Nitrogen-rich carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) based on natural deep eutectic solvents: Simultaneous detection and treatment of trace Co2+ under saline conditions

Hongwei Ren,Meiyu Li,Yize Liu,Tengda Zhao,Ruoyao Zhang,Erhong Duan

Trace Co 2+ , when present in large quantities, is harmful to the environment and therefore cannot be ignored. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is a standard method used to detect metal ions , however, detecting trace Co 2+ under high saline conditions can be challenging. Similarly, existing Co 2+ treatment methods are prone to secondary pollution and have high energy consumption. Therefore, it is necessary to find an efficient and non-polluting method for Co 2+ detection and treatment. This study successfully synthesized nitrogen-rich carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) based on natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) using a one-step solvothermal method. The prepared N-CQDs exhibited excellent fluorescence and high salt tolerance. The simultaneous detection and treatment of trace Co 2+ in water under high salinity conditions were achieved for the first time. The response of the N-CQDs to Co 2+ under saline condition was linear in the range of 5–250 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.2269 μM. Feasibility of practical application was assessed by quantitative detection of Co 2+ in real water samples. Furthermore, the N-CQDs can treat Co 2+ , and the removal rate was 99.98%.

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs)/noble metal co-decorated MIL-53(Fe) as difunctional photocatalysts for the simultaneous removal of Cr(VI) and dyes

Zhoujun He,Ruowen Liang,Chen Zhou,Guiyang Yan,Ling Wu

Industrial sewage often contain metal ions and dyes, and it is difficult to efficiently remove them simultaneously. In this work, novel ternary MIL-53(Fe)/carbon quantum dots/noble metal (MIL-53(Fe)/CQDs/MNPs, MNPs = Ag, Pd, Au) nanocomposites have been rationally constructed and successfully fabricated by a facile two-step strategy with self-assembling and in-situ photoreduction. The resulting MIL-53(Fe)/CQDs/2%Au composite exhibits excellent photoactivity for the Cr(VI) reduction, the reduction ratio is nearly 100% after 20 min of visible light illumination. The rate constant of MIL-53(Fe)/CQDs/2%Au is calculated to be 0.1820 min −1 , which is around 7.4, 2.76, 1.77 and 1.47 times higher than that of as-prepared MIL-53(Fe), MIL-53(Fe)/CQDs, MIL-53(Fe)/CQDs/2%Ag and MIL-53(Fe)/CQDs/2%Pd, respectively. More significantly, MIL-53(Fe)/CQDs/2%Au nanocomposite has been proven to serve as bifunctional photocatalyst for simultaneously removing Cr(VI)/dye mixed system pollutants. The superior photoactivity may be due to the enhanced light absorption intensity, the superior electrical conductivity of Au and CQDs, as well as surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Au. In particular, the possible photocatalytic reaction mechanism has been carefully investigated and proposed.

Photocatalytic depolymerization of lignin to produce high value-added chemicals by carbon quantum dots modified WO3 nanosheets

Zhijie Jiang,Xutang Liu,Wei Zhao,Fei Wang,Mingyu Cui,Linyang Dong,Chong Liang,Dingkai Wang,Shuiyuan Fu

Photocatalysis, a sustainable development strategy, employed to produce value-added chemicals from lignin, has attracted much attention due to its low energy consumption and mild reaction conditions. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and tungsten oxide (WO 3 ) composite photocatalysts (CQDs/WO 3 ) were prepared by ultrasonic assisted wet impregnation method in this study. The CQDs/WO 3 nanosheets exhibit good optical properties and satisfactory performance of lignin depolymerization. Characterization results embody that the addition of CQDs significantly changes the morphology of WO 3 . Compared with bulk pure WO 3 , CQDs/WO 3 becomes a nanosheet structure in the size of ∼ 200 nm. Furthermore, CQDs can absorb photogenerated electrons as well as reduce the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. The strong oxidizing ability of n -type semiconductor WO 3 enables it to effectively break the typical bonds like C-O or C-C near polar functional groups in lignin. Due to this ingenious design, dealkaline lignin conversion was up to 34.21% as well as the highest yields of vanillin and vanillic acid in the form of lignin were 24.74 mg/g and 8.02 mg/g in 2 h at room temperature, visible light illumination and air atmosphere, respectively. And optimized CQDs/WO 3 also had satisfactory effects on three natural lignin (grass lignin, pine lignin and birch lignin), which proved its universality. Electron spin resonance experiments and mechanism investigation demonstrated that ·O 2 - and ·OH play a weighty role in photocatalytic depolymerization of lignin. This study provides a new gambit for converting lignin to high value-added chemicals (vanillin and vanillic acid) over modified WO 3 .

