Robust bifunctional and highly efficient electrocatalysts for both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) exhibits great prospect in a zinc-air battery (ZAB). Here, we demonstrated a facile route to synthesize a bifunctional electrocatalyst with CoO nanoparticles embedded in N-doped carbon by interface engineering. The precursor which consists of ball-milled polyaniline (BM-PANI), carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and cobalt acetate tetrahydrate (Co(Ac)2·4H2O) was obtained via homogeneous mixture in the presence of ethanol, and thus, satisfactory interface was formed. After calcination, the synthesized CoO/N-doped carbon composite material presents a half-wave potential of 0.818 V for ORR and an overpotential of 0.417 V at 10 mA cm−2 for OER, which endows it a power density of 92.04 mW cm−2 in a homemade rechargeable ZAB and a high stability outperforming commercial Pt/C. This work highlights the mixture of precursors by interface engineering, thus improving the synergistic effect between metal oxide and carbon and elevating the electrocatalytic activity.

Cobalt oxide (CoO) with high theoretical capacity is a potential anode material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs), however its application is limited by high cost and volume expansion. Considering the cheapness of Zn and advantages of bimetallic oxide compounds, CoO/ZnO nanoclusters immobilized on N-doped 3 D reduced graphene oxide (CoO/ZnO-NrGO) were constructed by facile solvothermal and freeze-drying method as the LIBs anode for improving lithium (Li) ions storage. Three-dimensional conductive network structure not only reduced the volume expansion of CoO and ZnO but also accelerated the transfer rate of Li ions. Besides, nitrogen doping provided more active sites for plentiful Li ions storage. Phase composition and microstructure of CoO/ZnO-NrGO were measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy , Raman spectroscopy , X-ray diffraction and so on. Synchronously, electrochemical property of CoO/ZnO-NrGO was also tested. It was found that the specific capacity of CoO 1.2 /ZnO 0.6 -NrGO 6.78 was 1494 mA h g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , higher that of other bimetallic oxides such as CoO–MnO, CoO–Co 3 O 4 , CoO–CoFe 2 O 4 and so on. The capacity of CoO 1.2 /ZnO 0.6 -NrGO 6.78 was maintained approximately 600 mA h g −1 at 2.0 A g −1 after 1000 cycles. Taking these advantages into account, composites of bimetallic oxides and carbon material with high specific capacity provide a novel idea for a new generation of LIBs.

Designing advanced cobalt-based catalysts capable of selectively generating singlet oxygen (1O2) is crucial for suppressing interference from coexisting reactive oxygen species in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and achieving efficient degradation of organic pollutants. In this work, an interface engineering strategy was employed to fabricate Co-CoO-Co3O4/CN featuring abundant oxygen vacancies and Co active sites. The constructed Co-CoO-Co3O4/CN + PMS system achieves nearly complete degradation of 50 mg·L–1 RhB within 20 min, and its catalytic activity outperforms most reported cobalt-based catalysts, with a specific rate constant value as high as 11.23 L2·min–1·g–2. In addition, the Co-CoO-Co3O4/CN + PMS system exhibits excellent broad-spectrum applicability, outstanding environmental tolerance, and stability. It enables continuous treatment of 49.8 L of RhB solution, with the degradation efficiency consistently maintained above 99%. Systematic investigations demonstrate that Co-CoO-Co3O4/CN exhibits a strong interaction with PMS, and this enhanced interaction can drive the efficient conversion of PMS into superoxide anion radicals (O2•–), which are further transformed into 1O2. This work provides new insights into the rational design of high-performance cobalt-based catalysts, and paves the way for efficient PMS activation and selective 1O2 generation.

