Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is a widely used inorganic filling pigment used in coatings, and it is known for its nontoxicity, odorlessness, and environmental friendliness. The application of CaCO3as a filler can effectively reduce raw material costs, and optimization of the filler formula enhances the coating film performance. In this study, oak planks were prepared as substrates for water-based inkjet printing. Three composite water-based primers with different TiO2-to-CaCO3ratios and a polyurethane resin primer were used to prepare the substrate for the printing surface. The properties of the water-based primer coating and the water-based inkjet printing coating were characterized and analyzed via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, video-based contact angle analysis, and environmental scanning electron microscopy. The aim was to investigate the effects of the composite waterborne primer coatings on the ink absorption and coloring properties of the interface between wood substrates and waterborne inkjet coatings. Sample WDCC-3#, with a TiO2-to-CaCO3ratio of 15:35, exhibited the most comprehensive characteristics. The wood surface coated with 15 g/m2of the polyurethane resin primer and 15 g/m2of WDCC-3#exhibited a 5.8° contact angle of the water-based ink, first-grade adhesion, 4 H hardness, 70.52 whiteness value, and a roughness of ~2.33. The surface of the printed water-based inkjet-coated substrate was uniform and smooth, featuring rounded and transparent edges of the water-based ink droplets and a small CMYK color difference value. Therefore, the composite waterborne primer, incorporating TiO2and CaCO3in specific ratios, can be effectively combined with waterborne polyurethane primer coatings. This combination significantly improves the interfacial compatibility between the oak surface and waterborne inkjet coatings, leading to enhanced ink absorption on the oak plank surface during printing. This results in a high degree of color reproduction and clearer printed images. Overall, this study provides valuable insights for the development of primer programs for the industrial application of waterborne digital inkjet technology on wood products. Keywords:waterborne primer;calcium carbonate;water-based ink;oak plank;inkjet printing technology

Summary Incorporating graphite/graphene into a Mg alloy matrix is a promising approach for developing lightweight heat dissipation materials. However, carbon material is inherently incompatible with Mg because of their distinctly different surface characteristics, resulting in the challenge of composite fabricating and interface controlling. Herein, a new strategy of in situ interfacial modification was proposed to achieve excellent thermal conductivity and mechanical properties in graphite/Mg composites. A super-nano CaCO 3 interfacial layer was reported in this paper. The detailed interfacial structure, reaction thermodynamics and kinetics, and interface strengthening mechanisms were analyzed and discussed. Several preferential epitaxial relationships of the Mg/CaCO 3 interface were revealed, which are conducive to minimize the interfacial energy, stabilize and strengthen the interface. Moreover, strong ionic bond of graphite/CaCO 3 interface was demonstrated. The strong chemical interface bonding of graphite-Mg via in situ interface modification facilitates both the interfacial cohesion and interfacial thermal conduction, which endows the graphite/Mg composites with superior strength–thermal conductivity synergy.

A superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic CaCO 3 @PDA@nylon nanocomposite membrane was prepared by a simple dip-coating method using a nylon 66 membrane in dopamine and nano CaCO 3 particle aqueous solutions. The prepared CaCO 3 @PDA@nylon membrane was characterized by SEM, EDS , FTIR, and XPS . The underwater oil contact angle reached 159.7°. The modified membrane showed highly efficient oil-in-water emulsion separation performance for various viscous oils or organic solvents over a wide range from 126.8 to 6029.6 nm. Furthermore, the CaCO 3 @PDA@nylon membrane also demonstrated high permeation flux and good regeneration ability. Even with continuous reuse of 15 cycles, the flux was still high, e.g., 517.3 L m −2 h −1 for chloroform-in-water emulsions with an average particle size of 126.8 nm. The modified membrane's possible oil-in-water emulsion separation mechanism was obtained by combining fluorescence-assisted dripping, continuous filtration, and emulsion contact angle experiments. This work might provide a simple and environmentally friendly membrane modification method for general separation studies of high oil concentration oil-in-water emulsions. The simple preparation process and efficient and fast separation ability highlight its great potential in large-scale production and oily wastewater treatment .

