Photoluminescence Enhancement of NIR-II Emissive Ag2S Quantum Dots via Chloride-Mediated Growth and Passivation

Liang-Jun Pan,Jia-Wei Tu,Ling-Ling Yang,Zhi-Quan Tian,Zhi-Ling Zhang

Ag 2 S quantum dots (QDs) with high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) in the second near-infrared (NIR-II, 1000–1700 nm) window are urgently pursued. Halide atoms (especially chloride) have been studied as inorganic capping ligands on improving the PLQY of Cd-, Pb-based chalcogenide QDs; however, it remains a challenge to well replace the organic ligand with chloride ligand from silver chalcogenide QDs. Herein, a novel strategy to prepare Ag 2 S QDs with significant photoluminescence (PL) enhancement via chloride-mediated growth and passivation is demonstrated. The oleylamine and oleate ligands on the surface of silver-rich Ag 2 S QDs are readily replaced by chloride ligands due to the smaller size and higher binding affinity with Ag + . Upon partial ligand exchange and chloride passivation, the surface trap states in Ag 2 S QDs are reduced through a decrease of unsaturated surface Ag atoms. Therefore, Ag 2 S QDs with approximately 300-fold enhancement of PL intensity, and a PLQY of 47.6% at 1220 nm emission, and a lifetime of 256 ns are obtained because the nonradiative recombination is inhibited. This work reveals that the passivation of Ag 2 S QDs with chloride ligands is fully feasible, providing new insights into improving the PLQY of silver chalcogenide QDs.

A spatially resolved ratiometric electrochemiluminescence immunosensor for myoglobin detection using Au@Ag2S as signal amplification tags

Chen Chen,Jin-Xin Ma,Hui Wang,Hui-Qiao Liu,Shu-Wei Ren,Jun-Tao Cao,Yan-Ming Liu

It is promising to devise a signal-amplified ratiometric electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensing platform owing to the eliminated external interference and increased analysis reliability in complex samples. Herein, a spatially resolved ratiometric ECL immunosensor for myoglobin (Myo) detection was developed via resonance energy transfer (RET) for signal amplification. In the ECL system, Ru(bpy)32+-conjugated silica nanoparticles (Ru(bpy)32+@RuSi NPs) and sulfur quantum dots (SQDs) used as the potential-resolved ECL emitters were modified on two spatially resolved electrodes, respectively. Au@Ag2S NPs with a wide light absorption range could serve as perfect acceptors of Ru(bpy)32+@RuSi NPs, between which an effective RET could occur. For Myo detection, the signal from the Ru(bpy)32+@RuSi NP-modified electrode for Myo with various concentrations acted as the working signal (ECLanode) and that from the SQD electrode for Myo with fixed concentration served as a reference signal (ECLcathode). Owing to the steric hindrance and effective RET between Ru(bpy)32+@RuSi NPs and Au@Ag2S NPs, the working signal presented a great decrease in the presence of Myo. The ratio of ECLanode to ECLcathode showed a linear relationship with the logarithm of the Myo concentration in the range from 1.0 × 10−13 to 1.0 × 10−7 g mL−1. The limit of detection of the fabricated biosensor was 5.0 × 10−14 g mL−1. Moreover, it continued to show favorable detection results in human serum samples with recoveries ranging from 83.0 to 110%. The RET and ratiometric strategy on the spatially resolved platform endow the method with the merits of high selectivity, sensitivity, and accuracy and it can be envisioned that the method would provide a general tool for biomarker analysis.

