HKUST-1 derived Cu(II)/Cu(I)-doped carbon catalyst for enhancing MgH2 hydrogen storage performance

Shijie Cao,Quanquan Li,Hui Yun,Boyu Zhang,Zhixue Wang,Xiaowen Wang,Jing Bai,Xiaodong Wang,Yunhua Xu

Magnesium Hydride (MgH 2 ) is a promising hydrogen storage material but suffers from a high dehydrogenation temperature and sluggish sorption kinetics, which hinder its practical application. Accordingly, we report the use of a Cu-based metal-organic framework (HKUST-1) derived carbon material as a catalyst for optimizing the MgH 2 hydrogen storage performance. The MgH 2 containing 10 wt% HKUST-1 (denoted as MgH 2 -HKUST-1) exhibits a maximum dehydrogenation temperature of 50 °C, much lower than pure MgH 2 . Additionally, it demonstrates enhanced hydrogenation dynamics: it adsorbs 6.4 wt% H 2 within 240 s when heated to 350 °C, and even at 200 °C, it still captures 5.7 wt% H 2 in 60 min. Moreover, the dehydrogenation activation energy is 85.01 kJ per mole of H 2 , showing a marked reduction compared to pure MgH 2 . Furthermore, the excellent H 2 storage performance perhaps stems from the synergistic interaction of Cu 2+ /Cu + redox reactions, mechanochemical size effects, and in situ carbon scaffolding.

Composition-dependent catalytic behavior of Nb2C/Ti3C2 dual MXenes for enhanced hydrogen sorption kinetics of MgH2

Kunxian Chen,Qian Zhou,Yujie Fu,Hao Wang,Xiaolian Wang

Pristine Nb 2 C/Ti 3 C 2 dual MXenes enable composition-controlled MgH 2 catalysis. • A 1:2 Nb 2 C/Ti 3 C 2 ratio is optimal at only 5 wt% total catalyst loading. • 6.81 wt% H 2 is released within 3 min at 300 °C. • 4.56 wt% H 2 is absorbed within 20 s at 50 °C under 55 bar H 2 . • 91%/90% capacity is retained after 30 hydrogenation/dehydrogenation cycles. MXene catalysts can improve MgH 2 kinetics, but composition effects in dual pristine MXenes at fixed loading remain unclear. Here, Nb 2 C/Ti 3 C 2 was optimized by Nb 2 C etching time, single-MXene loading, mass ratio, and total loading. Nb 2 C etched for 70 h showed low residual Al, intact layers, and the highest surface area. At 5 wt% total catalyst, Nb 2 C:Ti 3 C 2 = 1:2 gave the best overall performance. It released 6.81 wt% H 2 in 3 min at 300 °C and 6.02 wt% in 10 min at 250 °C, and absorbed 4.56 wt% H 2 in 20 s at 50 °C under 55 bar H 2 . The apparent dehydrogenation activation energy was 71.25 ± 8.73 kJ·mol −1 , 53.7% below the MgH 2 reference. After 30 cycles, hydrogenation/dehydrogenation capacity retentions were 91%/90%. XRD and SEM confirmed reversible MgH 2 /Mg conversion and cycling-related morphology changes. XPS survey of the optimized dual-MXene composite confirmed the coexistence of Ti- and Nb-containing species, while reaction-state XPS of the individual Ti 3 C 2 - and Nb 2 C-containing composites showed reaction-dependent surface reconstruction. Together, these results support composition-dependent catalytic contributions, whereas simultaneous Ti-Nb reconstruction in the optimal dual system remains unverified.

Elastic Framework Driven Mg2+ Autocapture and Autocatalysis: Mechanistic Origin of Fast Hydrogen Release in 2LiBH4–MgH2

Kai Jia,Fuying Wu,Beibei Xiao,Ting Bian,Petr Senin,Daifen Chen,Liuting Zhang

en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section The protracted incubation time has long been the Achilles' heel of the promising 2LiBH 4 –MgH 2 hydrogen storage system. Instead of the usual route-creating heterogeneous nucleation sites to hasten MgB 2 formation, we shortened both de- and re-hydrogenation incubation periods by steering the Mg transformation itself. Herein, this paper engineered a Prussian blue analog whose surface charge landscape traps Mg 2+ and the released electrons in a non-stoichiometric lattice, keeping them instantly available for MgB 2 nucleation. Theory and experiment show that CoFe–PBA stores both ions and electrons. Under the same experimental temperature, the optimized LiBH 4 –MgH 2 hydrogen storage system demonstrates remarkable performance improvements: Its incubation period is significantly reduced to just one seventh that of the original hydrogen storage material, achieving a leap forward in reaction kinetics efficiency. The above concept provides a versatile tool for any catalytic system constrained by nucleation delays and opens new avenues for energy-related research. 摘要 en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section 2LiBH 4 –MgH 2 高容量储氢体系的实际应用长期受限于漫长的MgB 2 成核孕育期。

