Bacteria–phyllosilicate complexes are commonly found in natural environments and are capable of immobilizing trace metals. However, the molecular binding mechanisms of heavy metals to these complex aggregates still remain poorly understood. This study investigated Cd adsorption on Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis , Gram-negative Pseudomonas putida and their binary mixtures with montmorillonite using surface complexation model, Cd K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). We have shown that larger amounts of Cd are adsorbed by B. subtilis than by P. putida at pH<∼6, and Cd sorption that binding to phosphate groups plays a more important role in P. putida than in B. subtilis . This remind us that we should consider the microbe species when predict the biochemical behavior of trace metals in microbe-bearing environments. The observed Cd adsorption on the binary bacteria–clay composites was more than that predicted based on the component additivity approach. When taking bacteria–clay (1:1 mass ratio) as a representative example, an approximately 68%:32% metal distribution between the bacterial and mineral fraction was found. Both the EXAFS and ITC fits showed that the binding stoichiometry for Cd-carboxyl/phosphate was smaller in the binary mixtures than that in pure bacteria. We proposed that the significant deviations were possibly due to the physical-chemical interaction between the composite fractions that might reduce the agglomeration of the clay grains, increase the negative surface charges, and provide additional bridging of metals ions between bacterial cells and clays.

The coexistence of oxyanion-type and cationic heavy metals in complex aqueous systems poses a significant challenge for adsorption-based remediation. Herein, mesoporous silica-supported manganese‑lanthanum mixed oxides (Mn x La 1-x @MCM-41) were synthesized via an oxidation-coprecipitation strategy. The mesoporous silica framework effectively confined amorphous Mn/La oxides, suppressing oxide aggregation and manganese leaching. The as-prepared Mn x La 1-x @MCM-41 materials exhibited efficient removal of heavy metals, with maximum adsorption capacities of 57.3 mg g −1 for As(V), 141.6 mg g −1 for Cd(II), and 333.0 mg g −1 for Pb(II). By adjusting the Mn/La molar ratio, the adsorption behavior toward different metal species could be systematically regulated, with La-enriched compositions favoring As(V) uptake and Mn-rich materials exhibiting enhanced affinity toward Cd(II) and Pb(II). High removal efficiencies for all three heavy metals were maintained under multicomponent coexisting conditions. The composition-dependent adsorption behavior reflects a functional differentiation of Mn- and La-associated surface sites, enabling the simultaneous immobilization of oxyanion and cationic contaminants. Overall, this work demonstrates that integrating mesoporous confinement with compositional regulation provides an effective strategy for constructing stable and multifunctional adsorbents for multicomponent heavy-metal remediation.

Given the environmental and potential health hazards associated with uranyl ion (UO 2 2+ ), developing fast, cost-effective, and sensitive detection methods is of significant importance. In this study, we report a novel fluorescent sensor for the selective detection of UO 2 2+ based on a cadmium-post-modified hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF), H 4 -CDI-Cd. The post-synthetic metal modification enhances the π-conjugation of the framework, reduces its energy gap, and creates specific binding sites for UO 2 2+ . The probe exhibits a fast, selective response toward UO 2 2+ via a photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism, achieving a low detection limit of 19.54 nM and a linear range from 75 nM to 1 μM. DFT calculations reveal that Cd 2+ coordination redistributes charge, which not only lowers the electrostatic repulsion for UO 2 2+ migration into the channels but also provides low-energy vacant orbitals (5s/5p) for secondary coordination with UO 2 2+ , thereby enhancing selective binding. The method was successfully applied to determine UO 2 2+ in real water samples (lake water and mining wastewater), with quantitative spike recoveries between 99.61% and 102.61%. This work demonstrates a feasible post-modification strategy to engineer responsive HOFs for the selective detection of UO 2 2+ in the environmental water.

Soil minerals are important natural adsorbents that regulate heavy metal fate; yet, the influence of natural drying on their adsorption behavior remains poorly understood. This study compared how drying affects Cd(II) and Zn(II) retention and selectivity on two widespread soil minerals, ferrihydrite (Fhy) and kaolinite (Kln), using single/binary adsorption experiments. Results indicated that drying significantly enhanced Cd(II) and Zn(II) retention on Fhy by promoting inner-sphere complexation and enhancing the stability of metal-mineral bonds, as evidenced by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy analyses. In contrast, the effect on Kln was less pronounced, with Cd(II) and Zn(II) predominantly adsorbed via electrostatic interactions and drying having a minimal impact. Crucially, drying induced contrasting selectivity changes: it enhanced the selective adsorption of Zn(II) on Kln while favoring Cd(II) selectivity on Fhy. Density functional theory (DFT) computations corroborated this finding, showing lower adsorption energies for Cd(II) than for Zn(II) on Fhy, with the reverse trend observed on Kln. This preferential adsorption of Cd(II) on Fhy and Zn(II) on Kln after drying was attributed to the drying process facilitating the formation of more stable bonds between metal ions and mineral surfaces. These findings establish a theoretical framework for predicting the fate of metals in dehydration-affected soils and contribute to a systematic understanding of the environmental functionality of soil minerals.

