Yuxin Li,Guolang Zhou,Jingzhou Yin,Feixiang Li,Qing Zou,Wen Chen,Wenjie Yan,Qiaoqi Li,Cheng Liu,Alireza Khataee,Lili Zhang

Two-dimensional catalysts, which are sensitive to visible light and have a photothermal effect, can be used to catalyse the release of H 2 from sodium borohydride (NaBH 4 ) are being actively explored in energy saving systems. In this work, oxygen vacancy enriched two-dimensional CoFe-layered double hydroxide (CoFe-LDH) derivatives (named as CoFe- x °C, x  = 200–500) have been explored for NaBH 4 hydrolysis catalyzed by photo-thermal synergy without external heat source. The CoFe-300 °C presents its initial hexagonal lamellar structure and has the highest concentration of oxygen vacancy . These unique properties guarantee its excellent photo-thermal synergistic catalytic performance, achieving hydrogen production rate of 1877.5 mmol g −1  h −1 , and maintains high efficiency after 5 cycles. This enhanced photo-thermal synergistic catalytic mechanism is the •OH (generated from h + and H 2 O) attacks BH 4 − (absorbed on O v sites) to produce H 2 , the heat from photothermal conversion accelerates the adsorption ability and attacking rate. This study opens a new strategy for the synergistic photo-thermal catalytic hydrolysis of NaBH 4 .

Constructing CoFe alloy and tailoring d-band center in trimetallic ZIF-derived porous carbon for bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis

Yanan Ma,Dingyu Zhang,Haimeng Wang,Yuxuan Liang,Yuan Zhang,Fengfeng Yan,Liang Sun,Qian Wang,Wei Li

Synthesis of multiple-site single-atom catalyst (SAC) with metal-containing nanoparticles by using zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF) for improving the bifunctional electrocatalytic performance is of great significance, yet it is also a challenge. Trimetallic ZIF-derived porous carbon nanosheets with the CoFe alloy nanoparticles enclosed in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) are fabricated by utilizing three transition metals as ZIF precursors and sodium chloride as templates via a typical two-step process, including synthesis and pyrolysis. By building CoFe alloy and tailoring d-band center ( E d ) of the Co site, the as-obtained FeCoZn@S-CN ZIF exhibits predominant kinetic activity and durability towards ORR and OER with an extremely low potential gap (Δ E ) value of 0.584    V, exceeding many other efficient counterparts. This study provides an effective approach for designing and synthesizing atomically dispersed multi-metal site catalysts with alloyed nanoparticles to achieve high-efficient bifunctional electrocatalytic performance in the application of the recharged zinc-air battery (ZAB).

Fabrication of CoFe-LDH nanosheets@CoP nanowires hierarchical heterostructure with enhanced bifunctional electrocatalytic activity for alkaline water splitting

Zhuoshu Song,Haicheng Xuan,Shasha Liu,Lingxin Meng,Jie Wang,Xiaohong Liang,Yuping Li,Zhida Han,Peide Han

Exploring high active, low cost and stable electrocatalysts to replace noble precious metals has always been the major challenge in overall water splitting applications. Herein, CoFe-layered double hydroxide/Cobalt phosphide heterostructures on nickel foam (CoFe-LDH@CoP/NF) have been synthesized by using hydrothermal, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and electrodeposition methods. The CoFe-LDH nanosheet is uniformly deposited on the surface of CoP nanowires to create the heterostructure. The formation of heterostructure increases active surface area, accelerates charge transfer velocity, optimizes the kinetics of reaction, thereby significantly improves electrocatalytic activity of the materials. The CoFe-LDH@CoP/NF attains 10 mA cm −2 with a low overpotential of 238 mV for OER and only 63 mV for HER. The catalyst provides the current density of 10 mA cm −2 throughout the overall water splitting by only requiring a low potential of 1.54 V. The CoFe-LDH@CoP/NF as an ideal electrocatalyst provides new ideas for developing efficient non-noble metal-based overall water splitting catalysts.

