Emulsifier-free polymerization was employed to prepare the submicron spherical PSA (the copolymer of styrene and acrylic acid), then SiO 2 was grown on the surface of the PSA by sol-gel method to form F–SiO 2 @PSA particles. It was found that when styrene: acrylic acid = 2.5:1 and tetraethyl orthosilicate : PSA was between 2.17:1 and 6.38:1, a perfect raspberry-like structure could be obtained. The coating based on F–SiO 2 @PSA particles exhibited contact angles of 167.3 ± 1.4°, 152.1 ± 1.5°,150.3 ± 1.6°, 150.9 ± 1.6°, 142.2 ± 1.7°, 143.7 ± 1.5° and 146.6 ± 1.9° to water, diiodomethane, soybean oil, rapeseed oil, hexadecane, kerosene, and waste engine oil , respectively. The F–SiO 2 @PSA coating could reduce the adsorption of protein by 90% compared with the control surface . It was observed that bacteria and platelets could hardly adhere to the coating surface after 24 h of E. coli culture and 3 h of platelet-rich plasma immersion. The anti-adhesion to proteins, platelets, and bacteria will give the coating a promising application in the medical field.

Oil spills and oily wastewater from various industries caused severe harm to the environment and human life. Then the effective treatment of oily wastewater is extremely urgent. Superhydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity membranes are considered as a favorable choice for the separation of oily wastewater. In this work, inspired by mussel adhesive protein chemistry , the SiO 2 /PDA/PTFE membrane (SPP) with hydrophilic chemical components and multi-scale rough structures was prepared by the facile combination of dopamine self-polymerization and sol-gel strategy. The hydrophilic SiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) and polydopamine layer can be co-deposited on the membrane surface through Michael addition reaction, thus avoiding the problem of coating damage during oil/water separation. Moreover, the SiO 2 /PDA layer has hydrophilic groups and micro/nano rough structure, which makes the SPP membrane possess superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic properties. The properties of SPP membrane facilitate the formation of a hydration layer on the membrane surface, thus minimizing direct contact with oil droplets. During the experiment of oil/water separation, SPP membrane demonstrated excellent separation ability, the permeation flux of SPP membrane was measured to be 6183 and 4389 L m −2 h −1 for oil-water mixture and oil-in-water emulsion, respectively. The oil/water separation efficiency had also reached more than 99.7%. In addition, the SPP membrane exhibited brilliant chemical stability under harsh environments. It is worth mentioning that the SPP membrane showed superior cycling and anti-fouling performance in the separation process. These excellent performances demonstrate the great potential of SPP membranes in the industrial applications.

In this study, we investigated the deactivation kinetics and mechanism of N–F–TiO 2 /SiO 2 nanopowder as a model photocatalyst for the purpose of facilitating the photocatalytic degradation of acrylonitrile (AN) in aqueous environment. Prior research has already displayed the proficient degradation of AN through the utilization of N–F–TiO 2 /SiO 2 catalysts, revealing a degradation efficiency of 81.2% within a span of 6 min at an initial AN concentration of 10 mg/L. Multiple variables including the initial AN concentration, illumination intensity, and initial pH value were extensively analyzed during the degradation process. The kinetics of photocatalytic degradation of AN, facilitated by the N–F–TiO 2 /SiO 2 photocatalyst, were modeled by fitting the pseudo first-order reaction kinetics to each individual factor. Furthermore, the adverse effect of catalyst poisoning during the photocatalytic breakdown of AN using the N–F–TiO 2 /SiO 2 photocatalyst was analyzed through a range of different techniques including SEM, XPS, BET, XRD, TG, and NH 3 -TPD. The incorporation of findings from these diverse techniques revealed that, the primary factors contributing to the photocatalyst's poisoning were as follows: (i) During the degradation process, the build-up of intermediate molecules on active sites hindered their functionality, leading to a decrease in the efficiency of the photocatalytic reaction, (ii) Carbonaceous deposits formed when the catalyst's pore structure was obstructed by pollutants or intermediate products that had not undergone timely photocatalytic breakdown and (iii) The persistent erosion of active sites due to hydraulic forces resulted in inadequate performance of the N–F–TiO 2 /SiO 2 photocatalyst in aqueous solutions. A comprehensive analysis of the deactivation kinetics was conducted, deciding in the formulation of a detailed poisoning mechanism for the N–F–TiO 2 /SiO 2 photocatalyst. Additionally, we explored the catalysts regeneration, involving thermal treatment, ultrasonic irradiation, and catalyst reloading. This study not only advances our insight into the waning performance of catalysts in aqueous media but also establishes a conceptual framework for extrapolating analogous deactivation dynamics in other catalysts, grounded in precedent experimental knowledge. This research contributes to the development of a deactivation model for catalysts in the aqueous environment, based on existing experimental research, providing a theoretical framework for understanding the deactivation process of photocatalysts.