Cadmium (Cd(II)) is highly toxic to environmental, and while many approaches have been developed to measure cumulative Cd(II) concentration over time, online monitoring of spatiotemporal changes remains challenging. To address this, an electrochemical sensor for determination of ultra-trace Cd(II) was developed, based on gold/graphene oxide/copper oxide (Au/GO/CuO) nanomaterials modifying glassy carbon electrode. CuO nanoparticles were prepared by a green synthesis method using plant extract, and the Au nanoparticles were deposited on the GO/CuO nanosubstrates by an in situ electrochemical method. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The CuO nanoparticles are layered flower-like with an average particle size of 200–500 nm. Au/GO/CuO nanocomposites with high specific surface area and excellent electronic transmission capability enhanced the electrochemical signal of the sensor. Owing to the synergistic effect of Au/GO/CuO, the sensor exhibited good performance to Cd(II) in the ultra-wide range of 5 × 10−11–5 × 10−7 M with a detection limit of 2 × 10−11 M. The sensor was successfully quantified for determining Cd(II) with desirable recovery, displaying outstanding long-term stability, high sensitivity, and reproducibility. After validating its accuracy, this sensor was successfully used for detection of Cd(II) in water and cosmetic samples.

Cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) in seawater enter the human body through the food chain. Combined toxicity tests indicated that high concentrations of Cd(II) and low concentrations of Zn(II) had a synergistic effect on humans. Thus, there is an urgent need to prepare a sensor for rapid and simultaneous detection of Cd(II) and Zn(II) in seawater. Herein, a reduced graphene oxide/carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotube (rGO/MWCNT-COOH)-modified glassy carbon electrode was prepared in the experiments using the dropping method. The synthesis of various materials achieved the purpose of expanding the surface area, and scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the structure of the composite membrane. Moreover, the large number of functional groups on the surface of the composite membrane can also increase the adsorption of ions. For the determination of trace cadmium (II) and zinc (II) in seawater, the method used was differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The results show that the peak current, which was obtained in the range of 5–400 μg/L for Cd(II) and Zn(II), has a linear relationship with concentration, corresponding to the detection limits of 0.8 μg/L for Cd(II) and 0.98 μg/L for Zn(II). The modified electrode was used to determine the Cd(II) and Zn(II) content in the coastal seawater of the Maowei Sea, and the recovery rate was between 95.8 and 98.2% for Cd(II) and 96.7~99.4% for Zn(II), which provided a novel approach of detection to define trace Cd(II) and Zn(II) in seawater.

A new type of voltammetric sensor material has been fabricated via a facile self-assembled method. A modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by phenylsulfonic groups grafted multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT-SO3H) with dye molecules via Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) assembling (CNT-SO3H/dye-LB/GCE) were prepared for detecting trace levels of cadmium (Cd2+) ions by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry. The synergy effect between CNT-SO3H and dye as well as orderly aggregates in composite LB films contributed to greatly enhancing the determination performance. Under selected conditions, voltammetric response of the fabricated electrochemical sensor in 0.1 M acetate buffer solution containing Bi3+ ions for Cd2+ ions was linear with its concentration in the range 0.1 to 1.2 μM, with a detection limit of 0.08 μM. In addition, the preparation process of self-assembled composite film modified electrodes was simple, non-toxic, exhibiting higher sensitivity and potential application prospects in aspects of heavy metal ions detection and environmental analysis.

In this paper a photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor based on specific recognition with conformational changed after the target Cd(II) identification was fabricated. A ZnO and reduced graphene oxide (ZnO-rGO) nanocomposite with enhanced PEC activity was designed as photoactive material. After the further incorporation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with ZnO-rGO nanocomposite, the enhanced photocurrent signal could be detected owing to the localized surface plasmon resonance and good conductivity of AuNPs. In addition, AuNPs were used as anchors for immobilization of –SH modified aptamer S1. After that aptamer S2 was paired with S1 sequence to form complementary double stranded DNA (dsDNA) on the electrode surface. Methylene blue (MB) was acted as sensitizer and assembled in dsDNA structure to amplify photocurrent response. When Cd(II) was bound to the aptamer presented on the sensing interface, S2 specifically recognized and captured Cd(II), which resulted in the unwinding of dsDNA structure and the separation of MB molecules from the electrode surface with photocurrent response decreased. The photocurrent was detected by a double-working-electrode system, which used the modified electrode as the first working electrode and glassy carbon electrode (GCE) as the second working electrode. Dopamine (DA) was added to the electrolyte and acted as the electron donor , which could be oxidized on the modified electrode and reduced on the GCE to form a cyclic reaction, leading to the enhanced photocurrent response with improved photocurrent stability. This MB sensitized PEC aptasensor exhibited a high sensitivity with a detection limit of 1.8 × 10 −12 mol/L (3σ). Thus, a highly sensitive aptasensor with double-working-electrode detection method for Cd(II) determination were established and further applied to the water samples analysis.