Waste-derived CQDs/ZnIn2S4 S-scheme heterostructures with built-in electric fields for visible-light detoxification of wastewaters containing methylene blue and Cr(VI)

Ruijie Che,Yubo Pan,Yining Zhu,Xiaojing Long,Jining Li

Visible-light purification of contaminated waters is often constrained by rapid charge recombination and strong matrix interference, especially in complex real wastewaters. Here, we upcycled rice-noodle waste into carbon quantum dots (CQDs), and integrated them with ZnIn 2 S 4 to construct three-dimensional CQDs/ZnIn 2 S 4 nanoflowers. Optimising the CQDs loading at 3 wt% enabled the composite to remove 50 mg L −1 of pollutants within 120 min under visible irradiation, achieving 99.3% Cr(VI) reduction and complete methylene blue (MB) degradation with apparent first-order rate constants of 0.0192 min −1 (Cr(VI)) and 0.0223 min −1 (MB). The photocatalyst resisted matrix inhibition, with removals reaching 93.1% (Cr(VI)) and 91.6% (MB) in wastewaters, and above 95% in tap, lake and river waters; catalytic activity was retained above 95% after five reuse cycles. Valence-band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (VB-XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) band alignment analysis, together with transient photocurrent response, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), photoluminescence (PL)and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and radical-trapping experiments collectively verified an S-scheme CQDs/ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunction with an interfacial built-in electric field that drives vectorial charge separation and preserves highly reductive electrons and oxidative holes at spatially distinct sites. This waste-to-resource strategy couples low-cost carbon precursors with interfacial band engineering to deliver a scalable, visible-light-driven platform for simultaneous detoxification of inorganic (Cr(VI)) and organic dye pollutants in realistic treatment scenarios.

A novel photoelectrochemical biosensor for the sensitive detection of dual microRNAs using molybdenum carbide nanotubes as nanocarriers and energy transfer between CQDs and AuNPs

Minghui Wang,Huanshun Yin,Yunlei Zhou,Xiangjian Meng,Geoffrey I.N. Waterhouse,Shiyun Ai

Herein, a novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor was developed for the ultrasensitive detection of dual microRNAs (miRNAs), with the detection being based on energy transfer (ET) between carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The PEC platform consisted of a [email protected] 2 C nanotube modified ITO electrode. Two hairpin probes (H1 and H2) carrying the Au NPs were used “switch off” and “switch on” the PEC signal of the CQDs, with a close approach of the tagged AuNPs to the CQDs quenching the PEC signal. The introduction of different miRNAs (miRNA-159b and miRNA-166a) altered the interparticle distance between the AuNPs and CQDs, thereby affecting the intensity of the PEC response. This approach allowed the highly sensitive detection of both miRNA-159b and miRNA-166a. The linear range of the biosensor for miRNA-159b and miRNA-166a detection were 0.5–5000 fM, with low detection limits of 0.15 fM and 0.21 fM, respectively. To our knowledge, this is the first reported CQDs-based ET biosensor for the PEC detection of dual miRNAs. Results suggest that this approach offers a promising platform for the ultrasensitive detection of multiple miRNAs.

