Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive subtype with rapid progression, high metastatic risk, and limited treatment options. Clinical TNBC specimens show severe hypoxia along with elevated expression of secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC). Inspired by these patient-derived hallmarks, it is engineered targeted self-assembled albumin-cerium oxide nanozymes (ACCD NPs) that couple SPARC-mediated tumor targeting with catalytic hypoxia modulation for synergistic sonodynamic-chemotherapy. Albumin enables selective delivery of doxorubicin (DOX) and chlorin e6 (Ce6) via SPARC-receptor interactions, while oxygen vacancy-engineered cerium oxide (CeO 2 ) decomposes endogenous hydrogen peroxide to generate oxygen, alleviating hypoxia. This oxygenation markedly amplifies ultrasound-triggered reactive oxygen species production, potentiating Ce6-mediated sonodynamic cytotoxicity and enhancing DOX chemosensitivity. In vitro, ACCD NPs demonstrate efficient targeted uptake, lysosome-responsive DOX release, and strong synergistic killing under ultrasound irradiation. In vivo, they achieve 3.8-fold higher tumor accumulation than free drugs, suppress TNBC growth by 84.9%, and downregulate hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) without systemic toxicity. Mechanistic analyses reveal activation of autophagy and pyroptosis, suppression of oncogenic signaling, and upregulation of tumor suppressor genes. This clinically informed nanoplatform establishes a versatile therapeutic paradigm that translates patient tissue-derived molecular features into precise, multimodal strategies for overcoming hypoxia-associated, treatment-refractory cancers.

NiMn 2 O 4 (NMO) coated Gd-doped CeO 2 (GDC) and NiO powders are prepared by a hydrothermal method for the anode of a metal (Ni-10 at.% Fe)-supported solid oxide fuel cell fueled by wet CH 4 (3 vol.% H 2 O). NMO remains on NiO but dissolves into GDC at 1400 °C. Upon reduction in H 2 at 700 °C for 2 h, Ni nanoparticles exsolve on the doped-CeO 2 (DCO) substrate (DCO@Ni), while MnO nanoparticles form on Ni (Ni@MnO). DCO@Ni demonstrates high catalytic activity for reforming wet CH 4 and high resistance to carbon deposition with a yield of H 2 increasing from 11 (500 °C) to 33 (700 °C) ml min −1 and remaining around 25 ml min −1 at 600 °C for 30 h. The metal-supported single-cell with a Ni@MnO-DCO@Ni anode shows high initial and durable electrochemical performance with a maximum power density increasing from 160 (500 °C) to 720 (700 °C) mW cm −2 and a cell voltage remaining above 0.55 V at 600 °C for 200 h under 400 mA cm −2 and 20 ml min −1 . Such high performance is ascribed to the metal support with low ohmic resistance and the engineered anode with high catalytic activity and enhanced resistance to carbon deposition.

Low-temperature catalytic CO oxidation is an important chemical process in versatile applications, such as the H2 utilization for low-temperature H2 air fuel cells. Pt-group metal catalysts are efficient but highly cost-consuming. This work demonstrates an excellent and sixpenny catalyst with earth-abundant Ni and Ce, in which Ni ions are atomically incorporated into the CeO2 matrix (Ni–Ce–Ox) by synchronous spray-pyrolysis (SSP) of mixture nitrates of Ni and Ce. The Ni–Ce–Ox catalyst presents a mesoporous structure. Revealed by a model reaction of 1% CO, 1% O2, and 98% balance He at a space velocity of 13,200 mL/gcat/h, Ni–Ce–Ox catalysts display a typical volcano-shaped relationship between reactivity and Ni incorporation amount. The optimized Ni incorporation appears with a high Ni/Ce atomic ratio of 0.25, endowing the T50 (temperature corresponding to a CO conversion of 50%), which is lower-shifted by 165 °C than that of pristine CeO2 (266 °C). The density functional theory (DFT) calculations further indicate that the much-reduced oxygen vacancy formation energy at Ni–Ce single-atom sites boosted the adsorption activation of the CO molecule and therefore promoted the CO oxidation process. Besides, the2 Ni–Ce–Ox from the SSP method presents better performance than the counterparts from immersion and hydrothermal methods. This work paves a way to access efficient noble-metal-free catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation.

