Durable and Robust Self-Healing Superhydrophobic Co-PDMS@ZIF-8-Coated MWCNT Films for Extremely Efficient Emulsion Separation

Hanchen Ye,Dongyun Chen,Najun Li,Qingfeng Xu,Hua Li,Jinghui He,Jianmei Lu

The discharge of large amounts of sewage has caused enormous damage to the environment and human health. There is an urgent need for efficient and environmentally friendly materials to deal with such troubles. Materials with emulsion separation have attracted everyone’s attention. In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-8- and Co-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-modified multiwalled carbon nanotube films were fabricated. First, the surface of the nanotube films was modified with ZIF-8 by in situ growth, and then a Co-PDMS layer was added by dip coating. The membrane has excellent wettability, and it is superhydrophobic and superoleophilic in air. The separation efficiency of water-in-oil emulsions reaches more than 99.9%, and it has an outstanding separation ability for corrosive emulsions. Moreover, the membrane has an excellent self-healing ability, and it can rapidly heal at normal temperature after being damaged. This makes the film more suitable for practical oily wastewater treatment. We performed related research and propose a possible self-healing mechanism.

A coated 3D-printed polymer metamaterial with ultra-broadband effective absorption using a MWCNT-carbonyl iron powder composite

Jiayu Liu,Yan Li,Xueling Hu,Dhandapani Kuzhandaivel,Lixin Wu,Vigneshwaran Muniyandi,Jianlei Wang

In this study, we developed a coated Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) three-dimensional (3D)-printed polymer metamaterial with ultra-broadband effective absorption using a composite coating of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and carbonyl iron powder (CIP). The integration of MWCNT with CIP was employed to synergistically optimize the electromagnetic parameters. The optimal component ratio was identified and applied as a coating layer on a 3D-printed truncated cone pyramid structure. CST Microwave Studio simulation software was used to optimize the structure and analyze the effects of the electromagnetic parameters, dimensions, polarization angle, and incidence angle on absorption performance. The optimized periodic structure exhibited a peak reflection loss of −49.56 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth of 14.37 GHz (3.63–18 GHz), with an average effective absorption rate of 89.8% across the 2–18 GHz range. The absorber demonstrated polarization insensitivity and wide-angle absorption capability. An optimized coated truncated cone metamaterial was successfully fabricated using FDM 3D printing, and the experimental results were in good agreement with the simulations. The absorber accounted for only 9.3 wt% of the total mass, highlighting the advantages of this approach in achieving broadband absorption along with lightweight and low-cost characteristics through the integration of 3D printing and coating techniques.

Enhancement of photothermal conversion and thermal conductivity in biochar-based composite PCM: Dual impact of MXene and MWCNT

Ge Zhu,Qianqian Yin,Zeren Rao,Ruikun Wang,Zhenghui Zhao,Jianqiang Li

Phase change energy storage technology is an important means of efficient energy utilization. To enhance the competitiveness of biochar-based composite phase change materials (PCMs), this study improves the encapsulation capability of white pine biochar through oleophobic modification while incorporating MXene and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) to enhance the photothermal conversion capability and thermal conductivity of the carbon materials. The resultant supporting material, BC-MM, was successfully combined with paraffin wax (PW) to create an enhanced composite PCM (PW/BC-MM), exhibiting a melting enthalpy of 117.0 J/g. Furthermore, the composite exhibits a degree of supercooling that is higher than that of pure PW. This phenomenon is attributed to the nanoconfinement effect of the biochar mesopores, confirming effective physical encapsulation. Results indicate that the PW/BC-MM composite achieved a high PW loading of 88.16 % with an encapsulation efficiency of 85.18 %. Moreover, the thermal conductivity of PW/BC-MM reached 0.571 W/(m·K), representing a 313.77 % enhancement over pure PW. In the photothermal conversion capability test, the temperature change of PW/BC-MM is 22.1 °C higher than that of the unenhanced composite PCM (PW/BC). Additionally, tests on UV–visible light absorption indicate that the incorporation of the enhanced materials significantly improves the radiation absorption capability of biochar. BC-MM exhibits absorption increases of 21.16 % and 30.67 % in the visible and NIR regions, respectively, compared to oleophobic biochar (BC). Therefore, the biochar-based composite PCM prepared in this study possesses good photothermal conversion capability and thermal conductivity, resulting in a broader application scope.

