Antibiotic residue detection plays an important role in protecting human health, but real-time, rapid, and highly sensitive detection is still challenging. Herein, gold and silver nanoparticles (Au-Ag NPs) were in situ grown on the surface of optical fibers and a 50-nm thick gold film was deposited on the sensor's surface to fabricate Au-Ag@Au fiber SPR sensor. The sensitivity of the sensor reached 3512 nm/RIU in the refractive index range of 1.328-1.371. When analyzing antibiotic residues in food, the detection limits for Enro and Cip were 0.97 ng mL-1 and 0.70 ng mL-1, respectively. The recoveries of them ranged from 96.64-115.32% and 96.18-121.06% in milk samples. There is a high level of antibiotic residues in meat, milk, and aquatic products and this study has significant potential in food safety testing applications. Moreover, this study will be widely used in environmental monitoring (such as heavy metal ions), medical diagnosis (viruses), marine exploration, drug screening and other analytical fields as well.

A new Au-θ-Al 2 O 3 /Au/PCN hybrid is fabricated by the collaborative design strategy of active site and assembled structure, which achieves highly efficient photocatalytic CO 2 reduction (CO 2 R) performance. The energy band structure of PCN is adjusted significantly owing to the strong coupling effect of Au-θ-Al 2 O 3 /Au nanosheets intercalated in PCN nanosheets. The result brings about up-shift of CB, VB and Fermi energy level overall and decrease of bandgap, which is in favor of harvesting visible light, exciting VB electrons and increasing reduction ability. In addition, the multiple built-in electric fields are induced by electron diffusion effect between structural units, due to the tight interface contact in the Au-θ-Al 2 O 3 /Au/PCN hybrid, which can effectively promote the separation of photoinduced charge carriers. Furthermore, the atomically dispersed Au atoms confined by the oxygen vacancies in Au-θ-Al 2 O 3 /Au can provide the plenty of effective active sites for CO 2 R reaction, and meanwhile, the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect induced by Au nanoparticles on Au-θ-Al 2 O 3 /Au can improve the visible light response and produce abundant hot electrons to contribute to CO 2 R reaction. As a consequence, the average CO evolution rate of over the optimizing 10 %-Au-θ-Al 2 O 3 /Au/PCN hybrid (7.76 μmol g -1 h −1 ) reaches up to 3.53 times than that of PCN (2.20 μmol g -1 h −1 ) in the CO 2 R reaction, and maintains basically stable operation within 7 cycles of running, suggesting the superior activity and recyclability.

A highly stable Au@Au SERS nanolabels-based LFIA was developed for rapid FT analysis. • The AuNPs DTNB @Au exhibited high stability during a 90-day storage period with a RSD value of 7.71%. • The LOD of 2.27 fg mL −1 and the LDR of 10 fg mL −1 to 10 μg mL −1 were achieved. • The entire analysis process was completed within 15 min. Free testosterone (FT) serves as a crucial biomarker for endocrine assessment. Nevertheless, the rapid and accurate analysis of FT presents a significant challenge due to its low abundance and the interference from the matrix. In this study, we developed a lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) integrated with gold-core gold-shell nanoparticles (Au@Au NPs)-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) nanolabels for the rapid analysis of FT. The Raman signal molecules (RSMs) were embedded within the interstitial gap between the Au core and the Au shell, significantly contributing to SERS enhancement while also improving the stability of the SERS nanolabels. The proposed biosensor demonstrated a linear dynamic detection range (LDR) of 10 fg mL −1 to 10 μg mL −1 (R 2 = 0.9914) and a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.27 fg mL −1 , with the entire analysis process completed within 15 min. Additionally, the results indicated that the platform exhibited remarkable reproducibility, stability, and selectivity, along with reliable performance in human serum samples. This generates a simple, rapid, and highly sensitive strategy for FT detection, demonstrating considerable potential for point-of-care testing of low-abundance biomarkers. Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) are widely utilized to broaden the light absorption of the photocatalysts due to their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). However, the photocatalytic mechanism of Au/photocatalyst heterostructure involving charges transfer and reactive sites is still in dispute. Here, we synthesized a typical system Au/graphite carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) and demonstrate that the role of Au NPs in the LSPR enhanced photocatalysis . Under visible light, the photoexcited electrons of g-C 3 N 4 would transfer to Au NPs and reduce protons into hydrogen together with hot electrons of Au NPs. The hot holes of Au NPs would flow to g-C 3 N 4 and oxidize triethanolamine . Therefore, the Au NPs play a dual role, plasma, and cocatalyst, in the LSPR enhanced photocatalyst. When λ > 420 nm, Au /g-C 3 N 4 has hydrogen production of 159.9 μmol g −1 h −1 . Our findings confirm the significance of metal plasma in photocatalytic reaction and benefit designing photocatalysts with boosting performance.

