Rapid n-butanol gas sensor based on CuBi2O4 porous nanotubes

Wang Zhenxing,Luo Qingsong,Huang Yiheng,Chen Yan,Wang Yimu,Feng Changhao

The sensitive and rapid detection of n-butanol gas is crucial for ensuring industrial safety, environmental protection, and biological health. In this study, we employed electrospinning to fabricate a series of CuBi 2 O 4 nanofibers and nanotubes, followed by thorough characterization and analysis of their structural and functional features using XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, and XPS techniques. The gas-sensing performance demonstrates that CuBi 2 O 4 nanotubes (CBO-500) exhibit an exceptionally rapid response to n-butanol, highlighting their potential for use in high-sensitivity n-butanol sensors. The sensor exhibited a response of 12.30–10 ppm n-butanol at 150 °C, with a rapid response time of 2 s and a recovery time of 41 s. Furthermore, the sensors based on CBO-500 nanotubes exhibited excellent selective. In addition, this study elucidates the underlying mechanisms responsible for the gas-sensing properties of CuBi 2 O 4 nanotubes toward n-butanol.

Loofah-Inspired Hierarchical Omniphobic Membrane for Efficient Dissolved Gas Extraction

Wei Zhang,Haifeng Gao,Xuran Zhu,Yanzong Meng,Leyu Shen,Zhongyao Jiang,Hongjian Gao

To address the persistent challenge of membrane wetting during oil-gas separation in transformer condition monitoring, an omniphobic composite membrane was developed to facilitate the reliable online detection of dissolved gases. An F-CNTs/Teflon AF/PVDF composite membrane, featuring a loofah-like hierarchical structure and omniphobic properties, was fabricated via spraying-deposition strategy on the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate. The morphology, surface chemical composition, wettability and stability of the F-CNTs/Teflon AF/PVDF composite membrane were systematically characterized. Subsequently, the oil-gas separation performance of the composite membrane was evaluated using standard transformer oil containing dissolved gases as the feed solution. The results indicated that fluorinated carbon nanotubes (F-CNTs) were successfully modified onto the membrane surface, creating a re-entrant morphology composed of an intersecting nanotube network that mimics the hierarchical architecture of a loofah. The F-CNTs/Teflon AF/PVDF composite membrane exhibited exceptional omniphobicity, achieving contact angles of 168.2 ± 1.5° and 127.5 ± 1.0° towards DI water and mineral insulating oil, respectively. Additionally, the loofah-inspired composite membrane demonstrated robust thermal and ultrasonic stability. In oil-gas separation tests, the omniphobic membrane displayed a rapid response and high efficiency for dissolved gas extraction, achieving dynamic equilibrium within 64 min. Furthermore, the modification improved permeation efficiency by 25.6%. These results suggest that the developed omniphobic membrane is a promising alternative for oil-gas separation in the condition monitoring of oil-filled electrical equipment.

Scalable quasi-pure MOF membranes for energy-efficient gas separations

Song Shizheng,Fan Dong,Jia Xilin,Zhou Zhe,Diaz-Marquez Alejandro,Liu Zhihao,Huang Lingzhi,Liu Shuo,Wen He,Wang Yanjie,Yao Dahua,Maurin Guillaume,Han Yu,Wang Haihui,Eddaoudi Mohamed,Zhou Sheng

Metal–organic framework (MOF) membranes offer great potential to address the energy penalties of energy-intensive gas separations 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 . Deriving convenient scalable protocols is essential for the successful translation and deployment of MOF-based membranes into practical applications 6 , 7 , 8 . Here we report a new membrane architecture, the quasi-pure MOF membrane (>90 vol% MOF), manufacturable at scale using industry-reliable solution-processing techniques and offering separation performance approaching that of associated pure MOF membranes, fully realizing the MOF intrinsic potential. This advance is enabled by a merged-phase approach fusing MOFs and polymers into a single pseudo-continuous phase and proffering MOFs with polymer-like surface properties, allowing rheologically controlled flocculated networks even at extreme solid concentrations. Representative benchmark MOFs (ZIF-67, CALF-20 and CuBDC) were fabricated into quasi-pure membranes and evaluated for essential separations, including propylene/propane, ethylene/ethane, carbon capture and hydrogen purification. Demonstrating industrial relevance, continuous roll-to-roll fabrication of quasi-pure (110)-oriented ZIF-67 membranes was achieved at an industrial plant. For propylene/propane separation, these membranes achieve a propylene permeability of about 160 barrer and mixed-gas selectivity of about 100—sufficient to produce polymer-grade propylene, offering an 80% purification cost reduction compared with distillation based on techno-economic analysis. This study addresses the long-standing gap between performance and scalability of crystalline membranes for demanding molecular separations.