Hierarchical structure of MWCNT reinforced semicrystalline HDPE composites: A contrast matching study by neutron and X-ray scattering

Dong Liu,Xueyu Li,Hongtao Song,Pucheng Wang,Jie Chen,Qiang Tian,Liangwei Sun,Liang Chen,Bo Chen,Jian Gong,Guangai Sun

Combining neutron and X-ray scattering (SANS, SAXS, and WAXD) as the contrast matching probes, the hierarchical structures of the multi-wall carbon nanotubes/high density polyethylene (MWCNTs/HDPE) composites (0.1–2.0 wt%) have been studied. SANS measurement avoided the correlation peak associated to the semicrystalline nature of HDPE from SAXS, and the passible scattering from the stretch induced voids. Benefitting from SANS data, the power law ( α ) taking the flexible cylinder suggested that whole MWCNTs in the unstretched composites follow a self-avoiding random walk ( α  ≈ 1.67). SANS data suggest a hollow flexible cylinder structure with outer and inner diameters (core-shell-like cross section) of the scatterers as ca. 12.6 nm and 4.1 nm, while the Kuhn length is about 43.0 nm. Tensile test displayed improved mechanical properties. Interestingly, the Hermans orientation parameter ( f ) of HDPE crystals ( f c ) in the stretched composites are around a plateau ca. 0.96 initially, while decreased remarkably to 0.776 when the fraction is further increased to 2.0 wt%. f obtained by SANS showed a similar tendency (decreased from 0.756 to 0.572). Combining all the results along with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement, a mechanism of adhered crystals on the surface of MWCNTs and a reinforcement model are proposed.

Nondestructive cyclic strain evaluation of seismic isolation bearings using Si-69-modified MWCNT/silicone rubber self-sensing composites

Bangwei Wan,Jianping Shi,Yong Yuan,Yang Yang,Rongxin Guo,Yong Yan

Conductive elastomer composites are promising for large-deformation sensing and structural health monitoring, but their QNDE application is limited by unstable electromechanical responses, resistance hysteresis, and disordered conductive-pathway rearrangement during cyclic loading. Here, a Si-69-induced siloxane interfacial network regulation strategy was developed for hydroxylated multi-walled carbon nanotube/methyl vinyl silicone rubber (MWCNT-OH/VMQ) composites for cyclic strain evaluation of seismic isolation bearings. Si-69 constructed an in situ Si–O–Si/Si–O–C-rich interfacial layer on MWCNT-OH, forming MOB conductive elastomer composites. The optimized MOB7.5 wt% composite increased tensile strength and elongation at break by approximately 52% and 59.53%, respectively, and achieved an apparent gauge factor of 49.01, a strain-monitoring range of 391.84%, and a dynamic tensile-loading response time of 220 ms. Experimental characterisation and molecular dynamics simulations indicated improved filler dispersion, strengthened filler–matrix coupling, restricted segmental motion, reduced free volume, and increased interfacial binding energy, promoting a more reversible conductive network. A robust AE–CNN–LSTM framework enabled resistance-signal characterisation, strain-history reconstruction, and few-shot calibration. In preliminary bearing-level monitoring, MOB7.5 wt% generated continuous resistance signals under bidirectional compression–shear deformation and showed sensitivity to local strain heterogeneity through bifurcated resistance peaks.

Breaking the corrosive solvent paradigm: Scalable wet-spinning of PPTA/MWCNT composite fibers with unprecedented strength-functionality balance

Fengdong Teng,Ying Yuan,Na Li,Yutong Cao,Junrong Yu,Yan Wang,Zuming Hu

Currently, the high performance and multifunctional integration of poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) fibers are still facing the limitations of the use of corrosive solvents and the poor dispersion of functional fillers in the polymer matrix. Herein, PPTA prepolymers with controlled degrees of polymerization were designed as macromolecular monomers and co-dispersed with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) in a composite medium consisting of polar solvent and co-solvent to synthesize a high molecular weight PPTA/MWCNT (PMC) solution via in situ secondary polymerization. The non-covalent adsorption of MWCNT by the prepolymer molecules combined with a mild secondary polymerization process ensured the homogeneous dispersion of MWCNT in PPTA solution. Subsequently, the PMC solution was processed into fibers by an efficient and controllable wet spinning process, and the strength and modulus of PMC fibers were as high as 1.61 GPa and 51.5 GPa. Furthermore, the three-dimensional conductive-thermal network formed by MWCNT endowed PMC fabrics with an electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of 32.6 dB in the X-band and enhanced thermal conductivity by 58.2 % compared with pure PPTA fabrics. This work provides a scalable and environmentally benign strategy for manufacturing high-strength PPTA fibers and their multifunctional fabrics.