Suppression efficiency and mechanism of low-temperature phase-transition composite explosion suppressants for MgH2 dust explosions

Shuqi Zhang,Zhenmin Luo,Fanyi Meng,Tao Wang,Bin Su,Yong Yang

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) dust poses a higher explosion hazard than metallic Mg because dehydrogenation releases H 2 , which promotes gas-phase chain reactions and flame acceleration. Hydrated salts are promising suppressants for hydrogen-related explosions because their dehydration can absorb heat and release water vapor for dilution. In this study, a SiO 2 -modified sodium carbonate decahydrate phase-change suppressant, denoted as NWD, was prepared from Na 2 CO 3 ·10H 2 O and hydrophobic nano-SiO 2 to suppress MgH 2 dust explosions. NaHCO 3 was also tested as a conventional sodium-based suppressant for comparison. At an inerting ratio of 3.0, NWD reduced P max to 0.368 MPa and K st to 3.013 MPa m/s, corresponding to reductions of 70% and 94.3%, respectively, while the Pmax of the NaHCO 3 -treated system remained at 0.672 MPa. NWD suppresses MgH 2 dust explosions through synergistic heat absorption, water-vapor dilution, porous condensed-phase coating, oxygen/heat-transfer blocking, and sodium-related radical scavenging. This work provides a potential strategy for the safe storage and utilization of MgH 2 .

Dual site multi-channel co-catalytically enhanced kinetic properties of high capacity MgH2–NiFe/CoFe composites

Chenlu Wang,Xiaojiang Hou,Duode Zhao,Danting Li,Xinlei Xie,Peixuan Zhu,Xiaohui Ye,Guoquan Suo,Guang Yang,Yanling Yang

Magnesium-based solid hydrogen storage technology is anticipated to enhance the extensive utilization of hydrogen energy due to its secure and reversible hydrogen storage characteristics. Nonetheless, the intrinsic high Mg–H bond energy and surface dissociation energy of MgH 2 result in severe operating conditions and reduced efficiency. This work proposes a NiFe/CoFe nanocatalyst exhibiting a dual-site multichannel effect, which is incorporated into MgH 2 for surface catalysis using a brief high-energy ball milling technique. The surface-catalyzed composites can release over 90 % of the potential hydrogen storage capacity with a single activation. The MgH 2 -10 wt%NiFe/CoFe composite can absorb 4.88 wt% of H 2 at 150 °C. The release peak temperature of H 2 of MgH 2 -5wt.%NiFe/CoFe was markedly decreased to 281.01 °C, representing a reduction of 162.6 °C relative to ball milled state MgH 2 (BM-MgH 2 ). The Ea for dehydrogenation was markedly decreased to 71 kJ/mol, attributed to the dual-site adsorption of NiFe/CoFe catalysts and the multi-channel diffusion within the multiphase system. These factors facilitate the absorption and dissociation of H-atoms, thereby enhancing the kinetic properties of MgH 2 . This study provides valuable insights for designing multicomponent composite metal nano-catalysts and the advancement of MgH 2 hydrogen storage composites.

Polymeric carbon nitride supported single-phase Ni with exceptional catalytic effect on MgH2 for hydrogen storage

Xinyu Liu,Xixi Meng,Tao Zhong,Yuxin Wang,Fuying Wu,Hu Liu,Hong Li,Liuting Zhang

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) with its high hydrogen storage capacity (7.6 wt%) and exceptional reversibility, has emerged as a promising solid-state hydrogen storage material. This study designed a polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) supported single-phase Ni catalyst with superior thermal stability and catalytic activity. The optimized PCN-Ni catalyst significantly reduced the initial dehydrogenation temperature of MgH 2 to 192 ºC. At 295 ºC, the composite released 6.10 wt% H 2 within 5 min, and it subsequently absorbed 5.50 wt% H 2 within 5 min at 150 ºC. Compared to pristine MgH 2 , the activation energies for dehydrogenation and hydrogen absorption were reduced by 31.6 % and 29.4 %, respectively. Moreover, the MgH 2 + 10 wt% PCN-Ni composite exhibited remarkable cycling stability, with capacity retention rates of 96.0 % and 96.7 % after 20 hydrogenation/dehydrogenation cycles. In conclusion, this work provides a new perspective on the heterogeneous synergy of transition metal and carbon nitride composite catalysts in promoting the dehydrogenation/rehydrogenation reactions of MgH 2 and lays the foundation for the design and fabrication of highly efficient catalysts in other energy storage related fields.

