Artificial enzymes have received much attention because of easy access, low cost and good stability. In this work, we report on a core–shell artificial peroxidase, namely, Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-100(Fe), which can catalyze the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by H 2 O 2 to produce a blue product. The combination of Fe 3 O 4 and MIL-100(Fe) can remarkably enhance peroxidase-like activity. The catalytic behavior of Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-100(Fe) followed Michaelis–Menten equation and the affinity of Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-100(Fe) to substrate was higher than horseradish peroxidase. Under the optimal conditions, the absorbance of oxidized TMB at 652 nm is linearly correlated with the concentration of H 2 O 2 . As H 2 O 2 is the oxidative product of cholesterol in the presence of cholesterol oxidase, a sensitive and selective method of cholesterol detection was also developed. As low as 0.8 μM of cholesterol could be detected with a linear range from 2 to 50 μM ( r = 0.999). The proposed method was successfully applied to the detection of cholesterol levels in serum samples. As an artificial peroxidase, Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-100(Fe) has advantages of high catalytic efficiency, low cost, good stability, easy preparation and storage. This work demonstrates that MOF-based materials hold great promise for applications in bioanalysis.

A MIL-100(Fe)/graphene oxide (GO) composite was prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method and utilized as a heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst for methyl orange (MO) degradation. The obtained catalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The effects of H2O2 dosage, initial pH and catalyst dosage on the degradation of MO were investigated. The MIL-100(Fe)/GO presented high catalytic activity for the degradation of MO, achieving almost complete decomposition of MO after 240 min with reaction conditions of 8 mM H2O2, pH of 3.0 and 0.5 g L−1 catalyst. Kinetics analysis showed that MO removal followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The catalyst showed stable catalytic activity and reusability after three successive runs. The possible catalytic mechanism of MIL-100(Fe)/GO was also proposed.

Nitro-aromatic compounds constitute predominant explosive materials extensively utilized in military applications and industrial blasting operations. However, the manufacturing, consumption, and decommissioning of these explosives generate significant quantities of wastewater exhibiting both ecotoxicological hazards and explosive potential. Herein, an amino-functionalized MIL-100(Fe) (AFM) catalyst demonstrating simultaneously enhanced explosive capture and degradation is developed. The synergistic interplay of electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding between the amino groups of AFM and nitro groups of nitro-aromatic explosive confer exceptional binding affinity. The optimized AFM exhibits a remarkable 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) adsorption of 14.93 mg/g, which is 3.6 times of unmodified MIL-100(Fe). In photo-Fenton reactions, the optimized AFM completely degrades TNT within 30 min, and achieves a mineralization efficiency as high as 96.7 %. Moreover, the AFM exhibits excellent stability, retaining a high TNT degradation efficiency of 97.7 % after five consecutive cycles. The currently designed AFM catalyst possessing fascinating explosive affinity and high explosive mineralization efficiency is expected to advance sustainable remediation of high-risk explosive wastewater.

Strontium oxide (SrO) is restricted by poor reusability and pore structure in catalyzing transesterification for biodiesel production. To address this problem, metal organic frameworks is employed as a carrier to support strontium carbonate by mechanical mixing method (MM) and in situ titration method (ST), and then calcined under inert atmosphere to obtain the catalyst of MM–SrO and ST–SrO. As a comparison, the reusability of pure SrO is compared and the homogeneous contribution of leached active sites for ST–SrO and MM–SrO are also assessed. The catalysts are characterized by TG, XRD, FTIR, EDS, Hammett indicator titration, nitrogen adsorption–desorption, and VSM. From the catalyst reusability, MM–SrO exhibits the excellent performance, where the maximum conversion of 96.19% is achieved at molar ratio of methanol to oil 12, catalyst addition 8 wt% (refer to oil), reaction temperature 65 °C within 30 min. And the conversion of 82.49% is still obtained at the third cycle, which could be easily separated from the mixture by external magnetic field after each cycle as well. In order to optimize the activation condition and investigate MM–SrO deeply, thermal characteristics of its corresponding precursor are further evaluated, where the TG experiments are conducted at heating rate of 20, 30, and 40 °C/min. and kinetic parameters are calculated through model–free method and Avrami theory, respectively.

