability. The sample of TiO 2 -QDs/SiO 2 photocatalysts (molar ratio of Ti/Si = 60%, 900 °C) still exhibited a high H 2 evolution rate (HER, 10399 μmol g −1  h −1 ) for reducing water with a quantum efficiency of 17.8% under UV light irradiation (λ = 365 nm), slightly lower than that of the sample treated at 500 °C. In the absence of the silica foam, the pure TiO 2 crystals calcined at 900 °C crystals nearly cannot exhibit an obvious HER value. Such excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance was ascribed to the short electron-transfer distance, high anatase crystallinity, uniform dispersity in silica foam, and excellent stability of the TiO 2 -QDs. This proposed route offered an effective platform for fabricating highly active metal oxide QDs with high thermal stability, greatly prolonging the recyclability.

Facile preparation of Bacterial cellulose-SiO2 composite aerogel with good mechanical strength and thermal stability

Zhihui Chen,Tianfeng Yang,Xiaping Zhu,Yawen Liu,Donxue Ren,Yonghua Sun

Bacterial cellulose is a natural biopolymer with an ultrafine nanofibrous reticulated matrix and crosslinking active sites. In this work, composite silica aerogels were prepared using a two-step acid-base catalysis and ambient pressure drying, with methyltriethoxysilane as the silica precursor and a trace amount of bacterial cellulose as the silicon skeleton reinforcement. The preparation was carried out in water without the addition of other organic solvents and without solvent replacement. The preparation conditions were optimized, and the prepared composite aerogels were characterized using SEM, BET, FTIR, a contact angle meter, and GA-DTA. The results showed that the introduction of a trace amount of bacterial cellulose could obviously change the morphology and hydrophilicity of the aerogels, and increase its compressive strength up to 5 MPa without significant changes in its specific surface area and density. The addition of bacterial cellulose helped the aerogels maintain its original shape after being heated at high temperatures. Graphical Silicon dioxide aerogel is a polymer material with excellent properties, making it highly promising in various fields such as thermal insulation, acoustic absorption, and aerospace. However, the main challenge lies in the poor mechanical properties of silica aerogels. In this study, we present a method to reinforce silica aerogel materials using bacterial cellulose (BC). Our approach is environmentally friendly as it utilizes a pure aqueous solvent for the preparation of BC composite aerogels. This eliminates the need for any organic solvents and solvent substitution, making the process greener. Additionally, the preparation process can be completed using atmospheric pressure drying. To our surprise, we discovered that BC not only enhances the mechanical properties of the composite silica aerogel but also improves its thermal stability and hydrophobicity.

Resolving the cathode passivation of lithium–oxygen batteries with an amination SiO2/TiO2 functional separator

Fei Li,Ying Wang,Ri-Sheng Bai,Xiao-Xue Wang,Ma-Lin Li,Ji-Jing Xu

The issue of cathode passivation during cycling resulting in rapid capacity fading and premature battery death is a major challenge that hinders the applications of lithium–oxygen (Li–O 2 ) batteries. Here, a facile strategy of introducing a functional separator based on flexible amination SiO 2 /TiO 2 inorganic woven film (STON WF) is proposed to suppress the cathode passivation problem. The by-products, i.e. HCOOLi, CH 3 COOLi and Li 2 CO 3 can be selectively adsorbed on the STON WF separator preferably compared with the cathode and further proved by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Thus, benefiting from the separator, the Li–O 2 cells with super P carbon and catalyst-free cathode show enhanced electrochemical performance (5645 mA h g −1 at a current density of 200 mA g −1 ), good rate capability (discharge voltage of 2.43 V at a current density of 1.5 A g −1 ) and especially superior cycle stability up to 268 cycles. These findings present a promising approach to prevent the premature battery death.