Turning off the “shunt channel” by coating with CoFe layered double hydroxide nanocrystals for efficient photoelectrocatalytic water splitting

Peicheng Wei,Yan Wen,Kaifeng Lin,Xin Li

Building a photoelectrochemical cell to drive water decomposition into hydrogen and oxygen is a feasible way to access clean energy, but the unideal charge transfer path between the cocatalyst and the substrate greatly limits its application. We have developed a facile route for the preparation of a very small and highly crystalline CoFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) cocatalyst on a BiVO4 electrode through a low temperature chemical bath process. Unlike the conventional successive amorphous CoFe LDH layer coatings achieved through the electrodeposition process, the tiny and crystalline CoFe nanoparticles can close the “shunt channel” between the cocatalyst and the substrate, and the recombination of photogenerated charge caused by back-reaction is inhibited. Also, the interface between crystalline CoFe nanoparticles and BiVO4 has fewer surface trapped states compared with that of amorphous CoFe LDH layers. The CoFe/BiVO4 photoanodes showed a desirable photocurrent of 4.3 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, and the maximum applied bias photon-to-current efficiency (ABPE) for the crystalline CoFe/BiVO4 photoanode was calculated to be 1.2% at 1.01 V, consistent with 1.5 times enhancement over that of amorphous CoFe/BiVO4 and nearly 4 times enhancement over that of BiVO4.

Biomass-derived hierarchically porous CoFe-LDH/CeO2hybrid with peroxidase-like activity for colorimetric sensing of H2O2 and glucose

Wenning Yang,Jia Li,Jie Yang,Yong Liu,Zhipeng Xu,Xiaofan Sun,Fudong Wang,Dickon H.L. Ng

Biomass-derived hierarchically porous CoFe-LDH (layered double hydroxides)/CeO 2 hybrid possessing an inherent peroxidase-like activity was first fabricated employing kapok as bio-template. The CeO 2 fibers not only exhibited peroxidase-like activity, but also served as a support and guided the deposition of CoFe-LDH nanosheets on their surface to form a hierarchically porous network. The resultant CoFe-LDH/CeO 2 hybrid acted as a peroxidase mimic to catalyze 3,3′,5,5′- tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) with H 2 O 2 to generate a typical blue colored product. Furthermore, CoFe-LDH/CeO 2 hybrid displayed superior peroxidase-like catalytic property compared to the pristineCeO 2 and CoFe-LDH, which was attributed to the presence of more effective active sites of unique hierarchical-porous architecture and the synergistic effect between CoFe-LDH and CeO 2 . A facile and sensitive sensing system for H 2 O 2 and glucose determination was successfully proposed, which exhibited a sensitive response to glucose ranging from 0.05–2 mM with a detection limit of 0.015 mM based on the accelerated electron transfer between TMB and H 2 O 2 with the assistance of CoFe-LDH/CeO 2 . This paper offered a feasible way or the fabrication of materials with hierarchical structure and provided a new insight into seeking novel peroxidase mimics with boosted catalytic activities.

Accelerated Carrier Kinetics in Hollow Cubic Mott–Schottky CoFe@carbon Composites for High-Efficiency Broadband Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Jin Liang,Jiawen Sun,Yinjun Li,Dong Zhou,Siying Zhu,Pei Liu,Zhaofan He,Huimin Liu,Jie Kong

The ever-growing electromagnetic pollution from modern technology calls for high-performance wave-absorbing materials that master the delicate balance between impedance matching and attenuation capability—a balance missed by conventional heterojunctions due to their sluggish carrier kinetics and performance trade-offs. Herein, we propose a multi-scale design strategy integrating Mott–Schottky heterojunctions within a hollow cubic CoFe@carbon architecture. Work function disparity between Co 0.7 Fe 0.3 and carbon drives the formation of a built-in electric field, accelerating charge relaxation and enabling significant spatial charge migration. The directional movement of these charges under high-frequency electromagnetic fields effectively attenuates incident energy—critical for broadening the absorption bandwidth—while the hollow cubic morphology optimally tunes the impedance matching, essential for achieving a wide effective absorption band. This synergy between interfacial electric fields and structural features successfully breaks the conventional attenuation-matching compromise. Consequently, the optimized material achieves a remarkable ultra-wide EAB of 7.76 GHz at 2.5 mm and RL min of −43.22 dB. Theoretical calculations confirm that the remarkable electromagnetic wave absorption performance originates from a synergistic effect, revealing the critical roles of enhanced interface polarization driven by the Mott–Schottky effect, well-optimized conductive networks, and excellent impedance matching endowed by the unique hollow cubic structure. This strategy offers profound insights into addressing the fundamental limitations of traditional absorbers and paves a promising way for developing next-generation high-performance EM functional materials.