To precisely engineer the polymerization-deposition (PD) route of Fenton-like reactions for efficient phenols decontamination, this study developed a CeO 2 /Co 3 O 4 composite featuring abundant interfacial asymmetric oxygen vacancies (As-OVs), addressing ambiguous structure-activity relationship and unclear catalytic mechanism in PD route regulation. The catalytic behavior, peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation pathway, phenols transformation mechanism and continuous operation performance were systematically investigated via experiments, characterization and theoretical calculation. Compared with symmetric oxygen vacancies (S-OVs) in Co 3 O 4 alone, As-OVs altered phenols oxidation from mineralization to PD route by anchoring PMS via terminal oxygen atoms rather than peroxide bond, avoiding O-O bond cleavage along with radical pathway, thus suppressing oxidant waste and enabling 100 % ETP-triggered PD route. At ultra-low PMS/BPA ratio (1.14), 79.7 % TOC removal was achieved, reducing PMS consumption to 4 % vs. mineralization pathway and enabling long-term continuous practical wastewater treatment. Experimental and theoretical calculation revealed that the unique PMS adsorption configuration, greater electron rearrangement tendency and enhanced phenoxyl radical adhesion around As-OVs facilitate efficient coupling to form crosslinked products on the catalyst, ensuring excellent structural and catalytic stability of OVs-CeO 2 /Co 3 O 4 . These findings deepen understanding of metal oxide-guided PD route via interfacial defect engineering, contributing to cost-efficiency and advancing high-performance, sustainable wastewater decontamination technologies with long-term operation.

Quercetin, a potent natural antioxidant, is gaining widespread attention for its remarkable health benefits, including the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, allergies, diabetes, and cancer. As a promising functional food ingredient, there is an urgent need for fast, sensitive, and portable methods to monitor quercetin levels in various products. In this study, we present a portable dual-mode nanozyme-driven sensor based on cerium dioxide nanoparticle-anchored metal-organic framework (CeO 2 @UiO-66-NH 2 ) nanocomposite. This nanocomposite exhibits impressive oxidase-like activity and intrinsic fluorescence properties, enabling it to catalyze the oxidation of colorless N, N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine to a pink product, which in turn quenches the fluorescence of CeO 2 @UiO-66-NH 2 at 458 nm via an inner filter effect (IFE). The presence of quercetin inhibits reactive oxygen species generation, thus attenuating the oxidation and restoring fluorescence. A paper-based fluorescent-colorimetric dual-mode sensing platform was established for quercetin detection, enabling rapid and visual evaluation without complex instruments. The proposed method exhibited a broad linear response range of 1-60 μM. The limits of detection for the colorimetric/fluorescent and paper-based colorimetric/fluorescent were 0.35, 0.27, 0.37, and 0.29 μM, respectively. This dual-mode sensor demonstrates excellent analytical sensitivity and selectivity, with successful application in real vegetable and juice samples, offering a reliable, efficient tool for quercetin monitoring in food and functional food ingredients.

In the current situation of carbon reduction in the shipping industry, hydrogen as a future energy source is the key to hydrogen-powered ships. Onboard methanol steam reforming (MSR) hydrogen production technology is of great significance in solving the hydrogen safety issues of hydrogen-powered ships. The key to this technology is to obtain MSR catalysts with lower CO selectivity and higher hydrogen production performance for use as hydrogen sources in high-temperature proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs). A new Cu0.75Mg0.25Ga0.7Fe1.3O4spinel catalyst was synthesized and subsequently dispersed at a nominal loading of 15 wt% onto three distinct oxide supports: CeO2, ZrO2, and Cr2O3. The synthesized samples were characterized, and their catalytic behavior in MSR was evaluated in a fixed-bed reactor. The results establish that the loading procedure leaves the bulk spinel structure intact. Among the series, the CeO2-supported specimen exhibits a higher degree of active-phase dispersion, a loosely packed and highly porous architecture, and more extensive interfacial contact between the spinel crystallites and the support. Relative to its ZrO2- and Cr2O3-supported counterparts, Cu0.75Mg0.25Ga0.7Fe1.3O4@CeO2delivers markedly superior overall catalytic performance. Under conditions of 320 °C, a water-to-methanol molar ratio of 3:1, and a liquid hourly space velocity (LHSV) of 15 h−1, complete methanol conversion (100%) is achieved, together with a hydrogen production rate of 8.71 mmol·min−1·gcat−1and CO selectivity approaching zero. The outstanding catalytic behavior may be attributed to the interface synergy between the spinel active center and CeO2support, particularly the synergistic effect of oxygen vacancies and Ce4+/Ce3+redox shuttle, which facilitates substrate replacement while inhibiting CO production. This catalyst architecture provides a promising material platform for on-line methanol reforming integrated with fuel cell power systems on hydrogen-powered ships.