Phenylboronic acid modified Ag2S NPs for bacterial targeting photothermal antibacterial therapy and promotion of wound healing

Yixiang HePeng,Zhi Xu,Ping Gou,Bosong Zhou,Quan Zheng,Ke Zhu,Xiangfeng Liu,Ruiyuan Liu,Xu Wu,Chao Zhang

Photothermal therapy is an antibacterial strategy based on the photothermal conversion effect, characterized by rapid action and a low tendency for resistance. However, traditional photothermal materials often lack the ability to specifically target bacteria, which limits their precise bactericidal efficacy in complex infection environments. A nanoplatform integrating photothermal therapy and targeted antibacterial action, composed of the targeting fragment 4-carboxyphenylboronic acid, photothermal agent Ag2S, and stabilizer phycocyanin (PBA-Ag2S@PC NPs), has been successfully established. The experimental results indicate that PBA-Ag2S@PC NPs exhibit exceptional photothermal conversion capabilities and demonstrate targeted antibacterial effects, enhanced by photothermal action, against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Both in vitro and in vivo tests confirm the excellent biocompatibility of PBA-Ag2S@PC NPs and their potential to promote wound healing. Overall, the constructed PBA-Ag2S@PC NPs represent an efficient targeted photothermal antibacterial nanoplatform, demonstrating significant potential for promoting the repair of infected wounds.

Laser-Assisted Synthesis of Ag2S-Quantum-Dot-in-Perovskite Matrix and Its Application in Broadband Photodetectors

Chen Zhao,Cailing Chen,Ran Wei,Yuting Zou,Wenchi Kong,Tao Huang,Zhi Yu,Jianjun Yang,Feng Li,Yu Han,Chunlei Guo,Weili Yu

Halide perovskites are widely explored as efficient photoresponsive materials for optoelectronic devices. However, understanding and controlling their underlying optical and electrical properties remains limited. Here, a novel approach is developed by introducing silver sulfide (Ag 2 S) quantum dots (QDs) into an MAPbBr 3 single crystal. The high-quality Ag 2 S-quantum-dot-in-perovskite (Ag 2 S-QDiP) matrixes synthesized through a laser-assisted inverse temperature crystallization (LA-ITC) strategy show broadband light-sensitive wavelength from 550 to over 1000 nm, and a balanced carriers mobility facilitates their transmission and collection. A Ag 2 S-QDiP-enabled photodetector is demonstrated, which exhibits considerably enhanced responsivity and detectivity of 1.17 A W −1 and 6.24 × 10 14 Jones at 532 nm, and 57.69 mA W −1 and 1.03 × 10 11 Jones at 1064 nm, respectively. The enhanced performance in the near-infrared (NIR) region can be attributed to the discrete heterojunction formed between MAPbBr 3 and Ag 2 S QDs, which enhances the light absorption in the NIR range and facilitates photogenerated excitons’ separation at the interface. The facile synthesis process, the more balanced transport behavior, and the ensuing improved device performance highlight introducing QDs into perovskite single crystal as an efficient strategy for tuning fundamental properties of perovskite and for developing high-efficiency broadband electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Efficient visible-light-driven S-scheme AgVO3/Ag2S heterojunction photocatalyst for boosting degradation of organic pollutants

Yangbin Liu,Nian Liu,Minghua Lin,Caifeng Huang,Zhijun Lei,Hongshuai Cao,Fugang Qi,Xiaoping Ouyang,Yun Zhou

The traditional semiconductor photocatalysts for solving the related environmental aggravation are often challenged by the recombination of photogenerated carriers. Designing an S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst is one of the keys to tackling its practical application problems. This paper reports an S-scheme AgVO 3 /Ag 2 S heterojunction photocatalyst constructed via a straightforward hydrothermal approach that exhibits outstanding photocatalytic degradation performances to the organic dye Rhodamine B (RhB) and antibiotic Tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) driven by visible light. The results show that AgVO 3 /Ag 2 S heterojunction with a molar ratio of 6:1 (V6S) possesses the highest photocatalytic performances, 99% of RhB can be almost degraded by 0.1 g/L V6S within 25 min light illumination, and about 72% of TC-HCl can be photodegraded with the act of 0.3 g/L V6S under 120 min light irradiation. Meanwhile, the AgVO 3 /Ag 2 S system exhibits superior stability and maintains high photocatalytic activity after 5 repeated tests. Moreover, the EPR measurement and radical capture test identify that superoxide radicals and hydroxyl radicals mainly contribute to the photodegradation process. The present work demonstrates that constructing an S-scheme heterojunction can effectively inhibit the recombination of carriers, providing insights into the fabrication of applied photocatalysts for practical wastewater purification treatment.

