Single-atom transition metal-based nitrogen-doped carbon (M−N x −C) is regarded as high-efficiency and cost-effectiveness alternatives to replace noble metal catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in renewable energy storage and conversion devices. In this work, rich FeCo dual-single atoms were efficiently entrapped into N -doped carbon nanocages (FeCo DSAs-NCCs) by simple pyrolysis of the bimetallic precursors doped zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), as affirmed by a series of characterizations. The graphitization degree of the N -doping carbon substrate was regulated by modulating the pyrolysis temperature and the types of the metal salts. The typical catalyst substantially improved the alkaline ORR performance, with the onset potential ( E onset ) of 0.99 V ( vs . RHE) and half-wave potential ( E 1/2 ) of 0.88 V ( vs . RHE). Ultimately, the catalyst-assembled Zn-air battery possessed a higher open-circuit voltage of 1.501 V, larger power density of 123.7 mW cm −2 , and outstanding durability for 150 h. This study provides a guide on developing ORR catalysts for electrochemical energy conversion and storage technology.

Here, Fe, Co-layered double hydroxide and polyaniline composites onto nickel foam (NF) (FeCo-LDH/PANI) were fabricated via one-step co-electrodeposition method. The test results indicate the co-existence of the amorphous structure and the smaller size of crystal district with more defects in optimal FeCo-LDH/PANI. Importantly, it is found that there are more defects in FeCo-LDH/PANI compared to that of FeCo-LDH possibly attributed to the local etching of H + released from the polymerization of aniline. Benefitting from the numerous defects, higher electrochemical surface area (ECSA), lower charge-transfer resistance and electron interaction, the optimized FeCo-LDH/PANI needs the overpotentials of 104, 246, 285 and 323 mV vs RHE for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to achieve 10 and 100 mA cm −2 , and shows desirable stability. Noticeably, the optimal FeCo-LDH/PANI requires a cell voltage of 1.53 V to drive 10 mA cm −2 for the whole water splitting.

Efficient methods for preparing carbon nanotube (CNT)-confined metal catalysts are of great significance for electrocatalysis. Hence, in this study, Fe and Co promoters were added to the precursors of commercial carbon black and melamine to form N -doped CNTs confined bimetallic catalysts (FeCo@ N -CNTs) via in situ pyrolysis. The FeCo@ N -CNT catalysts exhibited a bamboo-like morphology with FeCo alloy nanoparticles encapsulated in the CNTs and high activity toward the oxygen reduction reaction, with a half-wave potential of 0.864 mV, higher than that of commercial Pt/C (0.827 mV) in alkaline solutions. The catalytic performance is attributable to the synergistic effects between the FeCo alloy and N -doped CNT structure. Moreover, the confinement of the FeCo nanoparticles inside the CNTs imparted the prepared catalysts with resistance to methanol poisoning and long-term stability. This versatile method of synthesizing CNTs directly from carbon black provides a new strategy for preparing high-performance non-precious-metal-based N -doped CNT catalysts for practical fuel cell applications.

It is feasible to improve the photodegradation efficiency of organic pollutants by metal-organic frameworks (MOF)-based semiconductors via ligand engineering. In this work, three (Fe/Co)-XBDC-based MOFs were synthesized by introducing different ortho-functional groups X (X = –H, –NO 2 , –NH 2 ) next to the carboxyl group of the organic ligand (i.e., terephthalic acid). The analysis focused on the influence mechanism of the adjacent functional group effect of the ligand on the physicochemical properties of the material and the actual photodegradation activity of TC . Multiple pieces of evidences suggested that the differences in electron-induced and photocharge-transfer mechanisms of the above ortho functional groups affect the crystal morphology and photocatalytic activity of FeCo-MOF during pyrolysis . Interestingly, (Fe/Co)–NH 2 BDC exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity under neutral conditions. The results of density functional theory show that the introduction of a strong donor-NH 2 group can enhance light absorption and act as an “electron pump” to supply electrons to the iron center, accelerating the separation and efficient transport of photogenerated carriers on the ligand-metal bridge. In conclusion, this study is a proposal for a strategy of structural regulation for the enhancement of the catalytic activity of (Fe/Co)-MOFs in the photodegradation of TC.

1-Octen-3-ol is a characteristic volatile organic compound released from moldy wheat. Therefore, the development of high-performance gas sensors for 1-octen-3-ol detection is of great significance for ensuring grain safety by enabling real-time monitoring of wheat quality. However, substantial challenges remain, including poor selectivity and insufficient stability. To address these limitations, this study designed and successfully synthesized a three-dimensional nest-like Tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) structure decorated with FeCo nanoalloys. By modulating the loading amount of the iron (Fe) cobalt (Co) alloy, we achieved precise tuning of surface oxygen vacancies and facilitated efficient electron transfer within the nanocomposite, resulting in a significantly enhanced gas response. The optimized 1.5FeCo@WO 3 sensor exhibited a high response value of 12.68 toward 100 ppm 1-octen-3-ol, along with superior selectivity and excellent long-term stability. Systematic material characterizations, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analyses, confirmed that the composite possesses a high specific surface area, abundant oxygen vacancies, and a robust interfacial electronic interaction between the FeCo alloy and the WO 3 matrix. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations were integrated into the mechanistic analysis. Consequently, this work yields a promising sensor candidate for the early warning of wheat diseases and proposes a material design strategy for developing economical, high-sensitivity gas sensors for agricultural applications.

