Understanding the phenomenon of capacity increasing along cycles: In the case of an ultralong-life and high-rate SnSe-Mo-C anode for lithium storage

Xin Wu,Xingyu Xiong,Bin Yuan,Jun Liu,Renzong Hu

A good cycling stability is a prerequisite for the application of metal-based materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, an abnormal increase in capacity is often observed, which has rarely been focused on in many studies. In our SnSe-Mo-C composite anode, a high reversible capacity of 737.4 mAh g −1 remained after 5000 cycles at 5 A g −1 between 0.01 and 3.0 V versus Li/Li + . However, a continuous capacity increase occurred in the initial cycles, with 1086.9 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles and 1216.9 mAh g −1 after 1500 cycles, respectively. Further studies revealed that the electrolyte decomposed at high potentials (2.5–3.0 V) and provided additional capacities. The cut-off voltage and electrolyte filling were controlled, which eliminated the impact of electrolyte decomposition, prevented rapid capacity decay, and provided a stable cycling performance for SnSe-Mo-C anodes in LIBs. This work shows that the composite anode is promising for lithium storage and the findings provide new insights into understanding and controlling the phenomenon of capacity increase with cycling in metal-based anode materials.

Preparation and characterization of powellite ceramics Ca1-xLix/2Cex/2MoO4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) for Mo-rich HLW condition

Cheng Meng,Wenqi Li,Chunrong Ren,Junchuan Zhao

Powellite ceramic represent one candidate to immobilize minor actinides and Mo from reprocessed UMo nuclear fuel. In this work, the Ca 1-x Li x/2 Ce x/2 MoO 4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) series is prepared via a solid-state reaction using Ce 3+ as trivalent minor actinide (Am 3+ ) surrogate, with structure/microstructure characterized by XRD , XPS, HRTEM , and SEM as well. The Ca 1-x Li x/2 Ce x/2 MoO 4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) compositions crystallize in tetragonal and are isostructural with scheelite. Rietveld refinements show that Ce 3+ and Li + simultaneously enter into the eight-fold coordinated Ca site of powellite crystal. The chemical durability of powellite phases is evaluated by the ASTM C1285-14 product consistency test method B. The leaching behaviours of Ce and Mo are accordance with the interfacial dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism. For all the Ca 1-x Li x/2 Ce x/2 MoO 4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) ceramics, 7-days NL Ce and NL Mo are found to be in the order of 10 −3 -10 −5  g·m −2 and 10 −2 -10 −4  g·m −2 respectively, which exhibit the great retention of Ce and Mo. Interestingly, the values of 7-days NL Ce and NL Mo are predominantly controlled by the distortion of MoO 4 tetrahedra and disordered arrangements of Ce 3+ and Li + . Thus, our initial understanding on the structure and chemical durability relation will provide insight to design new waste forms for the Mo-rich HLW condition.

Suppressing catalyst reconstruction in neutral electrolyte: stabilizing Co-O-Mo point-to-point connection of cobalt molybdate by tungsten doping for oxygen evolution reaction

Zhouzhou Wang,Qiancheng Zhou,Li Luo,Yaran Shi,Haoran Li,Chunchun Wang,Kesheng Lin,Chengsi Wang,Libing Zhu,Linyun Han,Zhuo Xing,Ying Yu

Neutral oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a crucial half-reaction for electrocatalytic chemical production under mild condition, but with limited development due to low activity and poor stability. Herein, a tungsten-doped cobalt molybdate (WDCMO) catalyst was synthesized for efficient and durable OER under neutral electrolyte. It is demonstrated that catalyst reconstruction is suppressed by W doping, which stabilizes the Co-O-Mo point-to-point connection in CoMoO 4 architecture and stimulates to a lower valence state of active sites over the surface phase. Thereby, the surface structure maintains to avoid compound dissolution caused by over-oxidation during OER. Meanwhile, the WDCMO catalyst promotes charge transfer and optimizes *OH intermediate adsorption, which improves reaction kinetics and intrinsic activity. Consequently, the WDCMO electrode exhibits an overpotential of 302 mV at 10 mA cm –2 in neutral electrolyte with an improvement of 182 mV compared with CoMoO 4 electrode. Furthermore, W doping significantly improves the electrode stability from 50 h to more than 320 h, with a suppressive potential attenuation from 2.82 to 0.29 mV h –1 . This work will shed new light on designing rational electrocatalysts for neutral OER.

