In this study, a carboxy esterification reaction was used to graft the hydrophilic polymers polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) onto the surface of carbon fibers (CFs). The properties of the grafted CFs were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and through the measurement of interlaminar shear strength (ILSS). SEM enabled the graft morphology on CF surfaces to be determined. In comparisons of grafted and non-grafted CFs, AFM indicated that the roughness was significantly improved; XPS showed that the concentration of oxygen-containing functional groups increased by 186.1%; TG showed that the grafting rate of CF -grafted PEG ( CF -g-PEG) was 0.5%, and that of CF -grafted PVA ( CF -g-PVA) was 2.0%; and the ILSS of CF -g-PEG and CF -g-PVA increased by 22.7% and 43.0%, respectively. We conclude that esterification grafting is an effective method for modifying the physicochemical properties of CFs and improving the interfacial adhesion of composites. POLYM. ENG. The weak interfacial adhesion between carbon fibers (CFs) and poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) strongly hinders the true potential of composites in high performance applications. Herein, a novel heterocyclic derivative of PEEK was utilized as a linkage between CFs surface and PEEK matrix by a facile and high effective two-step method. CFs were firstly grafted with sodium sulfonate groups via aryl diazonium treatment, and then modified by the sizing agent poly(aryl indole ketone) (PAIK). This promising method takes advantages of strong cation-π interaction between PAIK and activated CFs, increased surface roughness of CFs, as well as good compatibility between PAIK and PEEK. As a result, the tensile strength and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of CF/PEEK composites were both improved after aryl diazonium treatment and PAIK sizing. The highest ILSS obtained for the 1 wt% PAIK modified CF/PEEK composites, which was 62.97% higher than that of untreated CFs based composites. Finally, the interfacial reinforcing mechanism in modified composites was proposed by analyzing the interfacial microstructure. This research provided a promising approach to produce high performance CF reinforced thermoplastic polymeric composites.

Many new laboratory-scale photothermal conversion materials have been developed for purification or desalination but developing easy-to-manufacture, low-cost and scalable materials with high efficiency of solar energy to thermal energy still faces great challenges. Herein, we provided a simple and effective method for self-assembly of dopamine-modified boron nitride (BN-PDA) and carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) layers on cotton fabric (CF), and assembled a solar steam generator by using the as-prepared composite cotton fabric as photothermal layer, cotton yarns (CYs) as water supply channel, and thermally insulated polystyrene (PS) foam as a supporting material. This solar steam generator exhibited a superior evaporation rate of 1.55 kg m −2 h −1 and an excellent photothermal conversion efficiency of ∼83.66% under 1.0 sun irradiance (1.0 kW m −2 ), with optical absorption up to 93.50% in the wavelength of 300–2500 nm. Meanwhile, excellent quality of freshwater from seawater and dyeing wastewater was also demonstrated. Different from other solar steam generator systems, this assembled fabric is cost-effective and readily available, suitable for large-scale industrial applications. Notably, the results show that multi-layer structure imparts it with outstanding mechanical flexibility and robustness, making it a potential candidate for fresh water supply in remote, off-grid or water-contaminated areas.

3D needle-punched CF/PEEK composites are a kind of composites with promising applications in multiple fields, such as implant materials, but their mechanical properties in the Z-axis and interlaminar are still weak at present. In this study, a bio-inspired reinforcement structure based on ladybug forewing was developed to achieve directed reinforcement of 3D needle-punched CF/PEEK composites. Carbon fiber yarns were stitched into the 3D needle-punched CF/PEEK preforms according to the set structure, and the bio-inspired CF/PEEK composites were obtained after hot pressing. The interlaminar and in-plane mechanical properties of the composites were investigated at different stitch lengths. The results showed that the addition of the bio-inspired structure greatly improved the interlaminar shear strength of the composites, reaching 111.30 MPa, an enhancement of 95.06%. The in-plane mechanical properties, including tensile, flexural, and compression, were also significantly improved to different degrees. The “structure-effect” relationship in the bio-inspired CF/PEEK composites was investigated, and the effectiveness of such a bio-inspired reinforcement structure was demonstrated. This new reinforcement strategy provides a new idea for the improvement of the mechanical properties of multi-stage carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic resin matrix composites. Highlights The in-plane and interlaminar mechanical properties of composites were simultaneously improved. Up to 95.06% improvement in interlaminar shear strength. A novel bionic strategy of directional reinforcement was developed. The “structure-effect” relationship in the composites was investigated.