Most widely-studied semiconductor catalysts have low efficiency in utilizing near-infrared (NIR) light in the solar spectrum, while also facing major issues such as slow charge-carrier migration rate and lack of active sites that limit photocatalytic performance. Here, a new strategy to promote the solar-light driven photocatalytic activity of ZnIn 2 S 4 was proposed by introducing Rh single atom (SAs) into CeO 2 :Yb,Er/ZnIn 2 S 4 with photo-thermo-electric effects. The introduction of Rh SAs into ZnIn 2 S 4 effectively suppresses charge recombination, and improves reaction rate through photo-thermal effect. CeO 2 :Yb, Er converts NIR light into visible light via up-conversion photo-optical processes and generates high-energy electrons via two-photon photo-electronic process, both of which can activate ZnIn 2 S 4 . Large contact area and strong interface electric field between CeO 2 and ZnIn 2 S 4 enhance photo-electric conversion efficiency. The CeO 2 :Yb,Er/Rh-ZnIn 2 S 4 exhibits a hydrogen production rate of up to 99.68 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 at 10°C and 148.06 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 with non-temperature-controlled conditions. Under mild conditions, the photocatalysts can convert glucose into high-value-added chemicals (e.g., arabinose) while simultaneously generating hydrogen. This work provides a new strategy to improve NIR light utilization efficiency and enhance charge-carrier separation capability through photo-thermo-electric effects, promoting the production of green hydrogen and biomass conversion into high-value-added chemicals.

Silicone rubber suffers from low mechanical strength and thermal stability, while conventional reinforcement often exacerbates the strength–toughness trade-off. Here, we present a strategy to construct high-performance silicone rubber composites via synergistic regulation of crosslinking networks and interfacial interactions. A multifunctional crosslinker PTMS, was synthesized to enrich reactive site density and strengthen the network. CeO 2 particles were eco-efficiently functionalized by silanization, ensuring homogeneous dispersion and interfacial compatibility with rubber matrix. Importantly, CeO 2 lowers effective crosslink density, compensating extensibility loss typically induced by rigid nanofillers, while its reinforcing effect enables simultaneous strength and toughness enhancement. The composites deliver a tensile strength of 1.44 ± 0.08 MPa (180% increase), toughness of 1.95 ± 0.05 MJ m −3 (187.5% improvement), elongation at break of 225.04% ± 16.10%, and fracture energy of 1.57 ± 0.12 kJ m −2 . Beyond reinforcement, CeO 2 acts as a radical scavenger and thermal stabilizer, raising onset decomposition temperature from (424.8 °C), maximum decomposition temperature (560.3 °C), and limiting oxygen index (28.40 ± 0.20%). This work provides a method for overcoming long-standing trade-offs in silicone rubber and highlights the multifunctional role of nanofillers in simultaneously optimizing mechanical robustness, extensibility, thermal stability, and flame retardancy.

Ammonia decomposition is an appealing method for on-site hydrogen production, enabling ease of transportation and storage of H 2 . However, the high-temperature and hydrogen-rich environment present a challenge in developing highly efficient and stable catalysts. Hence, this study outlines an exsolution strategy for synthesizing a Ni-based catalyst in intimate contact with CeO 2 . The Ce 10 /NiAl 2 O 4 catalyst exhibits competitive catalytic performance for ammonia decomposition reaction, and achieves a hydrogen production rate of 78.3 mmol g cat −1 min −1 at 550 °C. Importantly, the robust structure of the Ce 10 /NiAl 2 O 4 catalyst ensures that no significant deactivation is observed during the 200-h stability test. HRTEM, XRD, TPD and kinetic studies reveals that the presence of CeO 2 enhances the dispersion of exsolved Ni nanoparticles, modulates the surface basicity of catalyst, reduce the reaction activation energy, promote the desorption of nitrogen/hydrogen species, and subsequently promotes NH 3 adsorption/activation capacity·NH 3 -TPD-MS in combination with in-situ DRIFTS demonstrate that CeO 2 could accelerate the recombination and desorption of N* adatoms, which is the rate limiting step, thereby significantly boosting catalytic performance. Furthermore, the DFT calculations reveal that the interaction between CeO 2 and Ni species facilitates electron transfer toward Ni, lowering the barrier for both N–H dissociation and N* recombination and desorption. This work not only presents an efficient and stable noble-metal-free catalyst for ammonia decomposition to generate hydrogen, but also provide a general strategy to engineer high-performance catalysts applicable to harsh catalytic environments.