Elimination of defect and strain by functionalized CQDs dual-engineering for all-inorganic HTMs-free perovskite solar cells with an ultrahigh voltage of 1.651 V

Jingwei Zhu,Benlin He,Mengxin Wang,Xinpeng Yao,Hao Huang,Cong Chen,Haiyan Chen,Yanyan Duan,Qunwei Tang

The high-quality perovskite film with reduced defect states and released lattice strain is crucial to the performance development of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, carbon quantum dots with bromine functional groups (Br-CQDs) are firstly synthesized and creatively employed as additive and buried interface modifier to enhance perovskite film quality. Arising from the strong anchor binding of bromine and oxygen-containing groups in Br-CQDs with uncoordinated Pb 2+ and Cs + ions within perovskite and the insertion of Br-CQDs into perovskite lattice, the incorporation of Br-CQDs exerting the role of an “adhesive” can not only effectively retard nucleation and growth processes, heal defect states and release lattice strain of perovskite film, but also regulate interfaces energy level. As a result, the charge recombination and energy loss inside PSCs are evidently suppressed thanks to the resultant high-quality perovskite film and more matching interfaces energy level. Finally, the hole-free PSC achieves an exciting PCE up to 10.79% with an ultrahigh V OC of 1.651 V, which is to date the highest efficiency and V OC for the mesoporous all-inorganic CsPbBr 3 PSCs without hole transport materials. Furthermore, the optimized PSCs display a superior long-term stability under air conditions with 85% RH at 85 °C and continuous illumination.

Accelerated photocatalytic degradation of diclofenac by a novel CQDs/BiOCOOH hybrid material under visible-light irradiation: Dechloridation, detoxicity, and a new superoxide radical model study

Ping Chen,Qianxin Zhang,Yuehan Su,Lingzhi Shen,Fengliang Wang,Haijin Liu,Yang Liu,Zongwei Cai,Wenying Lv,Guoguang Liu

A visible light-driven and environmentally compatible photocatalyst is considered to be a potential application for wastewater treatment processes. In the present study, we employed carbon quantum dots (CQDs) to modify BiOCOOH with the aim of negating the UV limit of the photocatalyst, while increasing its photocatalytic activity. The structure, morphologies, and other characteristics of CQDs/BiOCOOH composites were investigated, which confirmed that CQDs were successfully coupled with BiOCOOH. Under visible light irradiation, a very low CQDs content of 2.0% weight resulted in a 4.64-fold more rapid reaction rate in the photodegradation of diclofenac (DCF) than pristine BiOCOOH. The CQDs served to enhance the visible light absorption of BiOCOOH, which significantly improved visible-light harvesting, as well as interfacial charge transfer and separation. Through a new model study it was revealed that O 2 − was predominantly responsible for DCF degradation. Based on mass spectrometry and theoretical calculations, primary intermediates were identified, and the key pathways proceeded mainly through e − reduction, O 2 − attack, and OH addition reactions. The Vibrio fischeri , Desmodesmus subspicatus , and Daphnia magna were selected to evaluate the acute toxicity, which initially increased and further decreased when the total organic carbon and organic chlorine compounds were reduced. The excellent dechloridation, mineralization, and detoxicity properties via the synthetic CQDs/BiOCOOH photocatalysts clearly demonstrated the potential of this strategy.

Controllable synthesis of a sponge-like Z-scheme N,S-CQDs/Bi2MoO6@TiO2 film with enhanced photocatalytic and antimicrobial activity under visible/NIR light irradiation

