Deep eutectic solvent (DES) has the potential to replace aqueous amines for carbon capture. However, the reported DESs fail to absorb CO 2 equivalent to that absorbed by aqueous amines. To combine the excellent performance of amines and DESs, 9 amine-based DESs were prepared. The tetraethylammonium chloride was selected as the hydrogen bond acceptor, while ethanolamine, diethanol amine and triethanolamine were selected as the hydrogen bond donors. The molar ratios range from 1:4 to 1:6. Their properties were analyzed, including the structure, the thermal behavior and the potential corrosion. It has been determined that all DESs show a large liquid range (200 ∼ 600 K). Furthermore, the absorption characteristics of 9 DESs were studied. It has been found that the absorption capacity of DES3 and DES5 can reach up to 0.4066 and 0.3752 mol CO 2 /mol absorbent respectively, even 3 ∼ 6 times amount compared with the corresponding aqueous amines. At the laboratory level, the heat duty for the desorption process at 413.15 K of DES1 is 21.31 % of that for that of 30 wt% MEA at 393.15 K. For DES5, this value is 6.70 %. Besides, these DESs can maintain their splendid performance in absorption–desorption after 5 cycles. Meanwhile, the thermal stability and viscosity of the rich-absorbents were analyzed. Rich-absorbents are stable. Furthermore, effects of water have been inspected. The added water reduces the viscosity but confines the absorption capacity. For balance, the addition of 10 wt% water is recommended. Finally, the absorption mechanism was revealed. Both the physical and chemical absorption promote the absorption capacity of DESs.

The high energy consumption associated with solution regeneration in amine-based CO 2 capture processes remains a major challenge for large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) applications. However, the addition of solid acid catalyst accelerates the slow CO 2 desorption process while reducing the energy consumption for regeneration of the amine-rich solution. Herein, we innovatively developed Mn 3 O 4 -modified SAPO-34 catalysts via impregnation, demonstrating exceptional efficacy in reducing energy consumption for CO 2 -rich monoethanolamine (MEA) solution regeneration. Mn 15 -SAPO catalyst exhibited excellent performance in catalytic desorption tests using a 5 M CO 2 -rich MEA solution at 90 °C, achieving a 31.0 % increase in CO 2 desorption rate, a 133.3 % increase in CO 2 desorption amount, and a 57.1 % reduction in solution regeneration heat duty compared to the non-catalytic process. Comprehensive characterization revealed that the optimized Mn 15 -SAPO catalyst featured abundant strong acidic sites, optimal mesoporous structure, and the redox activity of Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ species. FTIR and 13 C NMR analysis confirmed the catalytic accelerating effect of catalysts on the conversion of intermediates. A possible reaction mechanism for the catalytic desorption of CO 2 over Mn x -SAPO catalysts was discussed. Additionally, the cycling stability of Mn 15 -SAPO catalyst was also evaluated. This work demonstrated the potential of Mn 15 -SAPO catalyst in enhancing the efficiency of the amine CO 2 capture process and reducing energy consumption, which was conducive to the application of industrial CO 2 capture.

Catalytic solvent regeneration has garnered significant attention due to its capacity to lower energy demands in industrial processes, promoting broader adoption of carbon capture systems. While progress has been made in catalyst engineering, creating efficient solid acid catalysts still encounters critical obstacles such as synthesizing mesoporous architectures with extensive surface areas and improving the spatial arrangement of active sites. Herein, this study developed a Ni/Fe@KIT-6 catalyst with ordered porosity and dual metal acid sites, leveraging the three-dimensional cubic pore structure of mesoporous silica to enhance liquid-solid mass transfer. The anchored Ni/Fe clusters synergistically enhanced proton transfer, reducing the activation energy of carbamate decomposition through optimized intermediate adsorption configurations. Catalytic testing revealed a 58.1 % enhancement in CO₂ desorption efficiency alongside a 41.2 % decrease in energy requirements relative to non-catalytic systems. The material maintained stable performance across multiple absorption-desorption cycles (efficiency decline <10 %), linked to the KIT-6 framework's retained structural stability and optimized metal-support bonding. Theoretical calculations revealed that the Ni/Fe dual sites lowered the CO 2 desorption reaction energy barrier, aligning with the enhanced CO₂ desorption efficiency. This synergistic interaction of dual metal acid sites within a high-surface-area architecture highlights viable pathways for scalable and energy-efficient CO₂ desorption, thereby advancing practical strategies for large-scale deployment of carbon capture technologies.