Using a simple ‘polymer-assisted pyrolysis–co-precipitation’ strategy, a three-dimensional interlocked CeO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 Z -scheme heterojunction structure with a honeycomb-like morphology was successfully fabricated. In contrast to the morphology of conventional composites, morphological and structural characterisation in this study indicates that the thermal cracking strategy of the polymer template causes partial rupture of CeO 2 microspheres to create pores, driving g-C 3 N 4 to interpenetrate, thereby promoting the interweaving of the two to form a three-dimensional interlocked symbiotic network. Its unique structure not only increases the interfacial contact area but also creates smoother mesoporous transport channels, thereby promoting mass transfer processes. This significantly enhances the degradation kinetics in low-concentration systems. The degradation rate constant k for 5 mg/L phenol is 0.036 min −1 , which is up to 4.9 times higher than that in high-concentration systems. XPS and EIS analyses revealed strong interfacial chemical interactions between CeO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 ; this close interfacial coupling effectively reduced charge transfer resistance. Combined with characterisation methods such as ESR, this suggested that the system promotes the separation of photogenerated carriers along a proposed efficient Z -scheme path, thereby continuously generating large amounts of reactive oxygen species (•O—2 and •OH). The optimal 2–1Ce/CN composite achieved a phenol degradation rate of up to 94.5% for a 5 mg/L solution within 75 min, whilst demonstrating excellent cycling stability. This work provides novel mechanistic insights for the design and development of structurally optimised materials for highly efficient photocatalytic environmental remediation.

Various exogenous contaminants typically coexist in waste activated sludge (WAS), and the long-term impacts of these co-occurring contaminants on WAS anaerobic fermentation and associated mechanisms remain largely unknown. This study reveals that the co-occurrence of surfactants and nanoparticles (NPs, i.e. , Fe 2 O 3 and CeO 2 , frequently detected in sludge) exhibited time-dependent impacts on the volatile fatty acids (VFAs) biosynthesis. Surfactants triggered WAS decomposition and enhanced NPs dispersion, leading to increased exposure of functional anaerobes to NPs toxicity, negatively affecting them. Consequently, key fermentation processes, acidogenic bacterial abundance, and metabolic functions were inhibited in co-occurrence reactors compared to those containing only surfactants in the early stage (before 56 d). Surprisingly, the fermentation systems containing surfactants collapsed subsequently, with VFAs yield at 72 d decreasing by 48.59–71.27 % compared to 56 d. The keystone microbes ( i.e. , Acidobacteria (16 d) vs Patescibacteria (56 d)) were reshaped, and metabolic traits ( i.e. , proB involved in intracellular metabolism) were downregulated by 0.05–78.02 % due to reduced microbial adaptive capacity ( i.e. , quorum sensing (QS)). Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) analysis suggests that the microbial community was the predominant factor influencing VFAs generation. This study provides new insights into the long-term effects of co-contaminants on the biological treatment of WAS.

The development of efficient processes for value-added utilization of low-concentration CO 2 is an on-going challenge. In this work, we present a sequential system based on diamine platforms for the direct utilization of low-concentration sources of CO 2 (≤15%) in the production of cyclic ureas. Specifically, the low-concentration CO 2 is captured by ethylenediamine to form ethylenediamine carbamate (EDA-CA), which subsequently undergoes the intramolecular dehydration to give ethyleneurea (EU) in the presence of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) on the facet-engineered CeO 2 . Remarkably, the productivity of EU obtained from EDA-CA in the sequential system (9.5 mmol·g cat −1 ·h −1 ) is ∼4 times higher compared to the traditional catalytic system (2.4 mmol·g cat −1 ·h −1 ) using ethylenediamine and pure CO 2 (3 MPa). Density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the FLPs on facet-engineered CeO 2 significantly reduce the energy barrier for the nucleophilic attack of N-containing segment towards the carbonyl carbon in EDA-CA (rate-limiting step), ultimately optimizing the intramolecular cyclization efficiency of EDA-CA. This work not only provides an innovation tandem approach that enables the production of cyclic ureas from low-concentration CO 2 , but also opens up a promising avenue for the direct utilization of low-concentration CO 2 for value-added applications in the future.