Yanning Qu,Xinyang Li,Hengli Zhang,Renliang Huang,Wei Qi,Rongxin Su,Zhimin He

Multifunctional photocatalytic surfaces for pollutant degradation and antimicrobial application are often in high demand, however they confront many challenges in charge transfer and light capture ability. In this work, a sponge-like N,S-CQDs/Bi 2 MoO 6 @TiO 2 film was constructed via hydrothermal technique aiming to solve above problems. As a result, the ternary film showed enhanced photocatalytic efficiency under visible and near-infrared (NIR) light, in which 85.8% and 44.6% of ciprofloxacin (CIP) were degraded after 240 min irradiation with visible and NIR light, respectively. Moreover, the composite film effectively realized photocatalytic sterilization of gram-positive B. subtilis and gram-negative E. coli under visible light irradiation. The bacterial colony decreased significantly from 7.56-log to 1-log cfu/mL after adding the ternary film within 1.5 h. The enhanced photocatalytic efficiency was closely related to both introduction of surface-functional N,S-CQDs and the construction of N,S-CQDs/Bi 2 MoO 6 @TiO 2 Z-scheme system, in which the transfer efficiency of photoinduced carriers and the light absorption property were significantly improved. We consider that the N,S-CQDs/Bi 2 MoO 6 @TiO 2 film is promising for the degradation of refractory pollutants and antimicrobial application under visible/NIR light irradiation. The relatively convenient recycling property and excellent photocatalytic performance of the N,S-CQDs/Bi 2 MoO 6 @TiO 2 film are beneficial for industrial applications.

Nontoxic Carbon Quantum Dots/g-C3N4 for Efficient Photocatalytic Inactivation of Staphylococcus aureus under Visible Light

Chenyi Tang,Chao Liu,Yu Han,Qiaoqi Guo,Wei Ouyang,Huajun Feng,Meizhen Wang,Feng Xu

The widespread use of antibiotics has caused the rapid emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains and antibiotic resistance genes in the past few decades. Photocatalytic inactivation, a promising approach for the killing of pathogens, efficiently avoids the problems induced by antimicrobial drugs. However, traditional photocatalysts usually have some disadvantages, such as high costs of raw materials, ultraviolet ray excitation, and potential leaching of toxic metals. Here, a metal-free heterojunction photocatalyst, denoted as CQDs/g-C 3 N 4 , is synthesized through incorporating carbon quantum dots (CQDs) on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ), which significantly enhances photocatalytic inactivation of Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) compared with pure g-C 3 N 4 in vitro. CQDs/g-C 3 N 4 causes a rapid increase of intracellular reactive oxygen species levels and destruction of cell membranes under visible light, eventually leading to death of bacteria. The efficacy of CQDs/g-C 3 N 4 is further examined by a mouse cutaneous infection model of S. aureus . CQDs/g-C 3 N 4 markedly reduces the bacterial loads and prompts lesion recovery in mice, as compared with g-C 3 N 4 -treated group. In vivo and in vitro toxicity analyses show that the side effects of CQDs/g-C 3 N 4 are negligible. Considering the efficient photocatalytic inactivation and nontoxicity of CQDs/g-C 3 N 4 , this visible-light-driven photocatalyst paves a brand new avenue for the treatment of S. aureus infection.

Epimedium brevicornu maxim. -derived green carbon quantum dots as chemiluminescence probes for highly sensitive detection of Sulfacetamide and Sulfadimethoxine Sodium Salt

Yue Zhao,Yujie Xiao,Xian Yang,Xue Zhang

This study presented the synthesis of phosphorus (P) and chlorine (Cl) co-doped carbon quantum dots (P/Cl-CQDs) derived from Epimedium brevicornu Maxim. and established a simple and effective chemiluminescence (CL) system for detecting Sulfacetamide (STM) and Sulfadimethoxine Sodium Salt (STX). Employing traditional Chinese medicine Epimedium brevicornu Maxim. as a green precursor material, (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 and NH 4 Cl were utilized as dopants for P and Cl, respectively. The P/Cl-CQDs was synthesized through a one-step hydrothermal method exhibited excellent CL properties, effectively catalyzing the luminol system and markedly amplifying its CL intensity. Both STM and STX were observed to inhibit the CL intensity of the luminol-(P/Cl-CQDs) system. Based on this, a novel CL method combining flow injection technique was established for the detection of STM and STX. Under optimal conditions, the method demonstrated the capability to detect STM in the range of 1–400 × 10 −6 mol/L, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.34 × 10 −6 mol/L and a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 1.29 %, and STX within the range of 5–280 × 10 −6 mol/L, with a LOD of 0.16 × 10 −6 mol/L and an RSD of 1.23 %. This method successfully determined the content of STM and STX in pork, with spike recoveries ranging from 100.0 % to 103.8 % for STM and from 98.0 % to 102.3 % for STX.