In the current study, N-doped apple tree branch-based biochar-supported Co/CoO catalyst (Co/CoO@NBCs) was prepared using an impregnation-pyrolysis synergistic strategy, which addressed the issues of easy aggregation, poor stability, and low specific surface area of the Co/CoO catalyst. The characterization results show that Co/CoO@NBCs has a large specific surface area (1871.02 m2/g), a developed pore structure (0.99 cm3/g), and Co exists in the form of Co atoms and CoO. Under conditions of 0.25 mM peroxymonosulfate (PMS), 10 mg of catalyst, and room temperature, the degradation rate of norfloxacin (NOR, 30 mg/L) reached equilibrium within 70 min, with a removal rate of 99.06%. Besides the strong alkali condition (pH = 11) and the presence of HCO3–, the removal rate of NOR by Co/CoO@NBCs in other pH ranges and in anionic environments can still exceed 73%. Furthermore, analysis of the degradation mechanism shows that the active sites of Co0 and Co2+ can activate PMS to produce reactive oxygen species, with O2–• and 1O2 serving as the main active substances involved in NOR degradation. Additionally, tests with real water systems and cycling experiments further demonstrate that Co/CoO@NBCs have practical application potential. This work offers new insights into designing heterogeneous catalysts with multiple active sites for wastewater treatment.

Cardiac Troponin I (cTnI), a critical biomarker for diagnosing acute myocardial infarction (AMI), plays an essential role in clinical practice. While traditional lateral flow immunoassays (LFIA) are widely used for cTnI detection due to their simplicity and rapid results, they often suffer from limited quantification capability, low sensitivity, and compromised accuracy, limiting their broader clinical application. To overcome these issues, we developed a dual-signal LFIA (dLFIA) by incorporating Au@CoO nanoparticles (NPs) for quantitative and precise cTnI determination. The synthesized Au@CoO NPs present black color as colorimetric signals and its peroxidase-like activity was adopted to yield chemiluminescence (CL) signals. It is worth noting that sodium perborate was employed to replace hydrogen peroxide as the co-reactant for the aim of enhancing long-term stability and CL intensity. Such dual-signal strategy offers self-checking merit, significantly improving detection reliability. What is more, a portable assay device was designed for automatic release of the reagents involved, further simplifying the detection process. The dLFIA demonstrated a wide linear range with limits of detection of 0.39 ng/mL in colorimetric mode and 0.22 ng/mL in chemiluminescent mode, which are 8 and 15 times more sensitive than traditional LFIA, respectively. This dLFIA platform can act as a promising assay tool for point-of-care testing, particularly in AMI diagnosis and potentially in other applications.

Fabricating electromagnetic coupling carbon-based aerogels with tightly bound and uniformly distributed components is a proven strategy for improving electromagnetic wave absorption (EWA) performance. Herein, highly ordered porous cobalt/cobalt (II) oxide/carbon (Co/CoO/C) aerogels were successfully fabricated via ice-templated freeze casting coupled with one-step carbonization, relying on the complexation reaction between cobalt ions and chitosan. The optimal sample, Co/CoO/C-1.0, achieves a minimum reflection loss (RL m ᵢ n ) of −58.15 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.48 GHz at a thickness of 2.2 mm. Additionally, the aerogel exhibits excellent radar stealth performance (with a significant reduction in radar cross-section, RCS) and thermal insulation properties. Gradient structural design effectively extends the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) to 11.23 GHz. Mechanism analysis reveals that the outstanding EWA performance of these aerogels stems from the synergistic effect of diverse attenuation pathways, including multiple scattering, dipole polarization, interfacial polarization, conduction loss and magnetic resonance. The regulation of cobalt content effectively achieves an optimal balance between impedance matching and electromagnetic loss. This multifunctional Co/CoO/C aerogel integrating EWA, radar stealth and thermal insulation capabilities possess great application prospects under complex service conditions and provide critical guidance for the rational design of carbon-based EWA absorbers. The highly ordered porous electromagnetic coupling Co/CoO/C aerogel was synthesized. The optimized aerogel achieves a minimum reflection loss (RL m ᵢ n ) of −58.15 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.48 GHz at a thickness of 2.2 mm. The gradient multilayer structural design effectively broadens the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) to 11.23 GHz. Download: Download high-res image (393KB) Download: Download full-size image