In this work, we report a new concept of upconversion-powered photoelectrochemical (PEC) bioanalysis. The proof-of-concept involves a PEC bionanosystem comprising a NaYF4:Yb,Tm@NaYF4upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) reporter, which is confined by DNA hybridization on a CdS quantum dots (QDs)/indium tin oxide (ITO) photoelectrode. The CdS QD-modified ITO electrode was powered by upconversion absorption together with energy transfer effect through UCNPs for a stable photocurrent generation. By measuring the photocurrent change, the target DNA could be detected in a specific and sensitive way with a wide linear range from 10 pM to 1 μM and a low detection limit of 0.1 pM. This work exploited the use of UCNPs as signal reporters and realized upconversion-powered PEC bioanalysis. Given the diversity of UCNPs, we believe it will offer a new perspective for the development of advanced upconversion-powered PEC bioanalysis. Keywords:photoelectrochemical biosensors;upconversion nanoparticles;energy transfer;photo reabsorption

The electro-oxidation of monoethanolamine (MEA) is relevant from fundamental and applied, viz. sewage treatment, fuel cell and electrochemical water splitting, perspectives. Understanding mechanistic details of thorough electrocatalytic oxidation of MEA is of paramount importance for the rational design of high-performing electrocatalysts. Herein, in order to easily and quickly quantify the electro-oxidation degree of MEA and therefore assist the mechanism study, the present paper proposes an innovative strategy for determining the number of electrons transferred in the electro-oxidation of intermediates, with the aid of ultramicroelectrode (UME) and fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (CV). Deconvolutions on two fast-scan CV oxidation peaks, one of which is originated from the electro-oxidation of MEA to glycine intermediate and the other is the further electro-oxidation of intermediate, reveal that the number of electrons transferred in the electro-oxidation of glycine intermediates is merely 3.04±0.75 on pure Au catalyst, indicating the incomplete conversion of glycine to ammonia and glyoxylate ion. The introduction of trace Ni into Au electrocatalyst can remarkably boost the number of electrons transferred, an indication of more thorough electro-oxidation of glycine intermediates and thereby more bio-friendly degradation products. Theoretical calculations based on the density functional theory elucidate that such increase in electro-oxidation degree is due to the stronger adsorption of glycine intermediates on AuNi binary sites than on sole Au sites.

The study of the self-assembly of surfactants in aqueous solutions, though a traditional field, remains fascinating and full of novelty. In this article, the anionic perfluorodecanoic acid surfactant (PFA) is separately complexed with three hydroxyalkylamines (monoethanolamine (MEA), diethylamine (DEA), and triethanolamine (TEA)) in aqueous solutions. The transformation of aggregate morphologies from spherical unilamellar to nanotubes and then to spherical bilamellar is observed at room temperature, which is confirmed by cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurement is used to determine the wall thickness of the three types of aggregates. The main driving force behind the formation of spherical unilamellar vesicles is the hydrogen bonding between the ionized C9F19COO– and the neutral C9F19COOH, as well as the electrostatic interaction between the HO–C2H4–NH3+––OOCF19C9 ion pair. As the number of −CH2CH2OH groups increases, the synergistic interaction between steric hindrance, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interactions induces a transformation in aggregate morphologies from spherical unilamellar vesicles to nanotubes and then to spherical bilamellar vesicles. Additionally, rheological results indicate that the viscoelastic moduli and viscosities of the MEA/PFA/H2O, DEA/PFA/H2O, and TEA/PFA/H2O systems are affected by steric hindrance.