CaCO3 nanoparticles are very suitable as intelligent carriers because of their ideal biocompatibility and biodegradability, especially their sensitivity to pH. In this paper, we use mesoporous CaCO3 nanoparticles as intelligent carrier, sodium alginate, and chitosan as alternating assembly materials, folic acid as target molecules, and exploit layer-by-layer assembly technology to achieve sensitive molecular targeting and pH response drug release. Mesoporous CaCO3 hybrid nanoparticles have high drug loading on doxorubicin. The effects of different pH values on drug release in vitro were studied by regulating simulated body fluids with different pH values. The cytotoxicity, targeting effect, and drug release of human cervical cancer cell line (HeLa) were studied by cell vitality and imaging experiments. All the evidence suggests that the smart mesoporous CaCO3 nanoparticles may be a potential clinical application platform for cancer therapy.

A novel monodispersed CaCO 3 @hydroxyapatite/magnetite microsphere (CaCO 3 @HAP/Fe 3 O 4 ) was prepared via an in-situ growth strategy, and applied as an adsorbent for efficient and selective adsorption of benzoylurea insecticides (BUs) in various tea beverages samples. The sorbent exhibited uniformity in particle size, good mono-dispersibility and excellent solvent stability. The adsorption equilibrium of BUs (100 ng/mL) in 10 mL of tea beverages samples was achieved on 20 mg of CaCO 3 @HAP/Fe 3 O 4 within 10 min. The adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir models and the maximum adsorption capacities of 131.9–161.3 mg/g were accomplished via hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and the affinity of F atom and Ca 2+ . Coupled with high performance liquid chromatography , the method offered wide linear ranges of 0.8–1000 ng/mL with correlation coefficients ( r ) ≥ 0.9995, low limits of detection of 0.2–0.3 ng/mL and large enrichment factors of 75.7–102. The recoveries ranged from 75.7%− 102% with intra- and inter-day precisions of 1.9%− 9.3% and 1.6%− 11.8%, respectively. In addition, CaCO 3 @HAP/Fe 3 O 4 could be easily regenerated and reused at least 10 times with no significant loss of recovery. These results revealed an alternative strategy for fast and convenient determination of BUs in tea beverages samples and proved the great feasibility of CaCO 3 @HAP/Fe 3 O 4 in the application for the selective adsorption of BUs.

Calcium-loop (CaL) heat storage technology is a potential backup energy option for concentrated solar power plants. During repeated cycles, calcium-based materials face sintering and agglomeration, leading to a rapid decline in heat storage capacity. The most widely studied closed CO 2 Brayton cycle requires calcium-based materials to undergo repeated cycles in a carbon-dioxide-rich atmosphere, but such work has been limited in the past. In this study, we synthesized various millimeter-sized calcium-based heat carrier pellets using a novel forming method and evaluated their heat storage performance. Using a simultaneous thermal analyzer (TGA/DSC), we evaluated the materials' heat storage performance and investigated the effects of different particle-size alumina on the pore structure of calcium-based pellets through X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, N 2 physical adsorption, and reaction kinetics. The study found that calcium-based pellets with large-particle-size alumina formed a web-like pore structure during cycling, exhibiting better structural stability. In contrast, those with small-particle-size better maintained their initial pore structure. Alumina-added calcium-based pellets had more abundant pores, with the large-particle-size alumina group having a specific surface area 3.5 times that of pure calcium oxide pellets. Additionally, the accumulative heat storage density of calcium-based pellets with small-particle-size alumina after 20 cycles was about 1.72 times that of pure calcium oxide pellets. It was worth noting that we found that shortening the carbonation time within the scope of this research could slow down the degradation of the exothermic performance of calcium based pellets.

