A novel ethylenediamine chelating resin (PEDA-g-PS) was prepared by grafting poly (glycidyl methacrylate) onto the chloromethylated polystyrene beads via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP), and followed by the ring-opening reaction of epoxy and amine groups. The resin was characterized by infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and elemental analysis. The adsorption property for Cu(II) and Cd(II) on the resin was examined. By analyzing adsorption isotherm, adsorption kinetics and the influence of solution pH on the adsorption capacity, the adsorption of Cu(II) and Cd(II) on PEDA-g-PS resin was proved to be Langmuir single-layer adsorption model, and adsorption process conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. The maximum adsorption capacities for Cu(II) and Cd(II) could reach 1.19 and 1.95 mmol·g –1 at pH 3.0 by fitting Langmuir model. The adsorption of the Cu(II) and Cd(II) was hardly affected by common coexisting ions such as Na (I), K (I), Ca (II) and Mg (II), whereas they were slightly decreased when Fe (II) and Zn (II) coexisted in the solution, which illustrated the selective adsorption of Cu(II) and Cd(II) from wastewater. After ten adsorption–desorption cycles, the adsorption capacity of the resin did not change significantly, indicating that the resin exhibited excellent adsorption properties for heavy metal ions and excellent reusability.

Heavy-metal pollution is a significant environmental issue that has raised global concern due to its harmful impact on humans and the natural ecosystem. Heavy metal pollution poses several challenges in terms of remediation, including low adsorption capacity and efficiency, scale-up issues and non-degradability. Here, we developed an eco-friendly tunable dual-wavelength absorption mesoporous wood aerogel (TDWA) for removal of Cu 2+ ions from wastewater based on wood nanotechnology and carboxylated functionalization treatment. Nanostructured pores generated from the cell walls with carboxyl groups due to the removal of most lignin/hemicellulose and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine oxidation. Mechanical compression was parallelly applied to the transverse direction of TDWA resulted in removing micron-scale cell cavity and intercellular, which significantly improved the dynamic adsorption performance with an excellent Cu 2+ adsorption capacity of 115 mg g −1 . This value is superior to most wood-based adsorption membrane as wastewater mainly flowed through the continuous microfibril network in the cell wall. The double-layer mesoporous TDWA membrane (5 mm) possessed a favorable removal efficiency (99.83 %) even after 5-cyclic adsorption (92.34 %). The invented nanostructured TDWA membrane in the current study has promising potential to substitute the present plastic-based membrane in the realistic Cu 2+ adsorption because of the facile technology, renewability and high removal efficient, as well as the complete biodegradability.

There exists an obvious contradiction between Cu(III) generation and Cu(I) contribution in reductants enhanced Cu(II)/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) process because the involved electron transfer pathways were always ignored in previous studies. This study investigated the MXene-mediated electron transfer mechanism in Cu(II)/PMS for the first time. The introduction of MXene significantly promoted atrazine degradation under acidic condition because the in-situ generation of Cu(I) was an excellent activator for PMS. Under alkaline condition, although addition of MXene generated a large amount of Cu(I), the degradation of atrazine was inhibited due to that the conversion of Cu(I) to Cu(III) was interrupted. The strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) altered the reactive intermediate species from Cu(III) (two-electron transfer) to hydroxyl radical (HO • ) and sulfate radical (SO 4 •- ) (one-electron transfer) under alkaline condition. This work proposed a novel MXene-mediated electron transfer mechanism and improved the understanding of Cu(III)/Cu(I) transformation pathway.

Rice hull biochar modified by ZnS nanocrystals (RBZ) was developed as an efficient absorbent for the removal of Cu(II) in aqueous solution. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied for modeling and optimizing the performance of RBZ. The maximum adsorption capacity of RBZ toward Cu(II) through the Langmuir model fitting was 248.98 mg g−1, which was four times larger than that of rice hull biochar (RB). The adsorption kinetics of Cu(II) and XPS analysis revealed that the chemisorption process played the leading role when using RBZ. Through competition ions study, Pb(II), Cd(II), or Ca(II) can slightly reduce the adsorption of Cu(II). According to the Box Behnken design method, the analysis of variance results showed that the pH and adsorbent dosage had significant effects on the predicted responses of adsorption capacity and removal efficiency. When using the optimum conditions, pH 6, temperature 27 °C, and dosage 0.20 mg mL−1 for removing Cu(II) in solution, the maximum adsorption capacity and relatively higher removal efficiency could be obtained through the 3D response surface plots. The results demonstrated that RSM is feasible to achieve optimal conditions for adsorption capacity and removal efficiency simultaneously toward heavy metals from aqueous medium, and the interaction between them when using the biochar/ZnS composite.