Fe3+ induced CoFe@hollow carbon nanocage morphology engineering modulation for tunable microwave absorption based on the Kirkendall effect

Yiming Guo,Jun Sun,Yongxing Lin,Xiangyang Li,Gang Liu,Yi Gong,Xian Zhang,Xingyou Tian,Xiaoxiao Li,Lin Chen

The precise modulation of morphology engineering utilizing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) presents a promising avenue for the development of optimal microwave absorbers. Nonetheless, challenges emerge due to the tendency of MOF derivatives to either collapse or exist in isolation, which can impede the dissipation of electromagnetic waves (EMWs) and diminish their efficacy as microwave absorbers. Herein, this work proposes a pragmatic strategy for modulating the dielectric properties of MOF derivatives through the incorporation of Fe. By introducing Fe 3+ into the ZIF-67-on-ZIF-8 precursor, and leveraging the Kirkendall effect, a CoFe@hollow carbon nanocage (HCN) structure with a large opening is synthesized post-pyrolysis. This structure effectively addresses the issues related to the contact between MOF derivatives and their inadequate conductivity, resulting in remarkable microwave absorption (MA) performance at a low paraffin filling ratio of 15 wt%. The amount of Fe doping allows for flexible control over the dielectric properties, which are influenced by morphological evolution and the extent of graphitization, leading to tunable MA characteristics. Consequently, exceptional MA performance is achieved, characterized by both broad bandwidth absorption (6.3 GHz) and high-efficiency loss (-60.09 dB). This research elucidates an intrinsic mechanism linking microtopology to MA properties, offering significant insights that are anticipated to guide the future development of dielectric MA materials through morphology engineering methodologies.

Engineering Metal-to-Metal Charge Transfer in Bimetallic CoFe-MOF-74 for Efficient Solar-Driven Photocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation

Sun Qiufan,Zhu Yuxiang,Zhang Yuanzheng,Ren Hanjie,Chen Yiyang,Zhong Xiang,Xu Sai,Cui Entian,Liang Yuhang,Yao Jianfeng

Bimetallic engineering in metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) offers a powerful strategy to enhance photocatalytic nitrogen fixation by optimizing electronic structure and facilitating directional charge transfer. This work reports a rational design of CoM-MOF-74 (M = Fe, Cd, Mg) catalysts synthesized via a solvothermal method. Among them, CoFe 0.25 -MOF-74 (Co:Fe = 4:1) microrods deliver the best performance, achieving an ammonia production rate of 120 μmol g cat −1 h −1 with an apparent quantum efficiency of 1.63% at 420 nm. The catalyst sustains high activity under outdoor sunlight and remains effective in multiple water environments. Mechanistic studies reveal that Fe incorporation alters the coordination environment while enabling synergistic Fe→Co charge transfer. This cooperative effect strengthens N 2 activation at the neighboring Co sites and concurrently suppresses the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. This work highlights metal-to-metal charge transfer in MOFs as a fundamental strategy for constructing efficient and durable photocatalysts for solar-driven ammonia synthesis.

Site-specific electronic sacrifice at a MOF-on-MOF-derived CoP/(CoFe)P2 heterointerface for oxygen evolution catalysis

Rong Lin,Yunan Ye,Yuanjie Cao,Hui Liu,Haoran Wang,Shaoda Huang,Qipeng Li,Linjie Zhang,Jinjie Qian

The rational design of heterointerfaces is a potent strategy for optimizing the electronic structure of catalysts, yet achieving site-specific activation at the atomic level remains a formidable challenge. Nevertheless, most reported heterostructures suffer from ill-defined interfaces and non-specific activation, thereby obscuring structure-activity relationships and limiting mechanistic understanding. Herein, we propose a lattice-guided MOF-on-MOF strategy to fabricate an atomically precise CoP/(CoFe)P 2 interface embedded within an N-doped carbon matrix (CoP/(CoFe)P 2 -C). Specifically, the epitaxial growth of CoFe-PBA nanocubes on a MOF-274 template yields a MOF-274@PBA precursor with pre-organized metal domains, which are transformed into intimate phosphide heterojunctions during phosphidation. The optimized CoP/(CoFe)P 2 -C catalyst exhibits exceptional oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity in alkaline media, requiring an overpotential of only 269 mV to reach 10 mA cm −2 , while demonstrating remarkable structural stability for over 60 h. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that this superior performance stems from a site-specific electronic sacrifice mechanism. At the heterointerface, specific Co sites act as electronic buffers, sacrificially stabilizing unfavorable local configurations. This redistribution optimizes the electronic structure of adjacent Co and Fe sites, collectively lowering the kinetic barrier for *OOH formation and thus enhancing OER kinetics. This work establishes a controllable and generalizable strategy for constructing phosphide heterointerfaces with atomic-level precision, and provides fundamental mechanistic insights into the rational design of advanced OER electrocatalysts through site-specific electronic modulation.

