Electronic structure adjustment of 3D transition bimetallic phosphate/reduced graphene oxide as a hybrid electrocatalyst for the HER

Jianzhi Wang,Hongyi Chen,Hongliang Yu,Wangshu Tang,Yuanhang Wu,Yijie Yang,Yu Luo,Jie Yang,Faquan Yu

Designing efficient and cost-effective nonprecious electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline solution still remains a significant challenge. Herein, we fabricated a three-dimensional (3D) transition bimetallic phosphate/reduced graphene oxide grown in situ on a nickel foam (NiCoP@rGO/NF) for the HER in alkaline media. NiCoP@rGO/NF exhibits a unique three-dimensional spherical nanostructure with a large specific surface area and short diffusion path, which are conducive to the transfer of electrons. NiCoP@rGO/NF requires an overpotential of only 94 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, with a low Tafel slope (39 mV dec−1), and demonstrates excellent durability in 1.0 M KOH condition. Our work provides a new idea for designing high-performance HER electrocatalysts, which are highly needed in various practical applications.

Rational design of superaerophobic array electrode synergy enhanced by wettability engineering and doping engineering for HER catalytic performance

Shijun Xu,Yi He,Siming Yan,Teng He,Hongjie Li,Yuan Gao,Wen Chen,Jin Yan,Guiyang Wu,Xi Yuan

This article elucidates the synthesis of NiMoO 4 -based catalysts with different arrays and crystal structures, including nanowires (nw), nanoplates (ns), and nanocolumns (nc). Subsequently, a high-temperature phosphorization method was employed to generate the corresponding P-NiMoO 4 catalysts. The study investigates the structural evolution of the catalysts and changes in the active species under operational conditions. Concurrently, density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide a more in-depth description of the HER reaction mechanism, considering d-band centers and adsorption energies. Experimental results demonstrate that phosphorized NiMoO 4 with a nanowire array structure and crystal structures of NiMoO 4 and MoO 3 exhibit the optimal HER performance, displaying superhydrophilic and underwater superaerophobic behaviors. The hydrophilic contact angle is 0°, and the aerophobic contact angle is 156.8° This array electrode achieves a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 at an overpotential as low as 73.97 mV. The experiments indicate that through doping and morphology control engineering, catalytic performance can be further synergistically enhanced, providing a new perspective for preparing HER catalytic electrodes with potential applications.

Xingwei Zhou,Xin Liu,Jiahao Zhang,Cai Zhang,Seung Jo Yoo,Jin-Gyu Kim,Xianyu Chu,Chao Song,Peng Wang,Zhenzhen Zhao,Dabing Li,Wei Zhang,Weitao Zheng

Preventing agglomeration and corrosion of metal electrocatalysts at nanoscale is crucial for electrochemical energy conversion, such as fuel cell and overall water splitting , where all the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are the core. Herein, an effective strategy is developed for preparing multifunctional self-supporting electrocatalysts with uniformly distributed cobalt nanoparticles and clusters. Benefiting from good electrical conductivity and multiple active sites, the trifunctional self-supporting catalyst free from stacking and aggregating exhibits excellent OER and HER activities with an overpotential of 270 and 110 mV to obtain a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline media . The ORR performance was tested in 0.1 M KOH solution with a half-wave potential of ∼0.80 V and a limiting current density of ∼ −4.8 mA cm −2 . Our finding provides an opportunity for the rational design of multifunctional and highly-efficient self-supporting electrocatalysts towards the integration of electrochemical energy conversion.

Synthesis of novel cubic Ni2Mo3N and its electronic structure regulation by vanadium doping towards high-efficient HER electrocatalyst

Peng Zhou,Xingshuai Lv,Yugang Gao,Zhong Liang,Yuanyuan Liu,Zeyan Wang,Peng Wang,Zhaoke Zheng,Ying Dai,Baibiao Huang