Dual liquid/vapor-fed flame synthesis for the effective preparation of SiO2@YAlO3:Nd3+ nanophosphors

Zeyun Wu,Yiyang Zhang,Xiaofan Zhao,Hongyan Wang,Shuiqing Li

Yttrium aluminum oxide YAlO 3 is an attractive laser host material for lanthanide ions like Nd 3+ . In this paper, a dual liquid/vapor-fed flame synthesis (DLVF) system is developed for investigating the role of SiO 2 coating on flame-made YAlO 3 :Nd 3+ nanophosphors. The hexamethyldisiloxane (HDMSO) vapor is flexibly fed into the YAlO 3 :Nd 3+ flame spray flow at different positions and molar ratios . We find that the introduction of SiO 2 coating dramatically improves the crystallinity of YAlO 3 :Nd 3+ cores because of the heat-insulation effect and nearly doubles the fluorescence intensity . Through a timescale analysis, we demonstrate that the best timing for coating injection is when the small particles have already been formed but not heavily aggregated. An early injection could result in segregated SiO 2 particles and some impurities like Al 2 SiO 5 , while a delayed injection leads to the coating of SiO 2 on the entire aggregates instead of on individual particles. Experiments of different coating ratios show that the coating ratio 1:1 of Si:(Y+Nd) produces the best crystallinity and strongest fluorescence intensity. Further increase of the coating ratio does not show any improvements of the crystallinity , and may even causes the decrease of the relative fraction of Nd 3+ ions. Compared with YAG:Nd 3+ bulk materials (with a typical optimum doping concentration 1.1mol%) and uncoated YAlO 3 :Nd 3+ nanophosphors (with an optimum doping concentration 2 mol%), the SiO 2 coating promotes the optimum Nd 3+ doping concentration up to 3 mol%.

Hydrophobic and hydrophilic SiO2-based hybrids in the protection of sandstone for anti-salt damage

Mengjun Jia,Junyan Liang,Ling He,Xiang Zhao,Stefan Simon

The anti-salt damage of sandstone protected by hydrophobic and hydrophilic SiO 2 -based hybrids is evaluated in NaCl, Na 2 SO 4 and NaCl-Na 2 SO 4 salt-loaded hydrothermal aging (SLHA) cycles. Although both hydrophobic and hydrophilic SiO 2 -based hybrids could prevent the sandstone from salt damage through improving the matrix strength, the hydrophobic hybrid performs much better protection than hydrophilic one. The sandstone protected by hydrophobic SiO 2 -based hybrid shows nearly no salt-damage, which is attributed to its excellent water repellence, high adhesive strength and good compatibility with sandstone matrix. However, the hydrophilic SiO 2 -based hybrid tends to induce an exterior-to-interior salt-damage behaviour due to the frequent circulation movement of water with salt to result in the formation of surface efflorescence and interior sub-efflorescence in the protected sandstone. Furthermore, the hydrophobic-protective effect is also confirmed by another alternative hydrophobic POSS-based hybrid to offer stronger protection in anti-salt damage than that protected by hydrophilic hybrid. Nevertheless, there lies the difference, the hydrophobic SiO 2 -based hybrid penetrates into the inner pores of the sandstone and develops a strong cohesion with sand-grain through the formation of Si-O bonds, but the hydrophobic POSS-based hybrid protects the sandstone with a weaker physical interaction between hybrid and sand-grains resulting in a fractured damage. Therefore, SiO 2 -based hybrid is superior to POSS-based hybrid in promoting the anti-salt ability of sandstone. It is believed that these results could contribute much to the future protection of stone monuments by different hybrids.

Engineering long-lasting marine antifouling coatings with curcumin-grafted SiO2/PDMS nanocomposites via RAFT polymerization