Enhancing hydrogen sorption performances of MgH2 by in-situ introduction of molybdate derived FeMo nano catalysts

Jiaqi Zhang,Liansen Bian,Ning Zhang,Bolun Wang,Shusheng Cao,Xusheng Wang,Yingyan Zhao,Longfei Shao,Rui Yang,Yanyue Wang,Hao Du,Jiaze Yan,Yan Zhang,Xi Lin,Jianxin Zou

The design and construction of efficient catalysts for Mg-based hydrogen storage materials are of great importance for promoting their industrial applications. In the present work, a composite of g-C 3 N 4 (NCN) supported FeMoO 4 was prepared and introduced into MgH 2 as a catalyst precursor through ball milling. As a result of the reaction between FeMoO 4 and MgH 2 , a nano FeMo catalyst formed in-situ and provides excellent catalytic effect on MgH 2 . For instance, the catalyzed Mg/MgH 2 system started to dehydrogenate at about 187 °C, with a total dehydrogenation of 6.1 wt% achieved in 6 min at 275 °C. It can absorb 6 wt% H 2 in 2 min under 3 MPa pressure at 150 °C. Meantime, the hydrogen desorption and absorption activation energy of the composite system dropped down to 85.3 kJ/mol H 2 and 44.72 kJ/mol H 2 , respectively. Furthermore, the presence of g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets (NCN) provides a good nano-separation effect for MgH 2 , and the composite system exhibits high cycling stability (95.3 % capacity retention after 50 cycles) and fast kinetic. Theoretical calculation shows that the interaction between FeMo and MgH 2 weakened the Mg-H bond, thus promoting the decomposition of MgH 2 at lower temperatures. This study provides a new strategy for the design of efficient catalysts with multiple promotion functions for high performance solid-state hydrogen storage materials.

LaVO4 prepared by a high–yield method for superior catalysis to the hydrogen storage of MgH2

Meihong Wu,Mingxia Gao,Shanqing Qu,Yongfeng Liu,Wenping Sun,Xin Zhang,Chu Liang,Xiaoyu Zhang,Yaxiong Yang,Hongge Pan

MgH 2 is a promising solid–state hydrogen storage material. However, its high thermodynamics and sluggish kinetics hinder its practical application. Catalytic strategy is effective in improving its kinetic performance. Nevertheless, the highly efficient catalysts or additives are normally of low-yield in fabrication with high cost. In this work, a novel structural LaVO 4 fabricated by a low-cost method of spraying dry followed by a calcination is used as a catalytic additive for the hydrogen storage of MgH 2 . With an optimized addition of LaVO 4 , the overall hydrogen storage performances of MgH 2 are significantly improved. An onset dehydrogenation temperature of only 183°C is obtained after an initial activation of dehydrogenation and hydrogenation. The system can desorb 5.7 wt% H 2 at 250°C within 10 min and maintains a dehydrogenation capacity of 5.0 wt% H 2 after 50 cycles. It is found that LaVO 4 is transferred to lanthanum hydride and metallic vanadium in the initial dehydrogenation process, the former acts as a highly effective catalyst for the hydrogen storage of MgH 2 and the latter undergoes reversible hydrogenation and dehydrogenation in the subsequent cycles. The structural design of the catalyst and its scalable fabrication are highly valuable in realizing the practical application of catalytic strategy for the hydrogen storage of MgH 2 .

Enhanced hydrogen storage properties of MgH2 by the synergetic catalysis of Zr0.4Ti0.6Co nanosheets and carbon nanotubes

Liuting Zhang,Ze Sun,Zeliang Cai,Nianhua Yan,Xiong Lu,Xinqiao Zhu,Lixin Chen

Transition metal nanoparticles have shown great catalytic effect on MgH 2 , yet excellent cyclic stability can be attached due to the addition of carbon nanotubes. In this paper, MgH 2  + 10 wt% Zr 0.4 Ti 0.6 Co /5 wt% Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite is designed to investigate the synergistic modification of Zr 0.4 Ti 0.6 Co nanosheets and carbon nanotubes on the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 . Compared with pure MgH 2 , the initial hydrogen release temperature of MgH 2  + 10 wt% Zr 0.4 Ti 0.6 Co /5 wt% CNTs composite decreases to 180 °C and the composite can quickly release 90% H 2 within 10 min at 300 °C. In addition, the completely dehydrogenated sample can absorb 3.51 wt% H 2 within 20 min under 3 Mpa hydrogen pressure at 125 °C. Ulteriorly, the activation energy values of dehydrogenation and rehydrogenation of MgH 2 decrease to 70.5 ± 7.8 kJ/mol and 35.8 ± 3.8 kJ/mol on account of the presence of 10 wt% Zr 0.4 Ti 0.6 Co/5 wt% CNTs , which reasonably explains the remarkable reduction of the temperature for hydrogen sorption. Furthermore, the MgH 2  + 10 wt% Zr 0.4 Ti 0.6 Co /5 wt% CNTs composite shows excellent cycling performance, indicative of potential application in practical hydrogen storage in the nearest future.