Non-aqueous absorbents (NAAs) have emerged as promising candidates for CO 2 capture due to their energy-saving advantages and non-corrosive properties, yet necessitate further optimization in absorption capacity and regenerability for viable industrial implementation. This study developed a novel NAA through an innovative synergistic absorption–regeneration activation strategy, combining aminoethylethanolamine (AEEA) as the primary CO 2 -active component, 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP) to suppress insoluble products, with dimethylethanolamine (DMEA) and n-propanol (NPA) as dual-functional activators. Through coordinated activation mechanisms—DMEA-driven absorption enhancement and NPA-mediated regeneration promotion—the AEEA-AMP-DMEA-NPA (A-A-D-N) system achieved high-efficiency reversible CO 2 capture. Experimental optimization enabled A-A-D-N to obtain a CO 2 absorption loading of 1.51 mol·mol −1 (42.5 % higher than the DMEA-free system) and near-complete regeneration (≥98.13 %, 14.0 % improvement over the NPA-free system). The A-A-D-N formulation demonstrated exceptional cyclic stability, retaining the regeneration efficiency of 89.4 % after five consecutive absorption–desorption cycles. Mechanism studies combining 13 C NMR analysis and quantum chemical calculations revealed the dual-activation pathways: During absorption, DMEA facilitated zwitterion deprotonation and simultaneously regenerated active AEEA via AEEAH + deprotonation, enabling more AEEA to absorb CO 2 ; In regeneration, NPA acted as a proton shuttle through a low-energy-barrier relay mechanism, promoting efficient proton transfer from AEEAH + to AEEA-carbamate for carbamic acid formation, while subsequently catalyzing carbamic acid decomposition through proton exchange—a pathway distinct from conventional carbamate-to-carbonate conversion. Regeneration energy consumption analysis demonstrated A-A-D-N’s significant improvements over the benchmark 30 wt% MEA, with sensible heat and latent heat reduced by 76.1 % and 87.6 %, respectively. Furthermore, the A-A-D-N absorbent was verified to be non-corrosive to carbon steel. Overall, this work established a dual-activation strategy for developing novel NAAs with combined advantages of high-efficiency CO 2 capture capacity, energy savings and non-corrosive nature, thereby advancing CO 2 capture technologies.

In this study, an efficient and environmentally friendly pretreatment system was developed by combining the biocompatible ionic liquid choline levulinate (ChLA) with monoethanolamine (MEA) to enhance the fractionation and valorization of tea stems (TS). Under optimized conditions (140 °C, 2 h, 20 % water content, ChLA:MEA molar ratio of 1:2), the system achieved high retention of cellulose (89.2 ± 1.4 %) and hemicellulose (76.6 ± 1.4 %), alongside substantial lignin removal (76.9 ± 0.7 %). Spectroscopic and morphological analyses (FTIR, XRD, SEM) confirmed effective disruption of the lignin-carbohydrate complex, a reduction in cellulose crystallinity, and enhanced substrate accessibility. Consequently, enzymatic hydrolysis of the pretreated biomass yielded glucose and xylose at 93.7 ± 0.6 % and 85.7 ± 0.7 %, respectively, representing a more than 212 % improvement in saccharification efficiency compared to untreated TS. Furthermore, the pretreatment selectively cleaved lignin-carbohydrate ester linkages, enabling the recovery of lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) characterized by a high β-O-4 linkage content, low condensation degree, and low molecular weight. These LNPs were incorporated into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based nanocomposite films, which exhibited improved mechanical properties, hydrophobicity, and UV-shielding performance. Overall, this work presented a sustainable and integrated strategy for the comprehensive utilization of lignocellulosic biomass into high-value multifunctional materials.

Thermosetting polymer-modified asphalt exhibits excellent high-temperature stability and mechanical performance, but its non-renewable raw materials and poor reparability and recyclability conflict with sustainable green pavement development. Therefore, based on the renewability of castor oil and the dynamic reversibility of disulfide bonds, a thermosetting bio-based self-healing polyurethane-modified asphalt (TBSPUA) was designed and prepared. The results showed that the modifier containing 20 % castor oil (TBSPU-20 %) achieved an optimal balance between mechanical performance and self-healing ability, making it suitable for asphalt modification, and TBSPUA samples with different dosages were prepared using TBSPU-20 % as the modifier. When the TBSPU content exceeded 50 wt%, phase inversion occurred, and the system transitioned from asphalt-dominated to polymer-network-dominated. At 55 wt% modifier content, TBSPUA reached a tensile strength of 3.61 MPa and an elongation at break of 134.3 %, achieving the best balance between strength and toughness. The fracture–healing–fracture test and fluorescence microscopy confirmed that TBSPUA achieved efficient self-healing under hot-pressing conditions, with a maximum healing efficiency of 69.81 %. The synergistic effects of disulfide and hydrogen bonds significantly improved interfacial healing and structural integrity. Fatigue-healing results showed that the healing index(HI) first increased and then decreased with dosage at 90 °C, with TBSPUA-55 wt% exhibiting the highest HI of 91.23 %, demonstrating excellent self-healing performance and dynamic stress relaxation capability.