The Heterogeneous Fenton reaction has long stood out as a highly effective technology for water purification. However, it is nowadays facing challenges such as low selectivity, sluggish Fe(III) reduction, and limited H 2 O 2 conversion efficiency. Herein, dehydrated MIL-100(Fe)-250 was synthesized through thermal treatment, demonstrating superior efficiency in removing emerging contaminants, with a three-fold efficiency higher than undehydrated sample. The dehydrated MIL-100(Fe)-250 exhibited selective acceleration in the removal of quinolones and phenolic organics, rendering the system resistant to interference from coexisting matter. Through in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy and density functional theory calculation, it was manifested that dehydration process regulates the steric hindrance and local electron density of Fe ions. This adjustment enhances charge transfer, thereby facilitating Fe(III) reduction and promoting the H 2 O 2 activation and conversion efficiency. Moreover, the quasi-steady-state concentrations of hydroxyl radical in MIL-100(Fe)-250 were found to be 2.2 times higher than that those in undehydrated sample. Impressively, the dehydrated MIL-100(Fe)-250 displayed adaptability across a broad pH range of 5.0–9.0. The present study underscores the significant potential of porous MIL-100(Fe)-250 with spatial confinement, which imparts a clear size exclusion effect. As a result, this catalyst emerges as a promising candidate for eliminating contaminants in real water matrices, offering a viable strategy for water pollution control.

The baseline separation of divinylbenzene (DVB) and ethylvinylbenzene (EVB) isomers was achieved using HPLC with MIL-53(Fe) and MIL-100(Fe) packed columns respectively when hexane/dichloromethane (100:0) used as mobile phase, at flow rate of 0.5 mL min −1 , room temperature, and monitored with a UV detector at 254 nm. The two Fe-based MILs packed columns showed different separated performances, analytes had short retention time on MIL-100(Fe) compared to MIL-53(Fe), but selectivity of DVB isomers (m-DVB and p-DVB) was lower, which was mainly due to the differences of the pore size and structure of MILs. Moreover, the results of calculated thermodynamic parameters showed that the separation of DVB and EVB isomers was not only controlled by enthalpy change (ΔH), but also controlled by entropy change (ΔS). The head-to-tail stacking was the main reason for the separation according to the mechanism of the DVB and EVB isomers on Fe-based MILs packed columns.

A simple mineralizer regulation strategy is developed to tune the structure of hydrothermal MIL-100(Fe). • NaHCO 3 enhances the surface area of MIL-100 (Fe), affording superior XO adsorption performance. • Synergistic pore adsorption, hydrogen bonding, Fe 3+ coordination and π-π stacking enable efficient XO removal. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising crystalline porous solids, whose functional properties are highly dependent on their crystallinity, defect states and pore characteristics. In this work, hydrothermal synthesis was employed to prepare MIL-100(Fe) materials modulated by three different mineralizers: sodium carbonate, acetic acid, and sodium bicarbonate; mineralizer-free pristine MIL-100(Fe) was used as the reference sample. The addition of mineralizers effectively modulates the crystal structure and porosity of MIL-100(Fe). All mineralizer-modified samples exhibit larger specific surface area compared with the pristine material. Among them, NaHCO 3 -regulated MIL-100(Fe) achieves the best adsorption performance toward xylenol orange (XO), which originates from its optimized porous structure. Adsorption experimental data fit well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity calculated by the Langmuir model reaches 155.28 mg/g, which is competitive with many reported adsorbents. Synergistic adsorption mechanisms, including pore-filling effect, hydrogen bonding, Fe 3+ complexation and π-π stacking interactions, have been elucidated. This work presents a facile mineralizer-mediated strategy for tuning the solid-state structural features of MIL-100(Fe), offering experimental insights for the structure-performance optimization of Fe-based MOF solids. Four microporous MIL-100(Fe) metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) synthesized with or without mineralizing agents by hydrothermal method were evaluated for their characteristics, water stability and adsorption performance towards Cr(VI). In the study, we compared two traditional mineralizing agents (i.e. hydrofluoric acid (HF) and tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide (TMAOH)) and an environmental-friendly mineralizing agent sodium carbonate (Na 2 CO 3 ) for the likelihood of quality improvement of MIL-100(Fe). Results showed that MIL-100(Fe) prepared using Na 2 CO 3 mineralizing agent exhibited excellent physicochemical property and higher adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) than the others. The adsorption of Cr(VI) on MIL-100(Fe)_Na 2 CO 3 fitted better with Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo first-order kinetics model. Desorption and regeneration of used MIL-100(Fe)_Na 2 CO 3 were achieved using NaOH (0.01 M) with a high desorption efficiency of 73% in four hours. Based on the improved structural characteristics and excellent adsorption performance of MIL-100(Fe)_Na 2 CO 3 , using the environmental friendly and low-cost Na 2 CO 3 as mineralizing agent could be an alternative and preferred pathway in the preparation of MOFs materials.

