Hydrothermal Catalytic Upgrading of Model Compounds of Algae-Based Bio-Oil to Monocyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons over Hierarchical HZSM-5

Qi Lu,Yuanzhe Gong,Jianwen Lu,Jian Liu,Yulong Wu

Stearic acid (SA) and hexadecanamide (HA), which are model compounds of algae-based bio-oil, were used to produce aromatics for catalysis by a hierarchical HZSM-5 zeolite under hydrothermal conditions. The results showed that the hierarchical HZSM-5 zeolite was more active than the traditional HZSM-5 parent zeolite. The molar yield of toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene could reach (1.14 ± 0.05) × 100% (normal weight percentage yield = 40.77 wt %) when the reaction temperature was 400 °C. Moreover, the catalyst was stable and recyclable under hydrothermal conditions. Besides, the addition of acetic acid remarkably improved the deoxygenation (or denitrification) and aromatization efficiencies of the SA and HA mixture by more than 25%. This study provides a feasible approach to the valorization of algal biomass and the production of aromatics.

Multifaceted effects of HZSM-5 (Proton-exchanged Zeolite Socony Mobil-5) on catalytic cracking of pinewood pyrolysis vapor in a two-stage fixed bed reactor

Yimeng Wang,Jie Wang

The pinewood was pyrolyzed in the first reactor at a heating rate of 10   °C   min −1 from room temperature to 700   °C, and the vapor was allowed to be cracked through the second reactor in a temperature range of 450–750   °C without and with HZSM-5. Attempts were made to determine a wide spectrum of gaseous and liquid products, as well as the mass and element partitions to gas, water, bio-oil, coke and char. HZSM-5 showed a preferential deoxygenation effect via the facilitated decarbonylation and decarboxylation with the inhibited dehydration at 550–600   °C. This catalyst also displayed a high selectivity for the formations of aromatic hydrocarbons and olefins by the promoted hydrogen transfer to these products at 550–600   °C. The bio-oil produced with HZSM-5 at 500–600   °C had the yields of 14.5–16.8%, the high heat values of 39.1–42.4   MJ   kg −1 , and the energy recoveries of 33–35% (all dry biomass basis).

A tandem system of Cr/HZSM-5 and bismuth-modified CeZrO2 for coupling of ethane dehydrogenation to selective H2 combustion

Ying Li,Haibo Zhao

Ethylene production via chemical looping oxidative dehydrogenation (CL-ODH) of ethane faces a critical challenge in balancing conversion efficiency and selectivity due to competing oxygen species requirements. Here, we present a bifunctional composite catalyst (CrH/BiCZ) by physically integrating a Cr-HZSM5 (Cr-H) dehydrogenation (DH) catalyst with a Bi 2 O 3 -Ce 0.4 Zr 0.6 O 2 (Bi-CZ) selective hydrogen combustion (SHC) catalyst. This tandem system decouples ethane activation and hydrogen combustion, promoting the DH process of ethane through the in situ hydrogen combustion of the SHC catalyst. The Ce-Zr solid solution in Bi-CZ acts as an oxygen reservoir, enabling complete H 2 combustion within 3 min and suppressing carbon deposition. This rapid hydrogen combustion shifts the reaction equilibrium towards ethylene production. At 650 °C, the optimized CrH/BiCZ catalyst achieves 84.1 % ethylene selectivity at 43.0 % ethane conversion, and maintains exceptional stability over 36 redox cycles. This work establishes a scalable chemical looping strategy for efficient ethylene synthesis.