The application of chitosan-based materials for the separation of uranium from wastewater was limited due to the lack of active sites. In this work, a chitosan-based composite (CaCO3@aCS/PA) was effectively created by modifying chitosan with CaCO3 and phytic acid to enhance the adsorption performance of chitosan materials. CaCO3@aCS/PA showed no significant changes and no Ca2+ was detected in the solution after stirring for 10 h in a solution with pH > 3, indicating good stability of CaCO3@aCS/PA, which was beneficial for use in adsorption. Moreover, the adsorption capacity and adsorption percentage of CaCO3@aCS/PA for uranium reached 842.0 mg/g (298 K, pH = 4) and 95.4% (C0 = 10 mg/L, pH = 4) and the adsorption equilibrium time was significantly shortened, indicating that the modification with CaCO3 and phytic acid enhanced the adsorption ability of chitosan for uranium, which was related to the synergistic effect of various active sites (CO32–, PO43–, −OH, and –NH2) on CaCO3@aCS/PA for uranium adsorption.

Emulsified asphalt cold recycled mixture (CRM) materials benefit from energy savings, environmental friendliness, and economic convenience. The in-service performance of CRM relies largely on the micro-interaction at the interface between the alkaline aggregate and cationic emulsified asphalt but lacks an in-depth interpretation at the molecular level. This study investigated the influence of the alkyl chain length of cationic emulsifiers (C 12 TAC, C 14 TAC, C 16 TAC, and C 18 TAC) on the demulsification process of cationic emulsified asphalt on a CaCO 3 surface via a microscopic molecular dynamics (MD) simulation framework combined with macroscopic demulsification experiments. The emulsification asphalt/CaCO 3 system was established by molecular-level MD simulations. The visualized statistical data were used to investigate the influence of alkyl chain length on the adsorption behavior , concentration distribution ( C A ), diffusion coefficient ( D A ), and adhesion work ( W ) of emulsified asphalt on the CaCO 3 surface. The conductivity experiment tested the demulsification time of emulsified asphalt on the CaCO 3 surface, which revealed the effect of alkyl chain length on the demulsification speed at the macro level and further verified the simulation results. Research results revealed the following conclusions: (1) The electrostatic force is the main factor driving asphalt molecules to the surface of alkaline aggregate (CaCO 3 ), while the van der Waals force leads to the reversal of repulsive forces. Therefore, the electrostatic potential distribution dominates the adhesion strength between the emulsified asphalt and the alkaline aggregate. (2) The relative concentration peak and diffusion coefficient of cationic emulsified asphalt are positively related to the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain. (3) The electrostatic force and adhesion work increase by 6.8 % when two carbon atoms are added to the alkyl chain of the emulsifier. This proves that the carbon atom content of the alkyl chain determines the adhesion of cationic emulsified asphalt. (4) The demulsification time is proportional to the number of carbon atoms in the range of 12–18. This demonstrates that enhancing the adhesion strength of emulsified asphalt and controlling the demulsification time can be achieved by adjusting the alkyl chain carbon atom content.

Chameleons can rapidly modify their coloration by manipulating the arrangement of iridophores encompassing guanine crystals in their dermis, which enables incident light to undergo birefringence. Various biomaterials have been designed to mimic the arrangement of guanine crystals, yet instances of synthesizing bottom-up structures with anisotropy for optical functionality remain rare. In this study, we report a novel two-step gas diffusion method for in-situ synthesis of CaCO 3 (Vaterite) within a hydrogel to fabricate a bio-photonic film displaying birefringence interference colors. This strategy enables the successful fabrication of an inorganic–organic photonic film with superior mechanical properties and flexibility, resulting in high transparency, superior toughness, and adjustable optical anisotropy. Through a combination of experiment and simulation results, we elucidated the critical role played by shape factor (distribution) and structural factor (particle size) in producing transmitted interference colors. Finally, the birefringent photonic films prepared using the dot-plate method can function as optical patterns accurately representing the “on”/“off” state within a binary system. This system offers high spatial resolution, excellent repeatability, and precise controllability of optical properties, making it applicable in fields such as information encryption and decrytion. Our study has successfully synthesized photonic material with anisotropic structure though in-situ method while elucidating the underlying mechanism governing their ability to generate transmission interference colors, thus opening up new avenues for transparent flexible polarized optics, imperceptible wearable devices, and advanced information encryption.

