Non-contact thermometry operating at the sub-micrometer level based on self-referencing upconversion (UC) micro-nanomaterial is an attractive pursuit for optical thermometers. Here, a novel accordion-like Y 2 O 3 :Er 3+ nanothermometer with green/red UC luminescence is obtained from the solvent-free grinding and the following temperature-programmed calcination of the Er 3+ -doped Y-containing metal-organic framework (MOF) precursor. Upon 980 nm laser irradiation, the as-prepared Y 2 O 3 :Er 3+ exhibits dual-emitting green and red emissions originating from Er 3+ ions with a two-photon UC process, and the intensities are strongly dependent on temperature. The optical thermometry behaviours of Y 2 O 3 :Er 3+ nanothermometer using the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique are studied in the temperature range of 298–393 K within the physiological temperature, in which the thermally coupled levels of two green emissions and another pair of coupled levels with red and green emissions are comparatively investigated. A relative large calculated energy gap Δ E (951 cm −1 ) for the thermally couple levels of 2 H 11/2 and 4 S 3/2 and a maximum absolute sensitivity ( S a ) of 0.0027 K −1 at 393 K are determined, respectively. This novel accordion-like Y 2 O 3 :Er 3+ nanothermometer exhibits excellent optical sensing stability and high temperature resolution, demonstrating its great potential as reliable and promising optical thermometers.

Growth of Er 3+ -doped 100-nm thick LiNbO 3 (LN) films on Z-cut LiTaO 3 (LT) single-crystal by e -beam evaporation and in-situ anneal at 600–800°C was studied. Crystalline phase, crystallographic orientation, Er 3+ spectroscopic properties, constituent element valence states, defects, Er 3+ concentration and stoichiometry of the films were characterized. The results show that the films are in LN single-crystal state and orient along with c crystallographic axis. Constituent elements Li, O and Er are present in their respective single valence states Li + , O 2− , Er 3+ , while the Nb is in two valence states Nb 5+ and Nb 4+ . The films have Li 2 O-contents around congruent point. Antisite(Nb Li 4+ ) is the major defect. Its concentration decreases, while Li 2 O-content, crystallinity degree, and fluorescence intensity increase with increased growth temperature. The presence of Er 3+ in the grown films is in the form of LN crystalline phase. Its concentration is considerably lower than that in initial target material because of lower e -beam evaporation efficiency of heavy Er 3+ .

Fluorescent powders exhibiting excitation dependence and luminescent discoloration are profoundly relevant for concealing information and enhancing optical antiforgery protection. In this study, Bi 3+ /Ln 3+ (Eu 3+ , Er 3+ )-doped phosphors exhibiting multicolor luminescence and excitation wavelength dependence were synthesized. The Bi 3+ /Eu 3+ -codoped phosphors emitted blue, pink, lavender, and red lights under excitation from conventional ultraviolet (UV) sources. In addition to emitting blue light, the Bi 3+ /Er 3+ -codoped phosphors also transmitted upconversion-emission light from green to yellow under 980-nm laser excitation. Additionally, the luminous color of the Ca 3 Y 2 Ge 3 O 12 :0.01Bi 3+ , 0.2Er 3+ phosphor changed from yellow to orange as the temperature increased. Combining the above luminous-color-change phenomena, the word-hiding experiment exhibited excellent realistic information hiding, with complex color transformation in the stamen and petal parts of the flower pattern. Furthermore, rapid multimodal and complex discoloration was achieved using easy-to-obtain light sources, confirming the potential of Bi 3+ /Ln 3+ phosphors for anticounterfeiting applications.

Lanthanide doped upconversion nanocrystals are widely applied in biological imaging, photonics, photovoltaics and therapeutics. Highly monodispersed and uniform products with controllable optical modulation of upconversion fluorescence really matters their promising applications. Here, Er 3+ doped Ba 2 YbF 7 nanocrystals with phase transformation, controllable morphology and tunable upconversion emission color is investigated via varying the concentration of La 3+ . Accompanied with tetragonal Ba 2 YbF 7 transformed to be cubic phase, nanocubes appear instead of nanorods, and a distinct upconversion color changing from yellow to green is obtained. Crystal structure management of Ba 2 YbF 7 contributing to a suppressive back energy transfer process, which facilitates a controllable upconversion color in monodispersed nanocrystals with a uniform morphology, is demonstrated.