Mg2SiO4and MgSiO3ceramics with superior microwave dielectric properties are considered to be promising candidates for 5G applications. However, a slight deviation from the stoichiometric Mg/Si ratio will significantly influence their microwave dielectric properties, which will hinder their practical applications. In this work, thexMgO-SiO2(x= 1~2) ceramics were synthesized by a solid-state reaction method. The influence of the Mg/Si ratioxon the crystalline phase, microstructure, and microwave dielectric properties was investigated through X-ray diffraction (XRD), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the resonant cavity method. The XRD patterns revealed the coexistence of Mg2SiO4and MgSiO3within thexrange of 1~2, which was further demonstrated by the energy-dispersive X-ray spectra. The SEM images show a typical polycrystalline morphology of ceramics with an inhomogeneous grain size distribution. It is found that the microwave dielectric properties fluctuate at both sides of thexrange while those remain relatively stable with minor changes at the intermediate components, indicating an obvious low composition dependence helpful for practical applications. Further, a demonstrator of a microstrip patch antenna for 5G applications using the 1.5MgO-SiO2ceramic was designed and fabricated, and a return loss of −16.2 dB was demonstrated, which demonstrated the potential applications.Keywords:MgO-SiO2systems;5G application;microwave dielectric ceramics;phase composition

Background Due to its high chemical stability, sufficient rigidity and zwitterionic ion exchange properties, TiO 2 can be considered as an alternative stationary phase material to SiO 2 for high performance liquid chromatography . TiO 2 stationary phase is usually prepared by coating TiO 2 onto SiO 2 support by sol-gel method. However, in the traditional coating method, in order to overcome the rapid hydrolysis rate of tetrabutyl orthotitanate, only a very low concentration of tetrabutyl orthotitanate can be used, resulting in a low loading of TiO 2 on the support. Results TiO 2 core-shell spheres with a good monodispersity were prepared using 0.25 mol L −1 tetrabutyl orthotitanate. The specific surface area, pore volume , pore diameter and TiO 2 loading of the TiO 2 core-shell spheres were 66 m 2 g −1 , 0.15 cm 3 g −1 , 9.8 nm and 57%, respectively. The core-shell spheres were derivatized with n-octadecyltrichlorosilane and then packed into a stainless steel column to test the separation performance for neutral, basic and acidic samples in liquid chromatography. A baseline separation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons was achieved, showing a column efficiency for fluorene of 118075 plates m −1 . The prepared stationary phase was also used to separate acidic and basic mixtures, and column efficiencies of 54500 and 25836 plates m −1 were obtained for N , N -dinitroaniline and p -chlorophenol, respectively. The relative standard deviations of the retention times of polyaromatic hydrocarbons for run-to-run, day-to-day and column-to-column repeatability were all below 5.1%. Significance and novelty This work demonstrated that TiO 2 can be coated in the pores of the shell of SiO 2 core-shell spheres with high TiO 2 loading using a high concentration of tetrabutyl orthotitanate as the titania source. The experimental results show that the TiO 2 coated core-shell spheres can be a good alternative stationary phase for liquid chromatography.