Leaf-Inspired Layered Hydrogel with Spatially Selective Ag/Ag2S Formation for Photothermal Antibacterial Therapy and Strain Sensing

Yue Xu,Jingshi Liang,Yanwei Du,Chunling Zhang,Zhihui Zhang,Bo Liu

The overuse of antibiotics has accelerated the emergence and spread of drug-resistant microorganisms, creating an urgent need for anti-infective materials with integrated therapeutic and monitoring functions. Herein, a leaf-inspired porous layered hydrogel, HEVCTM, was developed for photothermal antibacterial treatment and flexible sensing. The precursor hydrogel, HEVCTM, was first prepared by one-pot free-radical polymerization of the hydrophilic functional monomer VIM-CAT, the hydrophobic monomer TBA-MA, and N-hydroxyethyl acrylamide (HEAA). After immersion in AgNO3 solution, spatially selective formation of Ag/Ag2S was induced within the hydrogel. Specifically, Ag+ was in situ reduced to metallic Ag by the surface-enriched hydrophilic VIM-CAT, while Ag2S was generated in the middle region under the induction of hydrophobic TBA-MA, leading to the spontaneous formation of a sandwich-like layered architecture. Owing to the introduction of Ag2S, the hydrogel exhibited an enhanced near-infrared (NIR) photothermal response and achieved antibacterial efficiencies of 99% against Escherichia coli and 98% against Staphylococcus aureus. Meanwhile, the surface Ag layer endowed the hydrogel with good electrical conductivity and stable strain sensitivity, enabling real-time monitoring of human motions, including finger bending, frowning, and wrist bending. This work provides a simple strategy for constructing layered hydrogels with integrated photothermal antibacterial and flexible sensing functions and offers new insight into anti-infective flexible electronics.

A self-powered photoelectrochemical sensor based on an In2O3/Ag2S heterojunction for tetracycline detection and portable applications

Li Junyu,Li Haoyu,Hao Yujie,Pu Jiawei,Ye Linmei,Liu Wei

A self-powered photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor based on an In 2 O 3 /Ag 2 S heterojunction was successfully developed for the highly sensitive monitoring of tetracycline (TC) traces in water matrices. Benefiting from superior intrinsic optoelectronic properties, hexagonal tubular In 2 O 3 was initially synthesized via a solvothermal reflux-heating route followed by thermal calcination. Subsequently, the In 2 O 3 /Ag 2 S heterojunction was fabricated through an in situ growth strategy, yielding a remarkably amplified photoelectric response and a robust, stable initial photocurrent driven entirely by internal potential. Under optimized operational parameters, the developed sensor delivered a wide linear detection range spanning from 1 nM to 1 mM, coupled with an ultra-low detection limit of 0.87 nM. Moreover, the sensing platform demonstrated outstanding long-term stability, rapid transient response, robust anti-interference selectivity, and satisfactory reproducibility. Crucially, by integrating a dedicated microcontroller-based hardware module, device portability was successfully realized, offering a viable blueprint for the decentralization of PEC instrumentation. Although the current hardware prototype remains at a preliminary stage, this work establishes a rigorous and practical fundamental framework for low-cost, on-site antibiotic field screening. Sn-Ag2S quantum dots with enhanced photoluminescence quantum yield in the NIR-II window for bone imaging

Qing Li,Ning Liu,Dayu Wang,Lie Ma,Mingzhou Wu,Enna Ha,Junqing Hu,Zhe Zhang,Shuqing He