Gas-pressure assisted ultrafast high-temperature sintering of Si3N4 ceramics

Chengzhi Xu,Haiyuan Zhang,Xiaodong Li,Jiakai Cao,Lei Yang,Gang He

Fabrication of high density silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4 ) ceramics by ultrafast high-temperature sintering remains challenges due to the decomposition of Si 3 N 4 under high temperature at atmospheric pressure. Herein, a gas-pressure assisted ultrafast high-temperature sintering (G-UHS) was developed for the preparation of Si 3 N 4 ceramics. The effects of sintering temperature (T), heating rate (HR), nitrogen pressure (P), holding time (t), and Y 2 O 3 -MgO composite sintering aids on the mass loss, oxygen content, phase evolution, and microstructure of Si 3 N 4 ceramics were systematically investigated. The densification mechanism during ultrafast high-temperature sintering was further elucidated by thermodynamic analysis in terms of mass loss and oxygen content changes. It was found that under atmospheric pressure, the mass loss during the ultrafast high-temperature sintering process first originates from the decomposition of silicon oxynitride generated by the reaction between silicon oxide on the powder surface and internal Si 3 N 4 , followed by the direct decomposition of Si 3 N 4 . Increasing the gas pressure can effectively inhibit the decomposition of Si 3 N 4 and the volatilization of liquid-phase sintering aids, thereby promoting the densification of Si 3 N 4 ceramics. It was indicated that under ultrafast high-temperature sintering, the rapid formation of rod-like crystal structure by α/β phase transition through dissolution and precipitation inhibits particle rearrangement and restricts the densification of Si 3 N 4 ceramics. Si 3 N 4 ceramics with a relative density of 94.17% were successfully prepared under the optimal sintering conditions (sintering temperature 1750 °C, nitrogen pressure 0.2 MPa, heating rate 50 °C/s, holding time 180 s) with the addition of 4 wt% Y 2 O 3 and 6 wt% MgO. This study can provide useful guidance for the optimization of the ultrafast high-temperature sintering process of high performance Si 3 N 4 ceramics.

Sensitization performance of MWCNTs for ZnO-based methane gas sensor

Xiangxiang Chen,Lu Qiu,Fangzheng Liu,Xiangjie Wei,Haoyu Wu,Junwei Ke,Xinyao Xie,Zhaoyang Zhang,Shiyi Huang,Tianhao Liu

Methane (CH 4 ) is a colorless, odorless, flammable, and explosive gas, making real-time monitoring critical for industrial and public safety. Conventional ZnO-based sensors are hindered by their requirement for elevated operating temperatures (>300 ℃), which severely constrains their practical applicability. To overcome this limitation, MWCNTs/ZnO composites were synthesized via a facile one-step hydrothermal method to enhance CH 4 sensing performance at low operating temperatures. Materials characterization revealed that the MWCNTs/ZnO composite possesses a substantially enhanced specific surface area (114.01   m²/g), approximately 3.5-fold greater than that of pristine ZnO nanosheets. Gas sensing tests demonstrated that the MWCNTs/ZnO composite exhibits a response of 2.21 toward 1500 ppm CH 4 at 50 °C, which is approximately two-fold higher than that of pristine ZnO nanosheets. The developed sensor simultaneously demonstrates exceptional selectivity and favorable humidity resistance. This study provides a new approach for developing low-power, high-sensitivity methane gas sensors. The sensitization performance of MWCNTs for ZnO-based methane gas sensor can be attributed to the geometric and electronic sensitization, as well as abundant active sites.