In a previous work, gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) are found to inactivate RNA virus, but the effect of surface modification of Au NCs on its proliferation is still largely unknown. Here, the effect of surface modification of Au NCs on the proliferation of pseudorabies virus (PRV) by synthesizing two types of gold clusters with different surface modification, histidine stabilized Au NCs (His-Au NCs) and mercaptoethane sulfonate and histidine stabilized Au NCs (MES-Au NCs), is investigated. His-Au NCs rather than MES-Au NCs could strongly inhibit the proliferation of PRV, as indicated by the results of plaque assay, confocal microscopic analysis, Western blot assay, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. Further study reveals that His-Au NCs perform the function via blockage of the viral replication process rather than the processes of attachment, penetration, or release. Additionally, His-Au NCs are found to be mainly localized to nucleus, while MES-Au NCs are strictly distributed in cytoplasm, which may explain why His-Au NCs can suppress the proliferation of PRV, but not MES-Au NCs. These results demonstrate that surface modification plays a key role in the antiviral effects of Au NCs and a potential antiviral agent can be developed by changing the Au NC surface modification.

Gold deposition on Au nanoparticles is a common method to control the shape and further modify the properties of nanoparticles as their properties have a strong correlation with their nanostructures. For Au nanobipyramid (Au NBP), it has advantages such as the enhancement of electric field and a higher tunability in plasmon wavelength than the Au nanorod and thus owns a greater potential in shape control. In this paper, we demonstrate a scheme of depositing Au on the surface of Au NBP with the presence of a type of ligand 2-mercaptobenzoimidazole-5-carboxylic acid (MBIA) to synthesize Au NBP@Au dimers. The growth mode of Au depositing on Au NBP can be controlled by the coverage of MBIA. As the coverage is low, with a concentration of MBIA below 0.4 mM, the rough core–shell nanostructure is synthesized; However, as the coverage is high, with a concentration of MBIA over 0.8 mM, gold deposition may form islands on the surface of Au NBP. The SERS performance of Au depositing on Au NBP can also be enhanced by growth mode. For the rough-surface core–shell growth mode, the enhancement is more significant as the EF is improved from 3.5 × 10 5 to 1.06 × 10 6 than the islands-growing growth mode due to the coupling between core and shell. And our results show that with multiple types of nanosturctures easy to obtained by changing modified ligand coverage, the controlled growth has a great potential in the dimer design and SERS enhancement using Au NBP.