The roller is an important part of the belt conveyor used in coal transportation. Due to the harsh environment of coal mines, the rollers are in a state of high load and high friction for a long time, which causes wear failure and has a serious impact on the reliability and safety of the equipment. In order to prepare roller material with excellent bearing performance and friction performance, CF/PUE composites were prepared by pouring method with polyurethane as the matrix and carbon fiber as reinforcement. Due to the low surface activity of unmodified carbon fibers and poor bonding performance with the matrix, MoS2was generated on the surface of carbon fiber by the in situ generation method in this paper. It was found that the mechanical properties of MoS2/CF/PUE composites were better when the CF content was 0.3 wt%. The Shore hardness reached 92.2 HA, which is 10% higher than pure polyurethane. The tensile strength was 38.44 MPa, which is 53% higher than pure polyurethane. The elongation at break was 850%, which is 16% higher than pure polyurethane. The maximum compressive stress was 2.32 MPa, which is 42% higher than pure polyurethane. The friction coefficient was much lower than that of pure PUE composites, the friction coefficient was 0.284, which is 59% lower than pure polyurethane.Keywords:PUE;CF;MoS2;mechanical properties;friction performance

Ablative thermal protection materials are widely used in entry and re-entry vehicles which benefit from their strong adaptability. However, long-term ablation has been a limitation due to the consumption of the matrix of the ablative materials. In this work, the microstructure evolution and ablation properties of the MoSi 2 /mica-modified CF/BPR composites with and without hollow silicate glass microspheres (HSMs) under protracted ablation have been investigated. The mass ablation rates decreased while the linear ablation rates increased when the ablation times were prolonged. The composites with 30 vol.% HSMs have good insulation properties, shown by a lower backside temperature of 240.9 °C after 100 s of ablation. The decrease in thermal conductivity limited heat transfer in both the axial and horizontal directions. This led to heat concentration and severe ablation at the central surface. The three-dimensional porous and the ladder structure formed in the transfer region, and the features gradually disappeared while extending the ablation times because of the flame erosion and formed liquid phases. The heat diffusion and concentration within the matrix established a gradient temperature field, which determined the ablation behavior and mechanism, providing valuable insights for the development of advanced ablative thermal protection materials.

The increasing demand for carbon fiber/polyether-ether-ketone (CF/PEEK) composites in marine and aerospace engineering is driven by their potential for weight reduction and enhanced structural flexibility. However, the inherent weak interface poses a challenge, leading to stress concentration and structural failures. Herein, aqueous PEKC-COOH sizing agent on CF as a soft unit (SCF) and hydroxyapatite (HA) nanomaterial as a rigid unit establish a regulable active interface structure, synergistically enhancing the interface adhesion through mechanical interlocking and chemical bonding of the CF/PEEK composites. Under external loading, the PEKC-COOH sizing agent allows for uncurling of molecular chains at the interface, promoting slip of HA nanomaterials and dissipating a significant amount of energy during fracture progression. The SCF-HA/PEEK composites exhibited significant enhancements in interlaminar shear strength and flexural strength, with an increase of 65.1% and 49.8%, respectively, compared with the pristine composites. Meanwhile, the salt-spray resistance of the composites has been significantly improved. Following a 72-h salt spray test, the ILSS retention ratios of modified SCF-GB/PEEK composites were determined to be 91.7%. Remarkably, the use of cationic, non-ionic, and zwitterionic surfactants reduced the growth time of HA on the fiber surface in simulated body fluids to 15 min compared to several days using conventional methods. This study not only improves production efficiency and reduces manufacturing costs but also provides a research foundation for industrial manufacturing. Furthermore, the novel interface structure design broadens the applicability of CF/PEEK composites in hygrothermal and salt-spray environments. Highlights Regulable interface was formed by in situ growth of HA on fiber sizing agent. HA nanomaterial growth time in SBF was reduced from several days to 15 min. Modified composites increase ILSS by 65.1% and flexural strength by 49.8%. Modified composites maintain 91.7% ILSS after a 72-h salt-spray resistance test.

Despite the impressing advances on sizing agents for CF/PEEK composites, the aromatic backbone of the polymer precursors utilized in the vast majority of reports compromises the dispersity and ductility of the slurry, subsequently resulting in inferior overall performance of the composites. Meanwhile, most resins employed for sizing agents in existing reports are based on petroleum resources. Herein, a bio-based waterborne sizing agent utilizing semi-aromatic poly ether ketones (PIEK-C) derived from isosorbide and phenolphthalein has been disclosed, featured by its salutary dispersity, exceptional thermal stability, higher glass transition temperatures, and broader applicability. Due to the structural similarity between the sizing and resin matrix, the protocol endowed CF/PEEK composites with ameliorated overall performance, addressing issues related to inadequate adhesion of CF with PEEK resin, as well as environmental pollution commonly associated with existing commercial epoxy and solvent-based sizing agents. The T g and T 5% of PIEK-C-5050 were 205.08 and 427.16°C, respectively. The particle size range of the PIEK-C sizing agents spanned from 66.32 to 84.63 nm. The flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength of the composites experienced a respective 993.92 MPa (30.73%) and 83.32 MPa (36.97%) increase compared to untreated CF/PEEK composites following sizing treatment with PIEK-C-5050, underscoring expedient intermolecular interactions based on comparable solubility and π-π stacking effects between the PEEK and PIEK-C components. This study introduced an efficient and eco-friendly approach to enhance the interfacial properties of CF/PEEK composites. Highlights PIEK-C resin is employed for the first time to prepare carbon fiber sizing agents. The PIEK-C sizing agent significantly fortified the surface energy and wettability of carbon fibers. The CF/PEEK composites after treatment with PIEK-C sizing agent showed excellent heat resistance. The ILSS and bending strength of the composites were significantly increased by 36.97% and 30.73%, respectively.