Deep exploration of factors affecting the selectivity of gas sensors

Yao Wang,Jing Cao,Shuangming Wang,Xiaoxue Xu,Zhixu Ye,Zhuoyue Chen,Ruipeng Song,Han Wang,Zhuo Chen,Haiming Zhang

The gas sensing performance of Au@In₂O₃ under thermal and optical excitation conditions was systematically studied. • It reveals that the Fermi level follows different regulation rules under heating and illumination conditions. • Explains the physical essence of selective changes. Innovatively, the “selective dynamic regulation” model was proposed. Improving the selectivity of semiconductor based sensitive materials is a widely concerned topic in the field of gas sensors. However, due to the complexity of sensitive processes, there are still diverse opinions on the factors that affect selectivity. In this work, a series of experiments based on Au@In 2 O 3 nanospheres is designed to explore the important factors that affect selectivity. It is proposed that Fermi level is an important role in affecting sensor selectivity. Innovatively explained the essence of Fermi level changes under light driven and thermal driven conditions. A core-shell Au@In 2 O 3 nanosphere gas sensor with dual selectivity under different condition is reported. Under heating conditions, Au@In 2 O 3 nanosphere shows a super selectivity for 1-butanol and its sensitivity up to 170.7 towards 100 ppm 1-butanol at 190 °C. Under lighting conditions, Au@In 2 O 3 displays ultra-high selectivity to formaldehyde, and its sensitivity towards 100 ppm formaldehyde as high as 232.5 under 480 nm illumination. Under heating and lighting conditions, the variation of Fermi level follows different rules, leading to changes in selectivity. This work not only provides new ideas for the design of highly selective gas sensors, but also opens up new paths for the multi scenario application of sensors. Carbon Dioxide Gas Sensor Based on the LaCoO3/MXene Heterojunction

Zuozhe Ding,Qingdong Chen,Hao Zhang,Weiwei Wang,Dongzhi Zhang

Carbon dioxide is one of the typical gases of a lithium battery thermal runaway. In this paper, lanthanum cobaltate (LaCoO3) nanospheres were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis route, sheet structure MXene nanomaterials were prepared by lithium fluoride (LiF) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) etching aluminum titanium-carbide (Ti3AlC2), and a CO2 sensor assembled by a LaCoO3/MXene nanocomposite was successfully constructed. The nanocomposite was observed and characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, and XPS, and the gas sensitivity of the composite sensitive material and the single sensitive material to CO2 was systematically compared. The results show that the response of a LaCoO3/MXene nanocomposite sensor to 800 ppm of CO2 reaches 50.47% at the optimum operating temperature of 60 °C, which is 2.94 times higher than that of a pristine LaCoO3 sensor (17.16%). In addition, the LaCoO3/MXene sensors demonstrate low detection limits (50 ppm), short response/recovery times (14/32 s@ 800 ppm), and good long-term stability. The gas sensing properties of the composite may be due to the Schottky heterojunction formed between the LaCoO3 nanospheres and MXene. The results indicate that LaCoO3/MXene nanocomposites are potential CO2 sensing materials at low operating temperatures.

NiS hierarchical nano-microspheres for high-sensitive ethanol gas sensing

Feihu Li,Ziqiang Zhang,Junjie Jing,Qing Xue,Keyu Chen,Yeguang Zhang,Huibing Fu,Zili Zhan,Peng Wang

Development of highly sensitive ethanol gas sensors is critical for numerous applications including industrial gas leak monitoring, environmental air quality assessment, food fermentation process control, and automotive drunk driving prevention. Here, NiS hierarchical nano-microspheres (NiS-HNMs) were successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. The gas sensing performance toward ethanol was comprehensively evaluated by testing key parameters. The results demonstrate that the NiS-HNMs exhibit remarkable efficiency in ethanol detection. The gas sensor fabricated with NiS-HNMs achieves a response value of 4.33 toward 10 ppm ethanol at 130°C. Meanwhile, the gas sensor demonstrates excellent selectivity, short-term repeatability, and long-term stability for ethanol detection, along with an excellent linear relationship over the concentration range of 1–10 ppm. The superior gas sensing performance of the NiS-HNMs is attributed to their hierarchical nano-microsphere structure, with a large specific surface area (174.09 m 2 /g), providing abundant active sites. Additionally, a large amount of surface-adsorbed oxygen was detected on the surface of NiS-HNMs, which indicates that more adsorbed oxygen molecules participate in ethanol gas sensing reactions, thus contributing to their excellent gas sensing performance. In summary, this study successfully synthesized hierarchically structured NiS nano-microspheres, which provide a novel perspective for constructing high-performance ethanol sensors and show significant application potential in high-sensitivity detection fields.

