Fabrication of the MIL-101(Fe)@Ag composite SERS substrate for the detection of formaldehyde

Chen Yufeng,Zhao Ning

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been widely applied in various fields due to its high sensitivity and rapid response capability. In this paper, a MIL-101(Fe)@Ag composite SERS substrate was prepared using photoreduction method. The synthesized MIL-101(Fe)@Ag composite substrate combines the localized surface plasmon resonance properties of silver nanoparticles and the high adsorption capacity of metal–organic frameworks. MIL-101 (Fe)@Ag composite substrate was characterized by FTIR, UV and SEM. The SERS activity of the composite substrates was characterized by measuring the Raman signals of PATP. The detection limit of the substrate for PATP was 10 –8  M, with a relative standard deviation of only about 5.3%, indicating good SERS effect and reproducibility of the substrate. Finally, the prepared substrate was applied for formaldehyde detection, with a detection limit of 10 –9  M. Principal component analysis was used for quantitative analysis of formaldehyde. This work proposes a simple method for synthesizing MIL-101(Fe)@Ag composite substrates with high SERS performance and uniformity and establishes a rapid detection method for formaldehyde using this substrate, which has great application prospects.

Sensitive, Selective and Simultaneous Monitor of Multiple Heavy Metals in Environment Using a Low-Cost MIL-53(Fe)/Ag2CrO4 Modified GCE Sensor

Xiaomin Guo,Pinghua Chen,Hualin Jiang,Xiaoqiu Tang,Yiping Huang,Guanghui Wu,Jian Zhang

Due to the strong toxicity of heavy metal ions to public health and the environment, it is a great challenge to develop a method for ultra sensitive capture and determination of heavy metal ions effectively. Herein, a novel heterostructure composite (MIL-53(Fe)/Ag2CrO4, named MA(1:x)) was prepared by a simple method successfully. MA(1:x) modified GCE was applied to detect heavy metals ions simultaneously. Significantly, the designed MA(1:1)/GCE sensors performed outstanding detection performances. The wide ranges of 7.49 ∼ 320.00 μmol l−1 and 7.49 ∼ 320.04 μmol l−1 are obtained for Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions, respectively. The LOD of the MA(1:1)/GCE sensor was determined to be 27.40 nmol l−1 (5.68 ppb) for Pb(II) and 86.96 nmol l−1 (5.52 ppb) for Cu(II) ion simultaneously, which are lower than the allowable level of drinking water stipulated by the World Health Organization (WHO). Possible detection mechanism by the MA(1:1)/GCE was discussed. The MA(1:1)/GCE was successfully applied to monitor heavy metal ions locate in tap and river water. The recoveries are in the range of 93.86%–104.4%, which further proves the potential in analyzing real samples. Moreover, the MA(1:1)/GCE also showed excellent stability, selectivity, reproducibility. A novel method was provided to construct sensitive sensors for simultaneous analysis of different metal ions.

A novel magnetic carbon material derived from MIL-101 regulated by glycine for the highly efficient enrichment of sulfonamide antibiotics in water

Yuhui Xue,Changyan Guo,Jingjing Wang,Xueli Yang,Meng Wang,Jide Wang

The overuse of antibiotics poses a serious threat to the ecosystem. In particular, antibiotic residues in the aquatic environment are particularly serious. Therefore, preparation of efficient adsorbents for removing trace antibiotic residues from the environment becomes essential. In this work, a series of magnetic porous carbon material (Fe-MPC-gly) derived from MIL-101, which was regulated by glycine, were prepared by high temperature calcination for the adsorption of trace sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) in water. The morphology of MIL-101 was found to gradually change from a regular ortho-octahedron to an acicular spindle with the increase as the glycine content increased. The results of adsorption experiments showed that Fe-MPC-gly-2 had the best adsorption effect on SAs. In particular, the adsorption of Fe-MPC-gly-2 on SAs could reach the adsorption equilibrium in 5 min, and the maximum adsorption amounts were 50.0 mg·g −1 and 38.2 mg·g −1 for sulfameter and sulfachloropyridazine, respectively. The adsorption kinetic model was best fitted to the quasi-first-order kinetic model. The possible adsorption mechanisms were pore filling, hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions. Meanwhile, the synthetic strategy of this study provides an idea for the preparation of efficient adsorbents for antibiotics.