Background In vitro screening strategies based on the inhibition of α-glucosidase (GAA) activity have been widely used for the discovery of potential antidiabetic drugs, but they still face some challenges, such as poor enzyme stability, non-reusability and narrow range of applicability. To overcome these limitations, an in vitro screening method based on GAA@GOx@Cu-MOF reactor was developed in our previous study. However, the method was still not satisfactory enough in terms of construction cost, pH stability, organic solvent resistance and reusability. Thence, there is still a great need for the development of in vitro screening methods with lower cost and wider applicability. Results A colorimetric sensing strategy based on GAA/(Au–Au/IrO 2 )@Cu(PABA) cascade catalytic reactor, which constructed through simultaneous encapsulating Au–Au/IrO 2 nanozyme with glucose oxidase-mimicking and peroxidase-mimicking activities and GAA in Cu(PABA) carrier with peroxidase-mimicking activity, was innovatively developed for in vitro screening of GAA inhibitors in this work. It was found that the reactor not only exhibited excellent thermal stability, pH stability, organic solvent resistance, room temperature storage stability, and reusability, but also possessed cascade catalytic performance, with approximately 12.36-fold increased catalytic activity compared to the free system (GAA + Au–Au/IrO 2 ). Moreover, the in vitro GAA inhibitors screening method based on this reactor demonstrated considerable anti-interference performance and detection sensitivity, with a detection limit of 4.79 nM for acarbose. Meanwhile, the method owned good reliability and accuracy, and has been successfully applied to the in vitro screening of oleanolic acid derivatives as potential GAA inhibitors. Significance This method not only more effectively solved the shortcomings of poor stability, narrow scope of application, and non-reusability of natural enzymes in the classical method compared with our previous work, but also broaden the application scope of Au–Au/IrO 2 nanozyme with glucose oxidase and peroxidase mimicking activities, and Cu(PABA) carrier with peroxidase mimicking activity, which was expected to be a new generation candidate method for GAA inhibitor screening.

Thin layers of continuous gold have been deposited on the both sides of porous polypropylene films (PPF) via electroless plating method to form a sandwich structure with two conductive surfaces and an intermediate insulating layer (Au/PPF/Au). Then poly (3, 4-ethylenedioxy thiophene) (PEDOT) layers are electrodeposited on the two conductive sides via cyclic voltammetry method to form the sandwich-structured PEDOT-Au/PPF/Au-PEDOT. Gel electrolyte of H 3 PO 4 /polyvinyl alcohol (H 3 PO 4 /PVA) is then added to the sandwich-structured PEDOT-Au/PPF/Au-PEDOT to form the integrated flexible supercapacitor of Au-PEDOT|H 3 PO 4 /PVA|PEDOT-Au. The PEDOT-Au/PPF/Au-PEDOT sandwiched structures are characterized and the capacitive performances of the integrated flexible cells are investigated in detail. The results show that the optimum integrated flexible cell exhibits excellent cycling stability (91.8% capacitance retention after 20000 cycles) and relatively high areal specific capacitance. Furthermore, the cells of Au-PEDOT|H 3 PO 4 /PVA|PEDOT-Au not only exhibit excellent bending endurance (99.1% capacitance retention after 5000 repeated bending cycles), but also can be conveniently connected in series without additional wires. This integrated flexible cell may exhibit potential application in portable electronics.

Chiral plasmonic nanocrystals are promising materials for applications in enantioselective catalysis, DNA detection, and medical diagnosis. Herein, we demonstrate a simple and versatile strategy that produces plasmonic nanostructures with strong chiroptical responses by a chiral ligand mediated seeded growth approach. By modulation of the surface coverage of chiral ligands on Au nanotriangles, propeller-like structures with the growth of three arms on the tips of the triangles are produced with a high anisotropy factor. Finally, these Au chiral propellers can be used as substrates for the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection of chiral biomolecules, achieving chiral differentiation for enantiomers of biomolecules.