Recently, Ni x Mo y N materials attach much attention in the field of electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution due to their good performance and high stability. However, most of the reports on Ni x Mo y N materials are Ni 0·2 Mo 0·8 N, and there are few reports on Ni 2 Mo 3 N. In fact, as one member of the Ni x Mo y N materials, Ni 2 Mo 3 N also has rich electronic properties and high electrical conductivity. Herein, we report the novel Ni 2 Mo 3 N and compare it to the traditional Ni 0·2 Mo 0.8 N. The results show that the Ni 2 Mo 3 N exhibits better performance than the Ni 0·2 Mo 0·8 N which means that it has great research potential in the field of hydrogen evolution. In order to further improve its catalytic performance, we regulate its electronic structure by V doping (V–Ni 2 Mo 3 N). The V–Ni 2 Mo 3 N material exhibits lower overpotential (54 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ) and outstanding stability. According to the theoretical calculation, the reason why the material exhibits superior performance is that V doping optimizes the chemical adsorption and bonding ability of the material to water molecule and reaction intermediate H, improves the electrical conductivity of the material.

Highly conjugated 2D COF/MOF composites for bifunctional electrocatalytic alkaline HER and OER with enhanced activity and stability

Yang Liu,Zhao-Di Yang,Rui Zhang,Yingchao Lai,Yu Zhang,Guiling Zhang

Electrocatalytic water splitting, consisting of anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), represents a promising renewable energy technology for producing ultra-high purity hydrogen through efficient energy conversion and storage. However, the practical implementation of this technology in alkaline environments is hindered by the sluggish kinetics of both HER and OER, which significantly limit water splitting efficiency. The development of highly active and stable alkaline HER/OER electrocatalysts is urgently needed yet remains challenging. In this work, we synthesized a novel two-dimensional (2D) highly conjugated COF/MOF composite (COF-C4N/THQ-M) through a post-synthesis method. This method enables controlled growth of part of COF-C4N at the edges of THQ-M MOF to prevent structural disintegration of THQ-M, consequently to enhance surface charge transfer efficiency and further to improve catalytic activity and stability. By regulating metal sites, COF-C4N/THQ-Co and COF-C4N/THQ-Co2Fe1 are proposed to be optimal alkaline HER electrocatalysts with an overpotential of 58 mV at -10 mA cm -2 and alkaline OER electrocatalyst with 314 mV at 10 mA cm -2 , respectively, superior to most of the reported non-precious metals electrocatalysts. The charge transfer characteristics and the pathways of alkaline HER and OER were calculated based on DFT calculations to reveal the synergistic mechanism of COF-C4N and THQ-M. This work provides a novel idea for developing highperformance bifunctional electrocatalysts for alkaline water splitting applications based on hybrid highly conjugated COF/MOF systems.

Self-stabilization of zero-dimensional PdIr nanoalloys at two-dimensional manner for boosting their OER and HER performance

Anzhou Yang,Keying Su,Shangzhi Wang,Yingzi Wang,Xiaoyu Qiu,Wu Lei,Yawen Tang

It remains a grand challenge to transform zero-dimensional (0D) noble-metal building blocks into well-defined two-dimensional (2D) architectures, which normally lacking an intrinsic driving force for anisotropic permutation in 2D manner. Herein, we report the first example of using a simple but efficient hydrothermal route to synthesize and self-stabilize ultrathin 0D PdIr NCs (2.4 nm) into a new class of freestanding 2D porous PdIr nanosheets with lateral size up to 1.5 μm (PdIr PNSs). Distinguished from previously reported 2D noble-metal nanosheets, the resultant 2D PdIr PNSs with immense surface area-to-volume ratio and high density of exposed atoms largely retain the special natures of 0D PdIr building blocks and further optimize their catalytic activity and stability at 2D manner. Electrochemical studies show that 2D PdIr PNSs deliver both excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities with an HER overpotential of 40 mV and an OER overpotential of 285 mV affording 10 mA cm −2 , outperforming those of 0D PdIr building blocks. The present work highlights the importance of tuning 0D nanocrystals at 2D manner for enhancing their OER and HER performance.