Cellulose-based aerogels have considerable potential for various application due to renewable, low cost, and high availability. However, mechanical robustness and functionalization remain major challenges. Here, we synthesized a compressible, recoverable cellulose nanofiber (CNF)/carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/branched polyethyleneimine (BPEI) aerogel via electrostatic-modulated interfacial covalent crosslinking and freeze-drying process. The porous BPEI@CNF/CMC aerogel possessed excellent mechanical compression and high-density metal-chelating groups, which exhibited fast adsorption kinetics and high adsorption capacity (452.49 mg g −1 ) in static copper adsorption process. Furthermore, BPEI@CNF/CMC aerogels displayed excellent recyclability and could still reach 85% after 10 cycles. The integrated analyses of ATR-FTIR and XPS suggested that the predominant adsorption mechanism included electrostatic interaction, ion-exchange and chelation. This strategy provides a sustainable route to fabricate efficient biomass-based adsorbents for selective copper removal from water.

Low-toxicity, highly luminescent, and water-soluble AgInS2/ZnS nanocrystals (NCs) have been synthesized via a microwave-assisted approach. The structure and optical features of the AgInS2/ZnS NCs were characterized by X-ray diffraction, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet visible absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The as-synthesized AgInS2/ZnS NCs exhibited high PL quantum yields (40%) and long PL lifetimes (424.5 ns). Furthermore, the dynamic changes of the intracellular copper(II) levels in HeLa cells were monitored using the AgInS2/ZnS NCs as fluorescent probes. The results showed that the AgInS2/ZnS NCs as promising fluorescent probes can be used in the detection of intracellular copper ions in living cells.

The regeneration of skin tissue is often impeded by bacterial infection seriously. At the same time, reactive oxygen species (ROS) are often overexpressed in infected skin wounds, causing persistent inflammation that further hinders the skin repair process. All of these make the treatment of infected wounds is still a great challenge in clinic. In this study, we fabricate Cu(II)@MXene photothermal complex based on electrostatic self-assembly between Cu 2+ and MXene, which are then introduced into a hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogel to form an antibacterial dressing. The rapid adhesion, self-healing, and injectability of the dressing allows the hydrogel to be easily applied to different wound shapes and to provide long-term wound protection. More importantly, this easily prepared Cu(II)@MXene complex can act as a photothermal antibacterial barrier, ROS scavenger and angiogenesis promoter simultaneously to accelerate the healing rate of infected wounds. Our in vivo experiments strongly proved that the inflammatory condition, collagen deposition, vessel formation, and the final wound closure area were all improved by the application of Cu(II)@MXene photothermal hydrogel dressing.

In this study, magnetic composite microspheres (SCFP) were prepared by cross-linking chitosan (CS), sodium alginate (SA), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and ferric tetraoxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) in a CaCl 2 solution. CS and Fe 3 O 4 were encapsulated in gel spheres formed by cross-linking SA with Ca(II), while PVA facilitated the dispersion of CS in SA. SCFP was utilized as an adsorbent to remove Cu(II) from water. The effects of the initial pH of the solution, SCFP dosage, and initial Cu(II) concentration on the adsorption efficiency were investigated through batch experiments. The results demonstrated that the adsorption capacity reached 58.260 mg/g (removal rate = 97.1%) after 100 min of adsorption at a pH of 5. The removal rate remained above 90% even after 6 cycles of the cycling experiment. The incorporation of CS with other functional materials allowed SCFP to compensate for its inherent drawbacks such as low mechanical strength, poor acid resistance, and short service life. The pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Freundlich adsorption isotherm provided better descriptions of the adsorption process. A comprehensive analysis was conducted on the structure and adsorption mechanism of SCFP using characterization techniques such as SEM-EDS, FTIR , BET, XRD , etc. In summary, SCFP has the potential to be an excellent environmentally friendly material for the removal of Cu(II).