Xing-Yu Lei,Liang Ma,Qi Xu,Hui-Jing Li,Yan-Chao Wu

Biofouling poses a great challenge to marine facilities and causes serious economic losses, making the development of green and non-toxic anti-fouling coatings a high priority. In this study, leveraging the broad-spectrum bacteriostatic and economic properties of the natural product curcumin (Cur), it was chemically grafted onto the surface of xanthate-functionalized silica nanoparticles with the hydrophilic monomer vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) using a reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization strategy. The resulting modified particles were incorporated as active fillers into a terminal hydroxy-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix, successfully constructing a functional coating labeled PDMS/SiO 2 -X. This coating exhibits a synergistic antifouling mechanism combining self-polishing, static antifouling agent mitigation and dynamic fouling release. The presence of modified silica significantly improves the mechanical properties of the coating. The low surface energy surface imparts excellent fouling-release characteristics, while the hydrolysis of ester bond enables the sustained release of Cur to achieve efficient bacterial inhibition. Additionally, NVP effectively resists protein adhesion by forming a hydration layer. A 180-day real-sea field test verifies the long-lasting and stable antifouling performance of the coating. This work provides a new idea for developing highly efficient and environmentally friendly marine antifouling coatings.

Self-assembled RGO/SiO2 gradient coated lightweight honeycomb with superhydrophobicity and ultra-broadband microwave absorption

Z.P. Liu,J.N. Ren,T.N. Man,S.B. Gu,Y.F. Li,J.Y. Xu,M.W. Zhu,S.V. Panin,S.W. Lu

Conventional honeycomb microwave-absorbing structures cannot simultaneously achieve superhydrophobic protection and electromagnetic impedance matching under harsh service conditions such as high humidity, salt spray, and icing. To address this, the present work proposes a surface-energy-driven self-assembly strategy. RGO/SiO₂ nanostructures are introduced into a phenolic resin matrix to form a gradient architecture, which is then applied to a functionalized aramid paper honeycomb. The self-assembled gradient structure creates a low-surface-energy micro/nanostructured rough interface on the outer surface, endowing the coating with excellent superhydrophobic and anti-icing properties. Meanwhile, it enhances the incidence and dissipation of electromagnetic waves through the synergistic effects of outer-layer impedance buffering, intermediate loss enhancement, and multiple interfacial polarization. The results show that the 3FCPR coating exhibits a water contact angle of 153° and an ice delay time of approximately 8 min 30 s. In terms of electromagnetic performance, the honeycomb structure achieves an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 10.6 GHz with a minimum reflection loss of −31 dB. By adopting a vertical gradient design, the EAB of the functionalized aramid honeycomb (FAH) structure is further broadened to 14.5 GHz, covering the C, X, and Ku bands. The surface-energy-driven self-assembly strategy enables the synergistic integration of superhydrophobicity, anti-icing capability, and microwave absorption while preserving the mechanical properties of the honeycomb itself. This work provides a new route for the multifunctional integrated design of lightweight honeycomb microwave absorption materials.

Waterborne fluorinated emulsion/F-SiO2 amphiphobic coatings for cementitious substrates: Wettability, interfacial adhesion and durability

Zhili Han,Zhiyong Liu,Bo Pang,Siyi Ju,Jinyang Jiang

Cementitious substrates are porous, rough, and alkaline. These characteristics make amphiphobic coatings prone to interfacial failure and make it difficult to simultaneously maintain liquid repellency, adhesion, and functional stability. Existing fluorinated, fluorine-free, and organic–inorganic hybrid amphiphobic coatings can achieve high contact angles on smooth substrates, but their engineering adaptability to rough, porous, and highly alkaline cementitious substrates still needs to be improved. In this study, a waterborne fluorinated emulsion (WFE) was used as the film-forming matrix. Fluorinated SiO 2 (F-SiO 2 ) was introduced to build a micro/nano rough structure. KH-560 and a water-dispersible isocyanate were also added to strengthen the interface and the bulk phase. Unlike previous studies that mainly focused on static contact angles, this work establishes a formulation-structure-adhesion relationship for waterborne amphiphobic coatings on porous and alkaline cementitious substrates. As the ratio of m(binder):m(F-SiO 2 ) changed from 1.0:0–0.2:1.0, the water contact angle increased from 78.0° to 152.3°, and the oil contact angle increased from 40.0° to 143.1°. This indicates a transition from a Wenzel-dominated state to a Cassie–Baxter composite wetting state. A clear transition region appeared near 1.0:0.5. The ratio of 0.5:1.0 was selected as the most balanced formulation among the tested groups because it achieved comparable liquid repellency with better adhesion balance and lower filler loading. After KH−560 and isocyanate were added, the pull-off adhesion strength increased from 1.52 MPa to 2.03 MPa. After immersion in acid/alkali solutions for 48 h, immersion in deionized water for 7 d, 100 cycles of mechanical abrasion, and UV aging for 7 d, the optimized coating still maintained high water and oil repellency, indicating short-term functional retention under laboratory exposure conditions. These results provide an effective strategy for preparing waterborne amphiphobic coatings with balanced liquid repellency, interfacial adhesion, and short-term functional stability on cementitious substrates.