Synergistic Effect Between 0D CQDs and 2D MXene to Enhance the Photothermal Conversion of Hydrogel Evaporators for Efficient Solar Water Evaporation, Photothermal Sensing and Electricity Generation

Xinyu Jing,Lizhi Chen,Yancai Li,Hongyan Yin,Jiaying Chen,Mengyao Su,Fangfei Liu,Tursun Abdiryim,Feng Xu,Jiangan You,Xiong Liu

Solar-powered interfacial water evaporation is a promising technique for alleviating freshwater stress. However, the evaporation performance of solar evaporators is still constrained by low photothermal conversion efficiency and high water evaporation enthalpy. Herein, 0D carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are combined with 2D MXene to serve as a hybrid photothermal material to enhance the light absorption and photothermal conversion ability, meanwhile sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogels are used as a substrate material for water transport to reduce the enthalpy of water evaporation. The synergistic effect in 0D CQDs/2D MXene hybrid photothermal materials accelerate the carrier transfer, inducing efficient localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. This results in the enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency. The integrated hydrogel evaporators demonstrate a high evaporation rate (1.93 and 2.86 kg m −2 h −1 under 1 and 2 sunlights, respectively) and low evaporation enthalpy (1485 J g −1 ). In addition, the hydrogel evaporators are applied for photothermal sensing and temperature difference power generation (TEG). The TEG device presents an efficient output power density (230.7 mW m −2 ) under 1 sunlight. This work provides a feasible approach for regulating and controlling the evaporation performances of hydrogel evaporators, and gives a proof-of-concept for the design of multipurpose solar evaporation systems.

Photocatalytic fuel cell with N-CQDs electron warehouses mediated ZnIn2S4/tubular g-C3N4/Ti 2D/0D/2D photoanode for efficient organic pollutant degradation and electricity generation

Zhuofan Han,Dengjie Zhong,Yunlan Xu,Haixing Chang,Lin Dong,Yi Liu

In this study, N-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs)/ZnIn 2 S 4 /tubular g-C 3 N 4 (TCN)/Ti photoanode was successfully prepared by a simple one-pot solvothermal method and silica sol drop coating method, which was assembled with Cu x O/Cu cathode to construct photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) to degrade organic pollutants and generate electricity. The photoanode material aims to promote the separation and uniform transfer of photogenerated electron through the synergistic effect of Schottky junction and S-type heterojunction of 0D quantum dots. The PFC with N-CQDs-doped photoanode possessed strong power generation capacity (71.10·μW-cm −2 ) and high photoelectric conversion efficiency (0.098 %), which were 1.72 and 1.94 times that of the PFC with ZnIn 2 S 4 /tubular g-C 3 N 4 /Ti photoanode. It degraded more than 95 % of rhodamine B, 83.44 % of tetracycline and 50.66 % of bisphenol A within 30 min. The excellent performance of the developed PFC is attributed to the synergistic effect of different heterojunction in photoanode, and the improvement of absorption and utilization of visible light by doping N-CQDs. Both free radicals (•OH, •O 2 − ) and non-free radicals (h + , 1 O 2 ) were involved in the degradation process of pollutants. It is noteworthy that, due to the Schottky junction, the N-CQDs could act as electron warehouses to promote the production of H 2 O 2 , which could enhance the degradation effect. We believe that this research provides a new direction for the development and research work on efficient photoanodes. Synopsis N-CQDs was introduced into PFC photoanode to construct the synergistic effect of Schottky junction and S heterojunction to simultaneously realize efficient pollutants degradation and power generation.
