As a natural small molecule monomer widely found in various traditional Chinese herbs, emodin has garnered substantial attention due to its pharmacological properties. Its widespread exploration for application such as growth enhancement, immune modulation, and antimicrobial activity in aquaculture. In the present study, our focus centers on investigate the anti-spring viremia of carp virus (SVCV) activity of emodin, thereby facilitate the development of commercially viable methods for the prevention and treatment of SVCV infection. We assessed the inhibitory effects of emodin against SVCV through both in vitro and in vivo paradigms. In the in vitro assay, cells were firstly infected with emodin mixed with SVCV to impact of emodin on viral replication, apoptosis, and mitochondrial depolarization. Notably, the results underscore that emodin, at a concentration of 16 μM, engenders a remarkable 99.99% suppression of SVCV infection. Interestedly, it distinctly influences the internalization of viral particles into the cells as well as modulate the antiviral response. Furthermore, in the in vivo assay, zebrafish ( Danio rerio ) fed with an emodin-supplemented commercial diet exhibited a notably elevated survival rate, surpassing that SVCV-exposed group which fed with only commercial diet (up to 22%), a significant reduction in viral load in host was also discerned. Emodin supplementation elicited substantial upregulation of host antiviral related genes, such as interferon-φ ( IFN-φ ), retinoic acid inducible gene I ( RIG-I ), and IFN-stimulated gene product 15 ( ISG15 ), by 4.98-, 3.97-, and 7.42-fold on day 7, respectively. In summation, our results indicate that emodin has anti-SVCV activity, and the confluence of emodin's well-established extraction protocol, environmental friendliness, and multiple bioactivities collectively predict it has the potential for commercial application as an antiviral disease additive in aquaculture.

Collagen is used in medical dressings because of its high hydrophilicity, low immunogenicity, excellent biocompatibility, and degradability. These features can promote cell proliferation and platelet agglomeration. Herein, we studied the preparation of gel dressing by using silver carp skin collagen and bovine collagen as raw materials. Their properties and the application effects of collagen gel dressing were evaluated and compared. The centrifugal stability, rheology, and water-loss rate of silver carp skin collagen gel (SCG) and bovine tendon collagen gel (CTG) were determined. Results showed that the two gels were stable, and SCG had better rheology and ductility than CTG. However, the denaturation temperature and water-retention rate of SCG were slightly lower than those of CTG. Two collagen gels were used in the burn-repair experiment of KM mice. Results showed that the SCG and CTG were consistent with the wound-repair effect of commercially available products for shallow II-degree scald and deep II-degree scald. In the superficial shallow II scald experiment, SCG had a faster healing rate in the first 8 days and a shorter recovery time than CTG. In the deep II-degree scald experiment, the wound-healing rate of SCG on the 14th day reached 94.24%, which was 2 days faster than the recovery time of CTG. Moreover, the skin after wound healing was shallower than the scar produced after CTG treatment. Therefore, SCG had the potential to be used as the medical dressing.

Biochar materials with low cost and desired properties have gradually been widely applied in multitudinous domains, especially in radioactive wastewater remediation. Multi-heteroatom doping is a useful method for the design of doping biochar with uranium immobilization of excellent performance. Herein, multi-heteroatom self-doped microporous carbon was designed and synthesized via extraction and carbonization of collagen by potassium compound assisted, which was extracted by low-cost fish scales as the precursor and tested for high-performance uranium immobilization . The multi-heteroatom self-doped biochar exhibited the maximum saturated adsorption capacity of 142.06 mg/g for U(VI) at pH = 5, reflecting the significant increase in available adsorption sites from multi-heteroatom doped. The strong complexation process was proposed for the mutual effect between U(VI) and multi-heteroatom doped biochar, where abundant functional groups (oxygen and amino) and sulfur metal sites groups were the primary active sites. The design of multi-heteroatom self-doped biochar provided a universal and effective method for purifying U(VI) from wastewater systems.