Water adsorption kinetics and thermal storage performance of MgSO4/MWCNT/Al-based MOF composite materials for energy storage

Zhuo Chang,Decheng Kong,Yunfeng Wang,Ming Li,Qingyun Li,Tarik Hadibi,Xudong Zhao

Thermochemical energy storage technology stands as a promising avenue to address the intermittent and fluctuating nature of solar energy. However, it poses significant challenges due to the inadequate adsorption performance of adsorbents and limited heat and mass transfer capacity. In this research, a composite adsorption heat storage material, denoted as AF-CNT-Mg, was successfully synthesized, demonstrating high water adsorption and excellent heat transfer capacity. This material was developed using aluminum fumarate (AF) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNT) as a composite matrix, with magnesium sulfate acting as impregnated hygroscopic salt. The influence of CNT content and magnesium sulfate mass fraction on thermal conductivity and water adsorption properties was thoroughly investigated. Results indicate that increasing CNT concentration enhances heat storage performance while diminishing water adsorption performance. Consequently, an AF-CNT matrix with a CNT mass fraction of 0.2 wt% was chosen as the composite matrix. The texture and thermal properties of AF-CNT-Mg composites were analyzed through automated specific surface area and pore size analysis, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetry, and differential scanning calorimetry. Furthermore, the effects of varying concentrations of impregnated metal ions on water adsorption properties were explored. Interestingly, a significant enhancement in the water adsorption performance and heat storage capacity was observed. The energy storage density could reach 838.4 kJ·kg −1 , with a maximum water adsorption amount of 0.53 kgH 2 O·kg −1 . Overall, these findings demonstrate that incorporating CNT expansion and hygroscopic salt magnesium sulfate into the al-based metal–organic framework substantially improves the heat storage performance of the composite adsorption heat storage material. Such advancements hold promising implications for applications in solar thermal power generation systems.

Guoping Wang,Tian Tang,Ruichen Liu,Jingwen Li,Yi Xu,Sen Liao

By utilizing carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-COOH) to strengthen the interaction between the electrode and the analytes and improve the conductivity of the composite material and in conjunction with the superior catalytic properties of copper-based metal–organic framework (MOFs), a novel electrochemical sensor was fabricated from a Cu-MOF/MWCNT-COOH composite, specifically designed for the simultaneous and distinct detection of ascorbic acid (AA) and dopamine (DA). Electrochemical analyses were conducted on the innovative Cu-MOF/MWCNT-COOH electrode through both CV and DPV, revealing unique electrochemical behaviors for AA and DA. The sensor not only showed exceptional electrocatalytic properties but also distinguished itself by its broad dynamic response ranges, covering concentrations from 3 to 1800 μM for AA and from 2 to 180 μM for DA, with detection limits (S/N = 3) of 3.00 μM for AA and 0.32 μM for DA. Furthermore, this electrochemical detection platform exhibited robust reproducibility and selectivity. Examinations of serum samples yielded the recovery rates of AA and DA which were 101.9% and 102.1%, respectively, confirming the sensor’s capability to perform reliably under varied biological conditions. The findings confirm the sensor’s potential of the proposed method for the simultaneous, sensitive, and reliable detection of AA and DA. In conclusion, the electrochemical sensor has a promising potential for practical applications.

S/MWCNt/LLZO composite electrode with e−/S/Li+ conductive network for all-solid -state Lithium–Sulfur batteries

Fei Chen,Yiluo Zhang,Qing Hu,Shiyu Cao,Shangbin Song,Xinqi Lu,Qiang Shen

Traditional liquid lithium-sulfur batteries have two key problems: poor safety and shuttle effect . These two challenges can be overcome by using solid-state electrolytes. But poor ionic and electronic conductivity due to solid/solid contact between the electrode and the electrolyte for all-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries (ASSLSBs). Here, we have synthesized Li 6.4 Ga 0.2 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) conductive ceramics with high ionic conductivity . LLZO is used as the lithium-ion conductor and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNt) are used as the electronic conductor to form S/MWCNt/LLZO by the thermal diffusion method, resulting in an e − /S/Li + conductive network. The prepared S/MWCNt/LLZO composite material, composite solid electrolyte, and lithium metal are assembled into ASSLSBs. After 50 cycles, the high capacity of 825 mAh·g −1 is maintained with 72.62% capacity retention at 0.2C and 45 °C. The higher capacity indicates the success of forming a conductive network that can improve the electrochemical performance of ASSLSBs. At 0.2C, the capacity of the S/MWCNt/LLZO composite cathode remains at 873 mAh·g −1 after 60 cycles when the operating temperature is increased to 60 °C, indicating good cycle performance.