The TiO 2 is grafted by triethylamine and is introduced on the surface of the carbon fiber, which improves the wettability and activity of the carbon fiber surface and at the same time strengthens the carbon fiber/polyimide composite. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the triethylamine grafting successfully on TiO 2 . Scanning electron microscope (SEM) results show that when the trimethylamine concentration is 1.0%, a uniform coating is formed on the surface of the carbon fiber. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and interfacial shear strength (IFSS) were increased by 32% and 69%, respectively.

Synthesis of a A-PAAS sizing agent featuring a “rigid-flexible” synergistic structure. • The flexural strength and ILSS of 0.5-CF/PEEK were largely increased by 59.8% and 35.0%. • The possible interfacial modification and thermal properties is comprehensive analyzed. • The as-prepared A-PAAS sizing agent is environmentally friendly. Polyimide (PI) has attracted increasing attention in recent decades for interfacial optimization of carbon fiber/polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK) composites owing to its outstanding thermal resistance. This study effectively incorporated a novel polyimide sizing agent (A-PAAS) by introducing non-coplanar alicyclic rings, amide functional groups, and ammonium ions into the polymer backbone through molecular design. This structural design effectively reduces the packing density of molecular chains, facilitating easier spreading during the sizing process and thereby enhancing penetration into fiber pores. Furthermore, the prepared A-PAAS exhibited outstanding thermal stability, with a 5% weight-loss temperature (T 5% ) of 435.0 °C, which exceeds the processing temperatures of most commercially available thermoplastic resins. The work shows that the CF/PEEK composite, after sizing, exhibits effectively enhanced mechanical properties; the interlaminar shear strength and flexural strength increased by 35.0% and 59.8%, respectively, compared to the unsized composite. This work introduces non-coplanar aliphatic rings, ether bonds, and amide bonds into the sizing agent, thereby establishing a synergistic reinforcement bridge at the CF-PEEK interface. Improving the surface interfacial adhesion and wettability of CF, whilst establishing a hydrogen-bond cross-linking network within the sizing agent and PEEK, makes a key contribution to enhancing the composite's macroscopic mechanical properties. In brief, this efficient and environmentally friendly A-PAAS sizing agent provides an innovative strategy for the interfacial modification of CF/PEEK composites. Manganese-based aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have garnered growing interest in the area of adaptable and wearable devices because of their properties of simple manufacturing, superior safety, and ecological compatibility. Nevertheless, the actual implementation of Mn-based cathodes has faced challenges due to their inadequate conductivity and poor cycling performance. In this study, a chemical synthesis approach was employed to directly grow MnO 2 on the surface and within the interlayer spaces of MXene. Subsequently, the composite was coated onto carbon felt (CF) using the impregnation method to fabricate binder-free MnO 2 /MXene/CF cathodes for AZIBs. The excellent conductivity and structural stability of MXene effectively enhance ion/electron transport kinetics and mitigate irreversible volume changes of MnO 2 during charge and discharge processes. CF with excellent electrical conductivity and flexibility serves as an ideal current collector and substrate material for loading active materials. Moreover, its distinctive three-dimensional porous structure facilitates optimal interaction between the electrode material and the electrolyte. Consequently, the flexible quasi-solid-state AZIB, consisting of the optimized MnO 2 /MXene/CF cathode and zinc foil anode, exhibits high charge storage performance (a specific capacity of 429.1 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and an excellent energy density of 343.2 Wh kg −1 at 79.9 W kg −1 ). Density functional theory analysis reveals that the incorporation of MXene enhances electron adsorption on MnO 2 and significantly alters the density of states of MnO 2 , thus markedly improving its conductivity. These encouraging findings suggest that manganese-based materials hold great potential for application as cathodes in flexible quasi-solid-state AZIBs.

Poor bonding occurs with resin due to surface inertness of carbon fiber (CF), so CF surfaces were often treated. In some common surface treatments, sizing was a simple and effective modification method. Polyurethane (PU) was used as the main component of sizing agents due to its similar structure to polyamide 6 (PA6). The CF/PA6 composites’ interfacial properties were improved using PU as a sizing agent. Meanwhile, in this paper, glycidol (GLD) was introduced into the PU emulsion so that the epoxy group reacted with the carboxyl group on the acidified CF. After testing, when the content of glycidyl in the sizing agent is 2%, the CF/PA6 composites showed an important improvement in tensile, impact, and flexural strengths, which increased by 49.4%, 94.6%, and 53.2%, respectively. In addition, the effect of modified WPU sizing agents with different GLD contents on the properties of CF/PA6 composites was investigated.