The aim of this study was to investigate the phase behavior and structural properties of fish gelatin complex coacervation with carboxylated chitosan as a function of pH by varying the amount of carboxylated chitosan added (0–0.25%, w/v) while keeping the fish gelatin concentration constant at 0.667% (w/v). Zeta potential indicated that electrostatic interaction drove the complex coalescence of fish gelatin and carboxylated chitosan to form soluble or insoluble complexes. The turbidity of the fish gelatin-carboxylated chitosan complex system was greatest at a carboxylated chitosan concentration of 0.2%. UV and fluorescence spectroscopy indicated that the carboxylated chitosan changed the tertiary conformation of fish gelatin. Circular dichroism showed that complexation of fish gelatin with carboxylated chitosan resulted in a shift from the α-helix to the β-sheet structure of fish gelatin. In particular, at pH 5, the fish gelatin complexed with carboxylated chitosan had a disordered structure. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy of the composite coacervates both investigated that electrostatic interaction between the two replaced molecular interaction within the carboxylated chitosan to form a new lamellar porous structure. These findings may in future enable the use of fish gelatin-carboxylated chitosan complex systems in the design of new food matrices.

BACKGROUND Fish gelatin (FG) has multifunctional properties similar to mammalian gelatin (MG), and it has been recognized as the optimal alternative to MG. While its poor surface-active and gelling properties significantly limit its application values, glycosylation has been successfully used to increase surface-active properties of FG, but the influence of ultrasonic-associated glycosylation (UAG) on the gelling and structural characteristics of FG is still rarely reported. This article explores UAG (100–200 W, 0.5–1 h) with κ-carrageenan (κC) on the functional properties (emulsifying, gelling and rheological properties) and structural characteristics of FG. RESULTS The longer time and higher power of ultrasonics accelerated the glycosylation reaction with an increase in glycosylation degree and browning index values. Compared with original FG, FG–κC mixture and bovine gelatin, UAG-modified FG possessed higher emulsification activity index, emulsion stability index, gel strength, hardness and melting temperature values. Among them, gelatin modified by appropriate ultrasonic conditions (200 W, 0.5 h) had the highest emulsifying and gelling properties. Rheological results showed that UAG contributed to the gelation process of gelatin with advanced gelation time and endowed it with high viscosity. Structural analysis indicated that UAG promoted κC to link with FG by the formation of covalent and hydrogen bonds, restricting more bound and immobilized water in the gels, exhibiting higher gelling properties. CONCLUSION This work showed that UAG with κC is a promising method to produce high gelling and emulsifying properties of FG that could replace MG. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Herbicide pollution is persistent, which not only has a negative impact on individual organisms, but also may alter population dynamics and stability of interspecific relationships. Cladocerans, an important part of zooplankton, are often simultaneously exposed to environmental pollutants and predation risk in the aquatic environment. To evaluate the combined effects of atrazine and fish predation risk on the population traits of cladocerans, we exposed Daphnia pulex to different concentrations of atrazine (0, 0.05, 0.10, and 1.0 mg L−1) with or without fish (Rhodeus ocellatus) kairomone, recorded the key population traits, and fitted Gaussian model to population dynamics. Results showed that fish kairomone increased the population density at the end of the experiment and resting eggs production, and tended to decrease the total biomass and the average dry weight per individual of D. pulex. Atrazine reduced the total biomass, the average dry weight per individual, and resting eggs production of D. pulex populations. Atrazine also decreased the population density at the end of the experiment of D. pulex in fish kairomone treatment, and attenuated the promoting effect of fish kairomone on resting eggs production and the reduction of the total biomass. The findings highlighted the importance of considering the combined impact of environmental pollutants and predation risks on zooplankton populations.

A novel smart sensor for the rapid and label-free detection of benzocaine has been developed based on the combination of photonic crystal (PC) and molecular imprinting polymer (MIP) techniques. A molecularly imprinted photonic crystal (MIPC) hydrogel film was prepared via a non-covalent, self-assembly approach with a PC mould. With a highly ordered inverse opal structure, the resulting benzocaine MIPC exhibited high sensitivity, smart specificity, quick response times and good regeneration abilities. It can give rise to a readable optical signal and color change upon binding with benzocaine, with a detection limit of 16.5 μg mL−1. The sensor has been successfully used to visually estimate benzocaine concentrations in fish samples. In comparison with HPLC, the developed MIPC sensor has shown satisfactory accuracy in terms of results. It has great potential for on-site screening and the visual detection of trace benzocaine in real samples.

