The assembly of diverse active materials significantly enhances the efficiency of the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we prepare a three-phase composite structure electrocatalyst on carbonized wood, in which molybdenum carbide and molybdenum phosphide are attached to molybdenum sulfide nanosheets (MoS2–MoP–Mo2C@CW) through the hydrothermal method in combination with high-temperature calcination for a pH-universal HER. MoS2 possesses abundant unsaturated coordination edge active sites, thus facilitating the adsorption and desorption of the hydrogen intermediate (H*). The synergistic effect between MoS2, MoP featuring favorable electronic conductivity, and Mo2C holding strong adsorption of H* enhances the catalytic activity for the pH-universal HER. Moreover, the carbonized wood with a hierarchical porous structure and aligned microchannels accelerates mass transport during the HER. As a result, the molybdenum-based self-supported composite electrode exhibits outstanding HER performance with the low overpotentials of 46, 84, and 65 mV to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm–2 and the corresponding Tafel slopes of 57, 111 mV, and 63 mV dec–1 in alkaline, neutral, and acidic environments, respectively. MoS2–MoP–Mo2C@CW also shows a long-term durability of 200 h over a broad pH range at 10 mA cm–2. This work provides an effective strategy for the development of multiphase carbonized wood-based electrocatalysts for the pH-universal HER.

A free-standing and flexible sulfur host material composed of Mo 2 C nanoarrays growing on the surface of carbon cloth (Mo 2 C/CC) is designed for the binder-free cathode of the Lithium-sulfur (Li–S) batteries. The carbon cloth substrate is flexible together with the conductive bottlebrush-like Mo 2 C, this host material can provide more active sites and a large inner space to accommodate the volume expansion of sulfur to Li 2 S 2 /Li 2 S. The electric conductive Mo 2 C nanoarrays can not only adsorb the polysulfides through forming Mo–S bonds to inhibit the shuttle of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), but also can boost the electron transfer and promote the direct conversion of the LiPSs to Li 2 S 2 /Li 2 S on their surface. As a result, the sulfur cathodes based on the Mo 2 C/CC host material exhibit an impressive specific capacity of 1213 mA h g -1 at 0.1 C, maintain a long-term cyclability with a decay of 0.011% per cycle. More remarkably, excellent capacity of 8.57 mA h cm -2 can be attained with a high sulfur loading (10.8 mg cm −2 ) benefit from the 3D nanoarrays structure of the Mo 2 C/CC host material. Meanwhile, a pouch cell based on Mo 2 C/CC@S cathode can cycle steadily.

Two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum carbide and nitride are promising pseudocapacitive materials, but their single-phase forms suffer from sluggish ion reaction kinetics and low active sites, leading to unsatisfactory capacitive performance. Herein, a scalable molten-salt–assisted strategy is developed to construct 2D in-plane heterostructured Mo 2 C/MoN nanosheets with tunable interfaces, which involves carbonization of bulk MoO 3 into Mo 2 C nanosheets in molten salt, followed by partial topochemical nitridation to convert Mo 2 C into MoN. Electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance and in situ Raman spectroscopy reveal that the pseudocapacitance arises primarily from reversible H + interactions with Mo–C sites in Mo 2 C, with additional contribution from Mo–N sites. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations confirm that the interfacial electron transfer from Mo 2 C to MoN upshifts the d -band center of Mo 2 C and reduces its H + adsorption energy from −0.522 to −1.526 eV; meanwhile, electron injection into MoN weakens the Mo–N coordination and creates undercoordinated Mo sites. These two effects synergistically promote the pseudocapacitive redox activity. The optimized Mo 2 C/MoN achieves a large capacitance of 323.6 F g −1 (899.6 F cm −3 ) at 1 A g −1 , high rate capability (204.7 F g −1 at 10 A g −1 ), and 91.1% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles in 1 M H 2 SO 4 . This paper reports a scale preparation of non-layered 2D Mo 2 C/MoN heterostructured nanosheets and demonstrates that interfacial charge redistribution boosts pseudocapacitive storage.

Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene was assembled by hydrothermal and impregnation reduction process. • The introduction of Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene accelerates the hydrolysis rate of ammonia borane. • Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene exhibits a high TOF value of 1092 mol H2 ∙mol Ru −1 ∙min −1 . • Dual active sites of Ru and N-Mo 2 C MXene promotes the hydrogen production for NH 3 BH 3 . Ammonia borane (NH 3 BH 3 , AB) is an ideal hydrogen storage medium, but its intrinsic physicochemical properties require efficient catalysts for rapid hydrolytic dehydrogenation at room temperature. Herein, the Ru nanoparticles anchored nitrogen-doped Mo 2 C MXene (Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene) catalyst was successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal method combined with an impregnation-reduction strategy, using urea as the nitrogen source. When the mass ratio of Mo 2 C MXene to urea was 1:6, the Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene catalyst exhibited optimal performance. At 298 K, the turnover frequency value of Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene was 1092 mol H2 ∙mol Ru −1 ∙min −1 , with an activation energy of 51.74 kJ∙mol −1 , and the catalytic activity remained 86.2% after five cycles. Mechanism analysis indicates that the superior hydrogen production performance of AB is attributed to both the generation of 1.59 nm Ru nanoparticles and the modulated local electronic structure induced by N doping originating from Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene. These features facilitate the generation of dual active sites (electron-rich Ru and electron-deficient N-Mo 2 C MXene), which efficiently promote the cleavage of B H in AB and O H in H 2 O, thereby significantly boosting the catalytic activity of Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene for AB hydrogen production. This work establishes a feasible strategy for designing high-efficiency catalysts for ammonia borane hydrolysis.

The development of high-performance non-precious metal-based heterostructures is of great significance for advancing large-scale commercial water electrolysis. Herein, we demonstrate a temperature-induced phase transition strategy of tuning MoC to Mo 2 C to synthesize MoC/Mo 2 C heterojunctions supported on nitrogen-doped carbon spheres, denoted as MoC/Mo 2 C@NC, for efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution (HER). The intrinsic HER mechanism of the catalyst was analyzed by both comprehensive characterization and density functional theoretical calculations. It is found that the construction of the MoC/Mo 2 C heterojunction stabilizes the originally unstable MoC (200) plane, converting it to a metastable state, thereby greatly lowering the reaction energy barrier of the catalyst. The nitrogen-doped carbon substrate not only enhances the dispersion and structural stability but also promotes electron transfer. Moreover, the flower-like architecture provides abundant active sites and facilitates hydrogen desorption kinetics. Benefiting from these synergistic effects, the optimized MoC/Mo 2 C@NC catalyst delivers excellent electrocatalytic performance, achieving a low overpotential (η 10 = 101 mV), which surpasses most reported non-precious metal-based catalysts in alkaline environment.

Practical structural design and electronic regulation are significant for synthesising efficient electrocatalysts. Therefore, a facile soft-template approach has been applied to successfully grow Ni/Mo 2 C heterojunction nanosheet arrays on nickel foam (NF) skeleton (NS-Ni/Mo 2 C@NF) using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a soft template. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that abundant Ni/Mo 2 C heterojunction in NS-Ni/Mo 2 C@NF can provide many active sites with a moderate hydrogen adsorption free energy (ΔG H* , 0.037 eV). Benefiting from this nanosheet array structure and abundant Ni/Mo 2 C heterojunctions, the NS-Ni/Mo 2 C@NF catalyst can efficiently catalyze HER, especially at large current densities. As a result, only 151 and 271 mV overpotentials are needed to deliver 100 and 1000 mA/cm 2 HER, respectively. More importantly, the hydrogen production testing with NS-Ni/Mo 2 C@NF as the working electrode can run stably for 500 h without activity decay under the current density of 500 mA/cm 2 commonly used in industrial water electrolyzers, indicating that NS-Ni/Mo 2 C@NF has broad application prospects.

Molybdenum carbide possessing a Pt-like d-band electronic structure is considered as one of potential candidates of electrocatalysts and it shows intrinsic catalytic property. However, a high carbonizing temperature easily leads to the coalescence of nanoparticles (NPs). Here, we propose a simple sol-gel route to achieve high dispersity of carbide NPs by designing a Mo-involved xerogel. The results show that molybdenum carbide NPs are dispersed and anchored on the nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (Mo 2 C@NC). Ultrathin carbon layers resemble graphene and the network structures act as a support of carbide NPs, which can hinder NPs’ coalescence effectively. Nanpoparticles cross-coupled on network-structure nanosheets display the grid shapes. Electrochemical studies indicate that Mo 2 C@NC material exhibits outstanding hydrogen evolution performance in alkaline electrolyte.

How to design the components of the cathode carrier is very important for the adsorption and catalysis of polysulfide conversion. Herein, Ni-Mo 2 C codoped hollow carbon nanospheres were prepared by two-step solvent synthesis and subsequent heat treatment. Ni as a supplementary material, it can effectively solve the problems of few electrochemical active sites and poor catalytic effect of lithium polysulfide (LPS) of Mo 2 C carbon nanospheres, and the optimal ratio of Ni to Mo 2 C was explored. Through the comparison of electrochemical tests, the Ni-Mo 2 C carbon nanospheres of optimal proportion shows high discharge specific capacity (0.2 C, 1101.3 mAh· g − 1 ) and excellent rate performance (2 C, 692.9 mAh· g − 1 ), which shows the best catalytic and adsorption effect on LPS. In addition, the optimal proportion of Ni-Mo 2 C carbon nanospheres has the highest lithium ion diffusion coefficient, which can accelerate the transport of Li + and the kinetics of electrochemical reaction.