Bimetallic MOF materials (FeCo-MOF) were prepared with a simple hydrothermal method. • MXene/HCNTs and FeCo-MOF have synergistic effects on electrocatalytic NO 2 − oxidation. • This sensor exhibits low detection limit (0.154 μM) and wide linear range for NO 2 − . • MXene/HCNTs/FeCo-MOF/GCE has excellent selectivity, reproducibility and stability. • Successfully applied to analyze NO 2 − in foods (milk, sausage, and bottled water). Nitrite is a common food additive, however, studies have shown that long-term intake of large amounts of nitrite can pose significant health hazards to humans, so the accurate determination of nitrite content in food is of great importance. In this paper, an electrochemical sensor exhibiting remarkable sensitivity and selectivity for NO 2 − detection was successfully constructed using a composite material (MXene/HCNTs/FeCo-MOF), using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) to characterize the MXene/HCNTs/FeCo-MOF, and investigating the electrocatalytic performance of MXene/HCNTs/FeCo-MOF-modified electrode for NO 2 − by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), the results revealed MXene/HCNTs/FeCo-MOF/GCE exhibited both an extensive linear range (0.5–300 μM) and a minimal detection limit (0.154 μM). Meanwhile, the modified electrode was also successfully realized for detecting NO 2 − in food (milk, sausage and bottled water), which has potential applications. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane filtration is extensively employed in the treatment of fluoride-containing wastewater due to low cost and operational simplicity. However, it still faces the challenges of unsatisfactory permeability and anti-pollution performance. In the present work, a novel PVDF ultrafiltration membrane modified with FeCo/BC (FeCo/BC@PVDF) that exhibits outstanding catalytic activity was fabricated via the non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) method, which further enables the in-situ coupling between the as-fabricated membrane and peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The performance evaluation exhibits that the pure water flux and rejection rate of FeCo/BC@PVDF ultrafiltration membrane increased from 235.91 L⋅m −2 ⋅h −1 and 51.63 % to 445.61 L⋅m −2 ⋅h −1 and 90.71 %, and the irreversible pollution rate has decreased from 37.69 % to 17.67 % in in-situ coupling PMS systems. Meanwhile, the characterization results of XRD, FTIR, SEM, XPS and water contact angle (WCA) confirmed that the outstanding permeability and anti-pollution performance were attributed to good pore distribution, hydrophilicity and catalytic performance. In addition, the pollution model fitting, extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory and heterogeneous experiments were used to further understand the anti-pollution mechanism of FeCo/BC@PVDF, and the results reveal that pollution mode of ultrafiltration membrane has changed from multiple contamination behaviors to easily rinsed cake layer contamination because of the in-situ degradation effect of SO₄⁻•, O₂⁻• and •OH on sodium p-perfluorous nonenoxybenzenesulfonate (OBS). This research provides a new idea for simultaneously improving the permeability and anti-pollution performance of PVDF ultrafiltration membranes in the field of fluorine-containing wastewater treatment.

An atomically dispersed FeCo-NC material with the 3D flower-like morphology was used as a unique substrate for the controllable deposition of ultrasmall NiFe layered double hydroxide nanodots (termed as NiFe-NDs) to simultaneously promote the sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The size-limiting growth of NiFe-NDs (~4.0 nm in diameter) was realized via the confinement of the 3D flower-like mesoporous structure and the rich N/O functionality of FeCo-NC. Benefiting from the distinctive structure with the simultaneously maximum exposure of both OER and ORR active sites, the NiFe-ND/FeCo-NC composite showed an ORR halfwave potential of 0.85 V and an OER potential of 1.66 V in 0.1 mol L −1 KOH at 10.0 mA cm −2 . In-situ Raman analysis suggested the activity of OER was derived from the Ni sites on NiFe-ND/FeCo-NC. Moreover, the NiFe-ND/FeCo-NC-assembled Zn-air battery (ZAB) exhibited a very small discharge- charge voltage gap of 0.87 V at 20 mA cm −2 and robust cycling stability. Furthermore, the NiFe-ND/FeCo-NC composite was also applicable for fabricating all-solid-state ZAB to power wearable electronics with superior cycling stability under deformation. Our work could enlighten a new applicable branch of atomically dispersed metal-nitrogen-carbon materials as unique substrates for fabricating multifunctional electrocatalysts.