Tumor hypoxia limits radiotherapy and chemotherapy efficacy by promoting treatment resistance, while hypoxia-activated prodrugs (HAPs) like Tirapazamine (TPZ) face clinical failure due to insufficient tumor hypoxia. To address this challenge, we engineered HRP-catalyzed Mn(II) chelate-doped TPZ@CaCO₃/PDA-Mn@PEG nanoparticles (TCPPM NPs) that actively amplify hypoxia for potent TPZ activation. The hollow CaCO₃ core enables pH-responsive TPZ release (80% at pH 5.5), while the Mn-DopaCDTA-doped PDA shell provides enhanced T1-weighted MRI contrast ( r ₁ = 17.6 mM⁻¹s⁻¹, per Mn, 25 °C, 0.5 T), photoacoustic/ultrasound imaging, and synergistic PTT/PDT via ROS generation (4.0-fold increase, 1% O₂ conditions). In 4T1 tumor models, TCPPM NPs achieved 85% tumor reduction (vs. 45% for TPZ alone) and 45-day survival, overcoming HAP limitations through hypoxia amplification (PDA ROS O₂ consumption + 61.3 °C PTT) and calcium-mediated mitochondrial damage. This HAP-specific theranostic platform integrates precise imaging-guided therapy, presenting a breakthrough for hypoxia-targeted cancer treatment.

Calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) nanoparticles were used as sacrificial additives to fabricate PSf substrate membranes and based on which thin film composite (TFC) membranes were prepared using m-Phenylenediamine (MPD) and 1, 3, 5-trimesoylchloride (TMC) as the monomers . Then CaCO 3 nanoparticles dispersed in PSf matrix were effectively etched with hydrochloric acid to increase the substrate porosity. The effect of CaCO 3 loading (ranging from 0 to 10.0 wt%) was systematically investigated. The results showed that the substrate membranes fabricated with CaCO 3 incorporation exhibited higher porosity and smaller structural parameter, which is advantageous for improving water permeability and reducing mass transfer resistance. As for forward osmosis (FO) performance, the TFC membranes fabricated using modified substrates exhibited much higher water flux than the control TFC membrane prepared by substrate without CaCO 3 incorporation in both AL-FS and AL-DS mode when using DI water as the feed and 2 M NaCl as draw solution. The optimized TFC21 membrane also had better performance than other commercial TFC membranes in simulated seawater desalination . Moreover, the reduced membrane structural parameter indicated that the internal concentration polarization (ICP) could be mitigated via the etching method. This study provides a low cost and feasible way to reduce the ICP in FO membranes .

Metal oxide loaded carbon-based materials have attracted extensive attention as promising desulfurizers to solve the problem of H 2 S emission at room temperature . However, low desulfurization capacity, difficult regeneration and high economic cost are the main problems of metal oxide loaded carbon-based desulfurizers, which limit their industrial application. Herein, a novel and low-cost CaCO 3 -ZnO loaded biochar (RCZ) was synthesized by one-step pyrolysis of scrap rice and metal salts for highly efficient H 2 S removal at room-temperature. The optimized RCZ-1-1-1-800 sample showed an excellent H 2 S removal ability of 834.48 mg/g at the reaction temperature of 25 °C, oxygen content of 10%, and relative humidity of 70% as compared to 29.31 mg/g achieved by the inactivated biochar (prepared without activator). Such an RCZ-1-1-1-800 desulfurizer also delivered a high H 2 S removal ability under different desulfurization conditions. The associated desulfurization mechanism of RCZ was the coupling of reactive adsorption and catalytic oxidation with sulfur being the main desulfurization product. Moreover, the as-fabricated RCZ also exhibited a high reusability , retaining about 95% of the initial H 2 S removal capacity after five adsorption/regeneration cycles. This work provides a promising idea for the preparation of low-cost and high-capacity metal oxide- and carbonate-loaded carbon-based desulfurizers.
