Exploring efficient and durable non-noble metal catalysts toward oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER) is of practical significance in advancing Zn-air batteries. Herein, we introduce a three-dimensional (3D) bifunctional electrocatalyst (Fe/Ni@NSC) consisting of N, S-dual doped mesoporous carbon nanosheets/carbon nanotubes embedded with abundant FeS/FeNi nanoparticles and Fe/Ni-N x sites by integrating rod-like ZIF-L@S-g-C 3 N 4 with Fe/Ni-phen complex and subsequent pyrolysis. The 3D structure not only offers a high surface area for active sites but also accelerates O 2 transport/charge transfer. Leveraging the synergistic effect of the 3D porous carbon network and multiple active sites, Fe/Ni@NSC exhibited outstanding activities in both ORR (half-wave potential, 0.868 V) and OER (overpotential, 317 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ), indicating a low potential gap of 0.679 V, outperforming the Pt/C + RuO 2 benchmarks (0.695 V). The Zn-air batteries based on Fe/Ni@NSC achieved a promising open circuit voltage (1.47 V), peak power density (172.59 mW cm −2 ), as well as long-term cycling stability (370 h). Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations also demonstrated that the interfacial electronic interaction between FeS and FeNi effectively boosted the bifunctional catalytic performance for ORR/OER. This study lays the foundation for designing low-cost and efficient 3D structure non-noble metal catalysts for more energy conversion and storage devices.

Carbon-based free-standing catalysts can be directly used in rechargeable zinc–air batteries while maintaining a high mass transfer level, making them highly promising as electrodes to catalyze oxygen reduction reaction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER). However, the existing complex preparation processes and limited conductive pathways remain challenges for their further application. Herein, a FeS/Fe3C nanoparticle-embedded and graphene nanosheet-doped carbon catalyst with a free-standing and amorphous porous carbon structure (FeS/Fe3C@CP) is easily synthesized by a simple solute precipitation strategy, in which the well-connected porous carbon and composite graphene nanosheets construct a conductive network extending in all directions. The result of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) highlights the lower resistance of FeS/Fe3C@CP in the electron transfer process than that of the electrode synthesized by electrostatic spinning using the same raw material, which confirms that electrons are rapidly transported in this conductive network. The obtained FeS/Fe3C@CP possesses bifunctional catalytic activity and exhibits a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.89 V (vs. RHE) for the ORR and a potential of 1.40 V at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 (E10) for the OER. Further, in liquid ZAB applications, the FeS/Fe3C@CP exhibits a power density of 125 mW cm−2, which is better than that of a commercial Pt/C and RuO2 mixture. DFT analysis shows that the ORR adsorption/desorption process occurring on iron atoms in the FeS/Fe3C heterojunction has a smaller energy barrier than that on single FeS or Fe3C nanoparticles. This research lays a practical foundation for the design and synthesis of free-standing carbon catalysts with rich conductive networks.

Background The infection and spread of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) pose a serious threat to the global pig industry, and inhibiting the viral infection process is a promising treatment strategy. Nanomaterials can interact with viruses and have attracted much attention due to their large specific surface area and unique physicochemical properties. Ferrous sulfide nanoparticles (FeS NPs) with the characteristics of high reactivity, large specific surface area, and low cost are widely applied to environmental remediation, catalysis, energy storage and medicine. However, there is no report on the application of FeS NPs in the antiviral field. In this study, gelatin stabilized FeS nanoparticles (Gel-FeS NPs) were large-scale synthesized rapidly by the one-pot method of co-precipitation of Fe 2+ and S 2‒ . Results The prepared Gel-FeS NPs exhibited good stability and dispersibility with an average diameter of 47.3 nm. Additionally, they were characterized with good biocompatibility and high antiviral activity against PRRSV proliferation in the stages of adsorption, invasion, and replication. Conclusions We reported for the first time the virucidal and antiviral activity of Gel-FeS NPs. The synthesized Gel-FeS NPs exhibited good dispersibility and biocompatibility as well as effective inhibition on PRRSV proliferation. Moreover, the Fe 2+ released from degraded Gel-FeS NPs still displayed an antiviral effect, demonstrating the advantage of Gel-FeS NPs as an antiviral nanomaterial compared to other nanomaterials. This work highlighted the antiviral effect of Gel-FeS NPs and provided a new strategy for ferrous-based nanoparticles against PRRSV. Graphical Abstract

