Mixed-dimensional COF membrane is constructed with 2D COF nanosheet and 1D COF nanotube. • 2D COF nanosheets served as the building block to provide in-plane mass transfer channels • 1D COF nanotube acts as intercalator to construct additional interlayer mass transfer channels. • The membrane exhibits high permeance for solvents and high rejection for dyes. • The membrane shows stable separation performance in long-term test. Covalent organic framework (COF) membrane holds significant potential in organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN), and the regulation of mass transport channels in covalent organic framework nanosheets (CON) assembled membrane is the key for the high separation performance. Herein, we utilized two-dimensional (2D) CON and one-dimensional (1D) COF nanotube (COF-NT) to prepare mixed-dimensional CON/COF-NT membrane for fast OSN. 2D CON served as the building block of the membrane to provide in-plane mass transfer channels and 1D COF-NT acted as intercalator to construct additional interlayer mass transfer channels, thus constructing the stable mixed-dimensional channels to enhance the membrane permeance while ensuring its high selectivity. As a result, CON/COF-NT membrane exhibited high permeance of 293 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 , 354 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and 366 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 for water, acetone and acetonitrile, respectively, while maintaining high rejection rates of 96.0%, 98.6% and 100% for Methyl blue, Congo red and Alcian blue 8GX, respectively. Furthermore, compared with using 1D cellulose nanofiber as the intercalator, CON/COF-NT membrane maintained more stable water permeance with transmembrane pressure ranging from 0.5 bar to 3.0 bar, and separation performance for the 7-day long-term test. This study provides a novel approach to regulating the mass transport channels in COF membrane to achieve fast OSN. Mixed-dimensional COF membrane is prepared using two-dimensional COF nanosheet and one-dimensional COF nanotube as the building block to provide in-plane mass transfer channels and intercalator to construct additional interlayer mass transfer channels, respectively, leading to fast organic solvent nanofiltration. Although covalent organic frameworks (COFs) typically exhibit electrical insulating properties due to their wide band gaps and closed-shell electronic configurations, their π-π stacking structures enable them to act as electron donors, thereby showing potential application value in the field of conductive materials. In this study, a cation-induced COF-based conductive hydrogel with tunable electrical conductivity was successfully fabricated by establishing high-speed cation migration channels through cation-π interactions between the electron-donating two-dimensional triazine polymer (2D-TP-PB) and the electron-accepting quaternized chitosan (QCS). Theoretical calculations confirmed that in the 2D-TP-PB/QCS composite system, relying on the cation-π interaction between electron donor 2D-TP-PB and electron acceptor quaternized chitosan (QCS), the band gap of 2D-TP was significantly reduced from 2.715 to 1.763 eV. Meanwhile, the incorporation of 2D-TP-PB greatly increased the hydrogel’s electrical conductivity from 1.9 mS/cm to 9.8 mS/cm, realizing the tunable electrical conductivity of cationic hydrogels. Furthermore, the synergistic effect between abundant dynamic bonds and bulky hydrophobic phenylboronic acid pinacol ester endowed the hydrogels with ultrahigh stretchability exceeding 700%. The fantastic features of COF-based hydrogel, including excellent antifreeze performance, long-lasting moisturizing property, efficient self-healing ability, good adhesiveness, and remarkable antibacterial activity, make it a promising motion sensor for detecting physiological signals such as finger bending, breathing, heartbeat, pulse, and voice.