Metal organic framework MIL-101 coated fiber for headspace solid phase microextraction of volatile aromatic compounds

Xiaohuan Zang,Guijiang Zhang,Qingyun Chang,Xi Zhang,Chun Wang,Zhi Wang

A sol–gel coating technique was applied for the preparation of metal organic frameworks (MOFs)-based solid phase microextraction (SPME) fibers by coating MIL-101 onto stainless steel wires. The prepared fiber was explored for the headspace SPME (HS-SPME) of seven volatile aromatic compounds (VACs) from water samples followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometric analysis. Several important experimental parameters, such as extraction temperature, extraction time, sample volume, salt addition and desorption conditions, were investigated. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the developed HS-SPME method with MIL-101 coated fiber had a good linearity in the range of 0.05–50.0 μg L−1 for the analytes with the correlation coefficients (r) ranging from 0.9974 to 0.9988. Based on a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 3, the limits of detection (LODs) for the seven analytes ranged from 1.0 to 5.0 ng L−1. Compared with two commercial SPME fibers, the laboratory-made MIL-101 coated fiber showed a higher extraction efficiency for the seven VACs. The established method was successfully applied for the determination of the VACs in real local tap and lake water samples. The recoveries for the method of the seven VACs at spiking levels of 0.1 and 5.0 μg L−1 were in the range from 76.4% to 116.1%.

Accelerating the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle via enhanced electronic effect in NH2-MIL-88B(Fe)/TPB-DMTP-COF composite for boosting photo-Fenton degradation of sulfamerazine

Xiaolong Hu,Jingyu Bao,Daiwen Chen,Syed Jalil Shah,Sidra Subhan,Wenxue Gong,Wenyuan Li,Xinqi Luan,Zhongxing Zhao :,Zhenxia Zhao

In the photo-Fenton reactions, fast recombination of photoinduced electrons and holes in Fe-based metal–organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) slows Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle, which remains big challenge that significantly retards the overall process. Herein, NH 2 -MIL-88B(Fe) (NM88) was modified with 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid (DB) and TPB-DMTP-COF (COF-OMe) to in situ construct NM88(DB) 0.85 /COF-OMe composite that could strongly harvest the visible light for photo-Fenton degradation of sulfamerazine (SMR). With the addition of DB, electron-donating effect of NM88 was strengthened, which then promoted amino groups to react with aldehyde groups (Schiff-base), and thus highly facilitated the interfacial contact between NM88 and COF-OMe. Such modifications increased the degradation rate constants for NM88(DB) 0.85 /COF-OMe to 15.1 and 17.3 times that of NM88 and COF-OMe respectively with good reusability. Moreover, the catalyst exhibited 32–170 times higher degradation kinetics in comparison to other reported catalysts. Results showed that due to the Schiff-base reaction between NM88(DB) and COF-OMe, electron density on Fe(III) was decreased; and the photogenerated electrons of COF-OMe moved to NM88(DB) to reduce Fe(III), thus resulting in the generation of highly active Fe(II) and ·OH species. Furthermore, the main reactive species were determined to be ·OH and ·O 2 – by trapping experiments, and a possible mechanism of the degradation system followed Z-scheme charge transfer.

Fabrication of CdS/Pt/MIL-125 with Effective Spatial Separation for Improved Visible-Light Catalytic H2 Evolution Using γ-Ray Irradiation

Chen Tai,Huarong Liu,Yuan Hu

Hydrogen is a very promising green energy alternative to fossil fuel owing to both environmental friendliness and high-energy nature; however, improving the hydrogen production efficiency of photocatalysts under visible light has remained a challenge. Herein, CdS/Pt/MIL-125 nanocomposite has been fabricated using γ-ray irradiation, where Pt and CdS nanoparticles with clean surfaces are well dispersed inside and on the surface of MIL-125, respectively, which greatly promotes effective space separation of photogenerated carriers and thus improves the visible-light catalytic activity. The hydrogen generation rate of CdS/Pt/MIL-125 nanocomposite is found up to 6783.5 μmol/(g·h) under visible-light illumination, which is 7.3 times that of CdS/MIL-125 without Pt as electron trap reservoirs and 4.4 times that of Pt/CdS/MIL-125 without effective spatial separation between CdS and Pt. The reason is attributed to the synergy of ternary CdS/Pt/MIL-125 with a unique ordered mesoporous structure that may widen the absorption range of the light, improve the efficiency of light harvesting, facilitate mass transfer, prevent the aggregation of CdS and Pt nanoparticles, suppress the electron–hole (e–h) pair recombination, and provide more active sites. Moreover, the loading amount of Pt or CdS nanoparticles also affects the activity of CdS/Pt/MIL-125 nanocomposite for visible-light catalytic H2 evolution. In view of the extensive use of γ-ray irradiation in industry, this research presents a rational route to the fabrication of novel hybrid photocatalysts for improved visible-light catalytic hydrogen evolution.