Synergistic catalytic upgrading of spirulina bio-oil via Ni @ alkali-modified HZSM-5 in microwave-assisted two-stage hydrothermal liquefaction

Chenyu Yang,Xinru Ma,Yaohui Fan,Feiyu Zou,Wenjuan Bai,Dianming Chu,Haoxi Ben,Zhaoying Li,Yan He

The urgent need to address global energy shortages and environmental pollution has accelerated the development of renewable algal bio-oils. Spirulina stands out as an ideal feedstock for hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) owing to its high carbon sequestration rate, non-competition with arable land, and rich protein-lipid content. However, Spirulina-derived bio-oil typically suffers from high oxygen content and low heating value. To overcome these limitations, this study developed a microwave-assisted two-stage HTL process integrated with a Ni-loaded, alkali-modified HZSM-5 catalyst. Unlike conventional catalysts that often rely on costly noble metals or suffer from diffusion limitations in microporous structures, this system employs earth-abundant nickel on a hierarchically structured zeolite to enhance both cost-effectiveness and catalytic efficiency. HZSM-5 was treated with NaOH to create mesoporosity, followed by Ni impregnation to introduce hydrogenation functionality. The effects of NaOH concentration and Ni loading on catalyst properties were systematically investigated. Process optimization was performed via response surface methodology using a 3 % sulfuric acid medium, and bio-oil composition was analyzed by GC/MS. Modification with 1 mol/L NaOH increased hydrocarbon content to 32.9 %, while subsequent loading with 5 wt% Ni synergistically boosted the yield to 48.1 %. Molecular dynamics simulations provided mechanistic insights into bond cleavage and conversion pathways of Spirulina-derived model compounds in subcritical water. Compared with existing catalytic systems, this study significantly improves the quality of biofuels, providing an efficient catalytic strategy and fundamental insights for the production of high-quality bio-oil from spirulina.

Ru nanoparticles on HZSM-5 with strong metal–support interactions for efficient hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenols under mild conditions

Jirong Long,Yuxuan Mao,Yiwei Long,Guozhang Chang,Lungang Chen,Wenguang Zhou,Jinxing Long,Yong Liu

Hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenols into high-value cycloalkanes under mild conditions is challenging. Herein, we report a Ru NPs @HZSM-5 catalyst with a unique metal-support interactions that achieves 100 % guaiacol conversion and 99.7 % cyclohexane selectivity at 160 °C and 1 MPa H 2 . Comparative studies with single-atom and aggregated Ru catalysts reveal that well-dispersed Ru nanoparticles coupled with acid sites offer superior activity and selectivity. Kinetic analysis and in situ DRIFTS demonstrate a sequential mechanism involving rapid hydrogenation of the aromatic ring followed by rate-limiting deoxygenation steps. Characterizations and CO-DRIFTS confirm particle sizes, optimal metal-support interactions, and enhanced acidity in Ru NPs @HZSM-5. Theoretical calculations further reveal favorable electronic states and lower energy barriers for deoxygenation on Ru NPs @HZSM-5. The catalyst also shows broad substrate compatibility, efficiently converting various lignin-derived phenolics. This work provides valuable insights into the critical synergy between metal nanoparticles and acidic supports for efficient lignin upgrading.

Performance of Toluene Removal in a Nonthermal Plasma Catalysis System over Flake-Like HZSM-5 Zeolite with Tunable Pore Size and Evaluation of Its Byproducts

Weicheng Xu,Kaichun Lin,Daiqi Ye,Xueding Jiang,Junxing Liu,Yangda Chen

In this study, a series of HZSM-5 catalysts were prepared by the chemical liquid-phase deposition method, and low concentration toluene degradation was carried out in an atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), SEM, TEM, and N2adsorption analysis techniques. In addition, several organic contaminants were used to evaluate the adsorption performance of the prepared catalysts, and the effect of pore size on the removal efficiency of toluene and byproduct formation was also investigated. The unmodified HZSM-5 zeolite (Z0) exhibited good performance in toluene removal and CO2selectivity due to the diffusion resistance of ozone and the amounts of active species (OH• and O•). Meanwhile, the time of flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS) result showed that there were more byproducts of the benzene ring in the gas phase under the action of small micropore size catalysts. Moreover, the surface byproducts were detected by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS).Keywords:HZSM-5;dielectric barrier discharge;toluene;pore;byproduct