A bioinspired Fe/Mo bimetallic nitride catalyst for efficient electrochemical ammonia synthesis and Zn-nitrate battery

Jianyue Yan,Peng Liu,Jiawen Li,Hao Huang,Shengfu Tong,Wenbo Song

The electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction to ammonia (NRA) offers a promising alternative to traditional ammonia synthesis methods. In nature, enzymes containing molybdenum and iron sites catalyze the reduction of nitrate and nitrite ions. Drawing inspiration from these enzymes, we synthesized a carbon-coated nano-octahedra of FeMo-based nitride (FeMoN@C NO) by pyrolyzing phosphomolybdic acid hydrate (POM) doped Fe-NH 2 -MIL-101 to catalyze NRA. Experimental results demonstrate that in an alkaline environment, FeMoN@C NO exhibits a suitable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) capacity, and the protons or hydroxyls produced effectively facilitate the hydrogenation reaction in the ammonia synthesis process. Additionally, the introduction of Mo increases the number of active sites and effectively reduces the thermodynamic barrier in NRA, thereby enhancing the rate of ammonia synthesis. As a result, FeMoN@C NO displays outstanding NH 3 Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 98.2 % and an NH 3 yield of 434.16 µmol/h cm −2 . Building upon the excellent electrocatalytic properties of FeMoN@C NO, a new Zn-nitrate battery system is assembled in this work, which exhibits an outstanding peak power density of 3.23 mW cm −2 and an FE of 91.58 % for NH 3 production. This work provides a new perspective for designing enzyme-mimicking nitrate reduction catalysts and broadens the application of Zn-based batteries.

Weak interaction induced selective separation of V/Mo/Co from spent hydrodesulfurization catalyst leaching solution: Mechanism and strategy

Hongtao Liu,Zekai Qin,Xueli Wang,Maolin Tian,Wenjie Zhang,Lin Li,Jiawei Wen,Guoyong Huang,Shengming Xu

Spent hydrodesulfurization catalysts contain more than 10 ∼ 25 wt% V, Mo and Co, which are not only hazardous materials, but also can be considered as valuable secondary resources. The complete separation of these complex critical metals by solvent extraction still needs to be improved. Here, a selective extraction route for the separation of V/Mo/Co is proposed based on the weak interaction differences between extractants and metal, which is realized by theoretical calculation and experimental verification. This process does not require pretreatment of N1923 and Cyanex272 (C272), thus reduced the consume of acid and base as well as generation of waste water. With the preliminary results of V/Mo, Co/Mo, and V/Co separation, the weak interaction between extractants and metal molecules was revealed by quantum chemical calculations quantitatively. The molecular charge distribution, surface electrostatic potential distribution (ESP) and the average local ionization energy (ALIE) shows the priority reactivity of the metal molecules as: H 6 V 10 O 28  > H 2 Mo 4 O 13  > H 4 V 4 O 12  > H 3 VO 4  > H 2 MoO 4 . The independent gradient model based on Hirshfeld partition (IGMH) show differences in the weak interaction forces as: N1923-V>C272-Mo > C272-V>N1923-Mo > C272-Co. The selective separation process of V/Mo/Co was designed with the guide of above results. The combined recovery of the three metals V, Mo and Co amounted to 83.88 %, 87.08 %, and 99.01 %, respectively. The whole route reduces 3.92 t sulfuric acid and 7.83 t sodium hydroxide per solid, and reduces 1.99 t carbon emissions compared to the conventional route.

Engineered Fe-Mo nanomaterial for dual suppression of pollutant accumulation in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and root-zone remediation: Mechanisms and implications for safer crop production