Accurate detection of Cys/Hcy levels is critical for evaluating human health conditions. In this study, we developed an innovative fluorescence/colorimetric dual-mode sensing system to detect Cys/Hcy by dynamically adjusting the level of oxTMB. The system utilizes Au@PtNPs with peroxidase-like activity to catalyze the oxidation of colorless 3,3,5,5- tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue oxTMB, and TAPB@DMTP COF, a fluorescent nanomaterial with abundant spatial pores, could be used as a carrier for oxTMB, and the two were made fluorescence quenching due to the fluorescence inner filter effect. The addition of Cys/Hcy allowed the originally dispersed Au@PtNPs to aggregate to inhibit their peroxidase-like activity, thus indirectly regulating the oxTMB content. At this point, the absorbance signal decreased and fluorescence was restored. To this end, we have developed a special fluorescence/colorimetric dual-mode sensing system for the detection of Cys/Hcy. The detection limits of the fluorescence and colorimetric methods for Cys/Hcy were determined to be 0.788 nM (Cys), 0.663 nM (Hcy), and 1.795 nM (Cys), 1.886 nM (Hcy), respectively. The sensing system was also evaluated for its ability to withstand interferences from 12 anions and 13 amino acids, demonstrating excellent unti-interference and selectivity. The recoveries of the two methods for detecting Cys/Hcy in fetal bovine serum were found to be 98.9%-114.3% with RSDs as low as 0.52% (fluorescence) and 0.92% (colorimetric), respectively.

Covalent organic framework (COF) materials exhibit considerable potential for membrane separation applications due to their long-range ordered pore structures, tunable pore chemical microenvironments, and excellent thermochemical stability. However, the intrinsic pore sizes of COF materials often exceed the kinetic diameters of target gas molecules, thereby limiting their efficacy in gas separation. In this study, we present a strategy for the functionalization of ionic COF nanosheets using ionic liquids. The immobilization of ionic liquids within the pores and interlayers of ionic COF nanosheets was accomplished through a straightforward physical blending method, which leverages the electrostatic interactions between the abundant charged groups from the ionic COF nanosheets and the ionic liquids. Subsequently, we prepared CO 2 separation membranes with a thickness of less than 100 nm. The resulting COF membranes demonstrated excellent separation performance with a CO 2 permeance of up to 1116 GPU and a CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 20.3 as well as good stability. This study offers a simple and effective approach for developing high-performance COF membranes for carbon capture.

The rapid industrialization and extensive use of synthetic dyes have led to significant environmental pollution, particularly through dye wastewater, which poses severe ecological risks. Conventional single treatment methods often struggle to effectively remove complex and stable dye molecules. In this study, we developed COF-based chitosan hydrogel microspheres by combining COF-LZU1 and Co(OH)₂ via co-precipitation and self-assembly techniques. The synergistic effect between COF and Co(OH)₂ enabled simultaneous adsorption and degradation of neutral red, significantly enhancing the adsorption capacity. Under optimal conditions (15 mg of composite material, 20 min reaction time, pH = 7), the composite exhibited an adsorption capacity of 1325.48 mg/g and a degradation efficiency of 100 %, surpassing the performance of most conventional adsorbents. Furthermore, the incorporation of Co(OH)₂ into COF enhanced the stability of the composite material, as indicated by thermodynamic analysis and adsorption performance across different component ratios. Adsorption process modeling revealed that the adsorption kinetics fit well with the Elovich model, while isothermal adsorption followed the Langmuir model. Among common interfering substances, CH₃COO − was found to enhance the catalytic process, whereas humic acid inhibited it. Quenching experiments and EPR analysis confirmed that superoxide anion radicals (•O₂ − ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O₂) were the primary active species in the catalytic process, with hydroxyl radicals (•OH) playing a relatively minor role. This study highlights the synergistic interaction of COF and Co(OH)₂ in improving adsorption performance, stability, and catalytic efficiency, providing a novel strategy for the preparation of advanced composite materials and new insights into pollutant removal mechanisms.

Three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks are promising multifunctional materials for applications in adsorption, separation, and catalysis. However, despite the continuous synthesis of an increasing number of three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks, little is known about the crystal growth pathways. Here, we report the real-time visual observation of the crystal growth process of COF-300 and LZU-79, two typical three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks, using in situ dark-field optical microscopy. Our dark-field optical microscopy imaging results reveal that two crystal-growth pathways are simultaneously operative during the liquid growth of COF-300 and LZU-79 microcrystals, including classical crystal growth modes and non-classical oriented attachment mechanisms. Specifically, detailed tracking of the trajectories between two rod-shaped single-crystal COF-300 pairs suggests that the oriented attachment process undergoes several distinct stages such as approach, alignment at (021) facets, tip-to-tip attachment, fusion, and shaping. Theoretical simulation results show that (021) facets of COF-300 microcrystals, which have a lower repulsive energy barrier due to steric solvation forces from intervening solvents, are energetically more favorable than (010) facets, inducing the oriented attachment between adjacent facets. This work enables a fundamental understanding of how three-dimensional covalent organic framework microcrystals grow dynamically, which can aid the further design of three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks with enhanced performances.