In-situ growth of ruthenium-based nanostructure on carbon cloth for superior electrocatalytic activity towards HER and OER

Mingzhu You,Xin Du,Xinghui Hou,Zeyuan Wang,Ying Zhou,Haipeng Ji,Liying Zhang,Zongtao Zhang,Shasha Yi,Deliang Chen

The control in synthesis and composition plays a vital role in exploring cost-effective efficient electrocatalysts for water splitting. This paper reported a glycerol-assisted solvothermal strategy to synthesize Ru-based electrocatalyst (Ru-G/CC), in-situ growing Ru nanoparticles (NPs) on carbon cloth (CC). The optimal Ru-G/CC exhibits a boosted HER activity (overpotential of 40 mV @ 10 mA cm −2 , Tafel slope 76 mV dec −1 ), surpassing benchmark 20 wt% Pt/C; experimental characterization and DFT calculations verified that Ru NPs with a mixed amorphous/crystalline structure in Ru-G/CC effectively decrease the reaction energy barrier in HER. Also, the hydrothermally derived Ru-H 2 O/CC-350 exhibited a high electrocatalytic OER activity (overpotential of 270 mV @ 10 mA cm −2 , Tafel slope 63 mV dec −1 ), exceeding the commercial RuO 2 . This work provides a successful story via regulating synthetic parameters to design efficient and stable Ru-based electrocatalysts for water splitting.

F, N neutralizing effect induced Co-P-O cleaving endows CoP nanosheets with superior HER and OER performances

Dexin Xu,Jing Yao,Xinzhi Ma,Yan Xiao,Chi Zhang,Wei Lin,Hong Gao

Electrochemical water splitting, the most direct and clean method used for the production of hydrogen, requires highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts that can accelerate hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER) by overcoming their kinetics barriers. Herein, self-supported F, N codoping CoP nanosheets (denoted as FN-CoP NS) are prepared as efficient and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts. Codoping of F and N neutralizes the electronegativity of surface P-O by cleaving the Co-P-O of non-metallic P sites on the surface (O derived from the surface oxidation). This contributes to an increased Co 2+ content with considerable adjustable electronegativity and also optimizes HER and OER processes. As a result, FN-CoP NS requires 66 and 241 mV overpotentials to deliver the current density of 10 mA cm −2 during HER and OER, respectively. A full water electrolyzer equipped FN-CoP NS as both cathode and anode only require 1.57 V to drive the current density of 10 mA cm −2 and to sustain 50 mA cm −2 for 48 h. This work adjusts the electronic structure of metal phosphides by a double anion codoping strategy, which provides a reference value for the rational design of efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Hetero-interfacial nickel nitride/vanadium oxynitride porous nanosheets as trifunctional electrodes for HER, OER and sodium ion batteries

Tuzhi Xiong,Jingting Li,Jagadish Chandra Roy,Malcolm Koroma,Zhixiao Zhu,Hao Yang,Lei Zhang,Ting Ouyang,M.-Sadeeq Balogun,Mohammad Al-Mamun

The development of single electrode with multifunctional purposes for electrochemical devices remains a symbolic challenge in recent technology. This work explores interfacially-rich transition metal nitride hybrid that consist of nickel nitride and vanadium oxynitride (VO 0.26 N 0.52 ) on robust carbon fiber (denoted CF/Ni 3 N/VON) as trifunctional electrode for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and sodium ion batteries (SIBs). The as-prepared CF/Ni 3 N/VON exhibits low HER overpotential of 48 mV@10 mA cm −2 , OER overpotential of 287 mV@10 mA cm −2 , and sodium-ion anode storage reversible capacity of 555 mA h g −1 @0.2 C. Theoretical analyses reveal that the Ni 3 N effectively facilitates hydrogen desorption for HER, increases the electrical conductivity for OER, and promotes the Na-ion storage intercalation process, while the VON substantially elevates the water dissociation kinetics for HER, accelerates the adsorption of OH* intermediate for OER and enhances the Na-ion surface adsorption storage process. Owing to the excellent HER and OER performances of the CF/Ni 3 N/VON electrode, an overall water splitting device denoted as CF/Ni 3 N/VON//CF/Ni 3 N/VON was not only assembled showing an operating voltage of 1.63 V at current density of 10 mA cm −2 but was also successfully self-powered by the assembled CF/Ni 3 N/VON//CF/Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 flexible sodium ion battery. This work will contribute to the development of efficient and cost-effective flexible integrated electrochemical energy devices.