Environmental noise has been regarded as major noise pollution with severe hazards to human physical and mental health. The common commercial fiber sound-absorption materials have insufficient low frequencies wave absorbing and fire-resistant ability, limiting their wide application. To solve these problems, a novel strategy combining flexible nanofibers and rGO/MXene nanosheets was proposed to fabricate rGO/MXene/SiO 2 nanofibers composite aerogel with hierarchically porous structure, which possessed an extremely low density of 9.8 mg/cm 3 and superior low-frequency sound absorption ability (NRC value of 0.51). The obtained composite aerogel possessed a large deformation up to 80% (corresponding compressive stress of 17 kPa) and quickly recovered. In addition, the as-prepared aerogel could be easily produced on a large scale, providing a reference for the development of new generation of sound-absorbing products.

A novel supported deep eutectic solvent (DES) TBAB/PEG-200 was prepared by loading DES TBAB/PEG-200 onto mesoporous silica by the sol–gel method. The properties of the supported deep eutectic solvent TBAB/PEG-200 were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, BET analysis, and TG. The adsorption oxidation desulfurization system was studied using environmentally friendly H2O2 as an oxidant and typical heterocyclic sulfide dibenzothiophene (DBT) was dissolved in n-octane as a simulated oil. After the optimization of preset experimental parameters, the DBT content in the simulated oil could be removed deeply and effectively under the optimal reaction conditions m(25%-DES/SiO2) = 0.20 g, T = 60 °C, O/S = 14, t = 60 min. The catalyst was reused more than 9 times with no significant decrease in the desulfurization rate. Finally, the possible adsorption oxidative desulfurization mechanism was proposed.

Membranes for water remediation require structural stability, efficient operation, and durability. In this work, we used cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) to reinforce hierarchical nanofibrous membranes based on polyacrylonitrile (PAN). Hydrolysis of the electrospun nanofibers (H-PAN) enabled hydrogen bonding with CNC and provided reactive sites for grafting cationic polyethyleneimine (PEI). In a further modification, anionic silica particles (SiO 2 ) were adsorbed on the fiber surfaces, obtaining CNC/H-PAN/PEI/SiO 2 hybrid membranes, which developed swelling resistance (swelling ratio of 6.7 compared to 25.4 measured for a CNC/PAN membrane). Hence, the introduced hydrophilic membranes contain highly interconnected channels, they are non-swellable and exhibit mechanical and structural integrity. By contrast with untreated PAN membranes, those obtained after modification displayed high structural integrity and allowed regeneration and cyclic operation. Finally, wettability and oil-in-water emulsion separation tests demonstrated remarkable oil rejection and separation efficiency in aqueous media.

The self-healing performance of anticorrosive coatings is critical to restoring their protective function in the event of failure to ensure durability in harsh corrosive conditions. In this work, a novel self-healing anticorrosive coating was fabricated by two-dimensional transition metal carbides and carbonitrides (MXenes) and mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) loading tannic acid (TA) as corrosion inhibitors that can effectively protect low-carbon steel from corrosion damage. The TA as corrosion inhibitors were loaded into the mesoporous silica nanoparticles, and the loading capacity reached about 71.71%. The synthesized epoxy/TA@MXene-SiO 2 coating was characterized in detail using different tools. The epoxy/TA@MXene-SiO 2 coating had excellent anticorrosive performance and an impedance modulus of 2.826 × 10 6 Ω cm 2 at 0.01 Hz. The impedance modulus reached the maximum peak value of 8.585 × 10 6 Ω cm 2 after 132 h of continuous immersion. In addition, the TA made a coating with an electrochemical self-healing efficiency of 114.27 kΩ cm 2 h −1 . This work provides insight into the novel design of anticorrosive coatings with excellent anticorrosive performance and high self-healing efficiency.