A fluorescent probe based on CdTe/CdS quantum dots coated with molecularly imprinted polymer shell was designed. The fluorescence emission of the probe was at 622 nm. The probe presented selective adsorption for malachite green and the adsorption caused fluorescence quenching due to fluorescence resonance energy transfer. A linear relationship ranging from 0.05 to 10 μmol·L−1 between relative fluorescence quenching intensities and malachite green concentrations was obtained with a detection limit of 0.029 μmol·L−1. The fluorescent probe was successfully applied to the determination of malachite green in fish with recoveries ranging from 93.3 to 107.7%.

The purpose of this study was to fabricate a low-immunogenicity fish collagen (FC) and bioactive nanohydroxyapatite (n-HA) enhanced poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) nanofibrous membrane for guided bone regeneration (GBR) via electrospinning. The physicochemical properties and morphology study revealed that FC and n-HA particles were homogeneously dispersed in the PLGA fibrous matrix. Notably, the formation of enhanced polymeric chain network due to the interaction between FC and PLGA significantly improved the tensile strength of the PLGA membrane. The incorporation of FC altered the degradation behavior of fibers and accelerated the degradation rate of the PLGA-based membranes. Moreover, the membranes exhibited favorable cytocompatibility with bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and human gingiva fibroblasts (HGF) cells. More importantly, the optimized membrane satisfied the requirements of the ‘Biological evaluation of medical devices’ during the incipient biosafety evaluation. All the results indicate that this composite fibrous membrane exhibits significant potential for guided bone or tissue regeneration.

The mass transfer efficiency and structural stability of the electrode are critical for industrialized water electrolysis operations. Herein, the biomimicry-inspired design of Ni3N/FeNi3N/NF nanoarrays with a fish scale-like structure, which endowed the Ni3N/FeNi3N/NF nanoarrays with rapid infiltration of aqueous solution within 60 ms and 169° bubble contact angle, is demonstrated. The optimal Ni3N/FeNi3N/NF sample displayed catalytic activity with hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) overpotentials of only 48 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and 102 mV at 100 mA cm−2. Similarly, the overpotential of the anodic-coupled urea oxidation reaction (UOR) was only 1.3 V at 10 mA cm−2 and 1.35 V at 100 mA cm−2. Besides, the small impact resulting from the rapid bubble extraction within the Ni3N/FeNi3N/NF nanoarrays ensured excellent HER cycling stability over 100 h at a current density of 50 mA cm−2. The further scale-up experiment suggests the industrialization prospects of the prepared Ni3N/FeNi3N/NF electrocatalysts.

Histamine, an important safety index for aquatic products, can also be used as a freshness indicator for red-fleshed fish. In this work, magnetic graphene oxide (Fe3O4@GO, MGO) was applied to immobilize diamine oxidase (DAO) through a method of adsorption and covalent bonding. Under the optimized conditions, magnetic DAO prepared by adsorption immobilization had a higher enzyme activity than that of free enzyme, which was selected for the sensor construction. A colorimetric biosensor based on magnetic DAO induced etching of gold nanorods (AuNRs) was developed for the detection of histamine in fish. The developed biosensor showed an excellent response toward histamine with a low detection limit of 1.23 μM and had negligible interference from other diamines. With increasing the histamine concentration, the AuNRs after the reaction exhibited colors ranging from dark green to blue-green, blue, purple, red, and colorless. The etching induced multicolor change of AuNRs indicated the presence of different contents of histamine in mackerel during storage, and was consistent with the overall change in the content of the total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N). Thus, it was indicated that the proposed colorimetric biosensor with a naked-eye-detectable readout has a great potential to evaluate the freshness of red-fleshed fish high in histamine. Keywords:histamine;colorimetric biosensor;magnetic diamine oxidase;etching of gold nanorods;fish freshness