Uranium, which was abundant in the ocean but existed in the form of uranyl tricarbonate ([UO 2 (CO 3 ) 3 ] 4− ) with an extremely low concentration of 3.3 ppb, was a significant element of nuclear energy. It is of immediate significance to the research into uranium extraction by the exploration of adsorbents for environment and resource sustainability. Herein, the new ionic covalent organic frameworks (iCOFs) named COF-DG containing the guanidine groups was designed and synthesized via Schiff base reaction between diaminoguanidine hydrochloride and 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol. The adsorption performance indicated that the COF-DG possessed an uptake capacity of 65.6 mg g −1 toward the [UO 2 (CO 3 ) 3 ] 4− , attributed to the chemical interaction and anion exchange between [UO 2 (CO 3 ) 3 ] 4− and the cationic COF-DG with Cl − , as well as the electrostatic attraction. Besides, the COF-DG exhibited a higher affinity and selectivity toward [UO 2 (CO 3 ) 3 ] 4− in the presence of the competing anions. Furthermore, the COF-DG displayed an antibacterial rate of 82% against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli owing to the guanidine groups. This work contributes new insights into the further development of iCOFs, for applying as a potential candidate in uranium extraction from seawater in practical engineering. Graphical abstract The new ionic covalent organic frameworks named COF-DG was designed and exploited via Schiff base reaction, which exhibited a higher affinity and selectivity toward the [UO 2 (CO 3 ) 3 ] 4− .

The resurgence of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) necessitates advancements in electrolyte engineering to regulate ion transport and manipulate interfacial characteristics. Noteworthy strategies encompass the development of high-efficiency lithium-ion conductors for quasi-solid-state composite electrolytes. In this context, two crystalline 3D COFs are presented that are thoughtfully designed by selecting decasilsesquioxane (T 10 ) cage building blocks and linear linkers to open up efficient ion-conducting pathways. The cage silsesquioxane-knotted COFs (CSQ-COFs) feature densely interconnected pore channels and a multimodal pore size distribution, which gives them the potential to function as ionic conductors. In addition, the dissociation of electrolyte salts by the silsesquioxane framework, along with the strong adsorption of anions, synergistically enhances ion transport. The coin cell assembled with CSQ-COF displays an ionic conductivity of 0.727 mS cm −1 at 80 °C, an E a of 0.12 eV, and t Li+ of 0.83. Therefore, Li symmetrical cell demonstrates excellent Li plating/stripping behaviors for 600 h under 0.5 mA cm −2 . The Li/LiFePO 4 cell containing the CSQ-COF solid-state electrolyte delivers an initial discharge capacity of ≈159.6 mAh g −1 at a rate of 0.5 C at room temperature with excellent capacity retention after 150 cycles. This work provides a novel insight on the development of 3D COF ionic conductors.

Gold is a widely used non-renewable resource, and its recycling is the key to solve the problem of dwindling gold resources. In this study, a novel covalent organic framework adsorbent (COF-pPDI@TAP) is developed for efficient Au(III) capture. The synthesis of the adsorbent was confirmed by FTIR and XRD characterization. The adsorption performance of COF-pPDI@TAP was studied by batch adsorption experiments. The maximum adsorption of Au(III) by COF-pPDI@TAP reached 779.02 mg/g in the adsorption experiments. Kinetic and isotherm results show that the adsorption is a monolayer chemisorption process controlled by particle diffusion. The positive value of ΔH indicates that COF-pPDI@TAP needs to absorb energy to maintain the reaction during the adsorption of Au(III), and the reaction is endothermic. In addition, COF-pPDI@TAP maintained a very high adsorption efficiency after five cycles of experiments, and could selectively capture Au(III) from different concentrations of polymetallic solutions. COF-pPDI@TAP has excellent anti-interference ability and good reusability. It is demonstrated by zeta potential, XRD, XPS and FT-IR that electrostatic interaction, chelation and reduction occurred during the adsorption process. These studies demonstrate the value of COF-pPDI@TAP for gold recovery applications.