Synergistic radical/nonradical pathways in Fe3O4@CoFe-LDH nanocomposite for peroxymonosulfate-activated tetracycline degradation: mechanism and interface engineering

Xudong Hu,Jingyi Shang,Xiaolian Zhao,Jun Long,Izaz ul Islam,Shuang Li,Usman Farooq,Xinhai Wang

Fe 3 O 4 @CoFe-LDH, a magnetic composite, and its counterpart, CoFe-LDH, were successfully synthesized via a co-precipitation method and systematically investigated for their performance and mechanism in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for tetracycline (TC) degradation. Fe 3 O 4 @CoFe-LDH possessed a typical LDH structure with Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles uniformly dispersed in the CoFe-LDH matrix, forming a heterojunction interface that effectively combined the magnetism of Fe 3 O 4 and the high catalytic activity of CoFe-LDH. Magnetic analysis (VSM) indicated a saturation magnetization of 23.93 emu/g for the composite, enabling magnetic separation and recovery within 30 s, significantly enhancing the practical applicability. Under optimal conditions (0.07 g/L catalyst, 0.75 mM PMS, pH 6–8, 25 °C), Fe 3 O 4 @CoFe-LDH/PMS achieved 97.6 % TC (25 mg/L) degradation, outperforming CoFe-LDH (93.9 %). Radical quenching and ESR revealed sulfate radicals (SO 4 •- ) and nonradical ( 1 O 2 ) as dominant species, with Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ –Co 2+ synergism promoting 1 O 2 pathways. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed enhanced charge transfer and reduced activation energy at the heterojunction. After four cycles, Fe 3 O 4 @CoFe-LDH retained 82.3 % activity (vs. 73.2 % for CoFe-LDH) and exhibited strong anti-interference (86.8–92.4 % TC removal in natural water), highlighting its engineering potential.

Catalytic Ozone Decomposition of Methylene Blue by MoS2 and Chitosan-Derived N-Doped Carbon Co-Modified CoFe-LDO

Yang Yuanfang,Xu Yunlan,Tang Danli,Xiang Tanxia

In this work, CoFe-layered double metal oxide (CoFe-LDO) was obtained by a co-precipitation-calcination route using CoFe-layered double metal hydroxide (CoFe-LDH) as precursor material, and then MoS 2 and chitosan-derived N-doped carbon co- modified CoFe-LDO composite catalyst (MoS 2 @CoFe-LDO/NCS) was prepared. This material was characterized by SEM, EDS, FTIR, XRD and XPS, and was synthesized to catalyze ozonation for the degradation of methylene blue (MB). The influence of CoFe-LDO dosage, O 3 flow rate, initial MB concentration, catalyst dosage, initial pH and coexisting compounds on MB removal efficiency were systematically investigated. The decomposition efficiency of 50 mg/L MB by 10%MoS 2 @CoFe-LDO/NCS reached 96.47% within 8 min under the conditions of 10% CoFe-LDO dosage (CoFe -LDO:CS), pH = 6.8, catalyst dosage of 0.4 g/L, Ozone flow rate of 1.87 mg/(L⋅min) and 25 °C. Stability tests and metal ion leaching experiments confirmed the excellent chemical stability and environmental compatibility of 10%MoS 2 @CoFe-LDO/NCS. Electrochemical characterization showed that 10%MoS 2 @CoFe-LDO/NCS possessed enhanced current density, redox activity and excellent electron transfer capability. Quenching experiments revealed that 1 O 2 , O 2 ∙ − and ∙ OH contributed to the MB degradation process, with O 2 ∙ − confirmed as the dominant reactive species.

Highly active CoFe–carbon nanosphere electrocatalysts with triazine-driven architecture for bifunctional oxygen reactions in zinc–air batteries

Weizhong Lyu,Chenyuan Deng,Xiao Xu,Siqi Qiu,Zhangjian Li,Hongliang Wu,Yuechao Yao,Jizhao Zou

Designing efficient and durable bifunctional electrocatalysts remains a key challenge for rechargeable zinc–air batteries. Herein, we report a rationally engineered CoFe alloy nanoparticle-modified nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanosphere catalyst (CoFeNHCNF-x), synthesized using a covalent triazine framework (CTF) as both a nitrogen-rich precursor and structural template. The CTF-derived architecture effectively exposes metal nanoparticles and enhances mass transport, while promoting strong metal–support interactions. As a result, CoFeNHCNF-4 exhibits outstanding bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic performance, delivering an ORR half-wave potential of 0.86 V vs. RHE and an OER overpotential of 290 mV at 10 mA cm−2. When assembled in a ZAB, the catalyst achieves a high peak power density of 156.4 mW cm−2, a specific capacity of 711 mAh g−1, and remarkable cycling stability over 500 h at 10 mA cm−2, outperforming commercial Pt/C + RuO2 counterparts. This work provides a promising strategy for the development of high-performance bifunctional air electrodes via synergistic integration of CTF-derived carbon supports and transition metal alloys.