Yina Guan,Xiaojia Li,Tian Gao,Kai Zheng,Yukun Wang,Zelian Yu,Chunguang Liu

Engineered nanomaterials (NMs) have emerged as promising tools for improving agricultural sustainability. However, their dual capacity to restrict pollutant bioaccumulation while enhancing environmental remediation remains a challenge. In this study, we developed a novel Fe-Mo nanocomplex (Fe@Mo-5) that concurrently addresses both critical challenges in agro-environmental systems. Comprehensive characterization indicated that Fe@Mo-5 exhibited strong stability, high redox activity and excellent nanozyme-mimetic properties, formed protective film on the surface of lettuce ( Lactuca sativa L. ) roots. This barrier effectively reduced the uptake of multiple pollutants, including atrazine (ATZ), ibuprofen and bisphenol A. Notably, the accumulation of ATZ was decreased 60.7 % in roots and 65.7 % in edible leaves, while decreasing its translocation factor from 0.177 to 0.111, significantly lowering dietary exposure risks. Parallelly, Fe@Mo-5 actively participated in ATZ degradation by increasing removal efficiency by 42.5 %, with a safe concentration and sustained ROS generation that balanced efficient ATZ removal with minimal phytotoxicity. Additionally, the application of Fe@Mo-5 significantly improved lettuce growth parameters, including promoting biomass accumulation, photosynthesis and nitrogen metabolism without inducing oxidative damage. This work establishes a breakthrough nano-enabled strategy that synergistically combines crop protection with environmental remediation, offering a viable solution for sustainable agriculture and food safety in contaminated environments.

A Study of Molybdenum Coatings Underpotential Preparation in an Ionic Liquid System

Huazhen Cao,Zhizhou Yue,Huibin Zhang,Guangya Hou,Yiping Tang,Guoqu Zheng

Electrodeposition of refractory metals is a challenging issue in the electroplating field owing to their low reduction potential. Electrodeposition of molybdenum in MoCl 5 -BMIMPF 6 by a cyclic scanning regime was introduced in this paper. Ni-Mo and Pt/Ni-Mo deposits were prepared by underpotential deposition to induce the bulk deposition of molybdenum. The coatings were observed and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical behavior of metallic molybdenum in ionic liquids was studied by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The results show that the initial nucleation/growth process of molybdenum in MoCl 5 -BMIMPF 6 follows three-dimensional progressive nucleation with diffusion-controlled growth, and the nucleation rate of molybdenum is slow in the ionic liquid system. The effects of supporting electrolytes and sputtering Pt/Ni electrodes were particularly studied. A yellow-brown uniform coating with more refined crystalline grains was obtained on the Ni surface by the addition of NaF due to its positive role in the mass transfer process and good complexing actions that promote nucleation. A gray-white coating with metallic luster was successfully fabricated on the surface of sputtered Pt/Ni because the substrate with a high work function is benign to molybdenum growth at a lower temperature and more positive potentials.

The construction of strongly coupled interface for highly efficient oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions

ShiWen Luo,ChengWei Deng,Kan Zhang,Sheng Zhu,QunJie Xu,YuLin Min

Reasonable interface regulation is a promising way to obtain bifunctional or multi-functional catalysts as the heterogeneous interface generally offers unique electronic structures. Here, we design a strongly coupled interface structure in Ni 3 Mo 3 N/Mo 2 C coated with graphitized carbon (Ni 3 Mo 3 N/Mo 2 C@C) by using an in-situ growth strategy. The density functional theory calculation unveil that the heterointerface of Ni 3 Mo 3 N/Mo 2 C@C not only facilitates the charge transfer, but also regulates the adsorption free-energies of the reaction intermediates (*O, *OH, and *OOH), to achieve superior electrocatalytic performances for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). As bifunctional catalysts, the Ni 3 Mo 3 N/Mo 2 C@C exhibits high HER and OER activities, with 43 mV and 220 mV overpotentials at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH electrolyte, respectively, as well as outstanding catalytic durability. This interface coupling strategy may provide a useful path to promote the electrocatalytic activities for diverse reactions in the energy field.

Modulation of oxygen vacancies in NiFe layered double hydroxides through dual-doping with Mo/Cr cations for efficient seawater hydrogen production

Yan Zheng,Jinshu Lu,Xuan Wang,Tianbo Jia,Jinyi Cai,Dingkai Zhou,Yuexin Qian,Yamin Fu,Chunyang Zhai,Hengcong Tao,Yingtang Zhou,Shunli Li

Seawater splitting to produce hydrogen holds promise for renewable energy but faces challenges from chloride ions, causing electrode corrosion and competition between chlorine oxidation reaction (ClOR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Therefore, it is crucial to develop highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts for seawater splitting. Here, we employ a dual-doping strategy of Mo/Cr cations and a sulfuration approach to fabricate the S-MoCr-NiFe@NF bifunctional catalyst with a 3D nano-flower structure. The S-MoCr-NiFe@NF catalyst exhibits remarkable catalytic performance for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1.0 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl and 1.0 M KOH + Seawater, achieving current densities of 10 mA cm −2 at low overpotentials of 116 and 141 mV, respectively. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the S-MoCr-NiFe@NF catalyst exhibited remarkable performance in alkaline overall seawater splitting, requiring only 1.48 and 1.57 V to achieve current densities of 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl and 1.0 M KOH + Seawater, respectively. The in-situ Raman and DFT calculations confirm Ni as the primary active sites, reducing the energy barrier of the rate-determining step and enhancing OER performance. This study will offer a viable approach to developing and creating highly effective bifunctional catalysts for seawater splitting.