Doping lanthanide ions in metal oxides is an efficient way to develop visible and near-infrared (NIR) active photocatalysts. Herein, we present a method to develop NIR active photocatalyst via doping Er 3+ into ZnO/ZnAl 2 O 4 multi-phase oxides by isomorphous replacement of Al 3+ with Er 3+ during the preparation of Zn/Al-hydrotalcite-like compound, specifically, the calcination of the hydrotalcite-like compound at 900 °C. The as-prepared Er 3+ -doped catalyst and its precursor were characterized using X-ray diffraction technique, scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and near-infrared-visible-ultraviolet diffused reflectance spectroscopy. It was found that the doping of Er 3+ causes lattice expansion for ZnO and ZnAl 2 O 4, and yields optical absorptions at visible and NIR light regions. The obtained Er 3+ -doped ZnO/ZnAl 2 O 4 multi-phase oxides produce superoxide and hydroxyl radicals in the photocatalytic process, and show enhanced ultraviolet (UV) photocatalytic activity on degradation of methyl orange, compared to undoped ZnO/ZnAl 2 O 4 multi-phase oxides. The Er 3+ -doped ZnO/ZnAl 2 O 4 multi-phase oxides also possess visible and NIR light photocatalytic activities, and its photocatalytic activity is rather stable under UV, visible and NIR light irradiation. This work provides a new way for doping of lanthanide ions in metal oxides and designing full-spectrum photocatalysts.

The synergistic effect appeared due to the cooperative dual-wavelength excitation by near-infrared (NIR) and ultraviolet (UV) light in rare-earth doped nano-particles (NPs) is very important to improve solar cell efficiency. Herein, we studied the synergistic effect combined with the energy levels of Er 3+ ions and the defect states in KLu 2 F 7 NPs. The introduction of Ce 3+ ions in KLu 2 F 7 :16%Yb 3+ , 2%Er 3+ NPs results in significant improvement of synergistic effect by producing more vacancy defects ( V K ′ ) which serves as shallow traps. We verify unambiguously that the control of the defects distribution exerts a facile approach to promote the synergistic effect with the assistance of Ce 3+ ions doping.

Using a facile hydrothermal method , hexagonal β-NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ 20 mol%, Er 3+ 1 mol% crystals with predictable size and morphology were synthesized and the upconversion (UC) luminescence properties were investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra were used to characterize the samples. The results indicated that the size and morphology of the crystals can be precisely controlled by tuning the pH values of the initial reaction solution and the molar ratio of NaNO 3 to RE 3+ (RE = Y + Yb + Er), and the mechanism was proposed. The UC luminescence properties of β-NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ /Er 3+ crystals were found to strongly depend on the crystal morphologies and sizes. The peak area ratio of green to red (R/G) increased from 0.29 to 1.03 with pH values increasing from 3 to 10, and increased from 1.03 to 1.26 with the increase of molar ratio of NaNO 3 to RE 3+ from 0 to 90. The emission colors were tuned from pure green to orange yellow. This study provides a facile way to synthesize β-NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ /Er 3+ crystals with predictable morphology and size, and tunable luminescence properties, which can be applicable for other rare earth fluoride compounds.

Using a solid-state technique under low temperature conditions, Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped Bi 2 Mo 2 O 9 phosphors with different concentrations were prepared, exhibiting excellent green up-conversion luminescence property. A thorough investigation was conducted on the phase structure, optical transition, up-conversion luminescence, and down-shifting luminescence properties of the prepared samples. Bi 2 Mo 2 O 9 : Er 3+ /Yb 3+ phosphors excited at 381, 980, and 1550 nm showed strong green fluorescence together with very faint red emission. The mechanism of up-conversion luminescence and its capacity for temperature sensing were examined under the excitation of various wavelengths. Under 980 nm excitation, the maximal relative and absolute sensitivities were determined to be 1.107%K − 1 and 0.756%K − 1 at 303 K and 513 K, respectively. Furthermore, the Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters of Er 3+ in Bi 2 Mo 2 O 9 : Er 3+ /Yb 3+ phosphors were calculated using the diffuse reflectance spectra and fluorescence lifetime of Er 3+ . In addition, material was combined with polyacrylic acid to make an anti-counterfeiting pattern. The results indicate that Bi 2 Mo 2 O 9 : Er 3+ /Yb 3+ phosphor is an excellent green phosphor with optical temperature measurement function, and it also has certain applications in the field of anti-counterfeiting.