Heavy metal pollution is a serious environmental problem, and adsorption is regarded as an effective technology for metal ions removal. A new absorbent triethylene tetramine (TETA)-modified crosslinked polyacrylonitrile (TETA-modified XL-PAN) was prepared by photo-induced precipitation polymerization of acrylonitrile in water at room temperature using FeC 2 O 4 as photoinitiator and N , N′ -methylenebisacrylamide as crosslinking agent. The TETA provided amidogens, to bond Cu(II) ions and the crosslinking agent was used to improve the stability of adsorbent. FTIR, SEM, BET, and TG were used to characterize the TETA-modified XL-PAN. The FTIR results demonstrate that the XL-PAN was successfully modified by TETA. The SEM images show that TETA-modified XL-PAN powders were agglomerated from 100 to 200 nm spherical particles. TETA-modified XL-PAN was used as an adsorbent to remove Cu(II) ion from wastewater. The effects of contact time, pH, Cu(II) concentration, temperature, and reuse cycles on adsorption were investigated, respectively. Experimental results showed that the adsorption isotherms agreed well with the Langmuir model and a chemical adsorption between TETA-modified XL-PAN and Cu(II) was inferred. After optimizing the experimental conditions, the maximum adsorption capacity of TETA-modified XL-PAN for Cu(II) was 46.6 mg/g with an adsorption time of 8 h. Furthermore, the TETA-modified XL-PAN adsorbent can be well regenerated by acid solutions. After eight regeneration and adsorption processes, the adsorption capacity still reached more than 90% of the first adsorption capacity. These results demonstrated the potential use of TETA-modified XL-PAN as an effective adsorbent for Cu(II) ions removal from wastewater.

In this study, three magnetic flocculants, namely, MC, MC-g-PAM, and MC-g-PAA, were prepared. The structure characteristics, flocculation performance, and floc characteristics of the three magnetic flocculants were systematically studied and compared. SEM, FT-IR, XPS, XRD, TG–DSC, and VSM characterization results show that MC, MC-g-PAM, and MC-g-PAA are successfully prepared and exhibit good magnetic induction. The removal rates of copper ions by MC, MC-g-PAM, and MC-g-PAA under the optimal coagulation conditions are 93.39 %, 88.64 %, and 61.41 %, respectively. Kinetic fitting shows that the flocculation reaction process of MC and MC-g-PAM conforms to pseudo first-order kinetics, while the flocculation reaction process of MC-g-PAA conforms to pseudo second-order kinetics. The flocs produced by MC-g-PAA have larger particle size and fractal dimension than those by MC and MC-g-PAM. At 80 mg/L dosage and pH 6, the floc size and floc fractal dimension obtained by MC-g-PAA reach the maximum values of 48.28 um and 1.468, respectively. Zeta potential studies show that the flocculation functions of the three flocculants are mainly adsorption bridging, adsorption electric neutralization, and chelating precipitation. Recycling experiments show that MC-g-PAA has good recyclability, and the recovery rate after the fifth use is 77.24 % with the Cu(II) removal rate of 67.53 %.

This study combined agricultural waste utilization with wastewater treatment and developed a novel nanocomposite adsorbent for Cu 2 + removal from water. Rice straw (RS) was used as the supporter of hydrated titanium oxide (HTO), which has strong affinity toward heavy metals. HTO nanoparticles were uniformly loaded onto the surface of natural rice straw through a facile sol–gel method. The characterization results show that the diameter of the RS-HTO nanoparticles was about 80 nm with SEM. The fabricated nanocomposite RS-HTO exhibited excellent structural stability under different solution pH and ionic strength. Adsorption of Cu 2 + increased as pH rose from 2.0 to 7.5 with 2 g/L RS-HTO in 50 mL solution (10 mg/L). Meanwhile, when initial concentration of Cu 2 + was 10 mg/L, the adsorptive removal efficiency was higher than 99% by RS-HTO at a pH level of 7.5. The adsorption selectivity was investigated and proved that the coexisting cation ions such as Na + , Mg 2 + and Ca 2+ led to a small decrease of Cu 2 + adsorption capacity. Adsorption isotherms of Cu 2 + onto RS-HTO fitted well with Langmuir equation, and the adsorption kinetics were best described by pseudo-second order model. The concentration of Cu 2 + in the simulated wastewater can be reduced to be lower than 0.2 mg/L through fixed-bed adsorption process and the exhausted RS-HTO can be easily regenerated with HCl–NaCl mixed solution.

The alteration of amino acid register in peptides could affect their folding properties and thus functions. The effect of sequence in metal ion induced folding of peptide/protein is important in the design of new functional protein structures, such as biomimetics. In this paper, a set of hairpin peptides with identical composition but different histidine locations have been designed to exploit the metal ion-mediated peptide intramolecular folding transformation through the adjustment of histidine and lysine residue locations. The results demonstrated that the histidine positions in peptide sequence could dramatically affect the coordination modes between peptides and Cu(II) ion. The Cu(II) coordination could affect the secondary structure transformation and self-assembly along with electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding synergistically. Three molecules with VHVH sequence at each side of the turn segment (V D PPT) were apt to coordinate with Cu(II) ion with three or four histidines. The closer the VHVH motifs were to the turn segment, the more easier the molecules were to form β sheet structure with the promotion of Cu(II) ions. These results demonstrated that the purposeful location of key amino acids in peptides could achieve the controllable conformation transformation of hairpin peptides, which provides useful strategies for biomimetic design, such as metalloenzymes.