Because of low-cost, marvelous activity and excellent stability characteristics, nonprecious metal carbide-based catalysts are promising candidates for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, inferior specific surface area and undesirable catalytic activity of pure phase carbides greatly impedes their industrialization process. Herein, ultrafine Mo 2 C nanoparticles embedded in N-doped carbon nanosheet has been synthesized by a facile strategy. High viscosity of guar gum alleviates the aggregation of nanocrystals by providing space-confinement effect; besides, NaCl plays two roles: (1) hard template directing the formation of carbon nanosheet; (2) molten salt adjusting the nucleation and growth process of Mo 2 C to ensure the formation of ultra-small Mo 2 C nanoparticles. Two-dimensional sheet-like carbon accelerates the electron transfer , and rich heterojunction between ultrafine Mo 2 C and N-doped carbon facilitates boosting the HER catalytic activity. The prepared Mo 2 C/NCS with optimized composition exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity and stability both in acidic (189 mV at a current density of 10 mV/cm 2 with a Tafel slope of 61.2 mV/dec) and alkaline medium (142 mV at a current density of 10 mV/cm 2 with a Tafel slope of 56.1 mV/dec). This work may provide insight for developing economic and high-efficient catalysts for water splitting.

Lithium sulfur (Li-S) batteries hold promise as next-generation high energy density devices due to their high theoretical capacities. However, their commercialization confronts great challenges, in particular the notorious shuttle effect and sluggish kinetics, making it difficult to realize high sulfur loading and cell energy density properties. Herein, we explore the potential of molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C) as the cathode catalyst to promote the polysulfide conversion. Nanosized Mo 2 C embedded porous carbon network (Mo 2 C@PCN) are prepared through the pyrolysis of molybdenum and chitosan precursor. Both electrochemical performance and theoretical calculations reveal that introducing the Mo 2 C can not only enhance the affinity toward the polysulfide intermediate, but also significantly accelerate the polysulfide interconversion compared with that of the pristine porous carbon network (PCN), thereby endowing the Li-S batteries with excellent cycling stability with a low capacity decay of 0.034 % per cycle over 600 cycles, and superb rate capability of 644 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 .

Developing low-cost, highly active, and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts is a challenging issue in electrochemical water electrolysis . Herein, we develop a simple metal organic frameworks (MOFs) based approach to prepare bifunctional Co-NC@ Mo 2 C complex catalysts. Differently from traditional carbon encapsulated functional nanomaterials , herein the carbon-based framework derived carbonitride and Co nanoparticles (Co-NC) are encapsulated with Mo 2 C. Benefiting from the unique reverse-encapsulation structure and synergetic effects of Mo 2 C and Co-NC, the Co-NC@Mo 2 C catalyst shows superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. In alkaline media , it affords the current density of 10 mA cm −2 at low overpotentials of 99 mV and 347 mV for HER and OER, respectively. Interestingly, due to a reversed encapsulation structure where Co nanoparticles are protected by Mo 2 C, it leads to an outstanding HER catalytic activity (a low overpotential of 143 mV) and stability in acidic solutions. Remarkably, when employed as both the cathode and anode for overall water splitting, a low cell voltage of 1.685 V is required to reach the current density of 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline media with excellent stability, making the Co-NC@Mo 2 C an efficient non noble metal bifunctional electrocatalyst toward water splitting.

Non-precious metal-based efficient electrocatalysts with superior activity and stability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are useful in solving energy and environmental crises. Herein, monodisperse inverse opal-like Mo x C (α-MoC 1-x /β-Mo 2 C) nanospheres were synthesized via a facile strategy to adjust the intrinsic activity and maximize the exposed active sites. In particular, the Mo x C-0.4 with the optimal composition of α-MoC 1-x /β-Mo 2 C (0.56/0.44) demonstrated a superior HER performance in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 with a small Tafel slope of 48 mV dec −1 and remarkable stability. Such prominent performance not only benefits from the inverse opal-like structure that provides more active sites for HER, but also should be ascribed to the strong synergistic effect between α-MoC 1-x and β-Mo 2 C. Based on theoretical calculations, it is further verified that the synergistic effect of Mo x C-0.4 is originated from the optimization of interaction with the H* induced by the heterostructure. Furthermore, this work will broaden our vision for highly efficient hydrogen production by bridging the microscopic structure with macroscopic catalytic performance.