In response to the urgent demand for windows with multi-mode self-calibrated temperature feedback operating over a wide range in extreme environments, herein, Pr 3+ –Er 3+ co-doped Y 2 Zr 2 O 7 (YZO) transparent ceramics were developed. After annealing treatment to remove defects, these ceramics exhibit high transparency and temperature-dependent wide-range photoluminescence, in which the in-line transmittance is up to 77.8% at 760 nm (theoretical limit is 78%), and the luminescence band spans blue to red. Furthermore, based on the luminescence intensity ratio technology, a multi-mode temperature sensing window using highly transparent YZO:Pr/Er ceramics was designed. The developed photothermal window shows relatively high sensitivity, in which absolute sensitivity ( S a ) and relative sensitivity ( S r ) reached 0.0105 K −1 at 363 K and 1.295% K −1 at 301 K, respectively. The developed thermometer could provide a reference for self-calibrated thermometer window, and its wide spectral operating range ensures the reliability of temperature measurement, which has the potential to be used in some extreme conditions.

Exploring novel oxysalt compounds remains significant due to their affordability and versatile applications, such as serving as laser crystals, piezoelectric crystals, frequency-doubling crystals, and luminescent materials. Specifically, this study introduces a new near-single green upconversion luminescent Ca 9 (VO 4 ) 7 : Yb 3+ /Er 3+ material, synthesized through high-temperature solid-phase methods. When subjected to 980 nm near-infrared laser irradiation, the Ca 9 (VO 4 ) 7 : 0.3 Yb 3+ , 0.02 Er 3+ phosphor demonstrates robust green luminescence at 531 nm ( 2 H 11/2 → 4 I 15/2 ) and 558 nm ( 4 S 3/2 → 4 I 15/2 ), accompanied by faint red luminescence at 665 nm ( 4 F 9/2 → 4 I 15/2 ). The optimal doping concentrations for Yb 3+ and Er 3+ ions, yielding the highest upconversion luminescence intensity, are determined to be 0.3 and 0.02, respectively. The investigation elucidates the upconversion luminescence mechanism through the downward shift spectrum in photoluminescence and the pumping power dependence of upconversion green-red luminescence. The primary excitation pathway identified for the upconversion process in Ca 9 Y(VO 4 ) 7 : 0.3 Yb 3+ , 0.02 Er 3+ involves Yb 3+ ( 2 F 5/2 ) + Er 3+ ( 4 I 11/2 ) → Yb 3+ ( 2 F 7/2 ) + Er 3+ ( 4 F 7/2 ). This research contributes to the exploration of new materials, injecting vitality into modern industries and production processes.

Thermally enhanced upconversion luminescence (UCL) materials have obvious advantages in the various fields of optical temperature sensing, anti-counterfeiting, and display. Here, we report a novel thermal enhancement UCL phosphor of Ca 2 Gd 8 Si 6 O 26 :Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ (CGSO:Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ ). Benefiting from the thermally enhanced phonon-assisted effect, anti-Stokes sideband excitation of Yb 3+ , energy transfer from Yb 3+ to Er 3+ , and thermal population from selective energy levels of Er 3+ are promoted with increasing temperature, which contributes to the thermal enhancement UCL of 4 F 7/2 → 4 I 15/2 , 2 H 11/2 → 4 I 15/2 , and 4 I 9/2 → 4 I 15/2 radiation transitions of Er 3+ ions. In addition, the rarely thermal enhancement of near infrared emission at 870 nm observed may be attributed to the Yb 3+ -induced effect. Furthermore, thermal quenching occurs for 4 S 3/2 → 4 I 15/2 and 4 F 9/2 → 4 I 15/2 transitions due to thermally enhanced multiphonon relaxation and thermal population. The combination of thermal enhancement and thermal quenching effect, the ratiometric optical thermometer is constructed in the wide temperature range 303–723 K by leveraging of the thermally coupled energy levels 2 H 11/2 and 4 S 3/2 of Er 3+ . This optical thermometer shows excellent temperature measurement performances with a maximum relative sensitivity of 1.1 × 10 −2 K −1 at 303 K and high repeatability of 99 %. These findings indicate that CGSO:Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ phosphors with thermally enhanced UCL have great potential application for temperature sensing.