Impact of MWCNT/Al on the combustion behavior of hydroxyl ammonium nitrate (HAN)-based electrically controlled solid propellant

Lirong Bao,Wei Zhang,Xiaojun Zhang,Yongyi Chen,Suhang Chen,Lizhi Wu,Ruiqi Shen,Yinghua Ye

In the controllable combustion field, hydroxyl ammonium nitrate (HAN)-based electrically controlled solid propellants (ECSPs) is of growing interest in green fuels with safety, throttle- ability and at-will on-off capability. However, the current research is confined to the ignition characteristics and ablation process of basic ECSP formulations (75 wt% HAN ionic liquid oxidizer , 5 wt% ammonium nitrate co-oxidizer and 20 wt% polyvinyl alcohol binder), rather than working in functional additives. Herein, multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and nano/micro aluminum powders were introduced in ECSPs, facilitating electrical conductivity and energy release. It indicates that the homogeneous dispersed MWCNT in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) microspheres , preparing by the micro-segmented flow method, results in a 9.8% increase in electrical conductivity of the ECSPs. At 0.5 MPa, ECSPs containing 1%, 3% and 5% 5 µm aluminum powder reinforce the burning rate by 38.0%, 186.3%, 214.7% and mass ablation by 10.7%, 95.2%, 175.6% at 200 V, yet the large heat release by excess aluminum powder shifts the non-self-sustaining combustion of ECSPs to self-sustaining combustion at high pressure (above 0.8 MPa). The mechanism of promoting ECSPs combustion by liberating aluminum-nitric acid (released by HAN ionization) reaction were proposed.

Structure–Property Regulation of PA5T/56 Copolyamides and Dual-Responsive Shape-Memory Behavior of Their MWCNT-COOH Composites

Jiaying Liu,Guang Nie,Shuai Yang,Yanmin Zhang,Ziyun Li,Sitong Wang,Zijian Song,Shuanli Du,Yingchun Li

Semi-aromatic polyamides (SAPAs) are emerging as promising engineering polymers due to their unique combination of high rigidity, thermal stability, and processability. However, pure SAPAs suffer from limited electrical conductivity and multifunctional responsiveness, hindering their application in smart materials and actuators. In this paper, PA5T/56 copolyamides with varying terephthalic acid/adipic acid molar ratios (3/7–7/3) were synthesized via melt polycondensation and characterized mainly by 1 H NMR, FTIR. PA5T/56 (3/7), with the optimal balance of mechanical performance and processability, was selected as the composite matrix. Composites containing different contents of carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-COOH, 0, 5, 10, 15 wt%) were prepared by solution casting. The effects of MWCNT-COOH on the thermal stability, mechanical properties, and especially thermo- and electro-induced shape memory behaviors of the composites were comprehensively investigated. The results show that MWCNT-COOH markedly improves the thermo-induced shape memory at an appropriate loading, with the shape recovery rate reaching 82.8% and the shape fixity rate exceeding 90% at 10 wt% MWCNT-COOH. 15 wt% MWCNT-COOH/PA5T/56 can achieve electro-induced shape recovery via Joule heating within 44 s. Overall, this work establishes the structure–property relationships of PA5T/56 copolyamide with tailored monomer compositions and demonstrates the effectiveness of MWCNT-COOH in imparting thermo- and electro-responsive functionalities.

Synergistically enhanced thermal conductivity sensor based on AlN@h-BN/MWCNT nanocomposite for SF6 leakage monitoring in GIS

Faxun Wang,Junyi Lin,Yuxuan Huang,Jiguang Zhao,Bing Tian,Liang Zhao,Bofeng Luo,Zhenliang Ye,Hao Yang,Guotao Duan

Reliable, drift-resistant monitoring of SF 6 enrichment in air near gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) leak points remains challenging for compact and low-cost sensing nodes. Here we report a thermal-conductivity-differential sensor enabled by a materials-circuit co-design: a hierarchical AlN@h-BN/MWCNT nanocomposite coating is integrated onto a Pt-coil element and read out by a Wheatstone bridge with a sealed reference arm and differential amplification. The ternary architecture exhibits a well-developed mesoporous framework with a high BET surface area (111.03 m 2 ·g −1 ), promoting efficient gas transport within the sensing layer and strengthening the thermal-conductivity-induced perturbation of the bridge balance. Under synthetic dry air (21% O 2 /79% N 2 ) at 25 ± 1℃, the output is monotonic over 0.1–5.0% SF 6 , with a recommended linear regime of 0.1–1.0% for quantitative readout; the baseline noise (σ air = 0.16 mV) yields an estimated LOD (3σ) of 0.0654% (∼654 ppm), while 0.1% is the lowest experimentally validated concentration. The optimized excitation voltage (3.0 V) maximizes response by balancing gas-phase modulation against increased non-gaseous heat losses at higher temperatures. The sensor shows reversible cycling (52/23 s response/recovery), humidity-tolerant operation (± 8% deviation over 20–80% RH), and < 5% degradation over 90 days; as expected for a TCD-type mechanism, cross-responses are governed by thermal conductivity rather than chemical selectivity.