To deeply understand the role of P in hydrodeoxygenation (HDO), SiO2-supported Ni and Ni–P catalysts with different P/Ni ratios (x) were prepared. The as-prepared samples were characterized by various characterization methods. The HDO activity and product distribution over the Ni/SiO2 and N–P/SiO2-x were compared and the effects of x on the structure, acidity, formation mechanism of active phases and HDO performance were studied taking m-cresol HDO as a model reaction. The results showed that the introduction of P promotes the formation of smaller active sites and contributes to the creation of weak and medium strength acid sites through the formation of P–OH groups and Niδ+ in Ni2P. HDO over the Ni/SiO2 catalyst occurs mainly via the hydrogenation (HYD) route with 3-methyl-cyclohexanol (3-MCHnol) as the main product. However, for Ni–P/SiO2-x catalysts, methyl-cyclohexane (MCH) selectivity increases first and then decreases with the increase of x, reaching a maximum of 95% at x = 1. The acidity generated by the introduction of P contributes to increased MCH selectivity, while the dehydration of 3-MCHnol to MCH occurs mainly on acid sites. However, the excessively high P content (x ≥ 2.0) leads to a significant increase of MB (toluene) selectivity, which is associated with the increase in Ni(I) sites. About 100% m-cresol conversion was achieved with Ni–P/SiO2-1.0 when the m-cresol (g)/catalyst (g) ratio was 3, with MCH (99.4%) as the major product, showing great promise for deep HDO catalysis.

Rewritable paper is of great significance for environmental and sustainable development. Specially, the water rewritable paper based on hydrochromism has aroused extensive research interesting for being clean, convenient and compatible with the current ink jet printer. Nevertheless, previously reported water rewritable paper requires complex and time-consuming fabricating process. Here, we report a facile strategy to fabricate structural colored water rewritable paper simply via two step infiltration on commercially available paper. After infiltration of graphene laminates and SiO 2 colloidal spheres in sequence, the obtained paper is integrated with assembled graphene laminates (AGLs)/amorphous colloidal arrays (ACAs) hierarchical composite structure. Owing to the advantageous micro-topography, selective separation capacity and high visible light absorption property of the underlying AGLs, SiO 2 ACAs with vivid structure color can be realized. Moreover, the hydrochomism of the hierarchical composite structure is resulted from the synergistic contribution of the hydrophilic structural color and the visible light absorption property of AGLs. Our strategy is based on the environmental-friendly structural color and convenient to realized, which offers a promising alternative to rapidly fabricate colored water rewritable paper.

Membrane distillation (MD) has been widely used for resource recovery from high-salinity wastewater, due to its superior technical merits of high separation efficiency and potential integration of low-grade heat. Herein, a robust superhydrophobic PVDF membrane prepared by spray-coating of fluorinated silica nanoparticles was employed to treat highly saline dye wastewater by MD. Specifically, impacts of operation conditions, including temperature difference, feed flow-rate, salinity, dye concentration, and dye species, on MD performance of the fabricated superhydrophobic PVDF membrane were comprehensively investigated. The increase of temperature difference and feed flow-rate had a positive effect on the MD flux of the membrane. Conversely, the rise in salinity and dye concentration induced an adverse impact on the MD flux. Furthermore, the superhydrophobic PVDF membrane showed a strong robustness in treating complex streams, as demonstrated by consistently stable MD flux using various dye/NaCl mixed solutions. Due to the robust surface superhydrophobicity, the fabricated PVDF membrane exhibited impressive antiwetting and antifouling properties against highly saline dye wastewater, consistently stable permeation flux, and high dye/salt removal efficiency (>99.99%). Moreover, the superhydrophobic membrane showed a high water recovery (90%) from highly saline dye wastewater with a slight reduction (13.4%) in permeation flux during a 39 h MD filtration. These results signify the promising practicability of the fabricated superhydrophobic PVDF membrane in sustainable management of highly saline dye wastewater via MD.