High energy release boron-based material with oxygen vacancies promoting combustion

Hui-xin Wang,Hui Ren,Liu Yin,Ya-ru Li,Xin-zhou Wu

Boron has a high calorific value and good application prospects in energetic materials. However, further applications of boron are hindered by its incomplete combustion. MoO 3 has good catalytic properties, and its layered structure can provide good ion flow channels and embedding positions. In this study, mechanical mixtures of B/MoO 3 and B/Mo were prepared. The promotion of B combustion by MoO 3 and Mo was confirmed via combustion heat and burning rate tests. The mechanism by which Mo/MoO 3 promote B combustion was studied by thermal analysis, high-temperature in situ X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy . The maximum heat release and burning rate of B/MoO 3 and B/Mo were 2.49 and 2.62 and 2.67 and 2.55 times, respectively, those of raw boron. A pre-ignition reaction occurred when boron first came into contact with the surface of MoO 3 . The oxygen vacancies on the MoO 3 surface served as reaction sites for boron. MoO 3 promoted the combustion of B by opening up oxygen channels and improving the oxygen transport capability. Mo also effectively promoted boron combustion. B/Mo and B/MoO 3 have promising future applications as high energy release materials.

Preparation of ultrafine (W,Mo)B, (W,Mo)B2.5 and (Mo,W)AlB solid solution composite powders

Xiao-Hui Yang,Guo-Hua Zhang

In this study, ultrafine borides powders including (W,Mo)B, (W,Mo)B 2.5 and (Mo,W)AlB were successfully fabricated via boronizing ultrafine W-Mo solid solution composite powder with B 4 C as the boron source under the assistance of Ca melt or Al melt. Ultrafine W-Mo solid solution powder was obtained by using a two-stage reduction route to reduce the precursor powder synthesized by spray drying. Meanwhile, the effects of Mo/W ratio on the phase composition, morphological characteristics and particle size distribution of boride solid solution composite powder were thoroughly investigated. The shift of diffraction peak in the XRD spectrum, the linear change of lattice constant and the homogeneous distributions of W, Mo, B and Al in the EDS energy spectrum comprehensively confirmed that the boride solid solution with different Mo/W ratios could be prepared. Due to the essentially insolubilities of W and Mo in Ca melt, the (W, Mo)B grains grew following a template growth mechanism, and inherited the nearly spherical morphology feature of ultrafine W-Mo solid solution composite powder with a particle size of approximately 200 nm. Nonetheless, as a result of the high solubilities of W, Mo, and B in Al melt, the process of dissolution-precipitation led to the formations of flaky (W, Mo)B 2.5 and short rod-shaped (Mo, W)AlB.

Microstructure and shear fracture behavior of Mo/AlN/Mo symmetrical compositionally graded materials

Mingyong Jia,Fei Chen,Yueqi Wu,Like Xu,Qiang Shen,Nan Jiang,Jian Sun

The metallization of AlN ceramic is a critical prerequisite for applying AlN ceramics to electronic component packaging. In this study, a concept of functionally graded materials (FGMs) was used for the metallization of AlN ceramic. Symmetrical Mo/AlN/Mo FGMs with different composition exponent p ( p =1, p <1, and p >1) were designed and fabricated by hot-press sintering. The influence of the p -value on the shear performance and fracture path of the Mo/AlN/Mo FGMs was investigated. Compared to specimens with p =1, the specimens with p <1 and p >1 show the distribution of Mo-rich and AlN-rich in the graded transition layer, respectively. The shear strength of the specimens reaches a maximum value of 48.0 MPa as p  < 1 and 22.5 MPa higher than the minimum value as p  > 1. Besides, three fracture paths were found for the Mo/AlN/Mo FGMs with different values of p , including the cracks propagate obliquely along the axis in the graded transition layer, the cracks penetrate through the AlN ceramic and the graded transition layer, and the cracks only propagate horizontally in a single graded layer. The crack initiation of Mo/AlN/Mo FGMs depends on the strength of each graded layer. Moreover, the directions of fracture paths are closely related to the strength of the ceramic interlayer and the composition exponent p .