Synergistic Catalytic Impact of Composite Oxide Nb2O5@TiO2-C on the Hydrogen Storage Performance of MgH2

Wanyu Li,Muzi Liu,Xiangyu Xin,Yu Xiao,Jinping Li,Guang Liu

MgH 2 is recognized as an exceptionally promising solid-state material for hydrogen storage, but its high thermodynamic stability, slow kinetics, and cycling-induced particle coarsening remain major obstacles to practical application. In this study, a composite oxide catalyst, Nb 2 O 5 @TiO 2 -C, was synthesized via a hydrothermal route by loading nano-Nb 2 O 5 onto a TiO 2 -C support derived from a Ti-based metal- organic framework. Doping with Nb 2 O 5 @TiO 2 -C markedly enhances the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 . Carbon within the support effectively suppresses nanoparticle agglomeration, while the catalyst is partially reduced to low-valence species during de/rehydrogenation cycles, both contributing to the enhanced performance. The MgH 2 -7 wt.% Nb 2 O 5 @TiO 2 -C composite starts dehydrogenating at 210.6 °C. At 300 °C, it rapidly releases over 6 wt% hydrogen within 5 min. The dehydrogenated sample also exhibits fast absorption kinetics, absorbing 6 wt% hydrogen within 1 min at 200 °C under 30 bar H 2 . Moreover, the system shows excellent cycling stability, retaining a hydrogen capacity of 6.6 wt% after 20 cycles.

Cubic NaNbO3 synthesized by alkali treatment of Nb2C MXene for enhancing the hydrogen storage of MgH2

Kunyan Nie,Jianbo Li,Heng Lu,RuiLin Zhang,Yu’an Chen,Fusheng Pan

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is a solid-state hydrogen storage material with promising applications. However, its slow hydrogen release rate at low temperatures (<573 K) and high hydrogen release energy barrier severely limit its practical applications. In this work, a bimetallic oxide (cubic NaNbO 3 ) with side length of 1–10 μm was derived from Nb 2 CT x MXene through a simple hydrothermal reaction, which has a high catalytic activity. The MgH 2 -5 wt% NaNbO 3 composite can rapidly release 6.18 wt% H 2 in 12 min at 260 °C and uptake 3.45 wt% H 2 in 90 min at 30 °C. The activation energy for dehydrogenation (E a ) of MgH 2 -5 wt% NaNbO 3 composite was calculated to be 84.72 kJ/mol, which is much lower than that of milled MgH 2 (150.98 kJ/mol). In addition, hydrogenation and dehydrogenation cycling test results indicated that the composite material presents excellent stable cycling durability, with a capacity retention rate of 99.7 % after 40 cycles, with almost no capacity degradation. The excellent hydrogenation and dehydrogenation ability is mainly contributed by the combined effect of NaMgH 3 , NaNbO 3 , Nb metal and NbH x . The results of this work are instructive for the design of high-properties catalysts to enhance the hydrogen storage capacity of Mg/MgH 2 system.

In situ oxidized MXene-supported Ru nanoparticles: A durable catalyst for high-performance MgH2 hydrogen storage

Bo Zhang,Yongqi Wang,Qiyi Duan,Huinian Zhang,Yueqing Wang,Li Guo,Zhao Zhang

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) has attracted much attention due to its high hydrogen storage capacity and low cost, but it is limited by its slow absorption/desorption kinetics and excessively high operating temperature. In this study, a multiphase synergistic Ru@TiO 2 @MXene catalyst was successfully synthesized by depositing ruthenium onto in-situ oxidized MXene. The resulting catalyst significantly improved the hydrogen absorption/desorption kinetics of MgH 2 . Experimental results demonstrate that with addition of 5 wt% Ru@TiO 2 @MXene, the MgH 2 composite exhibits a significantly reduced onset dehydrogenation temperature of 191 °C and achieves considerable hydrogen absorption at room temperature. The apparent activation energy ( E a) for MgH 2 decreases to 84.92 kJ/mol. In addition, the system maintained a high capacity retention of 97% after 150 cycles. The superior catalytic performance is attributed to the high dispersion of Ru species, the synergistic catalytic activity of multivalent Ti, and high specific surface area MXene. This work provides new insights for designing efficient MgH 2 catalysts.