Na Zhao,Siwen Li,Jinyi Wang,Ronglan Zhang,Ruimin Gao,Jianshe Zhao,Junlong Wang

M 2 (PcAN) 2 ( M =Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Mn) anchored onto W-HZSM-5 ( M 2 (PcAN) 2 –W-HZSM-5) or the M 2 (PcTN) 2 doping W-HZSM-5 ( M 2 (PcTN) 2 /W-HZSM-5) were prepared and their catalytic performances were tested for oxidative desulfurization in the presence of oxygen. Thiophene (T), benzothiophene (BT), and dibenzothiophene (DBT) were considered as sulfur compounds . Among zeolite-based catalysts, the Cu 2 (PcAN) 2 –W-HZSM-5 and Cu 2 (PcTN) 2 /W-HZSM-5 showed superior desulfurization performance and the activity of selectivity followed the order: T>BT>DBT. The effects of phthalocyanine concentration were studied by UV–Vis and calcination temperature was obtained by TG-DSC for Cu 2 (PcTN) 2 /W-HZSM-5. Catalysts were characterized by EA, IR, XRD , SEM, TEM, ICP , and N 2 adsorption. Reaction time, temperature and the amount of catalyst were investigated as the important parameters for optimization of the reaction. Furthermore, a possible process of oxidative desulfurization and the reaction products were proposed.

Selective production of chemicals from biomass pyrolysis over metal chlorides supported on zeolite

Shuai Leng,Xinde Wang,Qiuxia Cai,Fengyun Ma,Yue’e Liu,Jianguo Wang

Direct biomass conversion into chemicals remains a great challenge because of the complexity of the compounds; hence, this process has attracted less attention than conversion into fuel. In this study, we propose a simple one-step method for converting bagasse into furfural (FF) and acetic acid (AC). In this method, bagasse pyrolysis over ZnCl 2 /HZSM-5 achieved a high FF and AC yield (58.10%) and a 1.01 FF/AC ratio, but a very low yield of medium-boiling point components. However, bagasse pyrolysis using HZSM-5 alone or ZnCl 2 alone still remained large amounts of medium-boiling point components or high-boiling point components. The synergistic effect of HZSM-5 and ZnCl 2 , which combines pyrolysis, zeolite cracking, and Lewis acid-selective catalysis results in highly efficient bagasse conversion into FF and AC. Therefore, our study provides a novel, simple method for directly converting biomass into high-yield useful chemical.

Catalytic cracking of model compounds of bio-oil: Characteristics and mechanism research on guaiacol and acetic acid

Huiyan Zhang,Chenjun Yang,Yujie Tao,Min Chen,Rui Xiao

The unstable oxygenates of raw bio-oil limit its high-value utilization, which renders the refinement process necessary. Catalytic cracking is one of the promising refining methods and HZSM-5 was found to be an effective catalyst. To investigate the reaction mechanism of catalytic cracking of the oxygenated components in bio-oil, guaiacol and acetic acid, are employed for the catalytic conversion over HZSM-5 and metal modified zeolite Zn/HZSM-5 in a self-designed micro-reactor. Herein, the mechanism of pyrolysis and catalytic cracking was calculated by density functional theory (DFT). For guaiacol, the selectivity of salicylaldehyde decreased from 57.41% to 41.84% and 40.31% over HZSM-5 and Zn/HZSM-5, respectively. In the catalytic cracking over Zn/HZSM-5, the yield of aromatic hydrocarbon increased. More specifically, benzene appeared in the liquid product. For acetic acid, the removal of the oxy-functional group was further promoted by Zn/HZSM-5, the as-formed ketene intermediate continues to react with zeolite catalysts, generating acetyl cation, and finally formed CO and ethylene. Zn/HZSM-5 has a better effect on promoting the reaction of ketene and methoxide since the energy barrier of the rate-determining step in this reaction decreased from 163.27 kJ/mol to 151.19 kJ/mol. Demethoxylation and dehydration were considered to be favored by Lewis acid sites.