Covalent organic frameworks (COF) are deemed as disruptive membrane materials owing to their versatile functionalities, high stability and ordered nanochannels. However, the size mismatch between the COF intrinsic pore and gas molecules becomes a grand challenge when using COF membrane for carbon capture. Herein, we propose a new type of polymer-functionalized COF laminar membranes through grafting CO 2 -phlic polyethyleneimine (PEI) polymer onto carboxylic acid COF (cCOF) laminar membranes. The cCOF nanosheets with high density of carboxyl groups are prepared via modified single phase solution method and then assembled to fabricate membranes. Further, the cCOF membranes are functionalized with PEI using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide/N-Hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS) coupling chemistry. The introduction of abundant amino groups from PEI afford the affinity of membranes toward CO 2 . Meanwhile, the graft of the PEI polymers reduces the defects or pinholes on the membrane surface. As a result, the PEI functionalized cCOF membranes exhibit a high CO 2 permeance of 1004 GPU and a CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 33.7, which reach the carbon capture target performance and show great prospect for treating real flue gas. Our approach of functionalizing cCOF membranes with tailored functionalities may inspire the design of molecule-selective COF membranes.

Fluorine-functionalized covalent organic frameworks (F-COFs), owing to their multiple interactions such as F-F forces and hydrophobicity, have been widely used as candidate materials for stationary phases and other analytical purposes. How to incorporate F-COFs with a silica matrix (SiO 2 ) through a low-energy consumption method, and investigating the chromatographic properties for pharmaceutical targets, is of vital importance and requires significant further research. In this study, pentafluorophenyl (PFP) was used as a functional group to prepare PFP-COF@SiO 2 at room temperature through two distinct synthetic approaches. The resulting PFP-COF@SiO 2 materials, designated as I and II, were systematically characterized, and their chromatographic performances, influential factors, and retention mechanisms were investigated. These two COF materials demonstrated similar material properties and effective separation towards phenolic acids, alkaloids and antiviral drugs. The results indicated that the designed two synthetic routes were to some extent tolerable and compatible with the order of reagent addition. This work offers a novel method for preparing PFP-COF@SiO 2 stationary phases oriented for pharmaceutical chromatographic applications.

Background Methyl parathion, a potent organophosphorus insecticide, is extensively employed in agriculture and animal husbandry, leading to significant environmental contamination with pesticide residues, posing a grave threat to human health. This compound irreversibly inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the human nervous system, resulting in the accumulation of acetylcholine (ACh), which is detrimental. Various enzyme activity-based assays have been explored due to its pathogenic mechanism, yet these methods are fraught with limitations. Thus, the development of a highly selective, sensitive, rapid, and effective method for detecting methyl parathion residues is crucial. Result In this study, we introduce a novel, non-enzymatic fluorescent probe for methyl parathion detection. This probe is designed to specifically trigger the fluorescence signal of TAPB-DMTA-COF through the interaction of copper ions with the imine moiety within the TAPB-DMTA-COF structure. The detection of methyl parathion in aqueous environments is facilitated by the Inner filter effect. Compared to previously reported enzyme-catalyzed reaction probes, this probe exhibits a faster reaction time, is not influenced by enzyme activity, and demonstrates high specificity and sensitivity. The probe exhibits a good linear response in the concentration range of 0.56–5.46 μM, with a detection limit of 30.698 nM. Furthermore, the probe yielded satisfactory recoveries of methyl parathion (93.47 %–99.5 %) in different real water samples through spiking recovery experiments. Significance The fluorescent probe based on Cu 2+ /TAPB-DMTA-COF realizes the fluorescence detection of methyl parathion. The establishment of this simple, efficient, and rapid detection platform offers a new approach for the detection of pesticide residues in aquatic environments. The introduction of metal ions, along with the construction of COF materials and the use of fluorescence signal turn-on, provides a rational design strategy for such detection methods.