α-Fe2O3/TiO2/Ti3C2Tx Nanocomposites for Enhanced Acetone Gas Sensors

Zhihua Zhao,Zhenli Lv,Zhuo Chen,Baocang Zhou,Zhigang Shao

Metal oxide semi-conductors are widely applied in various fields due to their low cost, easy processing, and good compatibility with microelectronic technology. In this study, ternary α-Fe2O3/TiO2/Ti3C2Txnanocomposites were prepared via simple hydrothermal and annealing treatments. The composition, morphology, and crystal structure of the samples were studied using XPS, SEM, EDS, XRD, and multiple other testing methods. The gas-sensing measurement results suggest that the response value (34.66) of the F/M-3 sensor is 3.5 times higher than the pure α-Fe2O3sensor (9.78) around 100 ppm acetone at 220°C, with a rapid response and recovery time (10/7 s). Furthermore, the sensors have an ultra-low detection limit (0.1 ppm acetone), excellent selectivity, and long-term stability. The improved sensitivity of the composites is mainly attributed to their excellent metal conductivity, the unique two-dimensional layered structure of Ti3C2Tx, and the heterojunction formed between the nanocomposite materials. This research paves a new route for the preparation of MXene derivatives and metal oxide nanocomposites.

Gas-Sensitive Cellulosic Triboelectric Materials for Self-Powered Ammonia Sensing

Wanglin Zhang,Jiamin Zhao,Chenchen Cai,Ying Qin,Xiangjiang Meng,Yanhua Liu,Shuangxi Nie

Gas-sensitive materials are capable of dynamic identification and content monitoring of specific gases in the environment, and their applications in the field of gas sensing are promising. However, weak adsorption properties are the main challenge limiting the application of gas-sensitive materials. A highly adsorbent gas-sensitive cellulose nanofibril (CNF)-based triboelectric material with a layered structure is prepared here and it is applied to self-powered gas sensing. The layered structure of the triethoxy-1H,1H,2H,2H-tridecafluoro-n-octylsilane cellulose nanofiber (PFOTES-CNF)-based gas-sensitive material further enhances the adsorption of the material due to electrostatic adsorption in the electrostatic field induced by triboelectricity. It is found that the ammonia-sensitive material obtained by loading Ti 3 C 2 T x in PFOTES-CNF has a fast response/recovery (12/14 s), high sensitivity response ( V air / V gas = 2.1), high selectivity response (37.6%), and low detection limit (10 ppm) for 100 ppm of ammonia gas. In addition, the ammonia-sensitive CNF-based triboelectric material can accurately identify NH 3 concentration changes in the range of 10–120 ppm and transmit the signal wirelessly to the user interface, facilitating real-time online monitoring of NH 3 in the environment. A novel strategy is provided here for designing and preparing high-performance gas-sensitive composites and the analysis of self-powered gas sensing is guided.

Metastable Antimony-Doped SnO2 Quantum Wires for Ultrasensitive Gas Sensors

Zhilong Song,Zhixiang Hu,Jingyao Liu,Jia Yan,Huaming Li,Jianjun Jiang,Jiang Tang,Huan Liu

Doping is fundamental to controlling the properties of bulk semiconductors. Although the antimony (Sb V )-doping strategy is widely employed in the design of practical tin oxide (SnO 2 ) semiconductor gas sensors for higher signal-to-noise ratio, challenges remain to dope semiconductor nanocrystals since the diffusion of impurity atoms may be far from realized at the synthesis temperatures used. Herein, a metastable Sb-doping strategy is proposed to overcome the serious receptor-versus-transducer mismatch in SnO 2 quantum wires (QWs). The solvothermal synthesis of colloidal Sb III -doped SnO 2 QWs has been conducted at 180 °C, whereby the antimony amount is varied to optimize the structural and morphological properties for higher surface activity and electrical conductivity. A unique n-type doping mechanism arising from the stable presence of Sb III on SnO 2 (101) facets via Sn II -O-Sb III is demonstrated. Further, the use of sensitive (down to 4 ppb, the lowest detection limit ever reported), fast (response and recovery time of 43 s and 96 s toward 10 ppm of H 2 S) gas sensors for H 2 S detection at near room temperature (40 °C) is showcased. The metastable Sb-doping strategy may pave the way to ultrasensitive gas sensor possessing low power consumption and excellent integration compatibility to satisfy the increasing demand for ubiquitous and reliable gas detection.