Rapid identification of adulterated camel meat by MIL-101(Cr)-based fluorescent sensing platform: Surface potential adjustment to optimize detection performance

Jianmei Li,Qi Sun,Tuyatsetseg Jambal,Dulguun Dorjgotov,Na Su,Qiuju Wu,Jirimutu

To identify adulterated camel meat in emerging markets, there is an urgent need for sensitive, rapid, and convenient detection methods. In this study, a novel fluorescent sensing platform was developed to effectively identify pork components adulterated in camel meat by regulating the surface charge properties of MIL-101(Cr). Our data demonstrated that the modification of polyethylenimine (PEI) had minimal impact on the crystal structure of MIL-101(Cr). However, it significantly affected the adsorption behavior of MIL-101(Cr) towards 6-carboxyfluorescein (FAM) labelled DNA, thereby influencing the response of fluorescence quenching-recovery. Under optimal conditions, the proposed turn-on fluorescent biosensor, based on PEI-MIL-101(Cr) exhibited high sensitivity with a detection limit of 42 pM. It also demonstrated excellent selectivity for specific target DNA, successfully detecting a pork fraction of 0.45 % (w/w) in camel meat. This study was aimed to provide a fresh perspective on the potential application of functional materials derived from metal-organic frameworks in detecting food adulteration .

Efficient photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline under visible light by Z-scheme Ag3PO4/mixed-valence MIL-88A(Fe) heterojunctions: Mechanism insight, degradation pathways and DFT calculation

Zhenfei Yang,Xinnian Xia,Luhua Shao,Longlu wang,Yutang Liu

Herein, Ag 3 PO 4 /mixed-valence MIL-88A(Fe) [AMM] Z-scheme heterojunctions with an in-situ-generated photo–Fenton process were successfully constructed. The optimized AMM-20 heterojunctions show the maximum rate of photocatalytic TC degradation, which is 2.5 and 6.6 times of pristine Ag 3 PO 4 and MIL-88A(Fe). The electronic and band structures of Ag 3 PO 4 , MIL-88A(Fe), m-MIL-88A(Fe) and AMM heterojunctions were deeply investigated by both experimental and theoretical simulation. The Z-scheme transfer pathway greatly accelerates the transfer rate of charge carriers and effectively inhibits the photocorrosion, leading to the improvement of photocatalytic activity and photostability. Moreover, the adjustment of the Fe II /Fe III ratio of mixed-valence MIL-88A(Fe) further enhances the photocatalytic activity of the hybrid photocatalysts, benefiting from the promotion of the efficiency of the in-situ-generated photo-Fenton process. The Z-scheme transfer route coupling with an in-situ-generated photo–Fenton process was verified by the free radical trapping experiment, in-situ XPS measurement, in-situ ESR measurement, and coumarin fluorescence analysis. The degradation pathways of TC were determined through LC-MS analysis and theoretical calculation. Furthermore, the toxicity of intermediates was evaluated by QSAR prediction.

Embedding of SO3H-functionalized ionic liquids in mesoporous MIL-101(Cr) through polyoxometalate bridging: A robust heterogeneous catalyst for biodiesel production

Chong Chen,Fengqing Wang,Qiuhao Li,Yunlong Wang,Jun Ma

A robust heterogeneous catalyst SIL-PW/MIL-101(Cr) for biodiesel production was fabricated via a bottom-up strategy using phosphotungstic acid (HPW) as a bridge to integrate SO 3 H-functionalized ionic liquid (SIL) with MIL-101(Cr). The characterization results indicated that HPW was well dispersed in the cavities of MIL-101(Cr). The subsequently introduced ionic liquid reacted with HPW to form heteropolyanion-based ionic liquid, which could be embedded in the mesoporous cages. These newly-developed SIL-PW/MIL-101(Cr) exhibited considerable catalytic activity, with 94.3 % conversion of oleic acid . The comparison experiments manifested the enhanced catalytic performance was attributed to the Brønsted acid sites originating from -SO 3 H groups together with the Lewis acid sites. Moreover, the mesoporous structure of MIL-101(Cr) remained intact during immobilization process, which was beneficial for diffusion of large-sized reactants. Due to the bridging function of HPW, no obvious leaching of active component during recycling was observed and the conversion maintained 91.8 % after reused for five times, displaying satisfactory reusability. This study could open new avenues for designing heterogeneous catalysts with multiple active sites through bridging strategy.