This study demonstrated the prolonged benefits of polyvinyl-coated calcium peroxide (PVA@CP) in Fe(II)/nFeS mediated Fenton-like reaction. PVA@CP was prepared by a coating of PVA on calcium peroxide (CP) and synthesized nano-sized iron sulfide (nFeS) was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) elemental mapping, X-ray diffractometry (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and Fourier transmission infrared (FTIR) techniques. Trichloroethylene (TCE) degradation in various oxic environments (H 2 O 2 , CP, or PVA@CP) was investigated using Fe(II)/nFeS, and the slowest rate constant of 0.031 M −1 min −1 with 91 % TCE removal highlighted the long-lasting effects of PVA@CP. The effect of initial solution pH revealed that the acidic condition was most favorable. PVA@CP system accumulated the least amount (6.34 mg/L) of Fe(III) than H 2 O 2 and CP systems. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and scavenging tests highlighted that free hydroxyl radicals (HO free ) contributed dominantly in H 2 O 2 system while both free and surface-bound species participated well in CP and PVA@CP systems. Moreover, the insight mechanism of regenerated Fe(II) on the nFeS surface was explored by XPS. Both oxidation and reduction of sulfur were discussed and declared that S(-II) was responsible for regenerating Fe(II). The recycling sample checked the reusability of nFeS, and 98.8 % TCE removal in actual groundwater emphasized that PVA@CP/Fe(II)/nFeS is a viable technique. In conclusion, the PVA@CP/Fe(II)/nFeS system is highly recommended for long-lasting remediation of TCE contaminated groundwater.

In this study, a novel composite composed of iron monosulfide nanoparticles (FeS NPs) and titanate nanotubes (TNTs) was hydrothermally synthesized. Characterizations revealed the encapsulation and homogenous dispersion of FeS NPs into the interlayers of TNTs. Significant performance in removal of aqueous total Cr was acquired by efficient conversion of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) on FeS and simultaneous adsorption of Cr(III) on TNTs. Moreover, the high activity of FeS-TNTs in reduction of Cr(VI) can maintain at high oxicity or alkalinity of its solution. The synergistic effect between FeS and TNTs was derived from sheltering of FeS NPs from their self-aggregation, O 2 -oxidation and the affinity of Cr(III) to TNTs. The unique properties, e.g. the solid acidity, the hollow and interlayered configuration of TNTs played important roles in high activity, good stability and reusability of FeS-TNTs.

Non-aqueous sodium-ion batteries (SiBs) are a viable electrochemical energy storage system for grid storage. However, the practical development of SiBs is hindered mainly by the sluggish kinetics and interfacial instability of positive-electrode active materials, such as polyanion-type iron-based sulfates, at high voltage. Here, to circumvent these issues, we proposed the multiscale interface engineering of Na 2.26 Fe 1.87 (SO 4 ) 3 , where bulk heterostructure and exposed crystal plane were tuned to improve the Na-ion storage performance. Physicochemical characterizations and theoretical calculations suggested that the heterostructure of Na 6 Fe(SO 4 ) 4 phase facilitated ionic kinetics by densifying Na-ion migration channels and lowering energy barriers. The (11-2) plane of Na 2.26 Fe 1.87 (SO 4 ) 3 promoted the adsorption of the electrolyte solution ClO 4 − anions and fluoroethylene carbonate molecules, which formed an inorganic-rich Na-ion conductive interphase at the positive electrode. When tested in combination with a presodiated FeS/carbon-based negative electrode in laboratory- scale single-layer pouch cell configuration, the Na 2.26 Fe 1.87 (SO 4 ) 3 -based positive electrode enables an initial discharge capacity of about 83.9 mAh g −1 , an average cell discharge voltage of 2.35 V and a specific capacity retention of around 97% after 40 cycles at 24 mA g −1 and 25 °C.

In-situ bio-nano FeS synthesis on SRB cell walls eliminates ex-situ nanoparticle production. • Ternary coupling: biological reduction tunes chemical precipitation for 76.2% REE recovery. • Dynamic bio-nano interface: -NH₂/S=O/-OH/-COOH complexation drives chemisorption (R 2 = 0.999). • Five-cycle reusability (80.7% capacity): practical robustness for continuous mining effluents. • Concurrent REE recovery and sulfate reduction: process intensification for dual pollutant control. The effective recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from rare earth mine wastewater is a crucial issue for the sustainable utilization of resources and environmental protection. This study demonstrated the concurrent recovery of REEs from mining wastewater by utilizing sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) to synthesize FeS nanoparticles in situ. SEM-EDS, XRD and XPS showed that bio-nano FeS (nFeS) precipitated on cell walls within 48 h, forming SRB-nFeS-EPS composites that sequestered 76.2% of total REEs-significantly higher than SRB alone (56.1%), abiotic nFeS (48.3%) or extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) (7.7%). SRB efficiently reduced SO₄ 2− to S 2− in rare earth wastewater (the utilization rate of SO₄ 2− reached 56.7% at 24 h), and simultaneously, S 2− and Fe 2+ underwent chemical precipitation to form nFeS (50–200 nm). A pseudo-second-order (PSO) model (R 2 = 0.999) and five-cycle reusability (80.7% capacity retained) indicated chemisorption dominance and practical robustness. FTIR and 3D-EEM suggested that microbial -NH₂ groups may complex with S O and -OH/-COOH on the nFeS surface, contributing to combined complexation and ion-exchange. Pearson correlation analysis further highlighted C-OH and -NH₂ functional groups ( r ≥ 0.95) and the S 2− -Fe 2+ couple ( r = 0.95) as potential key factors governing REE sequestration and biomineralization synergy. The process is governed by a dynamic ternary coupling of biological reduction, chemical precipitation and adsorption co-precipitation, whose transition point defines the optimum bio-nano interfacial synergy. The findings offer a low-energy route for precise, in-situ REE recovery from sulfate-rich mining effluents.