Developing high-performance and low-cost electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is essential for hydrogen production. Herein, we prepared Zn,S-incorporated Fe,Co layered double hydroxide (ZnCoFeS–LDH) nanosheets on nickel foam via a two-step hydrothermal reaction. The attractive two-dimensional (2D) nanosheet morphology with ultrathin thickness offers abundant active sites, promotes the adsorption and desorption of intermediates on the surface, and also facilitates mass transportation. The electronic structure of ZnCoFeS–LDH was modified, which thus improves their conductivity, offers high-valence iron ions (Fe3+), and therefore intrinsically enhances their electrocatalytic properties. In particular, the constructed crystalline/amorphous interfaces benefit electron transfer between different phases. As a proof of concept, we examined the electrocatalytic performances of ZnCoFeS–LDH nanostructures to both the OER and UOR. As a result, the ZnCoFeS–LDH nanosheets exhibit excellent catalytic OER activity, with low overpotentials of 202, 217, 238, and 261 mV to achieve current densities of 10, 20, 50, and 100 mA cm–2, respectively, which are remarkably enhanced in comparison with that of commercial RuO2. Furthermore, they also demonstrate outstanding durability after long-term (48 h) and cycling (5000 cycles) measurements. Moreover, the ZnCoFeS–LDH nanosheets also possess superior UOR activity. The potentials were measured to be as low as 1.313, 1.334, 1.366, and 1.398 V to reach current densities of 10, 20, 50, and 100 mA cm–2, respectively, with high long-term stability after 20 h.

As an efficient non-precious metal catalyst, FeCo alloy was widely used in various catalytic reactions. Owing to the organic pollution in ecosystem, it has attracted much attention in heterogeneous Fenton reaction. Unfortunately, their application was restricted by slow process and high leaching. To overcome these shortcomings simultaneously, herein, FeCo@nitrogen-doped graphitized carbon (NGC) core/shell composite was synthesized via one-step annealing Prussian blue analogue. In microwave assisted Fenton reaction (MAFR), malachite green (MG) degradation time was only 2.5 min, and the rate constant was 2.0 min −1 , about 20 times higher than heterogeneous Fenton reaction. Synergistic index was 3.88, meaning extra 288% of removal efficiency was yield in peroxymonosulfate (PMS)+MW+FeCo@NGC system. The effect of microwave-activation was divided into thermal effect and non-thermal effect. SO 4 ·− produced through thermal effect occupied 73% ± 8% of total number. The contribution of thermal effect was estimated to be 65% ± 7% for MG removal. Non-thermal effect was clarified by hotspots effect theory. Due to protection of NGC shell, Co 3+/2+ leaching in composite was only one-tenth of pure FeCo. FeCo@NGC composite could be rapidly recycled due to ferromagnetic behavior with saturation magnetization of 98.7 emu/g. 89.3% of degradation efficiency was maintained after the 5 th cycle.

Hollow microsphere absorbents hold great potential for lightweight and multi-band compatible design due to their inherent low density and thermal conductivity, but it remains a great challenge to rationally control the microstructures to achieve an optimal balance of low density, high mechanical strength, impedance matching, attenuation ability, and thermal performance. In this work, bimetallic alloys and glass are selected as the model materials for the functional and supporting shells to construct lightweight yet robust hollow microspheres. The rational design and highly efficient realization of the composition and miscibility control of the bimetallic alloy are first emphasized. An in-depth investigation is conducted on the effects of metal type and component compatibility on the microstructure of the structural units (SU), and further on the electromagnetic and thermal performances. The results confirm the necessity and effectiveness of regulating the integrity and microstructure of the electromagnetic and thermal networks via alloying-induced migration and aggregation behavior control. The optimized product exhibits comprehensive advantages of being simultaneously thin (1.69 mm), wide (5.20 GHz), light (0.81 g cm −3 ), strong (−23.8 dB), high mechanical strength (91.87% survival rate at 20 MPa) and low thermal conductivity (0.063 W m −1 K −1 ), indicating excellent radar-infrared stealth capabilities and structural stability.

A green and facile strategy for preparing high-efficiency flame retardants is highly desirable given today's increasingly environmentally friendly requirements. In this study, novel bioderived cross-linked polyphosphazene microspheres (PHDTs) were synthesized through polycondensation with tannic acid and 4,4′-dihydroxybiphenyl as co-monomers and decorated by layered double hydroxide (PHDT@FeCo-LDH) to improve the flame retardancy of epoxy resin (EP). Comparison with pure EP revealed that the EP containing 4.0 wt% PHDT@FeCo-LDH exhibited the highest LOI of 29.7 and a UL-94 V-0 rating. Furthermore, the peak heat release rate , total heat release, and total smoke release of the modified EP were significantly reduced and were superior to most of its previously reported counterparts. The PHDTs could be regarded as an all-in-one bioderived intumescent flame retardant for catalyzing the formation of the highly graphitized char layer of a phosphorus-containing cross-linking network in the EP matrix. The transformation of the LDH shell into refractory oxides on the surface of the matrix during combustion further strengthen the structure and thermal stability of the char layer, which effectively inhibited the release of toxic and flammable gases. The flame retardant performance of the modified microspheres was mainly attributed to catalytic charring, free-radical scavenging, and physical barrier effects. Notably, the mechanical properties of the EP composites were improved to meet the requirements of industrial application. This work provides a new methodology for the preparation of high-performance EP composites.