Pore-Discriminative Pervaporation of Xylene Isomers Through In Situ Synthesized MIL-100(In) Membranes

Jinsuo Yu,Chenyang Jiang,Yanjun Wang,Zemin Li,Yawei Gu,Rujing Hou,Yichang Pan

Efficient xylene isomers’ separation remains a challenge due to their similar kinetic diameter and boiling points, particularly for the separation of the immediate size of meta-xylene (MX). A metal–organic framework (MOF) membrane offers the opportunity to realize the isomers’ separation due to the highly tunable pore size and pore environment. Herein, an In-based hierarchic MOF (MIL-100) with a size of 0.77 nm was screened, aiming at the realization for isomer separation through pore size matching. Meanwhile, the polar microenvironment in the MOF channel built through trimesic acid ligands contributes to the higher affinity to the MX relative to the PX. With the equimolar feed mixture of MX/PX, the optimal membrane demonstrated a total flux of 7.6 kg·m−2·h−1and an MX/PX separation factor of 2.54 at room temperature through pervaporation. Such performance highly indicates the possibility for efficient liquid xylene separation in future.

Metal-organic framework MIL-53 (Fe)@C/graphite carbon nitride hybrids with enhanced thermal stability, flame retardancy, and smoke suppression for unsaturated polyester resin

Zhongwei Chen,Tingting Chen,Yuan Yu,Qingwu Zhang,Zhiquan Chen,Juncheng Jiang

Metal-organic framework MIL-53 (Fe)@C/graphite carbon nitride hybrid (MFeCN), a novel flame retardant, was synthesized by hydrothermal reaction and subsequently added into unsaturated polyester resin (UPR). The structure, morphology, and thermal stability of MFeCN were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and thermogravimetric analysis (TG). The thermal stability and flammability of the UPR composites were characterized by TG and cone calorimeter tests (CCT). The results of CCT demonstrated that the peak heat release rate (pHRR), total heat release (THR), peak smoke production rate (pSPR), and total smoke production (TSP) of UPR/MFeCN-4 were reduced by 39.8%, 10.2%, 33.3%, and 14.5%, respectively, comparing with UPR. The results of TG and CCT indicated that MFeCN could improve the thermal stability, flame retardancy, and smoke suppression properties of the UPR composites. The residues after CCT were then characterized by laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS), XPS, and SEM. Finally, based on the above experimental results and analysis, the flame retardancy mechanism of MFeCN was proposed.

MoS2 nanoparticles/MIL-100(Fe) heterojunction with Type II interfacial charge transfer for efficient photocatalytic nitrogen reduction

Qi Chen,Xingxing Huang,Cheng Liu,Yueling Chen,Jionghua Wu,Jimmy C. Yu,Ling Wu

The attainment of rapid charge mobility and effective N 2 activation is of critical importance for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation but it has always been a challenge. Such challenge may be met by the construction of a Type II MoS 2 nanoparticles/ MIL-100(Fe) heterojunction photocatalyst. The new material possesses charge migration channels that facilitate the separation of photogenerated carriers. This charge redistribution during photocatalysis is confirmed by experimental results showing a decrease of charge density on the Fe species and an increase of that on Mo. Moreover, DFT calculations show that the adsorption of N 2 and H 2 O is more likely to occur on Fe sites and Mo sites, respectively. These findings clearly suggest a drastically improved spatial isolation of reduction and oxidation sites on the photocatalyst as compared to pristine MIL-100(Fe). The optimized MoS 2 /MIL-100(Fe) exhibits a NH 4 + yield rate of 1.29 μmol·h −1 as excellent utilization of photoinduced electron-hole pairs and effective adsorption and activation of N 2 become possible. This work offers an insight on the synergy of heterojunction engineering with coordinated activation for photocatalytic ammonia synthesis.