The sensitive detection and efficient removal of heavy metal ions with high toxicity and mobility are of great importance for the environmental monitoring and control. Here, a novel SnS-decorated Bi 2 O 3 nanosheets heterostructure was synthesized via a facile hydro/solvothermal strategy. The as-prepared SnS-Bi 2 O 3 nanocomposites presented impressive merits of the high surface area, mesoporous channels and fast electron transfer for the electrochemical reactions . And the synergistic interaction between SnS and Bi 2 O 3 significantly improved the “deposition-stripping” process involving electron transfer, mass diffusion and phase transition. With the unique characteristics, the SnS-Bi 2 O 3 nanocomposites exhibited improved sensitivity and robust stability on the electrochemical detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II) with low LODs of 1.50 nM and 1.40 nM, respectively, and were successfully applied on the detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in tap water and lake water samples. Furthermore, the electrochemical removal performance towards Cd(II) and Pb(II) was achieved as well. These SnS-Bi 2 O 3 nanocomposites could serve as an efficient platform on the detection and removal of heavy metal ions in environmental electrochemistry .

In this work, a novel electrochemical sensor for Cd(II) detection with differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) is fabricated based on hollow ZnO@nitrogen-doped carbon (H-ZnO@NC) polyhedra, which are prepared from ZIF-8 via in situ tannic acid etching and a subsequent calcination process. The as-obtained H-ZnO@NC exhibits a polyhedral morphology with a well-defined hollow structure and a uniform distribution of elements C, N, O, and Zn in the shell. The unique structure of H-ZnO@NC can provide an enlarged surface area and abundant active sites. Moreover, ZnO has a strong affinity for heavy metals, which can enhance the adsorption capacity of H-ZnO@NC for Cd(II) in the accumulation step of stripping voltammetry, and thus improve the electrochemical sensing performances. As expected, the H-ZnO@NC-based sensor achieves a wide linear range of 0.3–300 μg L−1, a low detection limit of 0.1 μg L−1 (S/N = 3), and exhibits good selectivity as well as high stability and reproducibility. Moreover, the proposed electrochemical sensor can be applied for the determination of Cd(II) in real water samples, obtaining satisfactory results.

In this study, the novel adsorbent PVA-TA-βCD was synthesized via thermal cross-linking between polyvinyl alcohol and β-cyclodextrin. The characterization methods SEM-EDS, FTIR, and XPS were adopted to characterize the adsorbent. The effect of pH, contact time, initial concentrations, and temperature during the adsorption of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Mn(II) onto the PVA-TA-βCD was also investigated. In a single-component system, the data fitted well to pseudo-second-order, and film diffusion and intra-particle diffusion both played important roles in the adsorption process. As for isotherm study, it showed a heterogeneous adsorption capacity of 199.11, 116.52, and 90.28 mg g −1 for the Pb(II), Cd(II), and Mn(II), respectively. Competition between the ions existed in a multi-component system; however, owing to the stronger affinity of the PVA-TA-βCD for Pb(II) relative to Cd(II) and Mn(II), the Pb(II) adsorption onto the PVA-TA-βCD was less affected by the addition of the other metals, which could be effectively explained by the hard and soft acid and base theory (HSAB). Furthermore, PVA-TA-βCD showed good reusability throughout regeneration experiments.

In this study, a crosslinked yeast/β-cyclodextrin polymer (Y–β-CDP), for use as an effective adsorbent for removal Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions from aqueous solution, has been innovatively prepared by grafting β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) onto the surface of baker's yeast (BY) and thiomalic acid as a crosslinker. Several characterization techniques, such as SEM equipped with an EDS analyzer, FTIR, XRD, and XPS were employed characterize the Y–β-CDP. The impact of various operating parameters, such as pH, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration of metal ions, contact time and solution temperature, as well as adsorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics were systematically investigated. The adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) on Y–β-CDP reached equilibrium in 25 min, and the kinetic process conforms to the pseudo-second order model. The Langmuir model was used to describe the adsorption isotherm data better than the Freundlich model. The predicted maximum adsorption capacity at 25 °C for Pb(II) and Cd(II) was 150.08 and 102.80 mg g−1, respectively, when the initial concentration of metal ions was 120 mg L−1. The thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption procedure of Pb(II) and Cd(II) onto Y–β-CDP was spontaneous and endothermic. Furthermore, regeneration experiments demonstrated that Y–β-CDP had excellent recyclability. Together, all results suggested that Y–β-CDP could potentially be a promising adsorbent in the purification of water contaminated with heavy metal ions.