Despite the advantages of low regeneration energy and corrosiveness, the CO 2 absorption loading capacity and regenerability of non-aqueous absorbents (NAAs) must be advanced to enable their viable practical application. This study introduced an innovative dual-activator strategy employing a tertiary amine and an alcohol to enhance both absorption and regeneration performance in primary amine–based NAAs. Experimental results showed that incorporating an appropriate amount of the tertiary amine N,N -dimethylethanolamine (DMEA) increased the CO 2 loading of the diamine 3-methylaminopropylamine (MAPA) to 1.54 mol·mol −1 MAPA, a 43.9% increase over the system without DMEA, while the addition of n-propanol (NPA) enabled highly efficient regeneration with 99.74% efficiency, a 27.2% improvement compared to the system without NPA. The absorbent also exhibited excellent cycling stability, maintaining 94.16% regeneration efficiency after five cycles. Mechanism investigations revealed that DMEA preferentially facilitated in the deprotonation of the MAPA-zwitterion during absorption, increasing the availability of free MAPA for CO 2 uptake and ultimately enhancing CO 2 absorption. During desorption, NPA served as a proton shuttle that redirected the proton transfer from a direct route to an indirect one via itself (protonated amine → NPA → MAPA-carbamate), significantly reducing the energy barrier. Meanwhile, NPA also participated in intermolecular proton exchange with the resulting carbamic acid, effectively promoting its thermal decomposition. Thermodynamics and corrosion analyzes confirmed that the optimized MAPA-DMEA-NPA system required only 0.43 GJ·ton −1 CO 2 in sensible and latent heat, 79.1% lower than the 30 wt% MEA solution, and exhibited negligible corrosiveness (2.5 × 10 −4 mm·year −1 on carbon steel). This work presented an effective dual-activator approach for designing high-performance NAAs with superior CO 2 capacity and regeneration stability, providing a promising pathway for advancing energy-efficient CO 2 capture technologies.

Polymer materials hold great promise for various applications but face trade-offs among stiffness, toughness, stretchability, and scalable fabrication. Here, we report a strategy that integrates dense side-chain hydrogen-bonding motifs capable of conformational transitions into a highly entangled flexible polymer network through photocuring copolymerization of acrylamide-based and hydroxyl-terminated acrylate monomers, enabling the rapid fabrication of stiff, tough, and stretchable polymers. The densely cross-linked structure restricts chain mobility, while hierarchical hydrogen bonds with partially low rotational energy barriers reversibly dissociate under strain, allowing the extensibility of the entangled network and continuous energy dissipation. The resulting polymers exhibit high Young’s modulus (515.0 ± 100.9 megapascals) and yield strength (57.8 ± 1.8 megapascals) while maintaining exceptional toughness (135.7 ± 10.7 megajoules per cubic meter) and fracture strain (400.1 ± 46.1%) and full strain recovery upon heating. These polymers can be fabricated into complex structures via three-dimensional printing and exhibit shape-memory, impact-resistant, and adhesive properties. This work establishes a generalizable strategy for designing high-performance polymer materials through simple photopolymerization.

High energy consumption during CO₂ desorption remains a critical bottleneck limiting the industrial application of monoethanolamine (MEA)-based carbon capture technologies. To address this issue, a novel high-efficiency catalyst, the 1:4-Ti@D composite catalyst based on diatomite and TiO(OH) 2 surface modification, was developed. Catalytic performance was evaluated in 30 wt% MEA solution at 90 °C. Compared with non-catalytic processes, the 1:4-Ti@D catalyst enhanced total CO₂ desorption amount by 46.2 % and maximum desorption rate by 125.1 %, while reducing desorption energy consumption by 39.2 %. Notably, it maintained stable catalytic efficiency after 10 consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, confirming its durability for industrial use. The physicochemical characteristics of the catalysts were comprehensively elucidated through various multi-dimensional characterization techniques. The experimental findings revealed that the synergistic effect of TiO(OH) 2 and diatomite substantially augmented the surface acid site density, while the optimized mesoporous structure facilitated efficient reactant transport, thereby underpinning the catalyst's exceptional performance. By the study of desorption mechanism, the stronger interaction between Ti and O of reactants can lead easier H 2 O and RNHCOO - absorption and activation. Moreover, an assessment of the catalyst's impact on thermal and oxidation degradation as well as the corrosion rate of MEA indicated minimal influence on amine degradation and corrosion processes. This work provides a new strategy for developing low-cost, high-stability clay-based catalysts and offers technical support for advancing energy-efficient industrial carbon capture systems.