Commercial AC is employed as the support to fabricate the P-CoO/Co 9 S 8 @AC electrode. • The formation of P-CoO/Co 9 S 8 @AC realizes the deep coupling of macroscopic structural buffering and atomic-scale electronic regulation. • The synergy of heterointerface and P doping enhances OH − adsorption and accelerates redox reaction rate. • The ASC achieves a high energy density of 90.4 Wh kg −1 at 750 W kg −1 . Supercapacitor performance is largely determined by electrode materials. Transition metal compounds (TMCs) have high theoretical capacities but suffer from sluggish charge transport and volume-induced structural degradation, which limits their practical applications in energy storage. To overcome the inherent bottlenecks of TMCs in energy storage, this work reports a novel dual-regulation strategy to construct a P-doped CoO/Co 9 S 8 heterostructure anchored on activated carbon (P-CoO/Co 9 S 8 @AC). The formation of the P-doped CoO/Co 9 S 8 @AC heterostructure enables close coupling between macroscopic structural buffering and atomic-scale electronic modulation. Introducing activated carbon (AC) suppresses particle agglomeration and buffers volume expansion, while the synergistic effect of heterointerface engineering and P doping significantly reduces the charge-transfer resistance to 0.27 Ω. Benefiting from these multidimensional advantages, the as-prepared material delivers a specific capacity of 1697.3 C g −1 (3394.6 F g −1 ) at 1 A g −1 , outperforming previously reported nickel sulfide/nickel oxide heterostructures (2278 F g −1 ) and P-doped ternary cobalt-based sulfide electrodes (2716 F g −1 ). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the P-doped heterostructure has an OH − adsorption energy of −4.82 eV and an upshifted d-band center, thereby improving intrinsic conductivity and OH − interfacial adsorption. Furthermore, the assembled hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) achieves a high energy density of 90.4 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 750 W kg −1 , while retaining 86.1% of its capacity after 20,000 cycles. This study provides a design strategy for constructing high-performance composite electrodes by integrating heterointerface engineering and heteroatom doping. A novel strategy is reported to construct P-CoO/Co 9 S 8 @AC. DFT calculations demonstrate that the synergistic effect of CoO/Co 9 S 8 heterostructure formation and P doping strengthens OH − adsorption and boosts the electrochemical performance. The major challenges for Li-O 2 batteries are sluggish reaction kinetics and large overpotentials due to the cathode passivation resulting from insulative and insoluble Li 2 O 2 . Here, a novel nanodot (ND)-modified electrolyte is designed by employing cobalt bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (Co(TFSI) 2 ) as an electrolyte additive. The Co(TFSI) 2 additive can react with discharge intermediate LiO 2 and product Li 2 O 2 to form CoO NDs. The generated CoO NDs are well dispersed in electrolyte, which integrates both the high catalytic activity of solid catalyst and the good wettability of soluble catalyst. Under the catalytis of CoO NDs, Li 2 O 2 is produced and deposits on the cathode together with them. At the recharge process, these well dispersed CoO NDs help to decompose solid Li 2 O 2 at a lower overpotential. The Li-O 2 cells with Co(TFSI) 2 exhibit a long cycle life of 200 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g −1 under a cutoff capacity of 1000 mAh g −1 , as well as a superior reversibility associated with the Li 2 O 2 formation and decomposition. The study is expected to broaden the range of electrolyte additives and provide a new view to developing highly dispersed NDs-based catalysts for Li-O 2 batteries.

The use of electrochemical tactics to reduce nitrate to the valorized product ammonia has become the hot topic. Recently, the synergistic effect of metal/metal oxide is provided to significantly enhance the electrocatalytic performance of nitrate reduction as opposed to monometallic catalyst. In this work, a reticulated fibre structure with Cu/CoO nanoparticles (Cu x Co y O-NC) was prepared for electrocatalytic nitrate reduction (NO 3 - RR) to ammonia. The optimized catalyst (Cu 1 Co 1 O-NC) displayed brilliant performance for NO 3 - RR with high Faraday efficiency (FE) of 97.9 %, the excellent NH 3 yield rate of 0.45 mmol h −1 cm −2 , prominent NH 3 selectivity of 98.4 % and efficient NO 3 – conversion of 99.2 % at −0.79 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Besides, Cu 1 Co 1 O-NC also exhibits the potential for uranium recovery from simulated wastewater containing nitrate and uranyl ions with a total yield of 508 mg ammonium diuranate after i-t measurement for 6 times. This work not only provides an efficient catalyst for reduction nitrate but also proposes the sustainable method for uranium containing sewage realizing nitrogen cycle.