Silver sulfide (Ag 2 S) quantum dots (QDs), which emit light in the near-infrared II window (NIR-II, 1000–1700 nm), exhibit unique and remarkable potential in bioluminescence. However, their widespread application in experimental research is currently limited by a relatively low quantum efficiency. Cation exchange reactions have emerged as a remarkably versatile approach for synthesizing nanomaterials with adjustable structures and customizable compositions. In this study, we developed a NIR-II fluorescent probe based on Sn-doped silver sulfide (Sn-Ag 2 S) QDs via a straightforward cation exchange method. The stoichiometric ratios of precursors play a crucial role in tailoring the optical properties of the resultant materials during structural modifications involving cation exchange processes. By optimizing the ratio of Ag and Sn, we obtained ca. 16-fold quantum yields enhancement of Sn-Ag 2 S QDs in the NIR-II range, specifically around strong emission peak at ca. 1200 nm. Following hydrophilic modification, the Sn-Ag 2 S-GSH/MPA QDs exhibited high NIR-II fluorescence signal signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) with a ca. 1.7-fold increase compared to Ag 2 S-GSH/MPA QDs in the femur of mice, showing significant potential for bone imaging. To further investigate the QDs biodistribution mechanisms within osseous microenvironments, we devised a comprehensive multimodal analytical approach incorporating: (1) optical spectral analysis, (2) ultrastructural validation through transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and (3) spatial resolution mapping via laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM). These integrated methodologies consistently demonstrated preferential QDs accumulation within trabecular bone marrow compartments, revealing distinct biodistribution patterns in mineralized tissues.

Self-assembled Ag2S–Au Janus nanoparticles for targeted photo-responsive thermal ablation of cancer cells and bacteria

Binghua Long,Jingjing Zhang,Hairui Deng,Xu Sun,Yuguang Lu,Xiaoqing Lin,Abdul Wahab,Han Zhang,Muhammad Zubair Iqbal,Xiangdong Kong

Janus nanoparticles (JNPs) represent one of the most complex nanoparticles, and achieving precise control over their synthesis remains a significant challenge. Here, we explore gold–silver sulfide (Au–Ag2S) JNPs for targeted anticancer and antibacterial therapies. Au–Ag2S JNPs were synthesized and characterized using transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), x-ray powder diffraction, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirming their distinct dimeric structure with Au and Ag2S components. Surface modification with 1,2-Distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-Polyethylene Glycol (DSPE-PEG) and folic acid enhanced stability and enabled targeted delivery to cancer cells, resulting in AADF JNPs. AADF JNPs exhibited strong near-infrared (NIR-II) emission, ideal for in vivo imaging and photothermal therapy. In vitro studies demonstrated high biocompatibility and enhanced cellular uptake in 4T1 cancer cells compared to non-targeted JNPs. Upon laser irradiation, AADF JNPs effectively reduced 4T1 cell viability, demonstrating their phototherapeutic effect. Furthermore, AADF JNPs exhibited potent antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus under NIR irradiation, it achieved 78% tumor cell killing and 99% bacterial eradication. These findings highlight the potential of AADF JNPs as a promising solution for targeted cancer and bacterial infection treatments.

Interpreting the effects of natural organic matter on antimicrobial activity of Ag2S nanoparticles with soft particle theory

Yulei Liu,Tao Yang,Lu Wang,Zhuangsong Huang,Juan Li,Haijun Cheng,Jin Jiang,Suyan Pang,Jingyao Qi,Jun Ma