Heterogeneous photo-Fenton technology has drawn tremendous attention for removal of recalcitrant pollutants. Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) are regarded to be superior candidates in wastewater treatment technology . However, the central metal sites of the MOFs are coordinated with the linkers, which reduces active site exposure and decelerates H 2 O 2 activation. In this study, a series of 2, 5-dioxido-1, 4-benzenedicarboxylate (H 2 DOBDC)-functionalized MIL-100(Fe) with enhanced degradation performance was successfully constructed via solvothermal strategy. The modified MIL-100(Fe) displayed an improvement in photo-Fenton behaviors. The photocatalytic rate constant of optimized MIL-100(Fe)-1/2/3 are 2.3, 3.6 and 4.4 times higher compared with the original MIL-100(Fe). The introduced H 2 DOBDC accelerates the separation and transfer in photo-induced charges and promotes Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle, thus improving the performance. •OH and •O 2 − are main reactive radicals in tetracycline (TCH) degradation. Dealkylation, hydroxylation, dehydration and dealdehyding are the main pathways for TCH degradation.

Water pollution has emerged as a critical global challenge, with persistent antibiotic residues posing severe threats to ecosystems, calling for efficient aqueous remediation technologies. In this study, a MIL-100(Fe) −24 /MoS 2 hybrid catalyst was constructed by integrating MIL-100(Fe) with MoS 2 . The hybrid material served as a heterogeneous catalyst activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in a photo-Fenton system for tetracycline (TC) degradation, achieving 80% removal within 30 min. Quenching experiments verified the involvement of both radical and non-radical pathways, with SO 4 • − and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) identified as the dominant reactive species. The effects of key parameters including catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, and initial pH were systematically investigated. Degradation intermediates were analyzed, and the catalyst exhibited satisfactory reusability and stability.

Efficient photocatalytic abatement of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) critically relies on effective separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Constructing S-scheme heterojunctions is an effective strategy to promote charge separation while preserving strong redox potentials. Herein, WO 3 /MIL-100(Fe) composites featuring interfacial Fe-O-W bonds were synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal method for photocatalytic degradation of gaseous toluene. The optimized 15%WO 3 /MIL-100(Fe) heterojunction exhibits a 1.3-fold enhancement in toluene removal efficiency (52.6%) and twice the CO 2 conversion rate relative to pristine MIL-100(Fe), along with enhanced degradation for o-xylene and styrene, demonstrating broad-spectrum applicability. The interfacial internal electric field (IEF) in WO 3 /MIL-100(Fe) promotes efficient charge carrier separation and accelerates electron transfer. The S‑scheme heterojunction directs the reductive electrons in the MIL-100(Fe) conduction band and oxidative holes in the WO 3 valence band to generate superoxide radicals (•O 2 ⁻) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH), respectively, enabling efficient ring opening and deep degradation. Moreover, the load of WO 3 enhances Lewis acidity and introduces additional adsorption sites, strengthening the interaction with toluene. This work highlights the rational design of MOF-based S-scheme heterojunctions for durable volatile organic compound abatement.

MIL-100(Fe, Cr) and MIL-101(Cr) were synthesized by the hydrothermal method and applied to the adsorptions of five aromatic amines from aqueous solutions. These three metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were well characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and surface area analysis. The adsorption mechanism of three MOFs and the effects of the structures of MOFs on the adsorption of aromatic amines were discussed. The results show that the cavity system and suitable hydrogen bond acceptor were important factors for the adsorption for five aromatic amines of aniline, 1-naphthalamine, o-toluidine, 2-amino-4-nitrotoluene and 2-nitroaniline: (a) the saturated adsorption capacity of aniline, 1-naphthylamine and o-toluidine on MIL-100(Fe) were 52.0, 53.4 and 49.6 mg/g, respectively, which can be attributed to the intermolecular hydrogen bond interaction and cavity system diffusion. (b) The adsorption capacity of 2-nitroaniline and 2-amino-4-nitrotoluene on MIL-101(Cr) were 54.3 and 25.0 mg/g, respectively, which can be attributed to the more suitable pore size of MIL-101(Cr) than that of MIL-100(Fe, Cr). The MOFs of MIL-100(Fe) and MIL-101(Cr) can be potential materials for removing aromatic amines from aqueous solutions.Keywords:metal-organic framework;adsorption;aromatic amines;aniline;1-naphthalamine;o-toluidine;2-amino-4-nitrotoluene;2-nitroaniline