Morphology and Stoichiometry Dependent Electrocatalytic Activity of Cu2ZnSnS4 for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) with Addition of Nonionic Surfactants

Hu Xuemei,Zhou Jianping,Bao Jianqin,Zhang Yadong,Qiao Junqiang

In this work, hierarchical Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 electrocatalysts with different morphologies and stoichiometries were synthesized via the hydrothermal method and their electrocatalytic performances in hydrogen evolution reaction were evaluated. The morphologies of Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 electrocatalysts were modulated by adjusting the content of surfactants during the hydrothermal process. The stoichiometries of as-prepared Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 were found to be Cu 2 Zn 0.8 Sn 0.7 S 2.9 , Cu 2 Zn 0.7 Sn 1.2 S 4.7 and Cu 2 Zn 0.5 Sn 0.7 S 3.2 for the absence of surfactant and the addition of polyethylene glycol-(400) (PEG 400) and octylphenol polyoxyethyleneether-10 (OP 10) respectively. The Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 synthesized with the addition of PEG 400 displayed superior electrocatalytic activity in acid medium with an overpotential of 295 mV obtained at 10 mA cm − 2 and a Tafel slope of 133 mV dec − 1 . This work reveals that the stoichiometry and microstructure of Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 are critically important for its electrocatalytic activity while have less impact on the electrocatalytic durability, and provides useful information to explore the utilization of chalcogenides as the attractive electrocatalysts.

Zeolite-Templated Carbons Supported Rh and Ru Electrocatalysts for Highly Active Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Yuanxin Cao,Xiaoming Yu,Tianfu Wang,Jiahao Li,Nan Li,Anbang Ge,Jie Ying,Tongwen Yu

Here, we report the systematical synthesis of zeolite-templated carbon (ZTC) supported Ru and Rh mono- or bi-metallic electrocatalysts towards hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The zeolite A or ZSM-5 derived ZTC supports and metal sites were adjusted, and all electrocatalysts outperformed the commercial Pt/C electrocatalyst for HER performance. In particular, the RhRu/(ZTC/ZSM5) sample exhibited superior catalytic performance with the overpotential of 24.8 mV@10 mA ⋅ cm −2 , and outstanding stability with 1 mV drop after 20000 cyclic voltammetry circles. This work offers a simple impregnation method for the synthesis of highly performed HER electrocatalysts supported on porous zeolite-templated carbon.

Mechanism from catalyst to catalysis on Ir segregated SrIrO3 for hydrogen evolution reaction

Dongze Li,Wei Tu,Yuxiang Jin,Chao Wang,Song Jin,Wei Liu,Erhong Song,Zhangquan Peng,Junyuan Xu,Ligang Feng

Understanding the intricate mechanisms from material fabrication to catalytic reaction is crucial in energy chemistry. Herein, we elucidate the underlying mechanisms from catalyst to catalysis on Ir-segregated SrIrO 3 (Ir/SrIrO 3 ) as an efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst in acidic conditions. During the phosphorization-assisted reduction process, in-situ spectroscopic analysis revealed that hydrogen radicals (H·) from the dissociation of P-H bonds attack the lattice oxygen at edge Ir-O sites, resulting in the segregation of Ir atoms and the formation of robust Ir-O interfacial structures between exsolved Ir clusters and the oxygen sites in SrIrO 3 . These interfacial structures are essential for the high performance of HER, while SrIrO 3 provides structural stability. The protons in the electrolyte are activated at the Ir nanocluster sites, incorporating oxygen in SrIrO 3 through the Ir-O interface, forming a reconstructed Ir-OH structure. This structure maintains both thermodynamic and electrochemical stability by adjusting hydrogen diffusion, embedding, and surface hydrogen coverage to sustain dynamic equilibrium during the catalytic process. Theoretical analysis confirms the necessity of the stable Ir-O interface via Ir- 5d and O- 2p orbital hybridization and hydrogen intercalation, optimizing charge redistribution, hydrogen bond length, and hydrogen adsorption free energy for enhanced HER kinetics. This study provides new insights into catalyst development by elucidating the relationship between catalyst structure and catalytic performance.