Natural organic matter (NOM) ubiquitously exists in natural waters and would adsorb onto the particle surface. Previous studies showed that NOM would alleviate the toxicity of nanomaterials , while the mechanism is seldom quantitatively interpreted. Herein, the effects of humic substances [Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) and Suwannee River humic acid (SRHA)] and biomacromolecules [alginate and bovine serum albumin (BSA)] on the aggregation and antimicrobial effects of silver sulfide nanoparticles (Ag 2 S-NPs) were investigated. The aggregation kinetics of Ag 2 S-NPs in electrolyte solutions were in agreement with the results based on Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory. The dynamic light scattering (DLS) results showed that the SRFA, SRHA, alginate and BSA molecules coated on the Ag 2 S-NPs surfaces. The NOM coating layer prevented salt-induced coagulation of Ag 2 S-NPs, and the effects of BSA and SRHA on Ag 2 S-NPs stabilizing were more obvious than that of SRFA and alginate. Flow cytometry analysis results suggested that BSA and SRHA were more effective on alleviating the Ag 2 S-NPs induced cell ( Escherichia coli ) membrane damage than SRFA and alginate. After interpreting the electrophoretic mobility (EPM) data of the NOM coated Ag 2 S-NPs by Ohshima's soft particle theory, it was found that the thickness of the NOM coating layers followed the orders of BSA > SRHA > alginate > SRFA. The E.coli cell membrane damage level was negatively correlated with the thickness and softness of the coating layer. NOM coating may physically alleviate the contact between NPs and E. coli cells and thus attenuate the extent of cell membrane damage caused by the NP-cell interaction. This work provides a new perspective for quantitatively interpreting the influence of NOM on the environmental behaviors and risks of nanomaterials.

Ag2S Quantum Dots Conjugated Chitosan Nanospheres toward Light-Triggered Nitric Oxide Release and Near-Infrared Fluorescence Imaging

Lianjiang Tan,Ajun Wan,Huili Li

Nanoscaled light-triggered nitric oxide (NO) delivery vehicles with the ability of near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging was presented, which consisted of chitosan (CS)-based S-nitrosothiols (SNO) and encapsulated silver sulfide quantum dots (Ag2S QDs). CS-SNO compounds that bore NO-storing functional groups were prepared via amino modification of chitosan. Water-soluble Ag2S QDs were synthesized and conjugated with the CS-SNO compounds with the aid of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). The biocompatible Ag2S-CS-SNO nanospheres, with dimension of ∼117 nm, exhibited bright NIR fluorescence and satisfactory photostability under NIR irradiation. The Ag2S-CS-SNO nanospheres could release NO under irradiation of UV or visible light at physiological pH and temperature yet would hardly release NO if NIR irradiation was applied. Cell imaging was successfully performed, demonstrating that the Ag2S-CS-SNO nanospheres could emit readily observable NIR fluorescence and release NO in living cells. The NIR fluorescence imaging of the Ag2S-CS-SNO nanospheres did not interfere with the light-triggered NO release from them, which would provide new perspectives for the application of multifunctional nanostructured materials in diagnostics and imaging.

Label-free fluorometric assay for cytochrome c in apoptotic cells based on near infrared Ag2S quantum dots

Meifang Cai,Caiping Ding,Xuanyu Cao,Fangfang Wang,Cuiling Zhang,Yuezhong Xian

As an important biomarker, cytochrome c (Cyt c) plays a crucial role in mitochondrial electron transport chain and cell apoptosis. Herein, a label-free near-infrared (NIR) Ag 2 S quantum dots (QDs)-based fluorescent strategy was constructed for the sensitive and selective detection of Cyt c. In this system, Cyt c was hydrolyzed by trypsin, and the resulting heme-peptide fragment exhibited peroxidase-like activity for catalytic decomposition of H 2 O 2 into hydroxyl radical (·OH). The presence of caffeic acid in this system resulted into the formation of caffeic acid-quinone due to the strong oxidizing ability of ·OH. The production of caffeic acid-quinone led to the fluorescence quenching of Ag 2 S QDs through electron transfer mechanism. Based on the cascade reaction , we successfully developed a label-free approach to detect Cyt c using Ag 2 S QDs as nanoprobes. Under the optimized conditions, the fluorescence intensity of Ag 2 S QDs was linearly relative to the concentration of Cyt c over the range from 2.0 to 150 nM with a detection limit of 1.7 nM. In addition, this strategy was successfully applied for quantitative detection of Cyt c in cell lysates of H 2 O 2 or etoposide (anticancer drug)-induced apoptotic cells, providing great potential application for cell-based oxidation pressure determination and screening of anticancer drugs.