Site-Directed Immobilization of DuraPETase onto PET-Binding PDA@SiO2 for High-Efficiency PET Degradation

Zixuan Li,Fengyuan Zhang,Shaolei Zhao,Mingbo Sun,Jingru Liu,Yan Xie,Shucai Zhang

Plastic pollution caused by poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) highlights the urgent need for efficient biodegradation strategies. However, PET hydrolases such as DuraPETase typically exhibit limited substrate affinity for PET and insufficient operational stability. Although conventional immobilization improves enzyme stability, it often compromises catalytic activity. Here, we design a PET-targeting, orientation-controlled immobilization strategy that overcomes this traditional trade-off and enables efficient PET biodegradation. Guided by rational structural analysis, three Cys variants (R53C, R59C, R224C) were engineered for site-specific covalent attachment to a PDA@SiO2support with inherent PET-binding capability. The resulting conjugates (DuraR53C-PDA@SiO2, DuraR59C-PDA@SiO2, and DuraR224C-PDA@SiO2) displayed distinct catalytic and stability profiles. Among them, DuraR59C-PDA@SiO2achieved the optimal balance between activity and stability, retaining kinetic properties comparable to the free enzyme and maintaining 87.6% residual activity after 2 h at 80 °C. Water contact angle measurements confirmed its PET-targeting behavior, as evidenced by the reduction in the PET contact angle from 85° to 45°. In 10-day degradation assays at 50 °C, DuraR59C-PDA@SiO2released a total of 4865.32 μM degradation products, representing a 2.37-fold increase relative to free DuraPETase. These findings demonstrate an effective strategy for industrial enzymatic PET degradation and recycling.

Confined CuFe2O4 spinel coated on hierarchical SiO2 for enhanced continuous-flow Fenton-like wastewater treatment

Pu Li,Zhiming Chen,Jie Teng,Jing Feng,Kunbo Wu,Feiyun Sun,Mingguo Peng,Guofen Rui,Yang Zhao,Mu Li

Heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysis offers a promising route for oxidative water treatment, yet its practical implementation remains constrained by the difficulty of integrating highly active powder catalysts into continuous-flow operation. Herein, we report a pore-confined CuFe 2 O 4 spinel catalyst coated on hierarchical SiO 2 particles and demonstrate its use in an up-flow fixed-bed reactor for continuous tetracycline degradation. A multi-cycle impregnation-precipitation strategy enables the progressive in-pore growth of CuFe 2 O 4 , achieving a high active-phase loading of 5.16 wt% while preserving accessible mesoporosity. Under continuous-flow operation at a hydraulic retention time of 5 min, the optimized Fe/Cu@SiO 2 -3 catalyst maintained >93% tetracycline removal over 60 min. Quenching experiments and ESR analysis identify •OH and 1 O 2 as the dominant oxidative species, indicating a dual radical/non-radical oxidation pathway. XPS and DFT calculations provide complementary evidence for an electronic-structure-level mechanism for the enhanced H 2 O 2 activation. Favorable adsorption (-0.80 eV) induces interfacial charge redistribution and raises the work function from 5.543 to 5.626 eV. PDOS reveals near-Fermi Cu 3d states and Fe 3d-O 2p coupling, supporting Cu-mediated electron transfer, Fe-O activation, and sustained Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycling through the Cu-O-Fe pathway during efficient interfacial peroxide conversion. This work links pore-confined spinel construction with continuous-flow Fenton-like catalysis, providing a structurally stable catalyst design with a mechanistically grounded understanding of the Fenton-like process.