Elevated cholesterol is a major cardiovascular risk factor, but current detection methods are resource-intensive. Non-invasive point-of-care testing is promising yet limited by sensitivity, and the blood-saliva cholesterol correlation requires further investigation. We developed an electrochemical biosensor featuring cholesterol oxidase immobilized on screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE) modified with conductive Au-Ag@Au core-shell nanoparticles and Prussian blue/poly-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (PB-PEDOT) nanocomposites. Morphological, spectroscopic, and electrochemical analyses (including impedance spectroscopy, heterogeneous electron transfer kinetics, and active surface area quantification) confirmed the biosensor superior conductivity. The biosensor achieved exceptional performance: a broad linear range (0.01–1.0 mM), low detection limit (3.3 μM amperometric LOD; 2.8 μM via EIS), and high sensitivity (57.3 μA/mM·cm 2 amperometric; 781 Ω/mM·cm 2 impedimetric). Clinical validation demonstrated excellent agreement with standard colorimetric methods in human serum and saliva for cholesterol tested in biological compounds and robust stability. A strong serum-saliva correlation (Pearson's correlation coefficient as 0.928) supports noninvasive monitoring feasibility. The anti-interference capability of the proposed biosensor was evaluated against common interferents, including glucose, lactic acid, uric acid, ascorbic acid, bovine serum albumin, cysteine, and their mixture. The results confirmed its high specificity against these typical biological matrix components. Particularly significant is its non-invasive detection capability, which eliminates the need for painful blood draws or invasive sample collection procedures. A key innovation lies in the synergistic integration of conductive Au-Ag@Au core-shell nanoparticles with PB-PEDOT nanocomposites on SPCEs, which significantly enhances electron transfer and catalytic activity, yielding an exceptionally sensitive and stable sensing platform. The biosensor sets itself apart by achieving superior analytical performance concurrently with robust clinical validation in both serum and saliva, firmly establishing its potential for reliable non-invasive cholesterol monitoring.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) as the most toxic mycotoxin in contaminated food can greatly threaten human health, and sensitive and selective detection of AFB1 is thus highly desired. An ultrasensitive surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) aptasensor was developed for AFB1 detection in peanut oil samples. SH-cDNA modified Fe 3 O 4 @Au nanoflowers acted as capture probes, SH-Apt modified [email protected] nanospheres and commercial Cy3-Apt were used as reporter probes. Strong SERS signals of reporter probes were produced due to the recognition of AFB1 aptamer and its complementary strand (SH-cDNA). With the preferred binding of AFB1 aptamer to AFB1, reporter probes were released from capture probes, causing a linear decrease in SERS intensity. Therefore an ultralow detection limit of 0.40 pg·mL −1 in a wide linear range of 0.0001–100 ng·mL −1 was obtained and the sensibility of this SERS aptasensor was higher than that of the Cy3-Apt based SERS aptasensor. In addition, an excellent selectivity in interfering toxins and satisfactory recoveries of 96.6–115% in peanut oil samples were obtained, proving this aptasensor is a promising analytical tool in AFB1 detection.

The applications of metallic nanoclusters and nanoparticles in biological sensing have attracted special attention owing to their optical interaction based on fluorescence and surface plasmon resonance (SPR). In this work, we designed a fluorescent nanoprobe for the determination of L -cysteine ( L -Cys) based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from gold‑silver bimetallic nanoclusters (Au-Ag NCs) to gold nanorods (AuNRs). Firstly, the negatively charged Au-Ag NCs protected by bovine serum albumin (BSA) are directly adsorbed on the surface of the positively charged AuNRs through electrostatic interaction , and the FRET effect leads to distinct fluorescence quenching of Au-Ag NCs at 615 nm. The SPR wavelength of AuNRs is dependent on the aspect ratio, so the SPR of AuNRs could be tuned to have a better spectral overlap with fluorescence of Au-Ag NCs, which enhances the fluorescence quenching effect. Because the SH group of L -Cys has an affinity with gold, the addition of L -Cys can result in the release of Au-Ag NCs from the surface of AuNRs via forming Au S bonds. Thus, the introduction of L -Cys could effectively restore the fluorescence emission of the AuNRs/Au-Ag NCs system because of the restraint of FRET effect. Under the optimized conditions, the fluorescence recovery of AuNRs/Au-Ag NCs probe exhibits a linear response to L -Cys concentration ranging from 5 to 100 μM, and the corresponding theoretical detection limit (LOD) is 1.73 μM. Meanwhile, this method displays excellent sensitivity and selectivity for L -Cys over other amino acids , and it has been successfully applied to detect L -Cys in real samples.