Catalytic cracking of triglycerides with a base catalyst and modification of pyrolytic oils for production of aviation fuels

Fanglin Li,Jianchun Jiang,Peng Liu,Qiaolong Zhai,Fei Wang,Chung-yun Hse,Junming Xu

Molecular structure transformation is a critical step for synthesis of aviation biofuels from triglycerides, to yield alkanes, aromatics and cycloalkanes. To this end, triglycerides were treated by catalytic cracking coupled with rectification to obtain hydrocarbon fuels, and the molecular weight of the liquid product was adjusted to the desirable boiling range of aviation fuel. To further modify the molecular structures, the pyrolytic hydrocarbons were partially converted into aromatics and cycloalkanes by a two-step process. Different raw materials including soybean oil, rubber seed oil, waste cooking oil and acidified oil were cracked with a 5 wt% base catalyst at 350–450 °C (under the atmospheric pressure) in a benchtop reactor. Afterwards, the linear hydrocarbons of C8–C15 size were transformed into aromatics by HZSM-5 at 350 °C for 6 h. Then, a portion of the aromatics were converted into cycloalkanes catalyzed by Pd/AC at 200 °C and 6 MPa (H2) for 6 h. As a result, a desirable mixture of linear hydrocarbons, aromatics and cycloalkanes was obtained with a similar composition and properties to traditional fossil aviation fuels.

Biomass to drugs: Green production of salicylic acid from 2-furoic acid in two steps

Pengxin Yu,Guangyu Sun,Lu Xiong,Boying Zheng,Teng Li,Jun Jiang,Yantao Wang,Weiran Yang

Salicylic acid, generally produced by chemical synthesis based on petrochemical products, is a vital organic acid and widely used in the pharmaceutical synthesis. This work developed a new and green route for the production of salicylic acid from biomass-derived 2-furoic acid in two steps. Firstly, 2 mmol 2-furoic acid was creatively converted to 2,3-benzofuran using HZSM-5 (Si/Al=130) at 280 °C for 1.5 h under 100 psi N 2 ; and then the oxidation of 2,3-benzofuran to salicylate was conducted with tert‑ butyl hydroperoxide under basic condition without metal catalyst at 120 °C for 1 h. The stability of the catalyst for the first step and the possible reaction pathway for the second step based on the control experiments was properly envisioned. Regardless of limited salicylic acid yield (16%) from 2-furoic acid, this work paves a potentially feasible pathway for the preparation of drugs from biomass.

Synergistic effect of Pd and Mo catalysts on the biomass hydropyrolysis vapor upgrading for aromatic hydrocarbons

Wanchen Zhu,Zhongyang Luo,Feiting Miao,Longyi Liu

Biomass hydropyrolysis vapor upgrading (HPVU) is a promising approach for biofuel production, where metallic catalysts play a key role in oxygen removal and aromatic hydrocarbon formation. In this study, Pd/HZSM-5 and Mo/γAl 2 O 3 catalysts were prepared and utilized individually or in combination to investigate their effects on poplar HPVU in a continuous-flow reactor. Meanwhile, the influence of upgrading temperature on hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) reactions was studied. At an upgrading temperature of 400 ℃, combination of Pd/HZSM-5 and Mo/γAl₂O₃ resulted in an organic phase yield of 9.19 wt%. The mass yield and selectivity of aromatic hydrocarbons reached 8.13 wt% and 93.4 %, respectively, with selectivity of C8 + monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons accounting for 56.7 %. The overall mass balance was 96.2 %. The presence of Pd promotes hydrogenation and hydroalkylation reactions, while Mo/γAl₂O₃ enhances deoxygenation. Additionally, its mesoporous structure facilitates reactant diffusion. The density functional theory calculations confirmed that Pd could efficiently activate H 2 and thus provide hydrogen radicals for HDO on Mo/γAl₂O₃ surface, which revealed the synergistic effect of these two catalysts. This study highlights that noble-metal catalyst aided by oxophilic metal catalyst can make a significant contribution to biomass HPVU.