Advanced environmental governance techniques using photothermal nanomaterials for pollutant removal and water recycling are highly regarded. Here, we incorporated CoO nanospecies onto halloysite nanotubes via in-situ polymerization of tannic acid coordinated with Co ions and carbonization. The resulting halloysite nanotube hybrids with CoO/carbon layer (HNTs@CoO/C) afford great exposure of CoO nanospecies onto the N-doping carbon layer modified halloysite. Compared to composites without a carbon layer, optimized Co(II)/Co(III) redox cycles are achieved. More pyridine nitrogen species on the carbon layer enhance the catalyst's surface affinity for polar contaminants. HNTs@CoO/C has nearly 8.6 fold higher catalytic degradation efficiency for norfloxacin (0.164 min −1 versus 0.019 min −1 for HNTs@CoO). Quenching experiments show that co-existing multiple active species ( SO₄ − , OH, O₂ − , and 1 O₂) play important roles in norfloxacin (NFX) degradation, among which 1 O₂ is dominant. The optimal HNTs@CoO/C also effectively removes other contaminants like sulfadiazine (SDZ), tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC), and carbamazepine (CBZ). Moreover, anchoring HNTs@CoO/C on a used cotton towel forms a 2D evaporator. Under the simulated sunlight, it has a good photothermal conversion ability, heating from 19.9 °C to 40.3 °C in 8 min. As a floatable system, it efficiently evaporates water and degrades contaminants in the presence of PMS. These results indicate the potential of this approach for water treatment and resource utilization.

The sulfate radical-mediated advanced oxidation processes are emerging as an effective technology for water purification. Herein, flower-like C/CoO/Co 3 O 4 heterojunctions with abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs) were fabricated by a facile method and employed as excellent activators for peroxymonosulfate activation towards tetracycline (TC) degradation. The emerging OVs in C/CoO/Co 3 O 4 not only facilitate electron transfer for accelerating the redox cycle of Co 3+ /Co 2+ but promote the generation of non-radical 1 O 2 involved in TC elimination. Consequently, 99 % of TC (20 mg/L) could be removed by the C/Co-2/PMS system within a period of 80 s, more superior to that of commercial CoO (33 % in 80 s) and Co 3 O 4 (28 % in 80 s), respectively. In addition, the C/Co-2/PMS system displayed excellent activities for different pollutant degradation, such as rhodamine B (99 % in 80 s), congo red (99 % in 80 s), and ciprofloxacin (78 % in 80 s). The quenching experiment together with EPR characterization indicated that the produced SO 4 •- / • OH/ 1 O 2 species participated in TC removal with the sequence of SO 4 •- > 1 O 2 > • OH. Besides, the effects of catalyst dosage, TC concentration, PMS concentration, inorganic anions and organic matter on TC degradation were studied. The cyclic experiment demonstrated the robust stability of the as-prepared sample. After 7 cycles, the C/Co-2/PMS system can still remain a TC degradation rate of 88 % with low Co (0.05 mg/L) ions leakage. Finally, the possible reaction mechanism of the current catalytic system was explored and discussed in detail.

Exploring cost-effective non-noble metal-based catalysts with high activity and stability is of great significance for energy conversion and storage involving oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, we employed a laser irradiation technique to synthesis Fe doped CoO nanoparticles with ultrafine size (≈ 5.4 nm) and abundant oxygen vacancies (Fe-O v -CoO). The ultrafine size of Fe-O v -CoO nanoparticles provides more active sites to be exposed. Fe doping and oxygen vacancy promote the intrinsic activity and electron transfer rates of Fe-O v -CoO, giving rise to high activity and stability catalyst for OER. Fe-O v -CoO delivers a large current density of 1000 mA cm −2 at an overpotential of 548 mV, which is much better than commercial RuO 2 . Moreover, Fe-O v -CoO presents a remarkable long-term stability with negligible degeneration at a high current density of 500 mA cm −2 for 120 h. This work provides a new route to develop OER electrocatalyst with high activity and stability.
